June 2016 Research Briefs from Institutional Research Feedback Stemming from the New Faculty Orientation Sessions Fall 2015 Survey Instruments: At the conclusion of each orientation session, participants were asked to offer feedback via a brief survey comprising both scaled items and two or three open-ended questions. Scaled items were measured on a seven point response scale in which lower scores reflected less agreement with the item and higher scores reflected greater agreement with the item. The open-ended question(s) for the 15 orientation sessions asked respondents to offer suggestions about other relevant material they would have liked to have learned about, describe what was most meaningful or useful about the session, and provide additional comments. A final assessment was completed at the end of the orientation which again consisted of 7-point scaled response items regarding the orientation overall, as well as open-ended questions regarding the topics covered and impact of the orientation. Findings: The tables below are presented on the basis of each of the 15 orientation sessions. The final tables (Tables 59-64) contain information pertaining to the final orientation assessment. For each orientation session, there is a table presenting findings stemming from the scaled survey items (e.g., Table 1) and two to three tables illustrating the open-ended responses for the session (e.g., Table 2). The tables presenting findings stemming from responses to the scaled items (e.g., Table 1, Table 4, Table 8) contain the percentage of responses per survey item that were equal to a score between one and four (low statement agreement) along with the percentage of responses that were equal to a score between five and seven (high statement agreement); additionally, the corresponding mean response is reported for each item. Table 60 illustrates the difference in responses to perception items posed to participants both prior to and upon completion of the new faculty orientation. Pre- and posttest differences were examined via an effect size (d), a measure of the extent to which observed differences are practically significant; educational researchers typically consider effect sizes of .20 or larger as indicative of meaningful or practically significant differences, with values of .80 or larger as indicative of large or robust differences. Between 15 and 27 participants responded to each survey. Collectively, findings suggest that participants were pleased with their experience in the orientation sessions and with the project. This is illustrated by the frequency with which 100% of respondents offered a score of five or greater on the scaled items along with the corresponding mean responses. Mean ratings for all but four scaled items across all 15 sessions were above 6.00, with none less than 5.00. Moreover, open-ended feedback suggests that participants were satisfied with the material presented in the sessions. One common theme among the comments received appears to reflect a desire for more time; many respondents indicated they felt the session was rushed, there was too much information to be covered in the allotted time, discussions had to be cut short due to time restrictions, and some even indicated certain topics should be expanded to a full-day session or over multiple sessions. I THINK BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF THE GROUP THE TOPICS WERE SOMETIMES RUSHED AND NEW FACULTY WHO WANTED TO ASK QUESTIONS WERE NOT ALWAYS ABLE TO. ALSO THE DAY OF THE CAMPUS TOURS WAS REALLY OVERWHELMING. IT MIGHT BE NICE TO SPLIT THAT UP TO TWO DAYS.

23. THERE WERE NUMEROUS GOOD EXAMPLES OF CLASSROOM TEACHING TECHNIQUES. IN THIS SENSE, THE NFO FELT AS MUCH LIKE A "NEW FACULTY TRAINING" AS IT DID AN "ORIENTATION" MUCH OF THE EMPHASIS IN THIS AREA WAS NOT USEFUL FOR MY AREA. AT THE SAME TIME, SOME ASPECTS WERE HELPFUL.

I WAS ABLE TO MEET COLLEAGUES WHO I COULD BOUNCE IDEAS OFF OF AND SHARE THIS EXPERIENCE WITH. THAT WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT NFO! IT TRULY HAS MADE ME FEEL WELCOME & AT HOME! I KNOW I WANT TO BE HERE FOR AT LEAST 30 YEARS. I FEEL LIKE I CAN GROW AND DEVELOP HERE. THANK YOU!
