M r. and Mrs. Michael Eu-gene Johnson are happy to announce the marriage of

their daughter, Erin Christine, to Mr. An-drew Barry Wallace, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bruce Wallace, Jr.

The ceremony, officiated by Reverend T. Daniel Irving of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, took place on January 31, 2015 at St. Paul’s United Method-ist Church. Dinner and dancing followed at The Bayou Club. The bride wore a silk organza and French Chantilly lace gown designed by Rivini. A custom neckline was created with an organza bow serving as the belt. She carried a bouquet of white and ivory garden and spray roses, ranuncu-lus and freesia. Magnolia leaves were used throughout the wedding, as the bride was looking to create a Southern, garden party atmosphere.

Erin attended Baylor University and graduated in 2012 with a degree in Com-munication Sciences and Disorders. She then went on to graduate from Baylor with her Master of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology in 2013. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Soror-ity. Erin is currently a speech-language pa-thologist for Spring Branch ISD. She and her siblings, Paige and Brad Johnson, grew up in Spring Branch. Andrew also attended Baylor University and graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Real Estate and Management. He is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Andrew is currently a Petroleum Landman with Brown, Godwin & Com-pany. Following a honeymoon in Belize, the newlyweds reside in Houston with their Boykin Spaniel, Hank.

C aitlin Ehlinger took things one step at a time. From taking dance classes as a child at Suzanne Semans Studio to starring in the lead role of Roxie Hart in

the Stratford Playhouse’s production of Chicago the fall of her senior year, Caitlin’s theatrical and musical experience has led to her debut as Peggy Sawyer in Broadway Across America’s 42nd Street national tour under the direction of co-author Mark Bramble and choreographed by Randy Skinner, who are both three-time Tony Award nominees.

Before Caitlin made her first appearance as Peggy Saw-yer, she came to love musical theatre by watching her sister Samantha perform in Stratford Playhouse musicals. The one she remembers most was Once on This Island. Caitlin fell in love with on-stage dancing, acting and singing. She found her inspiration from Chicago. “My experience playing Roxie Hart made me want to pursue my dreams of performing on Broadway even more,” said Caitlin.

Cece Prudhomme has been the theatre director at Strat-ford for 24 years and has helped Caitlin transform into a confident actress. “She has always been able to pick up the composition quickly and has a great stage presence,” Prud-homme said.

Caitlin’s future became definite when she starred in Crazy for You her sophomore year. “I knew I wanted to perform professionally when in one of the dance numbers, my body just took over and kept dancing, but mentally I was thinking, ‘I don’t think there’s anything else in the world I’d rather be doing right now. This makes me so happy.’”

It was from then on that the Ehlingers supported their daughter’s dreams, pursuing every avenue in reach to make

her dreams a reality. The family spent nearly every holiday in New York so that Caitlin could take dancing and acting classes under prominent names, including Randy Skinner. They worked their vacations around Skinner’s schedule so that she could be in as many of his classes as possible.

“When Caitlin was in eighth grade, she said her dream was to postpone college and dance for choreographer Randy Skinner on a national tour. And now, that’s exactly what she’s doing. We have supported Caitlin’s decision to take a gap year or two from college to see where her career leads her,” Caitlin’s mother, Kim Ehlinger, said.

In February, the opportunity presented itself, and Caitlin attended open call for 42nd Street and auditioned along with 500 other women. Callbacks continued for 10 grueling days, until she was finally cast for the lead role as Peggy Sawyer. “She had no idea that she would be cast as Peggy. She told me she would feel lucky enough just being in the chorus,” Kim said.

After Caitlin was given the role of Peggy, she signed a contract with Mark Bramble, director of 42nd Street. Kim explained, “It was funny because I remember getting a call

from ‘Bramble M.’ and I thought, ‘Sure-ly that is not actually Mark Bramble.’ But when I answered, it was him. He told me that Caitlin was so young he felt like he needed to talk to me before she signed a contract with him.” 42nd Street tours nationally through Sep-tember with performances in 49 cities. The show has gotten such rave reviews that the tour recently added more showings to the schedule.

Caitlin’s hard work was a long time in the making and something that she learned to chase on her own. “Work ethic is what it takes to put on a show and perform your best. Work hard and treat each moment as preparation for what’s next. There is always a new layer that you can add to yourself and your character,” Caitlin said.

