The project which is said to be a hu-manitarian initiative and not for profit operations is aimed at adding value and creating financial inclusion is a brainchild of South African based Zim-babwean businessman Frank Buyanga.

Only 100 of the $5 African Medallion Dollar (AMD) have been put in circula-tion, and holders have been given cer-tificates that serve as confirmation and guarantee that they possess the genu-ine articles.

The AMD — usually held for the in-cremental value they gain over time are issued by South African-based Af-rican Metallion Group (AMG).

Initially, AMG which has since been registered with the London Metal ex-change — launched 10 one-quarter ounce medallions on April 2, 2017 which sold out before the launch date.

In terms of bids placed with the AMD since last month, the company has seen and witnessed the nominal value of its tokens rise from $5 to $120 as at June 18.

Commenting on the project, Buyan-

ga said: “This project was initiated with no intention to realise profit.”

he said the African Medallion Group was his response to many people who have been asking him what they could do with their money to ensure that it does not lose value.

Buyanga says he firmly believes that everyone must own multiple sources of income and the medallions are one of the many ways.

In his preamble to the AU medal-lion launch, Buyanga said they “believe demand would rise…and any further purchase will be done in consultation with the (original) 100-piece holders through a closed loop trading.”

This gives all initial subscribers po-tential to secure greater returns in fu-ture.

The guaranteed buy back amount was fixed at $5 per each medallion. however future value will be deter-mined in trade amount.

The medallion is a gold backed in-strument. This means it is backed by gold.

As the world loses faith in fiat mon-ey (or paper money), there is a shift towards wealth-baked currencies, in-cluding digital currencies as Bitcoin, ethereum (Russia) and medallions, which

Recently, as global financial markets become increasingly volatile, investors have been shifting their portfolios and investments towards more stable se-curities and havens.

Gold reportedly inched higher on Tuesday, supported by global political uncertainties, after touching a five-week low earlier in the session as a key US Federal Reserve official reaffirmed the central bank’s hawkish stance on interest rate hikes.

Risk aversion due to Brexit, concerns over US President Donald Trump’s ability to carry out financial reforms, election results in europe and Middle east turmoil have provided some sup-port for gold, said Mark To, head of re-search at hong Kong’s Wing Fun.

HWANGE Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) recently commemorated the 45th anniversa-ry of the Kamandama mine disaster.

The 45th annual Kamandama disaster was celebrated amid assurance by the company’s board that safety and health were top prior-ity.

In 1972, 427 mine works perished following a mine explosion that occurred in two stan-zas.

The event is held to pay tribute and honour 427 miners who perished in the Kamandama underground mine shaft disaster in 1972.

This is an important landmark event in Zimbabwe and the Southern Africa Develop-ment Community region’s history.

More than a third of the victims were mi-grant workers from Malawi, Namibia, Mo-zambique and Botswana.

Since the day of the tragic explosion, HCCL has organised commemorations which are punctuated by a two day event comprising a golf tournament and the main event day on June 6.

On the morning of June 6, 1972, 427 coal miners perished in a suspected methane gas explosion in Hwange Colliery Kamandama Shaft.
