season! It is Brittney’s fi rst season playing badminton and she plays with poise, confi dence and a competitive spirit that allows her to battle in all situations. Brittney with her partner Trista Duncan, won the gold medal in Midget girls’ doubles and qualifi ed for the Zone competition. At the Zones competition the pair also won the gold medal and helped St. Mary’s earn the banner for sixth straight year in a row. Way to play Britt, we are excited to see what success you have next season!!

Th is week the St. Mary's Athlete of the week is Preslee Muller. Preslee had a great week of badminton, taking many golds and advancing to Zones. She won a gold medal in bantam singles at the County of Lethbridge district meet and will represent St. Mary's at Zones in Lethbridge this weekend. Th is past weekend Preslee competed in the St. Mary's tournament and fi nished in second place competing in a higher division. Preslee is a hard worker and makes appropriate adjustments when coaches critique her play. Unfortunately Preslee injured her shoulder and was unable to compete in the doubles portion on Saturday, so instead took on tournament duties. Preslee was invaluable on Saturday as she assisted in running the tournament with the organizers. Way to go Preslee you rock!!

Our St. Mary's Athlete of the Week is Neah Salazar. Neah has had an amazing season in badminton as a doubles competitor medalling in every tournament she has been in. When asked by coaches to play singles in our district league tournament she embraced this decision and worked hard in her new role. Neah had a great showing at districts and fi nished fourth over all. Neah went on to take second in singles in our St. Mary's tournament this past weekend, losing in a very tight fi nal to a girl who hasn't lost all year. In doubles play Neah won the gold on Saturday. Great job Neah, you have been joy to watch and coach throughout the season!

Hallie Horvath earned our St. Mary's Athlete of the Week for her performance the County of Lethbridge Junior High Athletic Association Track Meet. Hallie won fi rst place in every event she entered, broke two track records, and earned the gold medal aggregate for juvenile girls!!! Wow!!! Hallie was in the 200m, which she set a new record of 27.26 seconds, the 400m, triple jump and was a member of our 4 x 100m relay team which also set a new track record of 59.03 seconds. What a great performance!! Although Hallie qualifi ed to represent St. Mary's at the Zone track meet this week in all her events she was unable to go as she was attending the Outdoor Education camp out. Hallie we are so proud of all your accomplishments in track, you are a star!! We can't wait to see how you do next year!!!

Herman Wiebe is our St. Mary's athlete of the week for his performance in track and fi eld. Herman qualifi ed at the district meet for the 3000m and then went of to compete in the Zone competition in Lethbridge. At Zones Herman earned 2nd place in the competition. Herman chose one of the toughest events to compete in and worked hard to train for the event. Way to go!

With summer approaching, most of us spend at least a little time in the sun every day. You may know someone that works outdoors, and others who use indoor tanning equipment. The fact is that ultraviolet radiation from both the sun and indoor tanning is linked to not only skin cancers, but also many other health risks including eye damage, a weakened immune system and an increased risk of other types of cancer. Protect yourself and your family at home, at work and at play. For more information visit: albertapreventscancer.ca/reduce-your-risk/limit-uv-rays/

Check Your BreathHave you ever tried to check your breath by breathing into your hand? Most of us have done this but it is not a true test. When we breathe we do not use our throat the same way as when you talk. Talking brings out odors from our mouth, where most bad breath starts. If we do not brush and floss daily, odor-producing bacteria accumulate on food left between our teeth, around our gums and on our tongue. The sulfur compounds released by these bacteria make our breath smell bad. Here are some tips you can share with your teen:

Brush all the surfaces of your teeth for at least 2 minutes twice a day.Include brushing your tongue where bacteria love to hang out.Floss daily to clean between your teeth and gums where a toothbrush cannot reach.Choose an antibacterial mouth rinse to supplement your daily cleaning.Drink water to stay hydrated and wash away food particles that cause bad breath.

