Grace and Peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Thewindhascertainlybeenblowing!Forthefirsttimein45years,duststormwarningshavebeenissued.Withthelateblizzardwehad,itseemsthepollenismuchfiercerthanithasbeeninrecentlyyears.ThisisourfirstspringhereinNebraska,andIlearnedthehardwaythatNebraskaallergensaredifferentformethanmywell-controlledeastcoastallergies.Wateryeyes,sneezingepisodes,asthmaattacksandhiveshaveallconvergedonmeinthelastthreeweeks.Throughover-the-counterAllegraandnosespray,Ihavemanagedprettywelloverthelastyears.Butwhenmyphysicalabilitytotakeinairiscompromised,itbecomesamuchmorepressingissue.Nothavingenoughoxygencanmakemefeeltiredanddizzy.Literallynotget-tingenoughaircanindeedtakemylifeifitgetstothatpoint.Itisprettyseriousstuff.
IwouldsaythesameistrueforourrelationshipwithChrist.Whenwedon’tnurtureourfaith,weallowtheworriestochokeus.Whenwedon’tattendworshipregularly,ourfaithdriesup.Irealizeitiseasytobeconsumedwithalltheactivitiesofsummer.Iknowitistemptingtotakethesummerofffromworshipandchurchactivities.However,comingtogetherinChristianworshipandfellowshipfeedsourwearysoulsandbreatheslifeintotheplacesinourlifethataredry.Ourchoirsmaytakesometimeofffromleadinginworship,buttheWordisstillproclaimed,andthesacramentsarestillprovided.Intheswirlofsummertimeactivity,IencourageyounottolosetrackofyourweeklyfaithnourishmenthereamongthefaithfulatFirst!

Here’sanupdateonthelatesthappeningsanddiscussionswithinFirstLutheranChurch.
AtourMAYmeeting,wediscussedandtookactiononthefollowing:
• WereviewedanddiscussedtheproposalfromthehiringcommitteetohireAdamEilers asthenewMaintenanceCoordinator.WeareexcitedtohavesomeonewithAdam’swork ethic,characterandskillsetonstaff.AdamwillstartinearlyJune.
• Weappointedataskforcetoreviewtheconstitutionandmakesuggestededits.Changes tothisdocumentwillbevotedonduringtheAnnualMeeting.
• Weapprovedtwoendowmentrequests.Onefor$3,500forequipmenttobeusedbythe archivingcommitteetohelpdocumentandstorehistoricaldata/elements.Thenwe approvedanotherrequestfor$5,000tobeusedtobuildanewrosegardeninthe area where the old bell tower used to be. This will beautify the southwest entrance areawhileeliminatingahazardousspotintheconcrete.
Wealsodiscussedandsharedinformationonthefollowing:
• Westartedestablishingideasforwaysyouthcanbemoreinvolvedinthecouncilprocess.
• Wediscussedideasforaddressingthelong-termneedsofthefacility.
• WebeganassemblingalistofagendaitemsfortheAnnualMeeting.
JunewillbeabusymonthonceagainforFirstLutheranChurch.WehopeyouallcanparticipateinupcomingeventsincludingtheBudgetForumonJune10that9:50am,theRedCrossblooddriveonJune22ndfrom12-6pm,andtheAnnualMeetingonJune24that9:50am.

A ministry for members to care for one another has begun again at First Lutheran Church! The ministry’s purpose is to provide a meal to members who have been in the hospital, had a new baby, lost a loved one, etc. Volunteers are needed to provide these meals. DebSchauerservedasMistressofCeremoniesandSharonLiljehorncoordinatedtableassignmentsandarrangedforthemusicalperformances.VivianandGrantLewiscontributedaviolinduetandMaleahandMarissaWright sangsolos.ArdithDavenport, a retiredNebraska teacher from Burwell, NE, presented the program aboutthehistoryofaprons.Shehascollectedapronsformanyyearsandwas able to describe the significant role of aprons using Biblicalreferences.Apronsareregardedasasymbolofwillingnesstoserve.This encourages us to be willing to serve our Lord.

Do We Take Prayer for Granted?SometimesItakeprayerforgrantedwhenIrecite“Come,LordJesus,beourguest,andletthesegiftstousbeblessed”asTomandIsitdowntoourmeals.WehaveaddedataglinetoourmealprayerinthelastfewyearsasourScottsbluffgrandchildrenlearnedtoadd“Andmaytherebeagoodlyshareoneverytableeverywhere.”Themorewehaveaddedthatphrase,themoreIappreciatethatI’mprayingforothersaswellasthoseinmyfamilyeachtimeIeatameal.ThischangeinaprayerI’vespokenformorethan60yearshelpsmethinkagainratherthantakemyprayerandmymealforgranted.