The cast of 38 brings people from all over the world together. “I love working with all of these different people who have different stories that led them here,” Caitlin said. The cast becomes a family, dining together, traveling together and making friendships. “It’s a bond that carries onto the stage for sure.”

Caitlin’s advice for aspiring actress-es and actors is to “Work to be the best you. Learn how to order passions and priorities, and come back better each day.” Although she had many amazing teachers and supporters behind her, it is her relationship with dance teacher Ms. Susie who inspired her the most. “I would not be here without her. She is my rock,” Caitlin said. For now, Caitlin is enjoying performing on tour, but she someday hopes to make a name for her-self on the stages of Broadway.

When humans talk to animals, tone inflection can influence how the animal responds. Yelling or praising a pet elicits different reactions. Similarly, a pooch or kitty communicates by howling, whining, barking, growling, snorting or crying to let the owner know what is happening. With cats, the purring is a calming sound as opposed to a threatening “meow!”

When owners use excessive verbal-ization, pets think they are whining, and they seem to say, “You my dear need to be quiet!” It is the same thing when dogs and cats constantly chatter. Grow-ing up on the farm, I had a dog named Poo Poo. He thought his name was No No, because he barked constantly. It was okay if he was warning us that a skunk was in the yard but irritating if he just wanted to howl at the moon. After a while, that was a no no!

My precious pooch, Princess Grace Kelly, loves Busy Bones, and she knows exactly how to get one. She waits un-til my hubby, Gene Haynes, leaves the house, then runs to my cat’s room and starts barking and terrorizing sweet Tam-my Whynot. To stop that behavior, I give her a Busy Bone, and she is off with her treat and wagging her tail. Yep! She has me trained.

Barbara explained, “Gene Kitten sits up on his hind legs and ‘tweets,’ which is a high pitch chatter that tells me he wants food. Jan Kitten stands on her hind legs and scratches me all over with her tiny, soft paws while asking for food with a soft meow. When that doesn’t work, she heads to the

room where the food is, puts the paper food dish in her mouth and bangs it on the floor. She has been known to bite the paper dish and spit it on the floor if all else fails.”

Susan Hulburt’s love is a Cavalier Spaniel named Samantha. Those two are shadows to each other. No matter where Hulburt is, her sweet Samantha is near her having a snooze. The moment she hears Hulburt’s laptop close, she gets her ball, which is always near, and sits at attention, ready for her first play session. She can hear that laptop close even in her dreams. “What a precious pup she is,” said Hulburt.

All-Star Bowling Benefit

H urricane season has arrived, and there has already been an outbreak of flooding across the Houston area. Are you

ready for this or some other disaster?As a single mother, it is up to me to keep my children safe

when any disaster happens. Here are a few questions about disaster preparation that friends have asked me.

Q What is a bug-out bagor a 72 hour bag?

A When disaster strikes, two things are immediately essential: getting out of the

area and getting out of there quickly. Also known as a BOB, a bug-out bag is designed to help people do just that. It usually comes in the form of a heavy-duty backpack containing everything needed during and immediately after any emergency.

Q What essentials shoulda BOB contain?

A My BOBs contain items that will help my family and me survive for 72 hours during

any disaster. Everyone in my family has their own backpack with most of these supplies: weapons, map of area, compass, binoculars, food for three days such as beef jerky, sunflower seeds, protein bars, tuna packets and dried fruit, water for three days, a water purification LifeStraw, copies of birth certificate, driver’s license and insurance card, cash, extra clothing, first aid kit, antibiotics, pain medicine, duct tape, fire starter equipment, a two-way radio with extra batteries, hygiene products, toilet paper, garbage bags, flashlights, headlamps, glow

sticks, survival blankets, sleeping bag, small tent, sunglasses, hand sanitizer, bug repellant, sunscreen, whistle, can opener, coffee and a deck of playing cards.

Q If we decide not to leaveour home, how much water is needed to keep our family

safe?

A One gallon per person per day is the minimum amount of water you should have

on hand. Don’t forget extra for your pets. Always have water purification equipment, tablets or a LifeStraw. You will use water for things other than just drinking. Remember, you can never have too much water!

Q What kind of food should I have stored at my home in case a disaster hits?

