Venues range from an elegant wedding on Nob Hill, to a forest picnic in Carmel Valley. The music covers a very wide spectrum from Broadway to Bach, and back. The trio was selected to perform at the gala dinner celebrating the 50 year anni- versary of the introduction of the song, “I Left My heart In San Fran- cisco”. The performance took place in The Venetian Room of The Fairmont Hotel where Tony Bennet, who was in attendance, intro- duced the iconic piece 50 years before. Steve's bass playing style and all around musicality keeps him one of the busiest musicians in the entire Bay Area. Peter Di Bono has played nearly every type of music, and in every setting imaginable. Performances include musical theater and guest soloist with Bay Area symphony orchestras. A winner of many musical competitions, Peter won the then version of America’s Got Talent while in high school as well as The Bank Of America Award for music. His many musical styles include classical, jazz, Italian, French, German – “You name it, I do it!”. Peter has an active teaching practice with over 20 students, and is on faculty with The Community Music Center in San Francisco. On July 10th we will have a Jam Session with new music. Sunday was a packed program. Not only did we have great pre-program events with in-dividual players but our accordionists had a half hour class from Jana Maas which was rich in practical ideas to enhance the sound of our music with simple “adders , volume control, and techniques” to make our music more musical. It was a good little lesson. She then followed with a concert of her special tunes. Thanks to Janna.

Doris Sprugasci delighted us with her flawless music. She admitted that she practiced to sound that good. A good thing to keep in mind for all of us.

A very special guy got some special attention today. William DeMichelis turned 39 again today and to the delight of us all, Doris played Happy Birthday and Norma sung along. William has been a great club member not only with his limitless ability to play beautifully but the time and contributions he has made to the club. Thank you William And I hope you had a very Happy Birthday. Thanks to you all for making this a very special club.

SVAS got a pleasant start with Eric Scheel accompanied by his young friend, Caitlin. They played Italian songs. The flute and accordion are a nice combination. Do this again Eric and Caitlin.

Garland Cheatham entertained us with a variety of songs that we love to sing along with and many did. Garland has a fine repertoire that he plays without aid of written music.

Don Savant just gets better and better with his easy style with a hint of jazz. It’s always a pleasure to just sit, listen, and relax and feel his expression.

Jana Maas who has 30 years of experience teaching music in public school met her challenge with the group of SVAS members. We were all so eager to see if we could follow her instruction that we sounded like an orchestra tuning up. Jana has the patience of a saint and truly is an excellent teacher. She gave us tips on improving our technique, fills, endings plus more. The handout was very helpful and well done. Thanks so much Jana and come back as often as you can!

Jana Mass entertained us with an enjoyable repertoire and pointed out the use of many of the techniques that she taught in her workshop. “All of You” using some staccato for variety, “Baby Face” 1st verse single notes, 2nd verse chorded, “Pizza Polka” very clean, in order to hear each note. Jana played a new song that she is working on, “Wrong Note Polka”. It was quite unique as you could tell the wrong notes &/or chord by where it fell in the song. It sure sounded like she played only the wrong notes that were written.

The Raffle Winners were Pam Kawashima - pig playing an accordion & lacquered box, Francis, Pam’s Mom-wine, Ann Butera-wine, George Ford-CD, Gloria Tapogna-candy, Betty Lou Willde-candy, Sue Cristallo-CD, Lou Basso-necklace, Siyuan Donnelly-CD and Mary Barbara Zorio-book, William DeMiclelis, being William, gave his gift to Doris Sprugasci.

Doris Sprugasci put on an outstanding performance

with her upbeat choice of music. Music is such a big part of Doris’s life. I, your reporter, have seen her play in Campbell with her daughters holding umbrellas to give her a little well deserved and needed shade. You’re a trooper, Doris. We enjoyed “Alpine Polka,” ” Left Right Polka” Brazilia”, “Tic Toc Polka” and “Bogalusa Strut.” We also enjoyed some upbeat waltzes; play on her new flashy electronic Petosa.

Doris played “Happy Birthday” to William DeMichelis while Norma and the audience sang along.

Half -Time entertainment was provided by our youngest member - Siyuan Donnelly who started playing music in his kin-dergarten class in Shanghai when he was four years old. Since June, he has become a student of Mike Zampiceni. Siyuan has great stage presence. He will be our next generations shining star. We all hope more of these youngsters will take up the study of our beloved instru-ment.

Popular Song History

Just Because Polka

This famous song was written by Sydney Robin. It was originally recorded by Nelstone’s Hawaiians (Hubert Nelson and James D. Touchstone in 1929. It was recorded by the Shel-ton brothers in 1933. The Bob & Joe Shelton wrote the lyrics for the song. Frankie Yank-ovic’s version was later recorded in 1948. Elvis Presley recorded it in 1954 and later it was again recorded by Paul McCartney. In 1964 Al Hirt recorded his version of this song. There were 17 issues of “Just Because” in the 1950’s-60’s.

Frank Yankovic and His Yanks had the most famous version (1947). After World War II Frank went back to his home in Cleveland to resume his career as a bar owner and musi-cian. His friend Johnny Pecon, the great accordionist, was one of Franks friends and they hung out at the bar all hours of the day and night. Both of these Slovenian accordionists were the best of friends. Frank asked Pecon and his arranger Joe Trolli to create a polka-sounding bridge for the song, which they did.

The two combined their accordions and made big hits in Cleveland. Yankovic signed on with Colulmbia recording company for 26 years. Credits: Wiki, Library of Congress -KC

Rene’ Sevieri played his beautiful

accordion that he has had since he was a boy. Rene’ played completely from memory and played close to 50 tunes. He sings with ease in Italian and English. He is truly a spirited entertainer. As Jim Betto said “It makes me tired just think-ing about all that he accomplished in the time he played”. A few of the songs he played were “Brazil”, “Fernando’s Hide a Way”, “Just Because”, a couple of Tom Jones, “Granada”. He plays with such

feeling you could see the bull fight. He took re-quests, and gave away one of his CDs. Collette Ogatu answered the question, “Which group in the 60s preceded the “Beetles”? answer- “Dave Clark 5” out of England. Rene’s stamina is unbelievable, as he played one fast tune after another, and showed no sign of tiring. We hope to hear much more from Rene’ Sevieri.
