What a month of renewal, growth and change. This is the month many across the community are graduating from high school – like my niece Bailey Bell – or col-lege, and many are getting mar-ried. Two beautiful brides and their stunning weddings are featured be-ginning on page 15. I’ve been mar-ried for 13 years and remember the day like it was yesterday. Best of luck to these newlyweds, and may you have continued love and life!

On our cover this month is Kevin Black – Katy resident, band leader and brother to country music icon Clint Black. After the death of his daughter Cortney to Rett Syndrome, Black is offering his anthology, Raising a Hand, a book of photos taken by Black and Dave Clements of celebrity musicians “raising a hand” for Retts.

Finally, Father’s Day is Sunday, June 19th. Take the time to call and say thank you. On that note, I’d like to say Happy Father’s Day to my dad, Bryan, and broth-er, Pete, both Katy residents, as well as my husband, Brent. Happy Father’s Day to all dads!

Absolutely! yours,

“When Cortney was born in 1987, she appeared to be the picture of health,” Black said of his daughter. “She progressed normally until some-time between her first and second birthdays when we noticed her prog-ress seemed to be going backward.”

Black and Cortney’s mother, Patri-cia, took their baby to their family doc-tor, who told them he thought Cortney was just “being lazy,” Black remem-bered. “That didn’t sound right to us. She was losing her vocabulary and was having trouble walking and using her hands.”

Eventually, the Blacks were given a solid diagnosis with a devastating prognosis: Cortney was suffering from Rett Syndrome and would probably not survive her childhood.

Living withRett Syndrome

The ensuing years became more and more difficult as the Blacks watched their daughter gradually fade away, eventually becoming bedridden and unable to speak. Along the way, the couple added two sons to their family:

K evin Black and his family have survived the worst tragedy which can befall a family – the death of a child. Now Black, 56, seeks to put meaning and

assistance into the terrible equation which defines the death of a child.

Marshall, now 28, and Coleton, now 24, both of whom remained in the Katy area after graduating from Katy ISD’s Taylor High School.

“She did get to go to school for a while,” said Black, a longtime Katy res-ident, band leader and brother to coun-try music icon Clint Black. “Cortney went to kindergarten and first grade at Zelma Hutsell Elementary School be-fore transferring to Nottingham Coun-try Elementary School, where she went until the fifth grade.

“It’s so hard for the doctors to say what will happen,” Black added. “Some Rett Syndrome patients live for just two years, others for about 16 years; a few actually make it to 50.”

cerebral palsy or a non-specific devel-opmental delay. Doctors confirm Retts with a blood test, as well as assessment of the signs and symptoms. The disease causes learning problems, as well as problems in sensory sensations, mood, movement, breathing, cardiac function and even chewing, swallowing and di-gestion, doctors say.

“The disease is particularly bad be-cause you can see it robbing your child of any progress she made in the first few months or years of living. It’s hard to watch,” Black said. “All of the social skills and motor skills they have ob-tained slowly cease to progress, start-ing a process of regression to what is the equivalent of living the rest of their life as an infant. Kids with Retts lose their hands, the ability to speak and most are bound to a wheelchair. Par-ents and siblings become 24-hour care-givers, changing their lives forever as well,” Black said.

“We started raising money for the International Rett Syndrome Founda-tion,” Black said. “We’d have golf tour-naments, fishing tournaments, Stroll-a-thons – anything we could think of to raise money to find a cure.”

Dave Clements, also a Retts fa-ther, entered the picture when he photographed Kevin raising his hand for emphasis while singing God Bless the U.S.A. in concert. Clements ap-

proached Black for an autograph, and an instant friendship was formed.

Raising a HandFrom there, Black took up photog-

raphy himself, relying on Clements for tips, as the pair sought to photograph music stars with their hand raised. The photographs became the collection seen in their collaborative book, Raising A Hand. Proceeds from the book are ear-marked for the Rett Syndrome Founda-tion through Raising a Hand for Rett.

