On June 26, Carmel resident Jeff Graves is giving everyone a good rea-son to get muddy with the Mudathlon.

Mudathlon is a series of mud-based obstacles, and the whole event is de-scribed as “a mucking good time.” The four-mile course is made up of 30-foot mudslides, mud pits and cargo nets. The Mudathlon is challenging, but the goal is to be dirty. The course ends with a beer and some live music for every newly crowned “Mudathlete” on the course.

Graves ran the course at White River Paintball in Anderson as it was completed. At the 30-foot natural mudslide, Graves had to ask himself what he was getting himself into.

“The mud at the bottom was suck-ing the shoes right off my feet,” he said. “When they tell you to tighten your shoes at the beginning, they mean it.”

Graves sees the Mudathlon as some-thing different for running enthusiasts. Most of the events are held outside of the state. There have been 10 Muda-thlons in the Midwest.

“We are hoping to have future Mu-dathlons in Indiana so that everyone doesn’t need to travel as much,” Graves said.

The course at White River Paintball in Anderson is focused on fun and if someone doesn’t want to attempt the obstacle they just continue on past it.

Starting in waves each group will be spread out so everyone has enough time to enjoy the mess. Setting up the course was the toughest part for Graves.

“It’s not like setting up a marathon on the street,” he said. “We try to in-corporate the natural surroundings of every course we come up with.”

A month before this year’s event, the Indianapolis-area Mudathlon already had more than 600 registrants, and that number has kept growing.

“The whole thing has turned out to be bigger than I envisioned,” Graves said.

Beginning this week, 126th Street will be closed to through traffic from Towne Road to Shelborne Road. Detour signs will direct traffic to 131st Street. This project is expected to be completed by mid-October.

Hazel Dell Parkway: 131st Street to Cherry Creek Boulevard

On or after June 28, the intersection of Cherry Creek Boulevard and Hazel Dell Parkway will be closed for roundabout construction for approximately 45 days.

This closure is not scheduled to occur until Keystone

Parkway from 126th Street to 136th Street has been re-opened to through traffic. Keystone Parkway is ex-pected to re-open on Saturday.

Hazel Dell Parkway: roundabout enhancements and resurfacing

Road work is scheduled to take place on or after July 1 and continue to mid-September for safety enhance-ments to the existing roundabouts at 126th Street and Hazel Dell Parkway, and 131st Street and Hazel Dell Parkway. Drivers can anticipate lane restrictions during that time, but at this time the city does not anticipate closures.

Marnin Spigelman says he’s running against Mayor Jim Brainard to get a handle on some issues he claims are on the verge of becoming “out of control.”

Spigelman announced last week that he will compete with Brainard for the Republican nomination in the May 2011 primary elec-tion. A vocal critic of Carmel’s four-term mayor, Spigel-man lost to Brainard in the November 2007 election, when he ran as an independent because he wanted to avoid taking votes from Brainard’s competitor in that year’s primary. This time, he’s getting involved earlier and claims he’ll provide a more fiscally conservative

style of leadership if elected.“A lot of the warnings I gave during the last cam-

paign have come true,” he said. “At this point, the fi-nancial situation in Camel is dubious, indeed.”

On his Web site, www.spigelman4carmelmayor.com, Spigelman says Brainard has “accomplished several posi-tive directions for Carmel” but adds that the mayor’s decisions during the last six years “calls for new leader-ship to be installed to fend off a potential fiscal crisis.” He said the city’s large construction endeavors and resulting debt are a major concern of his, and he added that he fears continued heavy spending will result in increased taxes.

“I’m running again to solve the problems before they get out of control,” he said.

It is our position that Exit 10 off I-69 is in demand of a filling station. With the boom of housing and commerce Hamilton Towne Center and Verizon Wireless Music Center have brought to Noblesville, citizens can find anything they might possibly need – that is, except a place to get gas.

A trendy setting full of business suites and shops, Exit 10 has quickly earned potential to be one of the more popular stops for motorists com-muting north and south along I-69. With a variety of attractions available to travelers right off the exit, an upper-end establishment to fill up the car would fit comfortably into the scenery while providing for a huge demand to the hundreds of shoppers and employees visiting the area every day.

With all the steps that have been taken to make Exit 10 the place consumers look forward to visiting, a fuel station would assist more in the effort by attracting those who are just looking for a place to fill up. With gas stations along 90 percent of the undeveloped exits in the country, a place to fuel up at Exit 10 would be convenient and keep the tax dollars at home.

Got gas? Slow death or fastIt is our position that the recent move by Gov.

Mitch Daniels and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to again delay the long-promised and much-postponed improvements on U.S. 31 across Hamilton County is as much as killing the project. Promised more than a decade ago, plans to improve the stretch of highway to limited-access comes not only from its impor-tant economic position but also from the loss of life claimed by overtaxed and under-designed intersections along the route.

Speed, volume and design have all been taken into account through several studies, designs and redesigns over the past several years. And INDOT has promised action with each one. Yet other than keeping those folks employed, very little action has occurred. It is time for political lead-ers to live up to their promises. Daniels and his administration committed that this project would be well underway in 2011. If he cannot get the job done, both Carmel and Westfield have joined in offering to take over the project and do the work directly. The state should let them.

Recently, there has been much comment about the grand opening of the long-awaited Palladium: pro for the fantastic building and an-ticipated performers and con for the additional $2 million the City Council was asked to pay when the Carmel Redevelopment Commission was told that it was not legally able to do so.

Like any unexpected bill that we all might receive, it had to be paid. Remember that Visa bill from your college freshman year, the one on the card to be used only for emergencies?

What must we do? We take money out of our savings account and pay the bill and then reduce spending to replenish the account.

Well, in municipal finance, the Rainy Day Fund is the savings account. In 2002, or “two councils ago,” councilor John Koven proposed that the council take advantage of the state Legislature’s permission to create a Rainy Day Fund. We all agreed and funded it with $500,000. By the time we left office, the balance was $1.3 million.

When the next council came in, it needed

that money to pay for a lawsuit. That’s exactly why the account was created. However, during the subsequent four years, it did not replenish the money used and at the end of 2007, the bal-ance in the city’s savings account was $6,335.

When the current council took office in 2008, Clerk Treasurer Diana Cordray and I began to put money back in the fund as special distributions or other non-designated money was received and, at the end of 2009, the bal-ance in the Rainy Day Fund was $4.1 million. With an additional county option income tax distribution in January, the balance was more than $7 million.

Thank goodness we had that money when that $2 million bill came due, because the issue is not that you use your savings, the issue is that you must replenish it.

very well could re-open in time for Fourth of July activities. The city’s engineer’s office said it all depends on weather and other factors, but if the planets are aligned the portion of the parkway be-tween East 126th Street and East Main Street could reopen as soon as Saturday. What a blessing that would be for the fes-tival – especially for post-fireworks traffic flow on July 5. The opening otherwise will help relieve traffic congestion on Range Line Road and other thoroughfares, which will be welcomed. Short-term pain for long-term gain.

•A couple, whose identities were unknown at press time, are scheduled to be married at 5:15 p.m. on July 4 on the south side of the fountain at Civic Square. CarmelFest has a fairly decent reputation for creat-ing lasting relationships. Volunteers Alice Bryan and Chuck Howe, for example, met at the festival and now are married. We wish the next happy couple the best.

•The Blue Moon Café, at the south end of the dazzling Indiana Design Center, has opened its doors for business. It’s wonder-ful to have another eatery in the Arts &

Design District, and it’s just as wonderful that Blue Moon has extended the oppor-tunity for CarmelFest attendees to park in its lot during the event. Remember, too, that the underground garage at IDC is available, and neither site has a charge for parking.

•Organizers of the Carmel Rotary Freedom Ball, scheduled for Saturday at the Ritz Charles, are anticipating visits from a couple former presidents. You read it here first: George Washington and Thomas Jef-ferson are to be in attendance. We won’t blow their cover, but the two gents who are going to portray the historic figures are, indeed, good sports.

Keystone could re-open this Saturday COMMentarYBy terry anker

How do we have a thoughtful conversation about race in this fine country? And who has standing to discuss the issue? Many years ago (in fact, many, many), I was enjoying a seminar in law school (now the Michael Maurer School of Law – thank you Jane & Mickey) on the topic of race and the law.

