PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our mission as the Body of Christ in the parish of St. Jean Vianney is to model the love of Jesus by discerning and doing God’s will, consciously Sharing the Word and Eucharist at worship, educating in faith all ages, evangelizing our parishioners for Christ’s mission, and serving justly God’s people, our sisters and brothers within our parish boundaries, our larger Baton Rouge community, and into the world.

June 24th is the birth of St. John the Baptist. This day is called Midsummer Day because we are halfway between the beginning of spring and the beginning of autumn. It is also sometimes called “Summer Christmas.”

Six months ago we celebrated the birth of Christ. A half year has gone by, and now we celebrate another birth. John the Baptist said, “Christ must increase, but I must decrease.” What do you think John meant? Now that summer is here, the days begin to linger and the nights grow shorter. Like John the Baptist, night time is decreasing, so that the light of day may fully shine. Jesus is called the light, and John is called the lamp that holds the light. When we were baptized, we re-ceived the light of Jesus and became lamps! Long ago, nighttime bonfires in honor of St. John were set blazing. Even fireflies seem to be celebrating with their own little lamps. Maybe that is why fireworks are so popular this time of year! Some people set out luminarias (paper bags with sand in the bottom and a lit candle inside) to light a path to their front door to “prepare the way of the Lord.” Even if your “bonfire” is in a barbecue grill, bless it on St. John’s Day with these words: O God almighty, unfailing ray and source of all light, sanctify this fire that we have kindled in joy at the birth of John, the herald of your Son, and grant that, after the darkness of this life, we may come to you, who are light eternal, Amen.

LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, This past week was our parish’s first Week of Directed Prayer. It’s my hope that this can become an annual event, alongside the other retreat and spiritual development offerings in the parish. This Week of Directed Prayer utilized a number of spiritual directors who gave participants a taste of what having a spiritual director on a regular basis might be like. Many Christians find having such direction a benefit for the spiritual life. I hope that this has been the case for our 14 participants. This past week also was wonderful Vacation Bible School week. Some spectacular décor, music, crafts, art, food, and games were offered to a full house of young folks. Thanks to all the great crew members who served at VBS this past week. I am happy to say that the new Knights of Columbus leadership was installed after the 4:00pm Mass this Saturday, June 22nd. Thanks to Mr. Bob Hand who served the Council for two years in leadership; and welcome to Mr. Floyd Sones who will serve along with the others in the Council. You will note that the new fencing around the elementary School is basically complete. Also, there is work being done to upgrade the football field surface. While the struggle for human freedoms continues across the world, one freedom we cherish in our country is freedom of religion. You may want to go to the USCCB website www.usccb.org and take a look at the information on religious freedom offered by the Bishops of the United States. I would remind you also of the 4 DVD’s currently on the parish website for the Year of Faith offerings. These are excellent, brief teachings about particular “life questions”. I hope you are having a good, hot week. Its tomato picking time…. Love,

ST JEAN VIANNEY CAPITAL CAMPAIGN “Our Time to Pray, Our Time to Give”

A MATCHING GIFT There are parishioners who work for businesses which will sometimes MATCH a charitable donation to a Church or School. Is your employer one of those people? If so, your gift to the Capital Campaign could be matched. Sometimes, the employer will match a gift to a SCHOOL but not a CHURCH. Regardless of the case, we can help you find out if your employer will match your gift. Talk to Fr. Tom or Debbie Daigle at the parish office, 753.7950 so we can help you help us.

PARISH OFFICE SUMMER HOURS The Parish Office hours will be Monday - Friday 8:30am - 4:00pm during the summer. We are closed from 12 noon until 1:00pm for lunch.