This photo of Kevin Black performing sparked the idea for the book Raising A Hand.

Watching Cortney’s struggle took its toll on the family. “We sought counsel-ing,” shared Black, who also traveled with his band, playing acoustic guitar and singing. “I thought I was strong enough to take care of everything. Un-fortunately, that turned out not to be true.”

Black, who was born and reared in west Houston until his freshman year in high school when he began attend-ing Katy High School after his family moved to Katy, said Cortney’s death in 2003 forced him to take a harder look at Rett Syndrome and the work being done to find a cure.

“It can be detected in pregnancy,” Black said. “Scientists have identified the gene mutation which results in Retts. You mostly see girls with it, be-cause boys with it don’t usually survive long after birth.”

According to doctors, Rett Syndrome is most often misdiagnosed as autism,

Page 14: June 2016 - Absolutely Katy Magazine

“The idea for the book came from knowing music art-ists use their hands actively when they perform,” Black said. “It’s amazing how many celebrities wanted to join us in putting this book together. Taking the pictures was fun: some artists gave us quotes, and some did whole interviews. Kris Kristofferson wrote a song and gave us permission to put the lyrics in the book.

“Taking the pictures was easy,” Black said. “The hard part was tracking down the artist to get their per-mission to use the photos in the book.”

With more than 200 celebrities in the book, Raising A Hand is available online and sells for $35, $25 of which goes to the Rett Syndrome Foundation for research. Ad-ditionally, supporters may buy T-shirts and ball caps on the website or just make a simple donation.

“They’ve already found a way to reverse Retts in the lab,” Black added. “Clinical trials on that medication are starting now.”

Black said he has always had a theory why he had a child with Retts. “At first, it was hard,” he admitted. “I was never a non-believer, but at first I thought maybe God was punishing Cortney for my sins. But now, I

body changes attribu-tive to Rett Syndrome. They also gradually lose their vocabulary and have no meaningful use of their hands.

Patients exhibit sco-liosis – curvature of the spin – after growth spurts,

when the vertebrae not only bend sideways but also rotate and begin to stiffen in place as the curve gets larger, doctors say, and may lead to some loss of respiratory and gastric function.

To combat the disease, Katy resident Kevin Black is offering his anthology Raising A Hand, a book of photos taken by Black and Dave Clements of celebrity musicians “raising a hand” for Retts.

“It’s amazing how many celebrities are willing to help,” Black said. “The book includes George Strait, Dolly Parton, Paul Mc-Cartney, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and, of course, Clint Black.”

The book is available for $35 from the website raisingahand.com or from members of the Kevin Black Band. Proceeds ben-efit the International Rett Syndrome Foundation for research in finding a cure.

think God gave us Cortney because Clint was going to be famous and have a big platform from where he could raise awareness of this disease.”

“If Retts hasn’t touched you personally, you don’t know about it,” Clint Black said. “They’ve identified the gene that carries it. There’s always hope.”

According to Black, so far the book has raised $140,000 in Internet sales and “sales from the back of my car.”

“The book has already had sales in 42 states and seven countries,” Black said. “None of the celebrities received com-pensation of any kind for being included in the book. Even the writers and all of the others who worked for the book worked for free.

“I feel it’s important for people to know about Retts,” Black said. “People should know we’ve devoted 13 years to trying to help Rett families and their children. Our immedi-ate goal is to sell 1,000 books in each of the 50 states. Our long-term goal is to completely eradicate this disease.”

A ccording to Katy band leader and musician Kev-in Black, bereaved father

of a Rett Syndrome patient, one in 10,000 children – mostly girls – are born with Rett Syndrome.

“Andrea Rett is credited with dis-covering the syndrome in 1976,” Black said. “The characteristics

and severity of the disease varies widely from patient to

patient. There are intesti-nal issues, scoliosis and

sometimes, the patient can’t eat, like my Cort-ney, and have to have a feeding tube put in.”