It was taught by our Constitutional law pro-fessor, himself a black American. A member of the class asserted that only whites could be racist. The view was that racism suggested the perceived superiority of that particular race over all others. The facts (that many whites did not participate in slavery, were from countries that never participated in it, and that many Africans of all races have owned slaves for centuries) were not relevant, because the argument presupposed that racism was not a product of slavery but rather that slavery was a product of racism.

The debate that ensued was one of the most interesting I recall from my years at the study

of law. Sadly, the discourse was not a free one. Prejudices based largely in appearance meant that a comment from one would be severely discounted and a remark from another would be dismissed in wholesale.

If these thinking, young, and engaged folks were unable to find common ground even in the law, how will we find it today? President Obama suggests we talk it out over beer. Oth-ers believe race will become irrelevant through implementation of forced ideals of social jus-tice. I certainly don’t have the answer. And I know that the space allotted barely gets to the point. Isn’t it best if we look to our own hearts to determine how we will be labeled? And then let others think what they want? Aren’t they going to anyway?

I wanted to share with you the weight-loss plan some friends of mine organized for this summer. They were sitting around a picnic table over Memorial Day Weekend, eating brats and burg-ers, and they got to talking about how they all wanted to get in better shape. So they decided to hold their own “Biggest Loser” competition. I figured a lot of you are in the same boat and could maybe benefit from their idea. Here’s the deal:

Each participant has agreed to ante $300, to be reimbursed only if his or her weight loss goal is reached. They have three months to shed the lard, beginning June 1 and ending Labor Day, with weigh-ins only twice, bookending the summer. Their goals range from 10 to 30 pounds, depending on the amount of fatness presently on their bodies. Whoever attains her weight loss goal gets to split the forfeited loot of those who did not.

That’s it! But when you think about it, the plan in brilliant. Had I needed to drop a few pounds, this would have totally mo-tivated me. But alas, I was gifted with the skinny-minny genes of my mom (who is actually shrinking as the years go by – her wed-ding dress from 40 years ago still fits!) and an incurable disease that requires stimulant medication (hypothyroidism gets you the benefits of Synthroid, a metabolic booster). And not to sell my-self short, I work out regularly and eat OK already. But for most of my friends, this will be a challenge to not only lose weight but to make the change to a healthier lifestyle. And I honestly think they all have a shot at succeeding. Why?

First off, summer is the perfect time. The days are longer, so squeezing in walks and runs are much easier, and because there is no threat of ice or snow, most days are doable. Plus, something about the sun compels you to get outside and do something. You

almost feel guilty watching TV and chowing down a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey (which I did the other day in a mo-mentary state of depression. Soooo good.) Furthermore, grocery stores and markets are flooded with local fresh produce, making the choice to eat healthier more realistic and economical. Finally, bathing suits and arm-baring tees offer their own special kind of incentive for shedding the gristle – the not-so-popular, but highly effective embarrassment factor. We all want to look good in skimpy clothing!

To accommodate everyone’s busy lives, there are no group activities scheduled, and each participant can design their own weight-loss plan. One of my friends is doing P90X, a DVD pro-gram that combines aerobics, weight training, and diet to achieve results in ninety days. His goal is 20 pounds. Another is simply trying to walk five times a week and not eat seconds. She also wants to lose 20 pounds. Two older “Biggest Loser” competitors will attempt to shed those pain-in-the-arse last 10 pounds by cut-ting back on fatty foods and increasing daily activity.

They are all motivated to stick to their guns for two reasons: No one wants to lose the cash, and more importantly, no one wants to be the only one not meeting his goal. They are account-able to themselves, to their spouses and children, and to each other. So I applaud their efforts. Even if they don’t succeed, they will have taken the first few steps to becoming healthier. Good luck, Biggest Losers, and to all of you trying to improve your-selves this summer! Peace out.

Measures are being taken to ensure that a new gas station in Carmel does not repeat the history of its predecessor at the same site.

Construction will begin in the next two weeks for a new Shell station at the site of a former Marathon station on the corner of W. Main Street and Guilford Road. The previous station suffered a gas leak in 2008, and 8,000 gallons of gasoline were leaked into the soil surrounding the station. Surrounding busi-nesses lost customers, some suffering so badly they had to close temporarily.

However, one nearby business owner is not concerned this time around. John Mikesell, owner of Izzy’s Place – A Dog Bakery, said he believes the spill in 2008 was taken care of and adds the new business will be good for the area.

“They did a good job of cleaning out,” Mikesell said. “I think we need a little market and a gas station here.”

A failed flange seal caused the leak and was not uncovered until a significant amount of gas had been released in the ground, said Jim Koch, director of real estate for Tharp Invest-ments, Inc., the company leasing the site. The

fueling system was removed following the incident and a large portion of the parking lot for the shopping center was shoveled up to uncover the spoiled soil. The soil was removed and replaced, and the area was then repaved.

“The owner of the property, the new fuel jobber and the new operator are committed to insuring this cannot and does not happen again,” Koch said in an e-mail.

Extensive changes will be made to the in-frastructure of the station this time around, Koch said.

A new modern self-contained, self-testing system is going to be installed with the new Shell station. A double-walled fiberglass stor-age tank will exist, creating space between two walls that will monitor the gas, detecting minor leaks before they become serious. Pip-ing is also double-walled and flexible, creating a sealed system, and if even one fluid ounce of gas is found in one of the various vaults, an alarm will go off and the system will shut down, preventing a leak.

“What this all means is that unless there is a catastrophic subterranean event, the chances of such a release as occurred in 2008 are infini-tesimal,” Koch said in an e-mail.

open to traffic from 126th Street to 136th Street this Saturday. That section has been closed since May 10 while construction crews create a roundabout interchange at the Main Street intersection.

Despite weather delays, Keystone Project Manager Jeremy Kashman said the road should still reopen at the end of the promised 45-day closure.

“With all the rain we have had recently, they will have to play a little catch up,” he said. “Longer shifts will make up for any time they need to make up.”

Construction will continue on Keystone Parkway throughout the summer. The Main Street interchange is part of the final phase of a three-year project to lower the grade of Keystone Parkway under six major intersec-tions. When completed, the north-south traffic on Keystone Parkway will flow without traffic lights from 98th Street and 146th Street.

The members of the Spark Button committee got to experience “guilty until proven innocent” this week.

On Friday, I received an ominous-sounding e-mail from Mr. Larry Delaney, deputy direc-tor of the Indiana State Gaming Commission. He needed to speak with me about a written complaint he received questioning the legality of giving away a cash prize of $500 based on the purchase of a Spark Button. YIKES!

I had the weekend to let my mind wan-der. Unfortunately my imagination conjured up visions of chain gangs, orange jump suits and other unpleasant thoughts about life be-hind bars. Or maybe I get off with a suspended sentence and time served, but I have to endure the humiliation of a tearful, televised public apology asking for forgiveness for the sins I have committed against my community. A public flogging, and a life marked by the scarlet letter of fundraising shame. All weekend long, I kept trying to figure out which “I” went without a dot or which “T” I carelessly forget to cross.

Anxious to face my accusers, Mr. Delaney and I connected, and I prepared myself for the worst. Fortunately, Deputy Director Delaney was professional, competent, helpful and human.

The evidence against me included my columns about Spark Buttons, our ads and even the pic-

ture of 6-week-old Davis Crain, our first Spark Button customer in Current In Carmel three weeks ago. The evidence seemed indisputable and the case air tight. I had been caught red-handed trying to raise money for the fireworks.

And then he asked me for my license num-ber. “Uh … I have one, I just don’t have it memorized, but look under Rotary Club of Car-mel,” I said as respectfully as possible.

“Here is is,” Delaney replied, “Indiana Charity Gaming Raffle License #120051. Did you know this number must be on every document, com-munication and memorandum involving your fund-raising event?” That was my undoing. Dis-playing the license number was the “T” I forgot to cross. Got it. 120051. 120051. 120051.

