How is the Holy Spirit equipping us? How do we think about Pentecost this year? The day of Pentecost has been remem-bered in Christi-anity as the com-
ing of the promised Holy Spirit and it sig-naled the birth of the Church. Just when the disciples patiently waited for some-thing to happen, it did happen but not exactly as they might have expected. The Holy Spirit came with power to equip people to proclaim the truth of Jesus as God’s Son and as the victorious Lord of all. The Holy Spirit gave voice to people through their hearing the testimony in the native tongues. Jesus was glorified by returning to the Father, but he was glori-fied also by the testimony of the disciples who likewise gave glory to God the Fa-ther and the Son. We might not understand how the Holy Spirit is equipping us, but it has and will enable us to do God’s work especially in our troublesome year with the corona-virus pandemic aka COVID-19. Whenev-er we think about others we can be ves-sels of the church. Whenever we be-come aware of the needs of others, those thoughts can lead us to be God’s hands and feet. Whenever our wants compete with the needs of others God can prompt us through the Holy Spirit to see those opportunities to help as holy. I struggle, just as you do, with how to respond to our current chaos. Should we wear a mask or not and when? How of-ten should we wash hands, how much to clean, and how long do we wait to hold in-person church services. How long do we avoid gatherings to follow CDC guide-lines? First, I feel blessed by our commu-nity and it’s awareness of the health risks posed by the pandemic. I am confident that we’ll listen to the Holy Spirit and trust that we’ll find faithful ways to worship God. Yes, in the past it sounded good to want full pews of worshipers, but now health concerns require different ap-proaches. Second, at St. Olaf we have been hoping to resume in-person wor-ship services and we had suggested possibly early June. But our process is to use a team of capable members to re-view the CDC guidelines and minimize the spread of the pandemic. We grieve the loss of people from from it across our State of North Dakota and the Nation, and take note of deaths in nearby Minne-sota. Please know that I regularly speak with colleagues of other ELCA Lutheran
churches who are asking the same ques-tions. When our U.S. President, Donald Trump, recently urged churches to re-sume in-person worship, we heard it, but we believe that being mindful of your health and safety is also holy and the work of the Holy Spirit. Our Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has responded by emphasizing our call to be diligent in being good stewards of God’s gift of life. Third, please know that I want our con-gregation to persist and thrive, especially in worship, but not at the expense of our member’s safety. Being and living holy lives is a bunch of things, and worship and praising God is many things, but living in a pandemic also means listening to the CDC for the care of us as God’s creation. We can praise God by being holy through being mindful of following healthy living practices. Please hear me say that our current livestream worship on Facebook and our regular radio broadcast will continue as we strive to assess the future. Pentecost means celebrating the birth of the Church of Jesus Christ, and means to continue to share the love of Christ in the world. It means to do Christ’s work until Christ returns in his fullness, but in the meantime we make Christ present through our own faithful and holy service. Our faithful service is an act of steward-ship. How do we care for us and others when a contagious disease can threaten our existence as well as our economic sustainability? Friends, we’ll re-open our sanctuary for worship once we can be sure you, and I, and others can be to-gether and not unreasonably at risk. Just as the promised Holy Spirit guided the testimony of Jesus to be heard then, so shall it guide us to use all available re-sources to be the church in all possible circumstances. We give thanks for our members who have and continue to serve us in the medical field, and for the Holy Spirit working in their calls. Just as the Holy Spirit calls, equips, gathers, sustains, and sends each of us out into the world through our baptism, so can we trust that the Holy Spirit continues to guide us in economically and health con-cerning times. St. Olaf is continuing to prosper through the generosity and mindfulness of our members, and my prayer is that God can give us peace of mind and creative ideas for safely offer-ing worship. I don’t know the path for-ward, but the disciples didn’t know also, take heart that faith led them and faith will lead us through the challenges of this time.