Meet Rachel Walgenbach

By Joan FrancesPhotos by Lisa Jane.

HOT SHOTHigh School

“Ever since I was a kid, I have loved bringing a smile to people’s faces, and I have gained a reputation for always being optimistic.” – Rachel Walgenbach

K aty High School has the repu-tation for getting things done. Success in academics and extra-

curricular activities makes this school a recognized leader in Katy Independent School District, where students gradu-ate with a detailed resume of great ac-complishments. One senior who is ready to take the next step in her future is Ra-chel Walgenbach.

Rachel is an outstanding student who has taken Advanced Placement classes and is a member of the National Honor Society and the French Club. She enjoys donating her time as a participant of the Interact Club. Rachel has also sung in the choir all four years and is in varsity choir this year.

As vice president of Theatre Troupe 5168, Rachel en-joys learning about every aspect of theater including cos-tumes, set and makeup, and she has held positions as head of props, assistant stage manager and assistant di-rector. Additionally, Rachel performed in Dessert Theatre and was in the cast of Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat and Shrek the Musical. Rachel and her cast also ad-vanced to the University Interscholastic League Region-als in the One Act Play Radium Girls.

When asked why being a leader is fulfilling to her, Rachel replied, “Participating in theater has been one of the most enjoyable things that I have done with my high school career. Knowing how to properly lead is a vital skill that I have picked up along my journey, and holding my fellow students’ respect and appreciation is something I take pride in. I have a passion for helping others improve themselves and guiding them to success, which my posi-tions have allowed me to do. I can’t even explain the joy of watching a show as it slowly comes together for the first performance. It is that day that hundreds of hours of work are finally revealed, and I take much pride in getting to show the public how talented Katy Theatre can be.”

One value Rachel lives by is kindness toward others. “Ever since I was a kid, I have loved bringing a smile to people’s faces, and I have gained a reputation for always being optimistic,” Rachel said. “I especially take initiative when I meet new students, because I know it’s difficult at

first after switching schools. I came here in fifth grade from New Orleans, Louisi-ana, so I know it’s difficult feeling out of place. I always try my best to help ease people into Katy and keep people feeling positive.”

One thing Rachel will treasure most about her high school experience is be-ing a member of Peer Assisted Learn-ing Strategies (PALS). “My peers and I are responsible for mentoring young, impressionable children in elementary or junior high school, and we take pride in being able to aid them in their search of figuring out who they are. Mentoring is more than just coaching; it’s helping

them handle disappointment, deal with frustration, be-have with humility, have compassion toward others and so much more. It takes a serious emotional commitment, similar to parenting, to help these children become suc-cessful. It feels great to be part of a team of high school students who care so much about these young lives. Their dedication and affection inspires me every day to pursue a career in pediatric physical therapy.”

Rachel will attend Texas State University in the fall and will major in physical therapy with an emphasis on pediatric work. Congratulations on your generous contri-butions to your school and community Rachel, and good luck as you continue to be an asset to society.

Houston Methodist West HospitalBreaks Ground on Expansion

After opening its doors just five years ago, Houston Methodist West Hospital is expanding its campus to better serve its community. “Summertime is always the best of what might be.” – Charles Bowden

Many readers enjoyed this ar-ticle from a few years ago, and I thought it was worth reprinting.

Summer should be a wonderful time for a child – a time when memories are made that last a life-time. Play your part to insure this happens!

DO:

1 Ask what your child would like to do for the summer. Consider summer camps, Vacation

Bible School and social plans they might want to participate in – particularly for an older child.

2 Set a specific schedule, put it on the calendar and let your child know exactly when the child

will be with each parent. Stick to the schedule to avoid confusion for your child or the other parent.

3 Confer with and get the other parent’s ap-proval, in writing, if you want to switch periods

of possession.