No jail time, thanks to Carmel Rotarians Brian Rhea and Kirk Fosnaugh for being detail-orientated and having filled out the tedious pa-perwork months ago to make sure Spark Buttons are legal. And to the anonymous whistle blower, I am raising money to memorialize the day you received your right and freedom to ruin my week-end. Now, how about buying a Spark Button and we will call it even? God Bless all Americans!

Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation’s Cen-tral Park has met all the requirements for the Wildlife Friendly Park Certification and received this distinction during a ceremony last week.

The Central Park Wildlife Friendly Certifi-cation event was held June 18 near the Monon Community Center. This event recognized the park as the first wildlife friendly park in Indi-ana, and the Carmel Clay Park and Recreation Board has set a goal to certify the rest of the parks as soon as possible.

“We are pleased that the Indiana Wildlife Federation has decided to certify our parks as a model for the state, and it is fitting that the ceremony takes place in Carmel’s Central Park as it has quickly become a featured spot in the community to enjoy a variety of wildlife, plants and landcapes,” said Parks Director Mark Westermier.

The Indiana Wildlife Federation’s Board of Directors is excited about this type of part-nership, which can play an important role in fulfilling IWF’s goal of educating the public in protecting and promoting wildlife habitat enhancement for tomorrow.

This program was developed by the IWF to provide wildlife habitats in many different types of land uses, such as backyards, school

yards, industrial parks, housing developments, farms and places of worship. The goal for this certification is to design into the property’s landscape the basic necessities of wildlife-- food, water, cover and a place to raise young.

Central Park has been an ideal property to do this as it has a multiple-use recreational theme and a diverse land use to create the spe-cial needs of many species of wildlife. There are a variety of different types of native species of vegetation present, which can be supple-mented with other native plants that benefit wildlife.

IWF biologists have provided guidance to the technical park specialists on how to conduct baseline studies to record the exist-ing plants and animals in the park. From this survey information, a design for a three-year program for the Central Park Wildlife Management Plan was created. This baseline information is the major part of the certifica-tion process that identifies the biological char-acteristics of the Park and a plan for long-term management to maintain the Wildlife Friendly Park Certification.

It has been 145 years since generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant signed the uncon-ditional surrender at Appo-mattox, Va., in April 1865, officially ending the American Civil War. In that horrible four-year conflict, more than 600,000 soldiers died defending their states, their beliefs and their honor. This civil conflict impacted every facet of American his-tory and culture. It is such an ingrained part of our heri-tage that it continues almost every weekend somewhere in the United States through living history re-enactors. Back by popular demand, the Civil War re-enactors will once again set up camp at CarmelFest. Units representing the Union and

the Confederacy will be in uniform and in character during the Festival. While

these are re-enactor units, they represent actual regiments in the war. These men have full-time jobs, and are not paid for their avoca-tions as re-enactors. They purchase their own authentic replicas of uniforms, equip-ment and weapons, and often wear the facial hair

and haircuts that were used by their forefa-thers in the actual conflicts. A little known fact about our state’s role in the Civil War is that Indiana had more volunteers for the Union than any other state. In addition, there were 47 Medal of Honor winners from Indiana, including Captain William W. Kendall, of the

49th. The Civil War re-enactors are please to be returning to CarmelFest. Their encamp-ment area will be set up just east of City Hall on the grounds of our good friends at Marketing Services of Indiana. Make sure you drop by and visit with them, and experience a little of our Hoo- sier heritage. They

ing a 1917 U.S. Army Color guard, who were part of the 150th field artillery regi-ment, out of fort benjamin harrison and fought during WW I. Jim Burrell and his wife Joyce have been Carmel residents for over 34 years. They have watched Carmel grow and evolve and are proud to be a part of the ever-chang-ing landscape. As a member of the Rotary Club of Carmel, Jim has been an active volunteer with CarmelFest since the Rotary first became involved as the facilitators of the Festival. The Carmel City Council is proposing a significant shakeup of its district boundaries. The process has been difficult, but City Council President Rick Sharp said the pro-posed changes will benefit constituents in the long term.

Carmel’s annexation of Southwest Clay becomes official July 27, and that expansion is forcing the council to change its district map. The annexation agreement between the two sides mandates that Southwest Clay be incorporated into a council district while remaining fully intact. That fact, along with some preexisting issues, has made the pro-cess challenging for the council and will force greater changes to the district map. Sharp said the proposal, expected to be up for a vote next month, best achieves the council’s goals.

“We had two goals and an underlying premise, and that was that we could not break up Southwest Clay,” he said. “It prob-ably would have been easier to redistrict if that hadn’t been a requirement.”

Those two goals, Sharp said, were to balance district populations and make the five sections more consistent in shape and physical size. In the proposed plan scheduled to have been formally intro-

duced at last night’s council meeting, district numbers would be dropped in favor of descriptors. No current council member would be in the new district including Southwest Clay, named Southwest. Sharp would fall in the Northwest district, Councilman Eric Seidensteckir would repre-sent Central and Councilwoman Luci Snyder would cover Southeast.

However, the plan places two council members, John Accetturo and Joe Griffiths, together in the proposed Northeast district. Because Southwest Clay must be permitted to select its own representative in 2011, Sharp said this situation wasn’t avoidable.

“It was going to happen,” he said. “It was just a matter of how and who.”

Sharp added that it was mathematically possible to pit any two current council members against each other. In order to prevent any undue political influences from affecting the redistricting efforts, the council hired consulting firm Wabash Scientific in March to help it objectively achieve its two stated goals.

The council went through this same process just four years ago, but Sharp said facing these political issues with city elections right around the corner made the task much more difficult this time. Still, he added that the council was nearing the point at which redistrict-ing would need to be done again, even without the annexation.

“Right now the districts are horribly unbalanced … and it’s primarily a factor of growth,” he said.

Currently, Sharp’s District 1 is the largest in physical size and population. He represents the fastest-growing area of the city, but other districts’ constituencies have been shrinking over the past sev-

eral years. The proposed redistricting plan would level the districts’ population and homogenize the five areas as much as possible.

The council is hoping to approve this plan later this month before Southwest Clay officially joins the city. Any new district map would not go into effect until January. In fact, Sharp would represent the residents of Southwest Clay for 18 months until the area can elect its own representative.

The reason for the haste, Snyder said, is to allow voters, espe-cially those in Southwest Clay, to become familiar with their new districts in time for the upcoming elections.

“If we put this off until the end of the year, as we could do, that wouldn’t be fair,” she said. “We want to do this fast.”

Sharp said the proposed plan accounts for future growth, based on current trends, and barring some unforeseen changes, he said it should be several years before the council will have to undergo this process again. Even if the 1.6-square-mile area of Home Place is annexed, which Sharp said isn’t at all imminent, the proposal would allow for those residents to be divided into three surrounding districts.

Ah, Paris! It is the quintessential city of haute couture, the birthplace of style, and the incubator for trends.

Maison et Objet, the Parisian home decor trade show, is, undoubtedly, the debutante ball for fashion and design momentum. Attendance at this show is high on my bucket list, but I must live vicariously for now and simply glean information about the introductions that will eventually cross the pond – from sources who did attend.

It appears the big color story was in the blue family. Pale baby blue to deep shades of indigo indicated a cooler direction for spring/sum-mer. Turquoise is still strong in shades, ranging from soft shades of robin’s egg blue to deep-saturated, gem-like turquoise. Green has gone chartreuse, while the pale orchid and lavender shades, which have been testing the water for the past six

months, are gaining a foothold.All of these tones are being served

against a background of grey for a cool summer palette.

Scale took the stage with size and im-pact. Even the most traditional pattern, when morphed into over-sized scale, provided drama. Exceptionally large flo-ral, plaids and damasks stole the show.

Stacking and layering was spotted everywhere at Maison et Objet, offering a “Princess and the Pea” fairytale-like feel to home decor.

The global nature of news and cul-ture has impacted the path of design. The reports shared that details such as beading, bottle caps, recycled wire and screen-printed native prints were making their way onto furni-

ture, accessories and hand-woven baskets. The fusion of India and pop culture was another

direction seen on pillows with photographic images

of street scenes and de-tailed embroidery in

updated cir-

cles and swirls. Gardening in urban settings is a trend supported with terrariums and vertical hanging planters.

