1 THURSDAY 21st JUNE 2018 Dear Families, In the last week we have had a range of things happening here at school, last Friday we had the Girls AFL down at Bonbeach, we played in 5 games winning 2 of them and losing one by just a point. The girls had a great day and proudly represented St. John Vianney’s. Special thanks to the parents who helped with transporting and a very special thank- you to Brett Leighton who umpired all of the games. Tomorrow all students from years 5&6 will be participating in the District Gala Day for football, soccer, netball and teeball, let’s hope they have a great day. On the sporting theme we had a “friendly” last Friday with St. Patrick’s as our final preparation for tomorrow’s Gala Day. This week our Year 5 & 6 students have been at the Arrabri adventure camp in Warburton. Although the weather was cold we had no complaints and everyone was kept warm via the activities that they were involved in. Thank- you to Kerry Slater, Liz Heath, Genevieve Fikaris, Julie Glen and Lyn Saunders for the time and preparation that went into the camp and the excellent level of supervision that they provided throughout the camp. School camps are wonderful experiences for the children both physically and socially but they are also extremely demanding for the staff and I am very grateful that we have staff who are so willing to give so much of their time to provide another dimension to our children’s school program. There are a range of camp photos on our facebook page. Reports & Interviews All student reports will be sent home with your child tomorrow, 22 nd June. Next Tuesday and Thursday we will be conducting Parent-Teacher Interviews where you and the teacher can discuss your child’s performance and progress. At the Interviews you will also be given your child’s Portfolio so that you can see examples of what they have been doing in class. Don’t forget to log on and organise your interview times if you haven’t done so already (about 90% of families have completed this already) School Video Next Monday we have videographer Lawrence Phelan coming to school to complete a school video which will eventually be available on our Facebook and website pages. Lawrence will be videoing in a range of rooms. Could you please ensure that all children are wearing their full winter uniform. Keyboard Concerts For those families involved in Keyboard lessons with Isaac there are concerts next week- 2:30pm in the MPR for the keyboarders from Years 3-6 and Tuesday at 9:30am in the Atrium for the Year 1/2’s, parents are most welcome. Chess Tournament

We have a very strong Chess culture here at St.John Vianney’s and as such we will be conducting a Chess Tournament from 9:00-2:00pm in our MPR. This tournament helps our students to prepare for the Primary School Championships later in the year. Thank-you to Helen Tancheff for organising this event.

STEAM

I hope you have noticed the wonderful artwork that is developing on our fence to promote our STEAM program. Special thanks to Gabbi Davoren for developing this feature. Whilst on the STEAM theme you will have noticed the pergola structure that has been added to the phys- ed storeroom, this area will be where we will put the pizza oven and hooded BBQ which are further developments for our STEAM program.

Robotics

Following a $3000 allocation from the PFA we have purchased a number of Robotics kits and 2 Drones which we will begin to use with interested students next term, this will be most exciting- watch out for drones overhead, they have a camera.

What’s next

Early next term we want to look at how we can refurbish our Fairy Garden, introduce a Ropes Course into our active recreation activities and start on our planting for our Bamboo Garden trail. Keep your eye out for some new art around the bike shed area.

A Special Assembly

Next Wednesday at 9:00am we are having a special whole school assembly in the multi-purpose room. The title of this assembly is the “Common Good” in which all classes have put together some visual images as a response to Pope Francis’ letter to all communities about taking care of God’s Creation. Parents are most welcome to attend.

Shining our Light

This week’s “Shining our Light” piece of work comes from Kiara and Victoria, 2 of our Dolphin Research Ambassadors, enjoy finding out what our ambassadors do.

Fr Michael’s 50th Jubilee

We would like to extend an invitation to the school communities of St Pat’s and St John Vianney’s, to help us celebrate the 50th Jubilee of Fr M McEntee. The Celebrations on the 15th of July will begin with Mass at 1100 and then continue with a reception in the St Pats School Hall. There will be Drinks and Hot finger food provided. All are welcome to bring either a plate of sandwiches or a plate of sweets. For catering purposes please fill out the form in the parish bulletin or call the office prior to the 9th July.

Millie is from our Prep class and this is her families first year at SJV.

Millie likes Prep, the best thing is colouring in, the worst thing is going outside when it’s cold and raining. Sasha is Milly’s buddy. Sasha is a good buddy when she helps Milly in the classroom. Milly can’t wait until she is in Grade 6 so she can do Assembly . Milly thinks the trip to Werribee Zoo has been the most fun thing this year. Milly’s favourite time at school is when she is listening to her teachers, they are both lovely. The biggest difference between kinder and school is the monkey bars. Milly loves sport with Mrs Heath and likes doing gymnastics, she thinks that’s pretty easy. Milly would like to be a teacher when she grows up.

When Milly is at home she likes to draw and play with Lego. Milly does swimming lessons and barracks for Collingwood. Milly loves getting special treats at home like chocolate and lollypops. Milly’s mum cooks great pasta with cheese, dad doesn’t cook anything. Dad is just good at giving treats. On the holidays Milly is getting a special surprise, we can’t wait to hear all about it ! The one thing Milly would like everyone to know about her is that she would like to be your friend.

DRI Report

On the 5th of June, 4 students participated in the DRI (Dolphin Research Institute) program. Victoria, Trent, Cohen and Kiara were representing S.J.V at the D.R.I workshop. First, it was a trip in Mr. Regan’s car to the first part of the workshop. This part was at Dandenong Flood Plains. There were 3 parts of this- Micro-organism identification, Water Testing and Waterways Pollution. The first activity was Micro-organism Identification. We had rope connected to a bucket and we put it in the water, so tiny animals would crawl or swim in it. We identified a water mite, it sped around the bucket. The second activity was water testing. We had to test the levels of Oxygen, Phosphate, Turbidity and PH, we also had to test the temperature. The water was highly polluted so they have to regularly monitor it. The last activity in Dandenong was examining the pollution in the waterways leading up to the Dandenong Creek. They brought in people that work with picking up pollution. They picked up heaps and heaps of pollution from the creek and that was only less than a tenth of the rubbish around the creek! After our lunch break we went down to the Mordialloc beach where we cleaned up rubbish on the foreshore and the boys- Trent & Cohen participated in a rubbish sampling activity. We also examined the rubbish trap in the Mordialloc Creek Our next DRI activity is planned for Term 3 and we will be completing Foreshore Conservation. By Kiara McGaw & Victoria Kladis