4 Reassure your child that you are okay with both parents being involved in the child’s life.

5 Accept that the child loves both of their par-ents – and even stepparents!

DON’T:

1 Be a “no show” for your child. This is akin to being stood up by a parent. The pain is great,

and the feeling of abandonment is profound for the child.

2 Plan an activity for your child during the other parent’s periods of possession for a non-

emergency event, thereby sabotaging summer plans the other parent has with the child. A child can be conflicted and feel that he has to choose.

3 Interrogate your child after a visit with the other parent. It’s acceptable to ask general

questions about their visit with the other parent, but don’t snoop.

4 Make your child feel bad about enjoying his visit with the other parent.

5 Have a “significant other” with you or pawn your child off to a “significant other” or “sitter”

during your periods of possession. Have a lot of one-on-one time with your child, thereby affirming how important your child is to you. Insure that your child knows that you value the time you have with him.

Q: WHAT IS WHOOPING COUGH?

Whooping cough is a very contagious respiratory illness caused by a bacte-ria with the scientific name Bordetella, which means “intense cough.” It is also called the “100 day cough,” since it can take more than three months for this cough to finally resolve.

Q: WHO CAN GET WHOOPING COUGH?

Anyone can contract whooping cough, although infants and young chil-dren have the highest morbidity. Death is unfortunately a real possibility, so this is a disease to take seriously. Often, the only manifestation in an adolescent or adult is a prolonged but milder cough, and some people might not even sus-pect they have whooping cough.

Q: WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Initially, whooping cough may look like a typical cold. However, a cold usu-ally resolves in about two weeks, while the cough associated with whooping

cough worsens with time instead of getting better. The cough generally pro-gresses to the point that the affected person “whoops” between coughing fits. However, not all people with the disease will experience this “whoop.” The cough may lead to vomiting. This stage can last up to eight weeks before it starts to improve. Don’t forget the af-fected person is still susceptible to other respiratory infections at the same time, which can be more intense due to the damage caused by the whooping cough bacteria. A fever is uncommon.

Q: ARE THERE COMPLICATIONS?

Whooping cough is a serious illness with serious complications, especially in infants. It can cause pneumonia, apnea, seizures and even death.

Q: HOW IS WHOOPING COUGH DIAGNOSED?

In addition to a high level of suspicion, three different laboratory methods can be used to diagnose whooping cough. These tests involve obtaining a speci-

Whooping cough, along with other viruses such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza, are among the many causes of respiratory illnesses that so commonly afflict children during the winter months.

men from the nasopharynx or blood, depending upon how long signs of the illness have been present.

Q: WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR

WHOOPING COUGH?Antibiotics are used but are most ef-

fective if started earlier in the illness. Antibiotic treatment is not likely to have a major impact on the course of the dis-ease, because most of the damage to the respiratory tract is done before diagnosis and treatment. The antibiotic may have a beneficial effect, however, by decreasing the chance of infecting others who have been near the person with whooping cough. Sometimes, close contacts of an infected person receive preventive an-tibiotics. This should be discussed with your doctor.

Q: CAN WHOOPING COUGH BE PREVENTED?

Prevention is always the best ap-proach. Vaccines are the most effec-tive method of prevention. Infants and children should receive their vaccines against pertussis and other illnesses ac-cording to the schedule outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention (CDC), American Academy of Pediatrics and other authorities with ad-vanced expertise in this area. These vac-cines are safe, and failure to give them to your child in a timely fashion exposes them to unnecessary risks of serious, potentially life-threatening illnesses such as pertussis.

Also, pregnant women should re-ceive a tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine during each pregnancy – preferably at 27 to 36 weeks of gesta-tion – to decrease the newborn’s chance of contracting pertussis. All others older than 11 should have one Tdap, especially if exposure to a new baby is expected. Many times, this will be the spouse of the pregnant mother or the relatives of the newborn baby in the household.

Seeing a baby suffer from this dis-ease is not only disheartening but can be outright frightening. Get your little ones vaccinated on time, and decrease their risk of contracting this terrible disease!