Not a stick of stained wood could be found in the 3,000 showrooms of this international in-terior style show. Raw and reclaimed wood fin-ishes, bleached woods and painted woods were the foundation pieces. All the finishes, even the painted ones, had a grey-washed undertone.

Linen and hand woven textiles were found used for everything from upholstery to bed-ding. There was elegance in the simple nature of these fabrics, especially when adorned with monograms and embroidered motifs.

While some of these trends have been spot-ted in the U.S., some are still in the infancy stages. Regardless, it is safe to consider the Mai-son Object Trade show as a crystal ball of our interior design future. As always, trends a just that: trends. Take them as a hint of an overall direction, but never a substitute for beauty and good taste.

In the design industry, Jay Slifer dabbles in just about any form imaginable.

In reality, the experienced designer does more than merely dabble. He’s an accomplished mul-tidisciplinary designer in the fields of graphic design, product and furniture design, interior architecture, Web design and even marketing. The new tenant at Carmel’s Indiana Design Center admits he’s a jack of all trades and master of none, but his versatility is beginning to ben-efit him more than he imagined.

“I probably should have focused on some-thing in my late 20s and not been all over the place,” he said. “It’s like my mom said, ‘When anybody asks you to do something just say you know how to do it and figure it out later.’”

Slifer has gained a number skills following this logic, either letting his natural abilities do the teaching or picking up tips from his fellow designers specializing in different areas. It takes only a quick glance at his résumé to get an idea of Slifer’s various talents. He has designed for clients such as Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Calvin Klein, American Express and Cuisinart, among others. He’s designed flatware, lighting,

picture frames and even the tables on which they rest. For a residential customer he can design the room that will hold these items, and for a business selling these goods, he can design product packaging, build a Web site and whip up a marketing plan.

In a time when more customers are looking for a one-stop shop, Slifer said his business is benefiting.

“The way people are developing their busi-nesses is catching up with my business model,” he said.

“That’s a product of necessity of the changing design world. You have to wear a lot of hats.”

correct. All of these reasons have been reported. Research shows us of those kids who were over-indulged, 67 percent felt the overindulgence related to parental problems, not to their wel-fare. Hugs!

There’s a speaking trend going on right now that I dislike. It’s common among teenagers and young adults. The trend is this: After stating something amazing, weird, fascinating, obscure or otherwise interesting, the speaker waits for a response from the audience – oral or visual – and then adds, “I know, right?”

Do you hear that? It’s me pounding my head against the desk in front of me.

This probably shouldn’t irritate me to the level that it does, but it reminds me of an in-teresting language phenomenon most prevalent among women: asking permission for requests and other statements.

Let me explain. How many times have you heard someone make a request or a statement, and then follow it with, “OK?”? For example, “I need you to clean your room, OK?” No, not OK. The problem here is that the statement isn’t a question or an option. It’s a requirement. But if you add the “OK?” to the end, it becomes an option. And it’s a weak way of communicating.

The same is true with, “I know, right?” It’s almost like asking permission for the story to be amazing or funny or ridiculous or whatever: “I know it’s amazing/funny/ridiculous, don’t I?” More appropriate would be something along the lines of, “Can you imagine that?” or “Isn’t that awful/hilarious/crazy?”

Unlike the “OK?” issue, “I know, right?”

seems to be widely used by members of both genders. Normally, this type of wishy-washy language is used most frequently by girls and women because of some underlying thinking that it’s more feminine to ask rather than state what you need. While it may be considered, in certain circumstances, more polite to ask for things (“Would you pass me the sugar, please?”), when you need something, it’s not impolite to just state it (“Dan, please make 10 copies of these brochures.”). Adding “OK?” is totally un-necessary, and it cripples the request.

Men tend to have fewer problems using strong language (and I’m not talking about swearing here, folks) because they are, in gen-eral, raised with the idea that strength is tan-tamount to masculinity, so that rubs off in the way they speak. Next time you’re at a restaurant with a mixed-gender group, listen to how men and women order their food. Men tend to state what they want (“I’ll have the surf and turf”), and women tend to ask for what they want (“Could I have a Caesar salad, please?”).

In any case, I’d like to see “I know, right?” eliminated from the vernacular of, well, everyone.

She was only two blocks from Central Park in New York, but a world away from her home in subur-ban Chicago. And for 17 year-old Annie Yokom of Naperville, Illinois, the evening debut in a New York cabaret club might mark the beginning of a Broadway career.

Yokom is the winner of the Second Annual Michael Feinstein Foundation Great American Songbook High School Competition staged in early June in Indianapo-lis – an event that moves to Carmel next year with the opening of The Palla-dium, where singer Michael Feinstein is Artistic Director.

The Feinstein Foundation works to strength-en awareness, enjoyment, and exposure for great American popular songs with today’s young people through activities like the annual competition for high school singers. Grand prize includes a performance during a show at Feinstein’s New York club. On June 15 and 16, Michael Feinstein brought Annie Yokom into

the spotlight.“It was incredible – like a dream come true,”

Yokom said, admitting a few pre-show jitters. “Michael told the crowd that this was my New York debut and he made it so comfortable to entertain ... It was so incredible that I don’t even have the words to describe it.”

Yokom may have Broadway footlights in her future. She’ll enter her senior year of high school soon and already has a long list of colleges with exceptional performing arts programs.

“After college, I will try to move to New York and start auditioning,” she said

While Yokom was on stage, Feinstein Foundation Executive Director Doris Anne Sadler realized that she was seeing the future of American popular song right before her eyes.

“Julia Bonnet of Carmel was fantastic last year, and so is Annie Yokom,” she said. “It occurred to me that the Feinstein Founda-tion is an incubator for this fantastic talent, and the reception that Annie received from a seasoned New York theater crowd

was overwhelming.”Among those in the audience were competi-

tion judges Susan Powell, a former Miss Amer-ica, and accomplished jazz singer Catherine Russell. Both live in Manhattan and turned out to cheer on the high school performer.

Can young singer Annie Yokom see more performances like this in her future?

“I hope so, because this is the coolest thing to do,” she told Current in Carmel just after the performance.

The first fruit out of the ground, from the vine, onto our table and into our mouths each year? The only one with seeds on the outside, considered in the rose family, but not fruit? It’s almost time for us to indulge. We see them ripening; the bees have already done their job of pollinating the flowers. The rains have gone, and the sun is beating down, giving the plants, flowers and buds everything needed to grow and ripen.

Each solstice from spring to summer, I write of strawberries as the passage of cold to warmth. The gardens begin to flourish with their boun-ties of harvest, ready to be robbed by the ani-mals in your yard, especially fond of these sweet treats. The following are additional facts yet to be printed by in columns; I hope you find them as intriguing as I do.

The etymology of the name “strawberry” is still basically unknown. One theory says that in the 19th century, some English children picked the berries, strung them on grass straws and then marketed them to be sold in town as “straws of berries.” The other theory says it was derived from placing straw around the growing plants to help protect the ripening fruit and fragile young stalks.

Strawberries are grown in every U.S. state and in all provinces in Canada. In California alone, there are more than 23,000 acres planted each year, which yield more than 1 billion pounds of edible crops. If the berries were picked and laid berry to berry, in a line, it would wrap around the world 15 times.

Strawberries have become very popular, and in most major polls, they are voted the second most beloved natural flavor behind, can you guess? Chocolate. When voting for favorite fruit flavor, strawberries generally win hands down,

especially among children. Most people associate these berries with

dessert, but strawberries are very versatile and match well with many things. In my hotel we will use them with cheeses, especially goat cheese, brie and all bleu varieties. Any kind of green salad concoctions do well, with the com-bination of any of the above ingredients.

Of all the fruit available, and all the ones we grow, strawberries offer some of the easiest gardening possibilities. They have more versatil-ity than most fruit, matching up with all types of foods in all cuisines, and they can be used in all courses or meal periods. So why not run out and get some today?

Here’s a nice refreshing summer beverage that is great to use up those very ripe berries, with or with out adding your favorite adult mixer.