Mission OutreachThissummertheMissionOutreachteamissupportingtwoworthyprojects.Onewillreachoutgloballytoprovideclothingandcareitemsforyoungchildreninothercountrieswherethereisagreatneed.Theotherprojectwillreachouttochildreninoursurroundingarea,throughtheCarePortal.TheCarePortalisundertheCompassumbrella.CompasspartneredwithGlobalOrphanProjecttobringtheCarePortalasaninnovativeapproachtoempowerchurchesandindividualstoengageinthechildwelfaresysteminNebraska.TheCarePortalbringstheneedsofhurtingchildrenandfamiliesinourcommunitytoourattention.ChildWelfareworkerswhoareworkingtounitefamiliesorhelpingchildrenwhoareplacedinfostercare,becomeawareofneed.Previouslythechildwelfareworkerswouldreachouttolimitedprogramswhowouldbeabletomeetthatneed.NowbecauseoftheCarePortaltheseneedscanreachindividualsinourlocalchurches,whoareapartoftheCarePortalprogram.Thisgivestheneedtoalargercommunitywhocanhelpmeettheneed.Thefamilieswhorecievethesedonationsfeelsafe,protectedandthearmsofthechurchwrappedaroundthemastheytrytoheal.Someoftheneedsthathavebeenmetincludeabikeforchildinfostercare,acribforababywhohasoutgrowntheirswing,dressers.newtiresandgascardssofamilymemberscantraveltomeetwiththeirchildren,babyformula,andphonecards.Itmaybeassistancetohelpwithbillssothatfamilycanstayintheirhomesuchasutilitybillassistance,rentassistanceorcarpayments.Oneofthebiggestneedsisforbedsaschildrenwhohavebeeninabusivesituations,andneedtheirownbedtosleepin.FirstLutheranhasbeenanacitvepartnersincewejoinedtheCarePortal,butwecandomore.Membershavehelped16childrenand7requests.WewillhavecollectionboxesattheWelcomestationsbeginningMemorialDayweekenduntilLaborDayweekend.Thoughyourdonationswehopetohelpthosearehurting,andhelpthemputtheirlivesandtheirfamiliesbacktogetherandknowthatthechurchissupportingintheirefforts.Jesusmeetphysicalneedsandhehasaskedustodothesame.ThankyouhelpingthoselocallythroughtheCarePortalandgloballyaswecollectbabycareitemsforLutheranWorldRelief.

Hello First Lutheran Church!
Wow!Thatschoolyearflewbyevenfasterthisyear.Ilovedeveryminute!AfterEaster,welearnedaboutallthepartsofaninsect and how many legs they have. They made ants usingtheirfingerprintsanddrewtheantannasaswellasthe6legs.Thebutterfliescameoutandwereleased them in cold rainy weather.Next,wecelebratedourEarthandlearnedallthedifferentwayswecantakecareofit.Wesortedtrashbypaper,plastics,cardboard,glassandmetals.WepickeduptrashandplayedatDrydenPark.Thechildrenlearnedthatreusingisimportanttoo.Wealsoconservedenergyandwater.Theylovedthebook,“MichaelRecycle”. Thefollowingweek,wewerereviewingthelettersandnumbers.Measuringkidstoseehowmuch they grew. We made fun cards for their mom anddad,whentheirspecialdaycomes.Wemadeabookaboutthingstheylikeandareabletoreadit.Theclasshelpedillustratethebookandwewereimpressedhowwelltheydrewthemselves.Insidethebook,isalsoaquestionthatweaskedthekidsatthe beginning of the year. So it will be cute for their families to see how much they have changed! Thislastweekofpreschoolwelearnedaboutthefivesenses.Theyhadablastsmellingthingsandguessing what they were. The students tasted things blindfoldedandfeltthingswithoutlooking.Thentheylistened to cans and matched the cans by sound. Greetings from Pre-K
Asweclosethebookonourschoolyear,weopenanewchapterfortheupcomingone.Welookforwardtoournewplaygroundandanotherwonderful year at First Lutheran. ItwasagreatMayforallofusaswelearned all about summer safety and fun. We also reviewedallthatwelearnedoverthepastyear.On one day we wore our favorite hats and on anotherdayflip-flopstoclass. WewrappedupourfinalchapelwithPastorsRickandMichelleandalsoourlastbookmobilevisit. TheclasswenttoValentino’sforourendoftheyearfieldtrip/pizzaparty!Weweretreatedtoatourandyummypizza.Whatafuntimeitwasfor us. OnThursdayMay17ththeClassof2018graduated in front of many family and friends. Theclasspresentedashortprogramwithsongsfollowedbyreceivingtheirdiplomas.Weenjoyedcakeandfellowshipafterwards.Thankyoutoallwhoattendedandmadethisdaysospecial. Tanzania IwasdelightedwiththemessageyousentandIlovereadingyouremails.Theyareverydescriptivegivingaclearpictureofwhatishappeningoverthere.TheschoolyearstartedwellalthoughwehadsomechangesintheschoolBoard,thereweresomereformsthatwerenotexpected,Wearecopinggradually.Everythingisgettinginitstrackaccordingly.Thisyearwehave257students,slightlyless than the number last year. This year the government restricted the age and status of the students weenroll.SomestudentswhojoinourschoolhavestayedforsometimebeforeenrollingtoSecondaryschool.Thisreducestheirnumberaswehavetoinstructtheparentsseekpermissionfromthegovernmentwhichtheydonotreadilydo.FormsOneandTwoaredoingtheQuestLearningandFormThreehaveaspecialprogramcalled“ThinkingbyDesign”wheretheylearncreativeskillsandproblemsolvingtechniquesanditisveryusefulasweevaluate.Studentsenjoyandareverymuchinterestedtolearnintheseplatforms.Theydemonstratehighlevelsofconfidenceandcompetenceinwhattheylearnastheyownit.Teachersfindthisusefulasmuchmoretaskisdonebystudentsastheyplaymoreroleofamentorthanateacher.Asitisthecasewithyou,wewillhaveamid-yearvacationfrom1stJuneto2ndJulybutgradeXandXII(FormTwoandFour)willremaininschoolfortwoweeksforremedialteaching.Thiswastheparents’requestinameetingwedidlastmonth.IwasimpressedtohearaboutGlobalMissionSundayon20thMay.WhatdoyouintendtodisplayfromTanzania?Iwouldlovetohearorseeifourschoolisconsidered.Thankyouverymuchforkeepingusinyourconsiderationandprayers.Wealsoprayforyoursuccessineverythingyoudoaswell.
