A Delightful Parish Picnic

We had a wonderful Parish Picnic last Saturday. Those who stayed for the photo are about one quarter of the crowd. The Centennial Picnic was enjoyable with good food, good music, good games, and good company on a day with good weather. We thank all who helped in different ways, especially Phuong Nguyen and the Picnic Committee, for their hard work. May God bless you and our Parish as we continue our celebration of a “Century of Faith and Service.” We are proud to be part of a “Family of Faith since 1916.”

Breakfast with the Bishop Bishop Patrick McGrath will visit our Parish on Sunday, August 21, starting with the 8:00 am Mass, then a Breakfast in the hall. Mark your calendar.

FOCUS ON THE MISSION "There are so many things to do." "We have so little time." How many varia-tions of these statements have you heard or even said yourself? Actually neither statement is completely true. There are many things to do in this life, but really few things that are vitally important. Working, searching, conniv-ing, and worrying our way to "gratify[ing] the desires of the flesh," as Paul relates in today's second reading, are really non-productive. So little time? When we take on the freedom that Christ offers us, we have all the time we need in this world, and even more in the next. Elisha, the prophet Elijah's chosen serv-ant, was slightly befuddled about what he should do. When Elijah called, he returned to bid farewell to his parents and provide food for his people. Only then did he follow. Jesus demands something different, something more of his disciples. He calls us to a single-minded determina-tion to drop everything and follow him. Now, not later. CONCÉNTRATE EN LA MISIÓN "Hay tantas cosas que hacer". "Tenemos tan poco tiempo". ¿Cuántas variantes de estas afirmaciones has oído o incluso dicho tú mismo? Nguyên Giáo Hoàng Bênêđictô XVI Kỷ Niệm 65 Năm Linh Mục

Ngày 28 tháng Sáu tới đây sẽ diễn ra lễ kỷ niệm 65 năm linh mục của vị nguyên giáo hoàng Bênêđictô XVI.

Vào ngày 29 tháng Sáu 1951, lễ Thánh Phêrô và Thánh Phaolô, thầy Joseph Ratzinger được thụ phong linh mục, cùng với người anh là Georg Ratzinger.

Lúc ấy có hơn 40 linh mục trẻ cùng được chịu chức trong bối cảnh của một nước Đức đang hồi sinh cả về vật chất lẫn tinh thần, thoát khỏi những vực thẳm mà Hitler đã đẩy quốc gia này vào.

Trong tập hồi ký, Đức hồng y Ratzinger nói về những kỷ niệm của ngày thụ phong linh mục: “Đó là một ngày hè rực rỡ không thể nào quên, đó là thời khắc quan trọng nhất của đời tôi.”

Việc tái khẳng định căn tính linh mục và niềm vui đời linh mục là mối bận tâm thường xuyên của Đức giáo hoàng Bênêđictô XVI trong nhiều giai đoạn của đời ngài, khi làm giáo sư thần học rồi bộ trưởng Bộ Giáo lý Đức tin, và cuối cùng khi làm giáo hoàng, đặc biệt khi ngài mở Năm Linh mục 2009-2010.

Vào ngày thứ Bảy tuần trước, giáo xứ chúng ta đã có một buổi picnic vui, với sự tham gia của trên 300 người tại khuôn viên trường học xứ đạo. Mọi người đã có cơ hội gặp gỡ, trò chuyện, tham gia một vào trò chơi, và chia sẻ bữa ăn đơn sơ nhưng ngon miệng với các loại đồ ăn khác nhau (hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, tostadas, bánh mì, dưa hấu, chips).

Xin chân thành cám ơn tất cả những ai đã cộng tác dưới nhiều hình thức, đặc biệt là bà Nguyễn Phương và Ban Tổ Chức Picnic cho Năm Bách Niên. Nguyện xin Thiên Chúa chúc phúc cho tất cả và dẫn dắt xứ đạo chúng ta trong Năm Bách Niên kỷ niệm “Một Thế Kỷ Đức Tin và Phục Vụ.” (Xem hình trang 3)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION An old and still vital treasure in our tra-dition is a document called the "Apostolic Traditions," giving us a snap-shot of church life in third-century Rome. Its author, Hippolytus, describes the liturgical life of the church and rec-ords the actual texts of the prayers. The way he explained the various "orders" of the church was the basis for a major re-form of the rites of ordination by Pope Pius XII in 1947, and later for the Sec-ond Vatican Council. Hippolytus tells us that a bishop had to be elected by the entire people, and that ordination had to take place on a Sunday in the presence of the people, the presbyters, and neigh-boring bishops. The bishop-candidate is ordained by the other bishops, who im-pose their hands on his head while eve-ryone else keeps a profound silence, awaiting the outpouring of the Spirit. There is a prayer of blessing said by one of them, on behalf of all, asking for the Spirit and describing his ministry. Later centuries layered new features on top of this liturgy, including the require-ment for three bishop consecrators. To-day, whenever a new bishop is an-nounced (election by the people is no more), a kind of genealogy is provided, tracing his pedigree through the conse-crating bishops down through the centu-ries to Peter and the first body of believ-ers. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El último sábado de junio o el primero de julio en un ayuntamiento de Valcida-cos, España, se pone en escena el Mise-rere escrito por Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870). Esta obra relata como un músico llega de noche a la Abadía de Fetero pidiendo posada. Los hermanos del monasterio lo invitaron a pasar la noche. Allí él les contó su vida pe-caminosa y su deseo de encontrar un Miserere (Salmo 51) digno de expiar sus pecados ante Dios. Le contaron del Mis-erere del Monte que cantaban durante la noche los monjes difuntos de un Monas-terio que había sido destruido siglos atrás. El músico afanado por encontrar su Miserere, corrió a la montaña donde escuchó aquel lamentoso y bello canto. Al regresar a la Abadía intentó escribir la música de aquel Miserere, pero lo único que logro fue volverse loco. Aquel pobre hombre murió sin reconocer que cada quien debe entonar a su manera su propio y pobre Miserere mei (piedad de mi).