Ingredients:• 1 cup ripe strawberries• 2 cups ice• 1 can sprite or 7 Up• 1/2 cup bar sugar

Directions:In a blender puree the berries and bar sugar until well blended. Add the ice and puree until finely crushed. Pour in the soda and pulse blend until mixed well. (If alcohol is used, add that with the ice, prior to the soda).

salt, and garlic; rub mixture evenly over both sides of lamb. Cover and marinate in refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight.

remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper. Place lamb on a grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill 3 minutes on each side (145 degrees for medium-rare) or until desired degree of doneness.

In the last years of his life, the great Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy was the subject of his own religion/cult. He died not at his comfortable rustic home but at a remote railway station.

These two historical facts are the jumping-off point for «The Last Station,» a fictionalized ac-count of Tolstoy›s last months.

It's quite doubtful that Vladimir Chertkov (Paul Giamatti), the leader of the Tolstoyans, actually sent a young disciple (James McAvoy) to spy on the writer›s family. Or that Tolstoy›s wife, Sofya, was quite the raging cauldron of anger and self-pity that Helen Mirren portrays her to be.

Tolstoy himself is something of a minor player in his own story. He›s played with sly wit and veiled egotism by Christopher Plummer. Late in life, Tolstoy came to reject the comforts

his riches had earned his family, and embraced a pastoral philosophy based on love and com-munal property.

Sofya, though, sees his desire to name the Tolstoyan movement as the main beneficiary in his will as an abandonment of their nearly 50 years of marriage.

As unlikely as writer/director Michael Hoffman›s version of events is, it does make for a wonderful chance for this talented cast to fume and weep and otherwise emote expansively.

Having spent a week-end in Chicago enjoy-ing copious amounts of wonderful food and drink, this week’s offer-ing will be my favorite dish from my visit there.

This open-faced sandwich is served at the Gage Restaurant in downtown Chicago. It is a sinfully layered brioche, roasted beef brisket and cheese sand-wich with a touch of tart green apple. The apple serves to cut through the flavors of the aged Swiss cheese and the brisket, and adds a fresh, crunchy flare to the sandwich.

Never underestimate the power of a great combination of tart fruit, roasted meat and an aged cheese. It’s an extremely versatile combina-tion which has survived eras in history from the croque monsieur to the Grecian gyros.

Roasting a full-sized beef brisket at home takes about an hour and a half, at 350 degrees.

Make sure to baste it often with its own deli-cious juices.

Serve this with a side of your favorite barbe-cue sauce and a stout beer.

Ingredients:• 1/2 - 1 pound of brisket, depending on how

many people are served (A whole brisket is roughly 2 1/2 pounds.)

• 1 green apple,• 1 block of aged Swiss cheese. (Another option

is sliced provolone or even mozzarella.1 loaf of brioche bread Directions:1. Roast brisket at 350 degress for 1 to 1 ½

hours. When the brisket appears to “string

apart” and the meat is toasted at the edges, it is done.

2. Slice and pile the brisket atop two pieces of thickly sliced brioche.

3. Top the meat with the thin slices of green apple.

4. Pile the cheese on top of the apple.5. Place the sandwiches on cookie sheets and

crank the oven up to 450 degrees. Put the sandwiches in until the cheese has melted and started to bubble.

Recently, I shared a link from a campaign on Facebook. I had received an e-mail around a political issue in which the goal was to get a petition signed. The e-mail was sent to 3,500 people. With each send, the open rate of the email decreased. The number of visitors to the companion Web site also slowly dwindled as did the number of people signing the petition.

After a month, I clicked the “share” button in the email message I had received. I shared the message, which dropped a link with a comment, into my Facebook account. I’ve only got 150 friends in Facebook, and I’m not active with this network. Still, I had 16 “friends” comment on the link and comment on my simple message that accompanied the link, “If you live in Indi-ana, you should check this out.”

All this activity occurred within 30 minutes of sharing the link. All ages responded, from my 21-year-old sister-in-law to my 76-year-old father. It’s also worth noting that not all of the comments were positive. Two people disagreed and presented an opposing viewpoint.

The next day I checked the Web site statistics and during the hour I shared the link, which was several days after I got the e-mail, there was a spike of 10 additional unique visits and

10 new signatures on the petition. Sixteen of my friends made comments and 10 visited and signed. All this activity sparked by one 42-year-old sharing a link in one social network where he has 150 friends. What if 50 people did that? What if instead of sending an email to 3,500 people we simply asked the 250 people affiliated with the campaign to share the link in all their social networks?

That is “the network effect.” People want to connect with people and they believe other peo-ple most. A first-person voice is always preferred to a company message. And while not everyone is interested in social networks, these networks and the network effect can’t be ignored. Every-one’s heard of them and that alone makes them influential.

Facebook for me is a lot like church. I don’t go there as often as I should and I’m certainly not as active as I should be, but it appears I still have a relationship with the people I know there.

Exfoliation is a process in which dead cells on the surface of the skin are sloughed away, reveal-ing new, healthy skin cells. Exfoliation occurs naturally, but as we age, cellular turnover slows down, giving skin a dull appearance.

Oily skin has difficulty exfoliating on its own, because oil in the skin causes the dead cells to stick together. When the skin is dry, dead skin accumulates quickly, creating a thick, dry shell.

There are many manual methods of exfolia-tion that can help increase cell turnover. Adding these simple exfoliation treatments to your skin-care regimen can make a big difference.

When your body is full of toxins – and in most cases it is – you may experience side ef-fects, including lethargy, achiness, a fatigued mind and/or a low energy level.

To prevent build up of toxins, you may elect to follow a detox diet, preferably once or twice a year along with a good quality herbal cleansing supplement – if your physician agrees. It has shown to be a good way to get back in tune with your body and give your internal systems a reset to allow them to work at their best.

The human body constantly is working to eliminate toxins through the lungs, kidneys, digestive system and particularly the liver. Ev-ery minute of every day a properly functioning liver eliminates small amounts of toxins, heavy metals, bacteria and other impurities from the blood before returning it to circulation. If the impurities are not bound by fiber, they may be subject to re-absorption and recirculation by your body, ending up where they started, and therefore leaving you no better off.

Trapping and binding toxins secreted through bile for transport from the body is crucial for effective support of the body’s internal detoxification and cleansing func-tions. A cleanse program assists the body’s

natural “sweeping” process by providing fiber and herbal supplements to trap and move toxins through the digestive tract and sweep the colon of accumulated waste. Most cleanse programs are a 10-day process and should be paired with a healthy diet, including simple and light meals along with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Performing a body cleanse also can be a great way to jumpstart weight loss and boost metabolism, as it can get your digestive organs functioning at peak performance again. In-ternal organs will work more optimally with the removal of excess waste, and studies have found that the body will become more effi-cient and can improve the way it transports fat from cells for energy.

Ever remember hearing sodium is bad for you? Yeah … they were wrong.

Maybe they were playing some sick joke on you. Some friend they are. I suppose it’s possible they just didn’t know better, because the entire myth originated with food companies touting their products as “low sodium” to make them appear healthy without any actual scientific evidence.

In fact, that just may have been the best mar-keting strategy in the history of America. The claim is that sodium increases blood pres-sure. Well, it does, but only temporarily, because it makes your blood retain more water, increas-ing the volume of your blood. It’s not a perma-nent problem.

Sodium, commonly referred to as salt, is an electrolyte. These electrolytes are very important for someone when they encounter a long bout of sweating. All athletes need sufficient levels of electrolytes. Another well-known electrolyte is potassium. The two interact together, so too little of either, as you could imagine, would be detrimental.

Your water and electrolyte levels are self-regu-lated by being secreted in urine. However, there are a few occasions when you should limit your sodium intake: genetic predisposition (which your doctor should inform you about) and high

blood pressure from other factors (i.e. you’re too unhealthy).

High blood pressure is commonly associated with many other symptoms, as a result of obesi-ty. If your health is already poor, a higher blood volume (from higher sodium intake) will only worsen your problems. It could potentially turn atherosclerosis into a full-blown stroke. My sug-gestion? Exercise, eat healthfully, and cook with salt, because it brings flavor to everything. Don’t deprive yourself of something that used to be traded ounce for ounce with gold!

