Like John the Baptist, night time is decreasing, so that the light of day may fully shine. Jesus is called the light, and John is called the lamp that holds the light. When we were baptized, we re- ceived the light of Jesus and became lamps! Long ago, nighttime bonfires in honor of St. John were set blazing. Even fireflies seem to be celebrating with their own little lamps. Maybe that is why fireworks are so popular this time of year! Some people set out luminarias (paper bags with sand in the bottom and a lit candle inside) to light a path to their front door to “prepare the way of the Lord.” Even if your “bonfire” is in a barbecue grill, bless it on St. John’s Day with these words: O God almighty, unfailing ray and source of all light, sanctify this fire that we have kindled in joy at the birth of John, the herald of your Son, and grant that, after the darkness of this life, we may come to you, who are light eternal, Amen.

LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, This past week was our parish’s first Week of Directed Prayer. It’s my hope that this can become an annual event, alongside the other retreat and spiritual development offerings in the parish. This Week of Directed Prayer utilized a number of spiritual directors who gave participants a taste of what having a spiritual director on a regular basis might be like. Many Christians find having such direction a benefit for the spiritual life. I hope that this has been the case for our 14 participants. This past week also was wonderful Vacation Bible School week. Some spectacular décor, music, crafts, art, food, and games were offered to a full house of young folks. Thanks to all the great crew members who served at VBS this past week. I am happy to say that the new Knights of Columbus leadership was installed after the 4:00pm Mass this Saturday, June 22nd. Thanks to Mr. Bob Hand who served the Council for two years in leadership; and welcome to Mr. Floyd Sones who will serve along with the others in the Council. You will note that the new fencing around the elementary School is basically complete. Also, there is work being done to upgrade the football field surface. While the struggle for human freedoms continues across the world, one freedom we cherish in our country is freedom of religion. You may want to go to the USCCB website www.usccb.org and take a look at the information on religious freedom offered by the Bishops of the United States. I would remind you also of the 4 DVD’s currently on the parish website for the Year of Faith offerings. These are excellent, brief teachings about particular “life questions”. 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR HELP NEED St. Jean Vianney Extended Care Help
Looking for mature dependable people 21 years and older to work part-time with St. Jean Vianney Extended Care. Moms are welcome and may bring their children. Extended Care hours of operations are from 2:15pm-6pm, Monday through Friday. It is also possible to work as an ‘on call’ substitute. The position will begin on August 5, 2013 and end in May, 2014. Duties consist of preparing snacks, calling roll, supervising homework, and supervising play. Interested persons may contact Charlyn Bliss at (work) 753.7644, or pick up an employment application from the St. Jean Vianney Preschool office. SJV Gator Football Field This summer there will be extensive work done to our football field so that it is ready to go for August. Please know that teams and/or individuals will not be allowed on the field this summer while this work is being done. For all intents and purposes, the field is “closed”. The field will NOT be available for baseball practice or any other sporting event until the work is completed.

ADORATION “NOT JUST ANOTHER MEETING”
All are invited on Tuesdays to continue their worship and love of God at adoration. It is a visit, not a meeting. A visit of ‘love to love’.
