CarmelFest: By the numbersBy Kevin Kane Current in Carmel
The basic principle behind CarmelFest hasn’t changed. Food, live music, games, vendors and fireworks – these features are staples. Instead, the details – and numbers – are what differentiate one year’s CarmelFest from another. Below are some of the key numbers to know about CarmelFest 2010.
The photo from last year’s CarmelFest fireworks display on the cover of this section was taken by Carmel resident and photographer, Shane Rodimel. A model with 20 years of expe-rience, Rodimel said he made the “natural progression” five years ago when he moved be-hind the camera and started Shane Photography. As the official CarmelFest 2010 photographer, Rodimel will be capturing the action again this year. His photographs from last year, however, will be on sale at this year’s CarmelFest to help raise money for the event. Rodimel will have a booth displaying his other work as well, including pho-tos from his recent trip to Italy (below).
The number of minutes Google estimates it would take to drive the approximately 2.2-mile parade route. Hundreds of participants will march, ride, or dance up Range Line Road from Carmel Drive to Main Street. A complete parade lineup can be found on page 4 of this section. Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. Monday.
The number of volunteers who will continue do-nating their time to help make this event possible.
The number of additional Carmel police officers who will be on duty during the Monday fireworks display, according to CarmelFest spokespeople. This number does not include the officers cover-ing the rest of the city. During the parade, about 20 additional officers will be on duty.
The approximate number of people expected to attended the two-day festival, weather permitting.

5The number of dol-lars that will go to one lucky purchaser of a CarmelFest Spark Button. These buttons help offset the cost of the an-nual fireworks display, and each Spark Button purchased enters its buyer into a drawing to win this cash prize. The winner will be selected next Tuesday.
500
The number of total vendors at this year’s CarmelFest. Food will be avail-able from 43 differ-ent vendors, and 93 vendors and organizations will have booths at the event, offering both free and for-sale items.
136
The number of shells in this year’s fireworks display; last year’s presentation fea-tured 3,182 shells, according to Fireworks Chair-man Jeff Worrell. However, he said the cost of this year’s display is the same as last year’s - $30,000. “This increase is due to the limitation on diameter of product we could safely use at the changed shoot site,” Worrell said. New shell designs include rings, hearts, stars, smiley faces and four-leaf clovers. The B105.7 Fireworks at CarmelFest Launched by Firestone will begin at 9:45 p.m., last about 22 minutes and will be simulcast to the music on B105.7

“Honor, duty, God, and country.” According to IMPD officer Jason Fish-burn, these are the priorities of a hero.
Almost exactly two years after a near-fatal gunshot wound to the head, Fish-burn will be showing Carmel what a hero is as grand marshal of the St.Vincent Heart Center of Indi-ana Parade at CarmelFest on Monday.
On July 10, 2008, Fishburn was shot once in the head and once in the pro-tective vest on his chest while leading a police chase to apprehend a homicide suspect.
After an intense recovery process and much physical therapy, the right side of his body remains relatively para-lyzed. He can no longer shoot a gun, and he now works at the academy instead of being on patrol.
The theme of this year’s CarmelF-est parade is “Celebrating America’s Heroes.” According to Peggy Powell, the parade chairperson, no one could bet-
ter represent this theme than Fishburn.“We chose Jason because he is our
idea of a perfect hero,” she said. “It is up to us to show respect for our fine police officers and the hard work that they do every day.”
As grand marshal, Fishburn will ride comfortably in a convertible with a banner honoring him. Fishburn said he is not sure exactly what message he will send, and does not know what to expect, but he is happy to have been chosen as the grand marshal.
“I guess I’m just excited,” he said.Despite his Purple Heart and IMPD
Medal of Honor, and the many people of Indiana who call him their hero, Fish-burn modestly questions that status.
“I don’t know about that,” he said. “I just did my job; that’s all I did.”
But the many parade goers and committee members that honor him on Monday will try to show him that he has done much more.
“Given Jason’s history, he has shown that he is a very brave police officer,” Powell said. “Jason was seriously wounded in the line of duty, and we just want to show him that, to us, he is a true hero.”