Healthy touch is a key element in promot-ing essential bonding between children and their parents. Massaging your baby enhances the emotional bond with your child and can calm him down, improve sleep patterns and help soothe their stomach. It’s also a wonderful way to share special time with the new addition to your family.

When? Choose a point when you are relaxed and unhurried and won’t be interrupted. Don’t plan to massage your baby when he has a full stomach or is hungry.

How? Make sure you are comfortable. Sit on the floor or on the bed, or put your baby on your lap. Lay your baby on his back on a terry towel since first you’ll massage the front of your baby, then the back. The room should be warm (75 degrees if possible). Talk to or sing to your baby. You both might also enjoy some soothing music in the background.

With what? Natural oils are the best, such as almond oil. Warm a few drops in your hands before beginning.

A few notes of warning: Don’t use oil on

the head or face. It’s important to respect your baby’s space. Ask permission, even if your baby can’t give verbal consent yet. Stop if you sense overstimulation. As babies grow they will be more apt to enjoy a longer session, but children really enjoy it. My kids still ask for foot-rubs to this day.

It’s funny what people do with freedom.Among the topics covered today in standard

U.S. History high school text books is the Sec-ond Great Awakening, the Evangelical Christian movement in America’s first 50 years or so from the late 1700s into the mid-1800s.

Remembering that the U.S. Constitution was written in 1787, ratified in 1788, and took full effect in 1789, it’s interesting to note that histo-rians typically date the start of the Second Great Awakening as 1790.

FYI, the “First Great Awakening” in America was circa 1740, led by philosopher and scientist Jonathan Edwards. His phenomenal grasp of Christian intellectual and spiritual pursuits, and his prolific writing, are often overshadowed by one exceptionally famous yet (for him) highly atypical sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.”

That sermon has been used ever since, oxy-moronically it seems, to scare people into the secure and loving arms of Jesus Christ. Christ didn’t die because God was mad at us; Christ died because God loved us (John 3:16), and Edwards knew that. It’s more illuminating to read Edwards’ less famous works (15 volumes worth), but I digress.

Back to 1790, the Second Great Awaken-ing, and a new government created by “We the people, in order to form a more perfect union.” Perhaps the first full, free cultural expression of

America’s newly ordained citizenry was to get God into the act.

For all the hue and cry and debate about whether the United States of America is a “Chris-tian country,” at its founding (1770s and 1780s) only a small minority, perhaps only 10 percent, of the Colonial population belonged to a mainline Protestant church – the Anglicans, the Puritan Congregationalists, Presbyterians Lutherans, etc.

The organized Protestant churches, remem-ber, were part of the British tyranny and Euro-pean establishment from which the Colonies were trying to free themselves.

Belonging to a church, we infer, was not the fashion. Believing in God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, however, was demonstrably perva-sive in American culture.

To that point, it is telling that the U.S. Consti-tution’s “We the people” Preamble quoted above, included the action phrase, “and (to) secure the blessings of Liberty on ourselves and our Posterity.”

America thus began, and an awakened, free people understood Liberty to be a blessing from God. Political and cultural freedom, united with personal faith in God, proceeded to storm across the American landscape.

Have you ever watched a friend endure an abusive relationship and felt helpless as you watched her suffer, yet hang on to a man she knew wasn’t good for her?

My guy friends have asked me, “Why the heck do women stay with an abusive man?” The answer isn’t always so simple.

It may be hard to understand why even the most intelligent, well-meaning woman would choose to go down an unhealthy path. Unfor-tunately, the abuser doesn’t always show signs from day one. In fact, he usually starts out quite charming. The abuse begins so gradually that it’s hard for a woman to even put her finger on when it all began or how she got sucked into such a situation.

And because of the fact that much of the abuse occurs behind closed doors, I don’t think people quite realize how common it is. I myself can relate to this, as years ago I too was in an abusive relationship. Although it’s not my favor-ite subject to talk about, I think it’s important to shed some light on the issue, considering many women suffer in silence, thinking this treatment is “normal” or is her fault.

Do you think your friend may be suffering in silence? Or are you starting to see some red flags in your own love life? Here are some warning signs to look for:

• The abuser tries to take her away from her friends. (Remember, the more isolated she becomes, the less she will expose his poor treatment.)

• He portrays a double standard – he can cheat or lie, but if she even glances in the wrong direction of another man, he makes her feel she is a loose woman.

• She tries to make it look as if her life with him is perfect, when her closer friends see signs otherwise, such as his teasing her incessantly about her insecurities (until she gets to a breaking point, and then, of course, he says he’s sorry) or his keeping her on an emotional roller coaster (“disap-pearing” for days at a time, making empty promises, womanizing, etc.).

Of course, the obvious signs are any type of physical abuse, as well as emotional and mental abuse (sometimes a little more subtle and harder to put your finger on).

Going to Europe for vacation this summer? According to the Consumer Electronics Association, the aver-

age household has 24 electronic gadgets and many of them travel with us. Making sure you have everything you need before you depart will save you a lot of money and aggravation.

Let’s start with power.Make sure everything that you plan on plugging in has a volt-

age range of 110-240V and frequency range of 50-60Hz. Laptop computers, portable DVD players, cell phone chargers and

most consumer electronics are generally capable of switching to the higher voltage used in Europe, but items like curling irons aren’t.

If any of your gadgets don’t have the higher ratings, you will need to purchase a voltage converter that will “step down” the voltage from 240 to 110.

The next item you will need plenty of are wall-plug adapters. The wall plugs in Europe have two round holes, so the slotted plugs we use in the U.S. won’t fit.

In my past travels, this was the one item we never seemed to have enough of. Most of us charge up all our devices at night at the same time (laptop, netbook, cell phone, digital camera, porta-ble game player, etc.) so make sure you count how many gadgets you plan on charging simultaneously before you buy the adapters.

If you have a lot of devices and extra room, you should consid-er packing a power strip, as many hotel rooms in older European hotels have few outlets (you will need a three-pronged US-to-Europe adapter for the power strip as well).

As for cell phones, in virtually all cases, using your U.S. car-rier’s “roam” option while in Europe will be the most expensive option (as much as $1.50 per minute), so when in Rome, don’t

roam! Make sure you turn your U.S. cell phone off or leave your smartphone in “airplane” mode so it doesn’t automatically con-nect you to the European cellular networks when you get there.

If you have the time, purchase an “unlocked” GSM phone be-fore you leave (Craigslist or eBay), or buy a cheap pay-as-you-go phone once you get there (the safest option), or check with friends who travel abroad to see if they already own a travel phone.

Prepaid SIM cards are sold by virtually every merchant in most European countries, so you can pay as you go and control your cellular expense instead of getting a big surprise on your bill once you get home.

In addition, if you don’t already have a Skype account, get one and install the Skype software on your laptop and your smart-phone, then buy $10 worth of credits. You can make Skype-to-Skype calls for free (get anyone you want to call while on your trip setup with an account before you leave as well) or pay @ 2 cents per minute to call any standard land line or cell phone even back in the U.S.

Anytime your laptop is connected to the Internet, you can use it as a phone via Skype.

To use Skype on your smartphone, you must be connected to the Internet via WiFi. I’d use the unlocked cell phone for local calls and Skype for long-distance calls.

Finally, download a hotspot locater app on your smartphone so you can easily find free and low cost WiFi.

Well, the World Cup is up and run-ning, literally. Lot of running in that game. Seems they’d get smart, strap on skates and play it on ice.

Anyway, what little watching I have done has left me with the distinct impres-sion that this soccer stuff is going to catch on, one of these days.

I’m just kidding. I know soccer is the planet’s main game. I’m actually a big fan, and I like the World Cup almost as much as I like the hockey cup playoffs named for Stanley.

I like the purity of soccer – this is the ball, those are your feet, over that way is the goal, have at it and try not to (a.) use your hands or (b.) kill each other.

