JUNE 2019 NEWSLETTER Message from the Chairman I'm not one to brag but I must pass on compliments received recently at a training day for Chairman. The subject of websites came up, a few had looked at our website and were very complimentary in fact after seeing ours two U3A`s are in the process of changing from the 'boring' (their word) U3A "Web Builder" format to the format Dave uses for the Caer Urfa website. Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery well done Dave Johnson. GIFT AID As the Chairman (Tony) mentioned at the last meeting, we are going to claim back Gift Aid on the membership and weekly attendance fees subject to the completion of the necessary HMRC documentation. In order to simplify the procedure, the Committee agreed that we would obtain signed declarations at the next membership renewal, January 2020. At the meeting when membership renewals take place, someone will be there to assist with this and deal with any queries. Further information nearer the time. SCAM WATCH This month there have been a number of high-profile scams. Here are two to be aware of: - A TalkTalk customer received an email telling him his account had been blocked because of a ‘negative balance’. This seemed very strange and just as he was about to follow the link in the email the penny dropped, it was a scam. Fortunately, he phoned TalkTalk, on a phone number he already held, they confirmed a large number of customers had been in touch as they had been targeted. Scams similar to this have also involved PayPal, Amazon, HMRC and Banks to name but a few. Investment scams appearing to be endorsed by known celebrities. There have been a number of these, celebrities named without their knowledge have been: - Deborah Meaden, Dragon’s Den David Beckham Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert Please consider: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