A During a disaster, the last thing you need to do is go to the grocery store, so it is

important to have food stored at home. Create your food storage based on your family’s needs and likes, and don’t forget to have a manual can opener. Here is what I have in my food storage on a daily basis: 10 pounds of dried beans, 20 cans of vegetables, 20 cans of fruit, 20 cans of meat, 10 canned main dishes, two large jars of peanut butter, two large jars of Nutella, two large jars of powdered drink mix, water, two pounds of powdered milk, five pounds of salt, 10 pounds of pasta, five pounds of pancake mix, 10 jars of spaghetti sauce, 20 cans of soup and broth, a large jar of oil, hard candy, crackers, cereal and protein bars.

How worried do I have to be if a front baby tooth is fractured?

This depends on how large the fracture is. Small fractures con-tained to the enamel (outer layer) of the tooth are only an aesthetic issue and can, but do not have to be repaired. They do not cause dis-comfort or sensitivity. Larger frac-tures that involve dentin or pulp (middle layers of the tooth) need to be treated to prevent infections or sensitivity. You always need to con-tact your dentist, however, to make sure there are no fractures of bone or root coincidental with the visible tooth chip.

What about apermanent tooth?

Fractures of permanent teeth, unless very small, should be re-paired with composites (fillings) or crowns, depending on the size of the fracture and age of the child. If frac-tures involve nerve/pulp tissue, and blood on the tooth is visible at the line of fracture, your dentist should be seen immediately to prevent fu-ture abscess and root canal treat-ment. However, if the fracture is contained to the enamel only, your child can be seen on the next busi-ness day, but as soon as possible.

Many readers enjoyed this ar-ticle from a few years ago, and I thought it was worth reprinting.

Summer should be a wonderful time for a child – a time when memories are made that last a life-time. Play your part to insure this happens!

DO:

1 Ask what your child would like to do for the summer. Consider summer camps, Vacation

Bible School and social plans they might want to participate in – particularly for an older child.

2 Set a specific schedule, put it on the calendar and let your child know exactly when the child

will be with each parent. Stick to the schedule to avoid confusion for your child or the other parent.

3 Confer with and get the other parent’s ap-proval, in writing, if you want to switch periods

of possession.

4 Reassure your child that you are okay with both parents being involved in the child’s life.

5 Accept that the child loves both of their par-ents – and even stepparents!

DON’T:

1 Be a “no show” for your child. This is akin to being stood up by a parent. The pain is great,

and the feeling of abandonment is profound for the child.

2 Plan an activity for your child during the other parent’s periods of possession for a non-

emergency event, thereby sabotaging summer plans the other parent has with the child. A child can be conflicted and feel that he has to choose.

3 Interrogate your child after a visit with the other parent. It’s acceptable to ask general

questions about their visit with the other parent, but don’t snoop.

4 Make your child feel bad about enjoying his visit with the other parent.

5 Have a “significant other” with you or pawn your child off to a “significant other” or “sitter”

during your periods of possession. Have a lot of one-on-one time with your child, thereby affirming how important your child is to you. Insure that your child knows that you value the time you have with him.

Q: WHAT IS WHOOPING COUGH?

Whooping cough is a very contagious respiratory illness caused by a bacte-ria with the scientific name Bordetella, which means “intense cough.” It is also called the “100 day cough,” since it can take more than three months for this cough to finally resolve.

Q: WHO CAN GET WHOOPING COUGH?

Anyone can contract whooping cough, although infants and young chil-dren have the highest morbidity. Death is unfortunately a real possibility, so this is a disease to take seriously. Often, the only manifestation in an adolescent or adult is a prolonged but milder cough, and some people might not even sus-pect they have whooping cough.

Q: WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Initially, whooping cough may look like a typical cold. However, a cold usu-ally resolves in about two weeks, while the cough associated with whooping

cough worsens with time instead of getting better. The cough generally pro-gresses to the point that the affected person “whoops” between coughing fits. However, not all people with the disease will experience this “whoop.” The cough may lead to vomiting. This stage can last up to eight weeks before it starts to improve. Don’t forget the af-fected person is still susceptible to other respiratory infections at the same time, which can be more intense due to the damage caused by the whooping cough bacteria. A fever is uncommon.

Q: ARE THERE COMPLICATIONS?

Whooping cough is a serious illness with serious complications, especially in infants. It can cause pneumonia, apnea, seizures and even death.

Q: HOW IS WHOOPING COUGH DIAGNOSED?

In addition to a high level of suspicion, three different laboratory methods can be used to diagnose whooping cough. These tests involve obtaining a speci-

men from the nasopharynx or blood, depending upon how long signs of the illness have been present.

