Continued from front page Sadie entered the event with Jeremy Balfour, MSP for Lothian, and impressed the judges with her loveable character and devotion to her owner and constituents.
The MSPs entering the competition campaigned hard, canvassing for votes from the public before meeting the expert judges to share their dog’s heroic deeds and acts of devotion. This year, the event focused on the negative impact that fireworks can have on dog welfare, and how both dog owners and non-dog owners can help.
Jeremy Balfour MSP said: “We’re delighted – it’s the third year I’ve taken part so it’s brilliant to win. It’s been a really fun day.”
The judging panel – Dogs Trust Veterinary Director, Paula Boyden and
Parliamentary Liaison Officer for Scottish Kennel Club, Richard Morrison – spent the morning with dogs from different political persuasions and ambitions.
Paula Boyden, said: “The competition this year was fierce, but Sadie and her owner Jeremy triumphed by making a strong impression, demonstrating their bond and commitment to improving dog welfare.”
Bill Lambert, Senior Health and Welfare Manager at the Kennel Club, added: “All the MSPs and their dogs were worthy winners and the
competition is a fantastic way to raise awareness of the issues affecting man’s best friend today.”
Second place was awarded to Dog’s Trust dog Georgie and Alison Johnstone MSP, with Monica Lennon MSP and her dog Cuillin in third place.

IMPORTED REGISTER BREEDS CLAIM OPEN SHOW TITLESTwo dogs have made history for their Imported Register breeds by claiming titles at open shows for the first time thanks to a recent change in show regulations which now allows such breeds to compete in group and BIS competitions.

ShCM, owned by Stuart Smith and Edward Wisniewski has the distinction of being the only Imported Register winner of the Show Certificate of Merit (ShCM) title.
“It has not been easy as all of Oscar’s points had to be from group placings”, said Stuart. “We are absolutely gobsmacked at how far this boy has come”.
With the ShCM award about to be discontinued, Stuart and Edward decided to use Oscar’s points to claim that title rather than go for the new Show Certificate of Excellence (ShCEx) award, which they hope to try for in future with Oscar.
The ShCM title was replaced at the beginning of 2019 by the ShCEx award and already an Imported Register breed has claimed this award – the French-bred Griffon Fauve de Bretagne, Melisent du Sentier des Caillottes ShCEx, owned by Paul Wyer.
“We are, understandably, delighted and very proud. As an Imported Register breed, this is the only UK title Melisent has been eligible for”, said Paul. “We are passionate about promoting our breed, and the Imported Register breeds in general, so this is a real opportunity to fly the Imported Breed Register flag.”

The exhibition runs at the Kennel Club Art Gallery.
Among the unique exhibits from the collection is an assortment of silverware, such as the Crufts Reserve Best in Show Trophy, a compilation of gifts and correspondence sent to the Kennel Club to celebrate its centenary in 1973 and a very distinctive embroidered cloth made in 1910, which features the signatures of the famous dog people of that time.
Also on show is a wooden bowl given as a prize for ‘the best team of setters, any variety’ by Spratt’s at Birmingham National, Britain's longest-established dog show,
in 1898. "I think it’s one of my favourites as it was donated by someone who rang me to say they found it in their shed!" said Kennel Club Art Collection Curator, Luisa Foster.
The collection also includes original oil paintings, drawings, Crufts cartoons, bronzes and porcelain figures featuring a
wide variety of breeds. The gallery is open to all and free

HIDDEN TREASURES ON SHOW IN MAYFAIRA first-of-its-kind exhibition, Hidden Treasures of the Kennel Club, showcasing the extensive collection of artworks and artefacts that have been collated by the Kennel Club throughout the years, has opened and reveals lesser-known relics and also provides visitors with the unique opportunity to see rare items that have never been on public display before.

More titles won at open shows
The first ever winner of the new Veteran Warrant (VW) title is the nine-year-old Newfoundland, Ch Zentaur Tee Tea Effen JW ShCM VW, belonging to Gary, Teresa, Faye and Elaine Coldwell. This award is open to all dogs aged seven years and over.
The first ever dog to be awarded the new Open Show Winner (OSW) title is the Bichon Frisé, OSW Manoir’s Mr Moonlight JW ShCM, owned by Claire Bayne and Marilyn Smith. This title is a special award given only to dogs which have won both the new-style Junior Warrant (JW) title and the ShCEx award.
The Kennel Club has also recently announced the first winner of the new-style JW award – it is the French Bulldog, Eastonite Maui JW ShCM, owned by Olivia Timms. A minimum of seven points must now be won at open shows instead of the previous three.
Last month, the first ever winner of the Show Certificate of Excellence (ShCEx) award was reported on. This title is one of a number of new awards which have been introduced by the Kennel Club at the start of 2019 among a series of measures designed to improve the open show scene.