The council met Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at noon on Zoom. Present: Mike Boehmer, Dale Giedd, Marisa Smith, Daria Mil-ler, Brian Quam, Crystal Ever-svik, Pastor Jim, Cindy Brown, Kitty Overbo and Evan Markestad. Not present: Dona Krahler, Sherry Boehmer and Jeri Steffan. Mike made a motion to approve the minutes from the April meeting. Daria 2nd the motion. Motion carried. Treasurer’s Report: Mike re-ported the balances in the Gen-eral Fund, Designated Funds and Building Fund as of April 30th were: General—$30,024.64, Designated—$91,051.95 and Building—$49,867.78. He also reported that our budgeted commitment to the EaND Synod— 2% of the envelope giving each month — has been paid. Reports from Pastor Jim and Marisa Smith were reviewed. Christian Ed. Board met May 5th through Zoom. Cindy re-ported some changes since their meeting: St. Olaf’s 7th graders will not be going to Red Willow Bible Camp this sum-mer; they cancelled camps due to COVID19. Marisa will work with Pastor Jim about 5th & 6th grade students about acolyte training and acolyte in church. Brian is working on ideas for fund-raisers for the youth that are outside the box. Graduation celebration is planned for May 17th in the east parking lot. The congregation will be invited to drive through in celebration of the graduates. Church properties: Dale report-ed that the gate at the Retreat Center has been repaired and another gate by the deck was
installed. At St. Olaf, the men’s bathroom has been painted and the stalls updated. Dale will look into sanitation practices for when the church is opened. Youth and Family: Board met May 4 via Zoom. 22 Easter bags were picked up, popcorn/candy bags—12 people picked up. Youth Gathering—3 people sign-up. Fund-raising ideas: ditch cleaning & parking lot BINGO. Discussed virtual lock in. May 17th—Faith in Action Sunday: Rachel Quam donated suncatchers and kids will deco-rate them and drop off at nurs-ing homes as part of Faith in Action Day. Unfinished business: Daria asked if we were continuing the live stream broadcast of our worship service when we open up and Pastor Jim confirmed that we would. The Notify Plus Services from NDTC—where calls, texts and emails will be used to notify our congregation—Darci has been inputting the contact infor-mation. New Business: Discussion about opening the church was held. The Synod has resources for strategies needed. A task force will be formed to create the strategies needed at St. Olaf. A motion was made to continue live-stream and radio broadcasts only— through end of June. Jim W. 2nd, motion carried. Next council meeting planned for June 12 at noon through Zoom. Memorials May Council Meeting Minutes
Elle will be attending Northland College in Ashland Wisconsin, on Lake Superior, this fall. She will be studying biology to pursue a ca-reer in veterinarian medicine. Elle will also be playing for the North-land’s Women’s College hockey team.
Hi, my name's Olivia Allery and I'm excited to be apart of the graduating class of 2020! I'm hap-py and proud of what I've learned through out my years in high school. I will carry with me the things I've learned and the fun memories I have made at St. Olaf; all the fun church trips, lock in's, and amazing races. Being apart of St. Olaf has allowed me to grow in my faith, from the time I was just starting Sunday School all the way up to now, my graduation from high school. It hasn't been a traditional last few months, however I've still been able to come out strong and be in a good place with every-thing. I plan on continuing my ed-ucation and career goals at Augs-burg University where I'll major in Social Work and become a Child Welfare worker.
Quenten will be attending Bis-
marck State University in the fall
and majoring in agronomy.
Grace is the daughter of Brian and Rachel Quam. She has been a dancer for 15 years at Miki's School of Dance and been in-volved with 4-H since 2010. She was a member of DLHS Choir 4 years, SADD 1 year, Honor Society 3 years, Environmentalist Club 1 year, Drama 1 year. She will be attending the University of Jame-stown in the fall.
Calli Jo Forsberg is graduating from Shattuck St. Mary’s in Fari-bault, MN on May 22nd, 2020. She will be attending Bemidji State University in the fall to play Divi-sion I hockey and pursue a career in Business.
Jack lives in Devils Lake with his parents Mike and Tina Kuntz. He has an older sister Mallory and a golden retriever Molly. Jack has been involved in sports through-out his school career. He has been a member of the Basketball, Track, Wrestling and Football teams. In his spare time, Jack en-joys hunting, snowmobiling, lift-ing weights, and cooking steak. Jack plans to be a chiropractor and will be attending the Univer-sity of North Dakota in the fall majoring in Biology. He will also play Football for the Fighting Hawks football team.
Rachel is the daughter of Roger
and Michelle Fritz and has an
older Brother, Greg. She is a 5th
generation member of St Olaf.
Her extracurricular activities

Shooting Sports and play clarinet

big part of Rachel’s life and one
of her most memorable events is
attending the ELCA Youth Gath-
ering in Houston, Texas and train
trip to Montana with fellow St
Olaf Youth. Rachel will be
attending Lake Region State Col-
lege in the fall.
I have been accepted into NDSU and will be heading there this fall. I hope everything is a little bit more normal And tamed down in Au-gust. My plans right now are to earn my bachelor's of science de-gree majoring in Radiologic Scienc-es. I will be living in one of the high rise dorms.
I will be attending LRSC to get my prerequisites done this fall of 2020. And then I will we heading to NDSCS is Wahpeton, ND for 2 years to become a dental hygien-ist and then come back to Devils Lake to perform my hard work at Smile Quest.
Austin graduating with a 3.9 GPA. He was honored to receive Offen-sive MVP & 2nd All State team in football & MVP in hockey. Austin is attending UND next Fall for Business Management .
I have enlisted with the ND Na-tional Guard and will be leaving for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri the end of June.
Breydin Ehnert is a member of the North Dakota National Guard. He completed basic training last sum-mer at Fort Benning in Georgia. In June he will start his AIT training. In the fall he plans to attend NDSCS in Wahpeton to study welding.
I am a senior in the class of 2020 throughout high-school i have been involved in orchestra, trap-shooting and 4H. I will be attend-ing the United States Military Academy at West Point this sum-mer and for the next four years while pursuing a degree in Me-chanical Engineering. After gradu-ating and commissioning I will serve five years as an officer in the Army.