Q: WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR

WHOOPING COUGH?Antibiotics are used but are most ef-

fective if started earlier in the illness. Antibiotic treatment is not likely to have a major impact on the course of the dis-ease, because most of the damage to the respiratory tract is done before diagnosis and treatment. The antibiotic may have a beneficial effect, however, by decreasing the chance of infecting others who have been near the person with whooping cough. Sometimes, close contacts of an infected person receive preventive an-tibiotics. This should be discussed with your doctor.

Q: CAN WHOOPING COUGH BE PREVENTED?

Prevention is always the best ap-proach. Vaccines are the most effec-tive method of prevention. Infants and children should receive their vaccines against pertussis and other illnesses ac-cording to the schedule outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention (CDC), American Academy of Pediatrics and other authorities with ad-vanced expertise in this area. These vac-cines are safe, and failure to give them to your child in a timely fashion exposes them to unnecessary risks of serious, potentially life-threatening illnesses such as pertussis.

Also, pregnant women should re-ceive a tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine during each pregnancy – preferably at 27 to 36 weeks of gesta-tion – to decrease the newborn’s chance of contracting pertussis. All others older than 11 should have one Tdap, especially if exposure to a new baby is expected. Many times, this will be the spouse of the pregnant mother or the relatives of the newborn baby in the household.

Seeing a baby suffer from this dis-ease is not only disheartening but can be outright frightening. Get your little ones vaccinated on time, and decrease their risk of contracting this terrible disease!

men at Spindletop who did not main-tain partnerships rarely survived as significant players. The major reason is that they failed to spread the high risks of exploration and production over enough ventures. As evidenced in numerous letters and oil industry pub-lications, Staiti had many partnerships and operated under several companies including Texas Exploration Company, Prairie Oil Corporation, Pay Streak Oil, Valley Oil Corporation, Houston Petroleum Company, Pathfinder Oil Corporation, Powhatten Oil and Hous-ton-Oklahoma Oil.

Not only was he a successful oil-man, but Staiti documented his life in hundreds of photographs captur-ing the lifestyle of a prosperous young Houston oil family making the most of this nascent industry. They also high-lighted the methodologies used in the early days by those in the industry to search for, extract and store oil. Snap-shots and professional photos taken on trips to the oil fields showed the men and women of the family in their 1920s fashions standing feet away from pools of oil and derricks in the background.

While Henry and Odelia had no chil-dren of their own, their grand house in

O n January 10, 1901, the Lucas Gusher ushered in the Spin-dletop oil boom that changed

the course of the world’s history. It wasn’t the first successful well drilled in the world or even in Texas, but it represents the beginning of an indus-try that still drives the economy of Texas and Houston today. Many well-known companies developed as a result of this early 20th century oil boom, but many more independent men also suc-cessfully brought in gushers through-out Texas. One of those men was Henry Staiti.

Born in 1876 in Marshall, Texas to parents Santo Staiti, an Italian im-migrant, and Mary Jane Deal Staiti of Tennessee, Henry Staiti received his education in geology at Marshall Col-lege and began oil prospecting work in McLennan County. Just before his career took off, Staiti married Odelia Reisner of Waco in 1901. The couple moved to Beaumont just after the Lucas Gusher made headlines. In 1905, Staiti moved his family and base of op-erations for his oil business to Houston.

Wildcatters like Staiti who settled into stable business circles tended to endure in the high-risk industry. The

the Westmoreland Addition was fre-quently home to their extended fam-ily. Three of Henry’s brothers – Gro-ver, Charles and Albert – lived with Henry at various intervals and worked with him in the oil business. Odelia’s five sisters were also frequent visitors. Beautiful photos of their extensive gar-dens and interior views of their home illustrate the lifestyle afforded to the Staitis as a result of Henry’s success in the burgeoning oil industry.

After nearly three decades as a suc-cessful wildcatter, Henry died on Octo-ber 2, 1933 of a heart attack in his office in the Houston Chronicle building. The Staitis’ grand home is preserved and maintained by The Heritage Society as a historic house museum in Sam Hous-ton Park. Many of the photographs donated by the family to The Heritage Society are currently on display in the exhibit Profile of a Houston Oil Family: Photographs from the Staiti/Reisner Family Collection through the end of June.

This hand-colored photograph, circa 1930, shows Raccoon Bend, one of the fields in which Henry Staiti successfully brought in wells and a joint venture with Henry’s Valley Oil Corp. and Humble Oil and Refining Company.