Common causes of bad breath include:Foods like garlic and onions. These enter our bloodstream after digestion and are carried to our lungs and breathed out. Smoking and using oral tobacco products. Not only does their use produce bad breath, tobacco products can cause tooth decay and gum disease, both of which also lead to bad breath.Having a dry mouth with no saliva to wash away food particles. Causes of dry mouth include mouth breathing during sleeping or when stuffed up with a cold, smoking and some prescription medications.Medical conditions like respiratory infections, diabetes, liver and kidney disease can also cause bad breath.

Seeing Through the VapourAcross Canada, 20 percent of youth between the ages of 15 and 19 report having tried e-cigarettes. A tobacco-like product emerging in popularity, e-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that have cartridges with liquid chemicals in them. Heat from a battery powered atomizer turns the chemicals into vapour that’s inhaled, which is commonly referred to as vaping. There are no standards or labeling requirements for vapes. This makes it hard to know exactly what is in the liquid. Because chemicals in the cartridges can vary, it’s hard to know what users and people nearby are breathing in. What we do know isvapour has been found to have toxic chemicals and cancer causing agents. And even though it is illegal in Canada to sell vapes or liquids that have nicotine, tests done by Health Canada found about half of vape liquids that were labeled “nicotine-free” actually contained nicotine.

What do parents need to know?Nicotine can affect brain development in teens. Teaching your teen the negative effects early could make the difference. Some e-cigarettes have candy flavouring, which could make them appealing to someone who has not smoked before, especially teens.E-cigarettes don’t leave a smell like tobacco so it’s going to be harder to know if your teen is vaping.

What can parents do?Be clear that smoking of any kind is off limits.Educate your kids that e-cigarettes may contain nicotine which is highly addictive.Learn as much as you can about e-cigarettes and know what they look like.Watch for signs of use, such as dry cough, as well as mouth and throat irritation.

Nicotine PoisoningFound in the leaves of the tobacco plant, nicotine is a powerful drug. It is highly addictive and very poisonous. While it is bitter tasting in its natural form, many tobacco and tobacco-like products contain tempting flavour additives (such as candy or fruit) to mask the bitterness, which can make such products more appealing to kids.

Nicotine is easily absorbed if swallowed or spilled on the skin. Even a small amount of liquid nicotine (such as that found in some e-cigarette cartridges) can be harmful, or even fatal, to a young child. If you use tobacco, or tobacco-like products, such as e-cigarettes or hookah, it is important to keep them away from children and pets to help prevent nicotine poisoning. Studies have found that some tobacco-like products labelled as nicotine-free or herbal do contain nicotine, so it’s important to take precautions. Nicotine is also found in medications used to treat tobacco addiction. These are known as Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRTs), which include:

GumPatchLozenge

Mouth SprayInhaler

As with any medication, it is important to ensure NRTs are kept out of the reach of children. Be sure to dispose of these products carefully. In particular, NRTs and the liquids found in e-cigarettes, should be stored and disposed of like poison. If liquid comes in contact with skin or is swallowed, or if you suspect your child has ingested tobacco products, contact the Poison and Drug Information Service (PADIS) toll-free at 1-800-332-1414 for advice and referral. For more information and support for tobacco use, visit albertaquits.ca or call 1-866-710-QUIT(7848).

The Tooth Decay Process: A Tug of WarDid you know that a dental cavity is the result of a tooth decay process that happens over time? Throughout the day a tug of war takes place in your child’s mouth. On one side is dental plaque feeding on sugar and starch and producing acids that eat away the minerals in the hard enamel layer of their tooth. On the other side is saliva, rich in calcium and phosphate, and fluoride that are ready to replace minerals lost during an “acid attack”.

This tug of war goes on all day long as they eat and drink. But when there are more acid attacks than opportunities for saliva and fluoride to repair their teeth, the enamel is permanently weakened and destroyed, forming a cavity. Teeth then loose the battle to tooth decay. Win the tug of war by encouraging your child to:

Drink tap water with fluoride to quench thirst (when possible).Limit between-meal snacks and drinks to decrease acid attacks on teeth.Save candy, cookies, soda, and other sugary drinks for special occasions. Consume these at meal times when more saliva is produced.Brush with a pea-size amount of fluoride toothpaste two times a day. Spit when finished brushing and don’t rinse. You can also ask your dentist about fluoride gel, foam or varnish for extra protection.