Now, I can’t say I understand everything about it. Goals, for instance. I know they’re few and far between, but is it really necessary for the guy who scores a goal to run around the sta-dium doing all that hugging? I’m not kidding. He kicks the ball into the net and he’s mobbed by all his teammates on the field. Then he runs over to the bench and he’s mobbed by all his teammates there. Then he goes across the field and hugs all those guys. Then he runs up in the stands and hugs Sections 107 through 121, Rows A through NN. Then he puts his shirt

back on and they start playing again.You never see this sort of behavior in other

events, such as, oh, bridge tournaments.Another thing you do not see, or more rightly

hear, is that ceaseless racket in the background of every broadcast. It’s made by something called a vuvuzela (when it’s not being called a lepatata) and basically, it’s a horn that makes a sound described as a giant hive of very un-friendly bees. Or bees flat, since B-flat is the note produced.

Although the presently annoying version is South African, you see horns like this at soccer games all over the world except, of course, pee wee league games at public parks on Saturday mornings, although I suppose it’s just a matter of time before some parent shows up with one.

Which, now that I think about it, might be far preferable to some of the things parents shout at kiddie league games of all varieties.

One of things I enjoy about the World Cup is the fact that vuvuzela players from every corner of the globe descend on it. You see every variety of human available, and a few that I suspect haven’t yet been categorized by the anthropologists.

I used to work with a sports editor who made fun of soccer. If it wasn’t part of his big four – football, basketball, golf, auto racing – it was to be mocked. I guess

he reasoned that the only real sports were the ones he considered American (never mind that golf originated in Scotland and race cars are worldwide).

But I also worked with a wire editor who reminded young reporters like me that most of the world is not American, not white, not male, and doesn’t speak English. He could have thrown in something about most of the world playing soccer, too, but we have the World Cup to remind us of that. Hand me my vuvuzela.

Every morning when I get up, I peruse my mini yellow legal pad, where the previous night I have meticulously outlined every chore and re-sponsibility I need to address the next day. I put everything on the list. I even include “get dressed” to avoid embarrassing moments, like the time I ran into Marsh at 6 a.m. for a quart of milk.

You may be scoffing at my lack of sophistication, wondering why I don’t link my iPad to my Droid or upload Facebook to my iPhone. Maybe download my LinkedIn data to the iPod. I have no idea if what I just said makes any sense, but I do know I have a tee time at noon. It’s on my list. When someone designs a legal pad with a USB port, we can talk about this again.

Several years ago, my wife squeezed in a few extra chores when she found the list on my desk, which is why the next day I went to Shelbyville to make a speech to the Rotary Club, checked my list and came home to mow the lawn, then drove back 30 miles to Shelbyville to eat lunch. It seemed odd at the time, but that’s what the

list said. I never question my list.The list I create each evening often contains

weightier obligations that I first note in my Week-at-a-Glance, a standard calendar that, incredibly, costs $39.95 at most office supply stores. I’ve had one every year since college, and

I have no intention of giv-ing it up for something that requires charging. I do wish I had bought several calendars each January back in the ’60s and ‘70s when they were really cheap, because appar-ently every five or six years, the days of the week and the dates match again. Why wasn’t I informed of this?

Recently, my Week-at-a-Glance calendar was stolen from the front seat of my car. The crook also took my GPS, a huge package of Slim Jims and two 12-packs of Bud

Lite. I decided not to call the police because I had pretty much provided this low-life with enough provisions to be on the lam for a week. There was also a stack of 100 WISH-TV photos of me. All 100 were still there. That punk could have taken just one.

If you’re the guy who stole my calendar, a couple of reminders of things to do, in case you

don’t have a yellow legal pad you can upload to. You have a dental appointment, but don’t try to cancel. They get very grumpy about reschedul-ing. Enjoy your root canal.

You also have a golf date with Greg at noon on June 18. He’s an ex-cop. Maybe you can chat about what you do in your free time. He’d get a kick out of that. And you need to get my wife a wedding anniversary gift. It’s our 30th. You should have stolen my book last year. You could have gotten away with a cheap scarf.

You also have a breakfast speech at a retire-ment home. Sorry to make you get up so early, but that will give you more time later in the day to break into cars. And don’t get any bright ideas about committing a heist at the senior cot-tages. There are six locks on every door. By the way, this place is way out in the boonies. But you’ll find it. You have my GPS, remember?

Finally, I have a humor column deadline every Sunday at noon. Try to come up with something clever and original. For example, this week I wrote about how you broke into my car. I hope readers find that funny. Even if I didn’t.

farmers say it is essentialto crops. More practicalprescriptions may includecontrols on developmentand agricultural runoff,and maybe even a ban onphosphorus in lawn fertil-izers. Such questions arebeing discussed and couldreach the Statehouse asearly as January.

In the meantime, offi-cials are trying to deter-mine how much phospho-rus is acceptable inIndiana lakes and streams.

Once that happens,Tedesco said, “it’s reallygoing to impact a lot ofthings.”

Terrible tasteLast month, a large

growth of algae in thePrairie Creek Reservoir inDelaware County pro-duced a chemical com-pound that fouled thetaste and smell of drinkingwater from Muncie to In-dianapolis, including thatof Indianapolis Water cus-tomers.

Officials at IndianaAmerican Water Co.,which owns the reservoir,cited warm water tem-peratures, ample sunlightand the presence of nutri-ents, including phospho-rus, from nearby farms.

Officials stressed thewater was safe to drink.

But that didn’t exactlycomfort people like DeaChisman, Muncie. Shecouldn’t stand the taste —or smell. So she bought apitcher with a filter andadded raspberry flavoring.

“I could smell it as soonas I turned the faucet on,”said Chisman, 66. “It waslike a musty odor. I boughtthe pitcher because I’mnot wasting money on bot-tled water. That’s how Isolved my problem.”

The effects of algae,however, go beyond bad-tasting water.

In Indiana, largeamounts of algae and ex-cessive plant growthfueled by fertilizers haveaffected fish populationsin streams and waterways,according to Tedesco, whoalso is the director of theCenter for Earth and En-vironmental Science atIUPUI.

What was once a gravel-ly bottom in some portionsof the White River, for in-stance, now have beencovered with plants.Where bass might havethrived, carp now live.

“It’s a recreationalfisheries impact, for sure,”Tedesco said.

“It’s an overall ecosys-tem health issue as well,”he added. “You startlowering the diversity ofthe animals that are inthese systems.”

Algae also have affectedrecreational activities, asthe unsightly green blan-kets deter boaters and

swimmers.“It’s gotten so thick that

it’s impossible to do anyrecreational boating on theWhite River,” said JohnGoss, executive director ofthe Indiana Wildlife Fed-eration, who is a kayakfisherman. “It’s definitelyhere. It’s not just at theother end of the nation.”

Exceeds EPA levelsIndiana, in fact, lies

near the heart of the prob-lem.

Phosphorus levels in In-diana reach as high as 881micrograms per liter — atGreensburg Reservoir inDecatur County — whichis more than 35 times thelevel recommended by theU.S. Environmental Pro-tection Agency.

Federal officials haveidentified the MississippiRiver Basin, with its highconcentration of agricul-ture and industry, as thelargest contributor of nu-trient loading to the Gulfof Mexico.

According to the Na-tional Oceanic and Atmos-pheric Administration,agricultural runoff fromthe Mississippi River Ba-sin contributes 70 percentof the nutrient load to thegulf.

For that reason, the U.S.Department of Agriculturehas launched an educa-tional and funding initia-tive to provide farmers —including those in Indiana— with grant money to in-stall devices that couldlessen fertilizer runoff intowater sources.

In Indiana, the depart-ment is focusing on water-sheds that eventuallyempty into the MississippiRiver Basin, which includeheadwaters of the WabashRiver in the north-centraland northeast portions ofthe state and at the head-waters of the East Fork ofthe White River.

“Everyone’s in this to-gether,” said Shannon Zez-

ula, state resource conser-vationist for the USDA’sNatural Resource Conser-vation Service. “We’re outthere helping farmersminimize their impact butkeeping their farms pro-ducing.”

Indiana lags some Mid-western states in establish-ing nutrient criteria. Min-nesota, for example,adopted water-qualitystandards for phosphorusin its lakes in 2008. Wis-consin has proposed nutri-ent standards for its lakesand streams, according tothe EPA.