At Crufts this year the Kennel Club Charitable Trust received a very generous donation of £10,000 from the Canine Alliance. Tony Taylor, Vice Chairman of the Canine Alliance, explained that the Canine Alliance was delighted to make such a significant presentation to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust with the intention that it should go towards dog health which is the aim of the Canine Alliance. Professor Steve Dean, Chairman of the KCCT responded that the Kennel Club Charitable Trust was very grateful to receive the donation from the Canine Alliance and said that the trustees would put the money to very good use in the furthering of health and welfare in dogs.

Farewell to Eileen The Kennel Club was
saddened to learn of the death of Eileen Ayling
after a short illness. Linda Dewey sent the Kennel Club a wonderful tribute to Eileen.
Eileen will be remembered as an ardent campaigner, winning the accolade of ‘KC campaigner of the year 2007’ for her work to promote the banning of electric shock collars, which was featured in several newspapers.
Eileen worked hard to get harsh handling of gundogs banned and particularly the use of electric and pronged collars on gundogs and all dogs, and whilst she was behind many changes for the good, sadly she did not get to see all these devices banned, though others have sworn to continue this work on her behalf.
In 2008, Eileen was also the oldest person to become
a Kennel Club Accredited Instructor in working gundogs and companion dogs at advanced level, no easy task, involving a lot of work, dedication and assessment.
Eileen had always loved dogs. Shortly after her marriage to Peter in 1954, she was given a terrier by a stable owner, which turned out to be rather a nasty dog. The stable owner offered to take the terrier back on the condition that Eileen would take a Labrador puppy in exchange – that was it, she was hooked on Labradors and gundogs from that day forward.
Eileen was never happier than when she had a litter of puppies to raise – she was in her element. Her Meadowmill Labradors were her first and last love and over the years she won many accolades in both showing and working and was a Kennel Club Assured Breeder.
At gundog training days in her classes, she was always supportive of others and helped many owners get the best from their dogs. She would often help retrain them and get them happily working and would scorn any harsh treatment of dogs or their owners.
Eileen will be remembered for always being generous with her time and expertise and has left quite a legacy of knowledge to the dog world. The Kennel Club sends its sympathy to her husband Peter as well as her family and friends.

The Disciplinary Committee reviewed the complaint by Mr Elia Vorrias, against Miss Claire Nolcini in respect of her conduct towards Mr Vorrias as the judge at the Ashford & Faversham District Canine Society Open show on 30 September 2018
Following her dog being placed second, Miss Nolcini made a disparaging remark in front of the judge, disputing his decision which seemed to infer that the dog had not been placed higher because of its colour by saying “don’t worry boy you can’t help being the wrong colour”.
Miss Nolcini then refused to place her dog in the line-up when requested by the judge to do so, snatched her place card and stormed out of the ring before the critique could be completed from where she continued to shout comments to the judge disputing his decision.
The Committee noted the following;
• The incident clearly occurred as confirmed by witnesses and the outburst was admitted by Miss Nolcini
• Miss Nolcini clearly disagreed with the judge’s decision and was vocal in expressing her disagreement
• Miss Nolcini did apologise to Ashford & Faversham District CS Open Show, but not the judge, and continued to maintain that the judge had a preference against particular colour (sable)
• Miss Nolcini also provided mitigation in terms of physical issues and was in some pain on the day
• Miss Nolcini is an approved Championship Show Judge
The Committee’s view was that in all the circumstances Miss Nolcini’s conduct was inappropriate, her attitude and behaviour had been unacceptable and it did constitute a breach of Regulation F3.
The Committee imposed the following penalties:
1 To warn her as to her future conduct
2 To censure her as to her future conduct
3 To impose a fine of £50.00

The Kennel Club is the largest organisation in the UK devoted to dog health, welfare and training, whose main objective is to ensure
that dogs live healthy, happy lives with responsible owners. As part of its External Affairs activities, the Kennel Club runs a dog owners group KC Dog which was established to monitor and keep dog owners up to date about dog related issues, such as Public
Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) being introduced across the country and public consultations on animal welfare.
Local authorities in England and Wales can use PSPOs, and in Northern Ireland DCOs to restrict where dog walkers can go with their dog and whether they can let their dogs off lead. For example, these restrictions may specify a particular park (or area within the park) where dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, or ban dogs from
a beach for specific times of the year. At present, there are no equivalent powers available to local authorities in Scotland.
As a general principle, we would like to highlight the importance that all PSPOs to be necessary and proportionate responses to problems caused by dogs and irresponsible owners. The Kennel Club Charitable Trust (KCCT) provides grants to various canine organisations nationwide, many of which are involved in the rescue and welfare of dogs. In 2017, the KCCT gave grants totalling nearly £675,000.
Your support is essential to us and by giving whatever you can afford, you can help make a difference for dogs.
The KCCT has three objectives, the funding of:
SCIENCE - Research into diseases and other health conditions for dogs
SUPPORT - The training of dogs to help humans
WELFARE - The rescue and re-homing of dogs which need help

RALLY & LISTED STATUS AGILITYThe fees for Rally & Listed Status Agility are both £60. Listed Agility also has an additional fee of 5p per dog over 1000 dogs (maximum £100).
