TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE

Hedland Senior High School students danced, acted and sung their hearts out while artists and photographers showed off their creations at the annual Hedland Senior High School Arts Showcase this month.

The evening’s entertainment began with student’s photography, visual art and media projects on show in the Matt Dann Theatre and Cinema foyer where colours and moods were palpable for viewers.

Following the visual arts show, Dodi Tuando began the performance section of the night with a beautiful rendition of Let Her Go by Passenger followed by drama and dance pieces choreographed both by students themselves and with teachers over semester one, ending in a dance and drama combination piece from the Specialist Arts Program students.

This year the school was able to have the

year 6’s from surrounding primary schools included in some of the pieces which was a positive experience for all involved.

It was obvious by students faces on and off stage they were enjoying their performances as much as the audience in the stands..

With an even number of mainstream students and Specialist Arts Program students performing and showing work on the night, it’s a testament to the commitment and creativity of all the students at Hedland Senior High School.

Students are reminded that they can continue their artistic endeavours in the after school SAP workshops with mid-year applications now open until the end of term.

PRINCIPAL'S REPORT (cont)

We will build learning pathways for all students so they can enjoy success at school. All students will be counselled into a vocational pathway in year 11 that will lead to their chosen post-school destination. We intend to be a school recognised for excellence.

Secondly our ‘Toolkit for success’ initiative is a really important element in our push to improve student engagement and achievement at school. All students are expected to come to school ready to learn, and an essential component is their learning toolkit – items all students must bring with them every day. I look forward to all parents supporting this initiative.

Finally arriving at school on time every day is a fundamental requirement for all

students. I cannot imagine any person arriving late to work and expecting to keep their job. The best way to learn to be punctual is to practice being punctual and school is the best place to develop this habit.

It makes it very difficult for teachers to run their lessons effectively when some students arrive late. Often the most important part of the lesson is the beginning when key concepts are introduced, and students who miss out here often miss out on that lesson’s leaning. Please ensure your children arrive on time for school every day. We will be running detention classes for those students who arrive late without a legitimate excuse.

WELCOME TO HEDLAND

On Friday 18th May our talented Year 10 Dance students wowed the audience at this year’s Welcome to Hedland celebrations.

They performed two dances – an Irish themed dance called “Celtic Rock” and a hip-hop inspired piece titled “Lose Control”.

The students worked tirelessly in class and during break times rehearsing for the performance and were very proud to represent Hedland Senior High School.

Congratulations again to the wonderful students for their excellent performance.

HEDLAND SQUARE ART EXHIBITIONThe students of Hedland SHS were excited to participate in the Hedland Square Art Exhibition.

Each year group was given a specific project and concept to respond to, such as: portraiture, modern memento mori and experiences/emotions. The students created a series of small artworks in the development of their ideas and the best of these artworks were selected for exhibition.

The students predominantly used painting and drawing media create their beautiful artworks on paper and canvas, with lots of different points of view displayed.

Paige Hill, Yasmine Mohammed Atip, Monique Vrancic and Layne Dhu-Dickie were named the winners of the exhibition at the Welcome To Hedland Expo.

More than 300 students took to the Wanangkura Stadium this month for the annual Careers Expo.

This year the Expo moved into a new interactive format where students could experience first hand aspects of the organisations if they choose to enter into different industries after school.

Throughout the course of the day students interacted, asked questions and explored their potential career futures with over 30 industry group representatives present from across Hedland.

The students were able to access career information directly from the people in those careers and were able to discover the multiple pathways available to them and their peers.

From how to properly splint an arm with WA Country Health Services to using real equipment with the likes of the Pilbara Regiment, BHP and FMG, the students actively participated in the expo and feedback was glowing with their behaviour and enthusiasm for the day’s event.

Hedland Senior High School would like to thanks Bloodwood Tree and the Hedland Collective for their hard-work in ensuring the Expo was on offer again f-or 2018 in an interactive and career heavy experience for the students.

Parents and caregivers are reminded that payments for contributions and charges are now overdue.

Payments from parents are used towards the cost of providing an educa-tional program that meets the require-ments of the Curriculum Framework.

For Year 7 to 10 the small voluntary contributions of $235.00 will open doors for your child to most of our courses.

For Year 11 and 12 subject charges at Hedland Senior High School are com-pulsory. Other optional costs will also incur additional charges where payment is compulsory.

All Year 11 and 12 charges are now overdue and payment is required by the end of Term 2. If a payment plan has not been entered into then students who are doing Certificate course and/or high cost courses will be removed from those subjects.

CHOOSE MATHS DAY

Hedland Senior High School Board will be holding a Public Board Meet-ing this Thursday June 28.

The Hedland community is invited to the first public board meeting for 2018, unlike regular board meetings where the public is welcome to attend, this meeting will allow for interaction with board members from the public.

The evening will begin at 4pm and will consist of a Principal’s Report followed by an open floor session where parents and community members will be able to ask board members about the school, their role as board members and future plans for Hedland Senior High School.

The agenda for the meeting can be found on the Hedland Senior High School website.

For more information contact Jackie Smith on 9172 8000 or [email protected].

Hedland Senior High School’s Year 10 students delved into the world of Maths last month after the school hosted Choose Maths Day on May 31st.

Hosted in partnership with the Australian Mathematical Science Institute, the initia-tive is designed to stop a disturbing, and steady, decline in the number of students studying advanced maths around the country.

It also aims to breakdown the perception that “boys brains are more suited to maths than girls” and thus, encourage young women to give it a go.

The day saw the students take part in

powerful discussions about careers involving maths and listened to advice from regional maths champions across Hedland.

From Jewelery design to doctors and ev-erything in between, the students lapped up the knowledge of the regional champi-ons and have come out the other end with new perspectives and ideas about their future pathways.

Hedland Senior High School would like to thank all the regional champions who came to engage our students in meaning-ful conversations about Maths and the careers heights it can take them.

PUBLIC BOARD MEETING

FUNDRAISE FOR CANCER Hedland Senior High School would like to thank Caltex for their partnership with the high school and a new initiative beginning this week.

Students in uniform will no longer be served before, during and after school without being accompanied by a parent or adult. This partnership has been fostered through a mutual goal of having children in school and on time throughout the school term.

Signage will be placed at the Caltex advising of the new changes and students have been informed at assembly this week.

The commitment to youth in Hedland is a whole community goal and we thank and encourage any individual, organisation or group who joins us in the pursuit of excellence at Hedland Senior High School.

Former Hedland Senior High School student and softball extraordinaire, Gemima Rahman is raising money in the fight against cancer.

Sixteen year old Gemima has start-ed a GoFundMe page where she talks of people close to her being diagnosed with varying types on cancers some of which have been fortunate to beat the illness, some continuing to fight.

This has inspired her to raise money by cutting 40cm off her hair (Dads still struggling with this deci-sion) to support the cause. Her hair will be donated to make a wig.

If you would like to help Gemima in her mission to help find a cure for cancer visit her GoFundMe page, the link is pinned to the Hedland Senior High School Facebook page.
