Dear Friends,

As I write, we are celebrating

Pentecost, or, as many of us used

to know it, Whitsuntide. Some-

times referred to as the birthday

of the church, it is the time when

the apostles were given the Holy Spirit in tongues

of fire. When I have preached at a family service

on Pentecost, a birthday cake

was always a good illustration.

By the time you read this, I hope

that St Ambrose will have our

own birthday celebration… a

new year of our own, probably

as in the good tradition, with

lots of cake! (Editor: Jean is referring here to the ap-

pointment of our new vicar, and the celebration of a

new start following the licensing etc.)

Please remember in your prayers all those who

have been working so hard to achieve this new

chapter in the life of St Ambrose.

The Search for a new Incumbent

On Ascension Day, Thursday May 13th, 3 very strong candi-

dates were interviewed by the panel (Bishop Philip, the Arch-

deacon, the Patron, Area Dean and 2 lay representatives from

our church (Janet Singleton and Ollie Woodcock) Each candi-

date preached a short sermon/homily based on the reading

for the day, which was Acts 1: 1-11.

This was followed by 12 questions asked by different mem-

bers of the panel. As you might expect, these covered areas

such as prayer and spirituality, vocation, evangelism , theolo-

gy and discipleship. Other questions focused on their under-

standing of safeguarding, how they deal with conflict, grow

church leaders and make decisions about giving, both per-

sonally and as a church. Attracting, working with and en-

couraging children, young people and their families was also

a key focus question.

Following the interviews, the panel met to deliberate, discuss-

ing each candidate in depth to consider who would best ‘fit’

our parish and guide/lead us into the post-Covid future. The

final decision was made on the Sunday.

THE SEARCH IS OVER!

We are pleased to announce that Revd Paul Robinson has

been appointed to be the next Vicar of St Ambrose Church.

Paul is currently the vicar of St Anne’s Shandon in Cork. Pri-

or to that he was Rector of the United Benefices of St Cuth-

bert and St Thomas Halsall, Lydiate and Downholland in the

Diocese of Liverpool for many years.

We look forward to Paul’s arrival in our parish.

The Children’s Society HELP NEEDED!

We need someone to take over the task of collecting and open-ing of the Children‘s Society boxes. This only happens once a

year, usually in January. It is important that this contribution continues as the Society

does invaluable work supporting young people. Unfortunately if we do not get a volunteer the donations from St

Ambrose will have to stop. If you can help please ring:

St Ambrose Brownies

The Brownie leaders have been doing a super job throughout the lockdowns. Here is a message from their leaders, Diane, Debbie and Margaret, provided by Margaret.

Just an update about Brownies: We have been doing zoom meetings for just over a year now ! We are meeting now outside until 4th May when we will return to indoor meetings!!! All risk assessments are done and covid care is in place. We have done lots of things on Zoom : baking, quizzes, scavenger hunts badges. For Mother’s Day we invited mums on and had a lady doing laughing yoga !! We are very pleased to have gained brownies in our unit during this difficult time. Not all came on zoom but we tried to drop activities off for them quite a few times , to enable us to keep in touch. Happy to get back to the new normal !!! Diane, Debbie, Margaret

What do we Know about

Corpus Christi?

This year, Corpus Christi falls

on June 3rd. It always falls on

the Thursday after Trinity

Sunday.

Although mainly considered to be a Roman Catholic liturgical event, it is

recognised and marked in Anglican and Western Orthodox churches.

Correctly known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of

Christ, Anglican churches are most likely to name and observe it as the

‘Thanksgiving for the Holy Communion. Originally it celebrated the ‘Real

Presence of the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ in the

elements of the Eucharist’.

The event was suppressed in protestant churches during the Reformation

and abolished by the Church of England in 1548. It was however, re-

introduced later.

In many, mainly Catholic countries, such as Austria, Portugal and Brazil,

Corpus Christi is marked as a Public Holiday.

Thank you to Ollie for showing some of the Easter flowers in the May mag-

azine.

Let's hope we are able to continue with our rota throughout this year. I'm

assuming the members of our congregation wish to continue with their me-

morial dates as in former years but will be in contact before next year's list is

compiled.

Last year £725 was generously contributed and £430-90 was spent on flow-

ers and a Christmas tree for the font. About 65% of the donations were able

to be Gift Aided for general church funds.

Thank you for donations received so far this year.

Please could cheque donations be made out to St. Ambrose Flower Fund.

Many thanks.

The severe restrictions on our lives and movements are gradually

being released. BUT, we still need to be vigilant, wear face cover-

ings over mouths & noses, keep to social distancing rules and fol-

low the safety guidelines when coming to and leaving church.

A few more ‘family seats’ and couples chairs are being provided in

church. If you are alone, please choose a single seat.

Thank you for your patience and co-operation!

Our Poem for this month was written by Brian H. Gent

Chosen by Mary Carr

Here once more stretched out before us

Awaits another morning chorus.

Throush and blackbird will combine

To sing their notes, pure and divine.

As sparrows twitter and martins dart,

What a way for a day to start.

Then, suddenly a little lark rises,

Another one of those surprises.

Then, to complete their master class,

Nature puts a sheen on grass.

How does the church grass stay tidy? Fortnightly cutting of the church grass will start on Wednesday 14th April. We only have a small team and would be very grate-ful if some more volunteers would come forward. You would not have to come on every occasion but any extra help would be appreciated. We meet at about 9am on alternate Wednes-days and the job takes about 2 hours. Please contact Ian on 01772 497135 or 07884280043, or [email protected]