“I think it’s overdue,”Tedesco said, but EPA of-ficials say thestate’s progressranks about inthe middle.

In 2001, theEPA adopted anational actionplan that recom-mended statesdevelop and im-plement water-quality criteriafor nutrients.

Soon after theEPA’s recom-mendation, Indi-ana officials be-gan samplingwater for nutri-ents, but afterfive years, insuf-ficient dataforced anotherround of sam-pling. It wascompleted thisyear.

“What we did was col-lect data to establish a cor-relation between phospho-rus and the growth ofalgae,” said Bruno Pigott,assistant commissionerwith IDEM’s office of wa-ter quality.

The state is drafting aphosphorus standard forits lakes and reservoirs,which could be in place inabout 18 months.

“As far as implementa-tion, it’s going to be verytricky,” Tedesco said.

Effect on farmersAn outright ban would

devastate agriculture inIndiana, according to theFarm Bureau, which iswhy legislators currentlyare researching only re-stricting phosphorus inlawn fertilizer.

“There’s no questionthat phosphorus in water-ways can cause problems,”said Rep. Nancy Dembow-ski, D-Knox, who chairs abipartisan lakes manage-ment work group chargedwith monitoring thehealth of the state’s lakes.

While legislation re-stricting lawn fertilizercould come up next year,

Dembowski saida wider bancould be prema-ture.

“I’m not say-ing it couldn’thappen,” shesaid, “but no oneis planning thatat this time.”

Other Mid-western states,including Wis-consin and Min-nesota, have re-strictedphosphorus inlawn fertilizers.

Low- andzero-level phos-phorus lawn fer-tilizers are avail-able in Indianastores, saidLance Latham,

director of public affairsfor Scotts MiracleGro Co.Latham said the company“would not necessarily op-pose a ban,” as long as itdoes not include organicfertilizer — which is ani-mal byproducts — where itis impossible to removephosphorus, he said.

What the state’s regula-tory limit won’t address isrunoff from residentiallawns and farms — whichis called nonpoint sources— that empties into riversand streams and lakes andis difficult to regulate.

In 2008, Indiana De-partment of Environ-mental Management es-tablished a nutrientnonpoint source manage-ment plan that is a pre-requisite to receiving grantmoney from the EPA. Theplan also stresses bestmanagement practices, in-cluding building naturalbuffer strips that could befunded through the EPA.

Measures include plac-ing a filter strip, such as aswath of grass, between afarm field and a stream; orplanting annual plants thatremain in the ground dur-ing the winter to absorbfertilizers.

No zoning regulationsZoning could play a

role, but there is no state-wide law on regulatingzoning around largebodies of water, whichwould fall under theauthority of local govern-ment, according to IDEM.

“Most states ban subdi-visions around waterwaysbut not in Hoosier land,”said Glenn Pratt, boardmember of the Sierra ClubHoosier Chapter and for-mer head of the EPA’s wa-ter discharge program forRegion 5.

“We put them back toback, belly to belly, rightnext to the water source,”he added. “People wholive around them havecome to understand theylike big green lawns butthey don’t like big greenlakes.”

Finding solutions thatsatisfy everyone will notbe easy because of the var-ied sources of phosphoruscontamination.

“It comes from so manyplaces and the impact is sogreat,” Tedesco said. “Wedo have to manage it, butthe question is how.”✭ Call Star reporter JasonThomas at (317) 444-6087.

U.S. officials beginningtwo days of talks in Beijingtoday may find their Chi-nese hosts even less ame-nable to outside pressurethan usual.

Treasury SecretaryTimothy Geithner and Sec-retary of State Hillary Rod-ham Clinton are leading anearly 200-person delega-tion in talks on various is-sues.

U.S. officials said lastweek they hoped to makeprogress on a number offronts, including China’spromotion of homegrowntechnologies at the expenseof foreign alternatives.

But two emerging forcesthreaten increased frictionbetween the world’s largesteconomy and its fastest-growing one:

» Europe’s debt crisis ismaking China reluctant tomove on key U.S. demands,including allowing its cur-rency to rise in value.

» Beijing’s increasinglyrobust pursuit of a state-ledeconomic model is pinch-ing U.S. corporations.

“U.S. corporations arelooking much less indis-pensable to the Chinese,”says Ian Bremmer, authorof “The End of the FreeMarket.”

U.S. executives also com-plain about China’s in-creasing focus on develop-ing its own powerfulcompanies and innovativetechnologies rather thancultivating foreign invest-ment.

China is the world’s fas-test-growing economy, andits banks dodged the toxicsecurities that wreckedbalance sheets in Europeand the United States. Butthe view from Beijing is notsanguine.

Chinese officials worrythat Europe’s debt crisiswill lead to stagnation inBeijing’s largest exportmarket. The yuan has risenthis year about 13 percentagainst the euro, which islikely to further crimp Chi-nese sales.

This wonderful Carmel family hoped to transform an outlived backyard space housing a large play set in a sea of mulch into a small escape that family and friends could casually enjoy. A formal house nestled in a quasi-wood-land setting presented a fantastic opportunity to develop a retreat in partnership with nature, yet explored the modern elements often found in our Hamilton County neighborhoods.

Phase 1 provided a stunning update to the premium pressure-treated deck by opening up the space with stylish black aluminum spindles, wider transition steps and a redesigned floor plan. While we prefer lively synthetics, this project reminded me of the virtues of real wood. Horizontally inspired facia breaks up the cavernous void under the second story deck, which the climbing hydrangea is quickly con-suming. Hidden access doors open to an appre-ciated storage area.

Phase 2 centered on the natural lower liv-ing area with an Indiana limestone seat wall boldly retaining the woods edge. Natural field-stone boulders serve to break up the wall and provide a little drama. We debated the patio floor surface for a few weeks and eventually embraced an edgy, compacted dusty limestone material framed by an informal tumbled brick paver. You’ve likely seen this cost-friendly sur-face employed on the Broad Ripple canal walk-

ing paths and in the formal garden paths of the IMA. It is equally comfortable in each.

Creating the right vibe is always a primary ambition and the result of careful planning. The recessed fire feature edged with the repeated

patio paver, surrounding native inspired land-scape and functioning dry creek bed elements makes this a contemporary blend of form and function. Early reports are encouraging – lots of late-night wood fires with family and friends,

time to relax and time to play. They are mak-ing the most of summer. Making the most of life. Incredible outdoor living spaces can do that.

During the early months of summer, a hosta enthusiast might think: Am I gardening? Or feeding slugs?

Unlike feeding birds, feeding slugs is rather disheartening. Large holes in the delicate leaves of hostas absolutely spoil their appearance. Funny how the size of the holes is directly pro-portionate to the size of each fat and happy slug in your garden, huh?

Hostas thrive in a shady, moist environment, as do slugs. And because their leaves are so close to the soil surface, they’re extremely susceptible to damage.

Through the night, slugs feed their slimy way through our gardens and that makes it hard to hand pick them because gardeners are sleeping. Some people swear by jar lids filled with beer sunk into the soil surface, but I can’t help think-ing “Waste beer on dreadful slugs? Why should they have all the fun?”

Or, I’ve heard using a vinegar solution twice in May, which kills young slugs. But I’ve found that the key to slug-free hostas is the careful selection of resistant varieties. Some varieties resist damage and it’s all in the substance of the leaf.

Note that some hosta leaves are more sub-

stantial than other, more papery-leaved hostas. There is a distinct difference.

Blue-leaf hostas, which are really a gray-green color, (gardeners love to say blue when it’s clear-ly not, like we’re colorblind) typically have a thicker, more substantial leaf. Some great blues are Elegans, Halcyon and Love Pat, all of which resist slug damage.

Blue hostas prefer denser shade than yellow leaf hostas, which can actually tolerate quite a bit of sun. Several yellow hostas have sub-stantial leaves like Sum and Substance. See, substance is even in the name. Also check out Sunpower. You’ll be pleased.

Besides keeping slugs at bay, these hostas are a carefree and hardy garden plant. You can divide and share them, and some of them have incred-ibly fragrant flowers. Look to the large white flowers for fragrance, as the lavender flowers are less fragrant.

And enjoy gardening again…without feeding the slugs.