The two most notable changes to CarmelFest this year were made with its younger visitors in mind.
CarmelFest 2010 features an expand-ed KidZone and a new area tailored to children too old to enjoy features of the bigger, better KidZone.
“The KidZone, on the south side of City Hall, will have more games and activities for children 12 and under, an expanded stage, real live pony rides and a petting zoo,” Chairman of Car-melFest Gary Frey said.
The North Zone is now the Ameri-cana Zone. This area will be similar to the KidZone, but it is aimed at older children as well as their parents and other adults.
“The Americana Zone is on the north end of CarmelFest and is an eclectic assortment of entertainment on the stage, games, displays and activities geared more for adults and older chil-dren,” Frey said.
According to Frey, the focus of the parade this year is Celebrating American Heroes and Jason Fishburn, an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer who was shot once
in the head and once in the chest by a murder suspect in July 2008, will be the grand marshal for the CarmelFest Parade. The parade will also include Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I, and World War II color guards and reenactments.
“Our theme for July 5th is The Great American Songbook Celebrates the Fourth of July,” Frey said. “The Carmel Symphony Orchestra and [The Center for the Performing Arts] are preparing a celebration of The Great American Songbook. We will also be highlighting The Palladium, which opens here in January 2011.”

COMMENTARyBy Gary Frey
Many people in the Carmel commu-nity are of the opinion that CarmelFest is organized, oper-ated and funded by the City of Carmel. And while the City of Carmel has some positive influence on this great commu-nity event, in reality, it is a unique partner-ship between The Rotary Club of Car-mel, the City, numer-ous corporate sponsors, and more than 250 dedicated volunteers, who give of themselves unselfishly so that we can all enjoy the greatest festival in Indiana.
But, the work of organizing, raising the funds, scheduling all of the entertain-ment, and pulling it all off each year without a hitch is all, ultimately, on the shoulders of the Carmel Rotary Club.
You see, in 2004 CarmelFest was on the verge of being cancelled, for a va-riety of reasons. But, Mayor Jim Brainard decided to make one last phone call to see if The Carmel Rotary Club would be willing to take on the task of organiz-ing and operating the event. In a mat-ter of weeks, the club was able to pull it off, thanks to its leadership.
“It was a scary leap of faith, when Carmel Rotary agreed to sponsor and manage the CarmelFest celebration of the 4th of July as our major commu-nity service project,” said former club president Judy Ford. “No one had any experience with the management of such a massive project but I know that the decision has proved to be benefi-cial to both the citizens of Carmel and our Rotary Club.”
From that first year of humble begin-nings, the CarmelFest of today has grown in scope and in its positive influence in the Carmel community. The
Rotary Club of Carmel is made up of 165 men and women business leaders, committed to enhancing the lives of their local and international communi-ties.
While the CarmelFest Committee is made up of non-Rotarians as well as Rotarians, the core leadership comes from within the club. And it is this ac-countability and volunteer spirit of ‘Service Above Self’ that fuels the club’s members to give so much of them-selves and their time. The club credits much of its growth and influence dur-ing the last few years to CarmelFest. Ac-cording to Ranjit Puthran, the incoming president of the club as of Thursday, “CarmelFest has had a significant im-pact on our club. It has been the focal point of our club’s activities, and is our center stone.”
This is my third year as the chairman of CarmelFest. But, my “bug” for service began in 2005, when I volunteered for CarmelFest for the first time. I was floored by the spirit of community at that event, and extremely impressed with the attitude and leadership of the Rotary members that I encountered; so much so that I joined the club. And, of course, they immediately put me to work.
Each year the members of the Carmel Rotary Club give so much of themselves to this community through CarmelFest. But, as is always the case they receive much more back in return. Not so much the tangible things that you would think, but changed hearts and minds that come from doing something that one loves. So, if you see a Rotarian this year at CarmelFest, him or her a hug and say, “thank you.” They do what they do because they love you and the Carmel community.

AT HOME IN THE PALLADIUM 2010-11 SEASON
By Danielle Turnbull Current in Carmel
There is no doubt that there will be plenty to do at CarmelFest for July 4, some new things and some old. This year, one musical group will be return-ing to CarmelFest as it has every year since its inception.
The Carmel Symphony Orchestra will be performing at CarmelFest at a prime time: 8 p.m. in the gazebo, right before the fireworks on July 5. And this year, a special guest will accompany the 85-member orchestra: Julia Bon-nett, the Michael Feinstein Foundation Great American Songbook High School Competition winner from 2009.
Bonnett said she is looking forward to singing with the symphony orchestra for the celebration.
“It’s just great to get to perform in my community with other performers,” Bon-nett said.
Although a returning act, changes have been made to the performance this year. The group has typically played a patriotic combination of songs for each CarmelFest, but this year, as a way of supporting the new Palladium, the band will be honoring the Great American Songbook. Songs will include “Unforgettable,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business.” Duke Ellington and Hoagy Carmichael medleys will be
played as well, along with a salute to veterans and current members of the armed forces. The closing song will be one of the most familiar from the song-book: “God Bless America.”
David Bowden, artistic director and conductor of the CSO, is excited about the lineup and the celebration in gen-eral. He said it’s a very pleasing and relaxing event, one every person will enjoy, especially he.
“I love doing it because everybody comes to have a good time and enjoy good music,” said Bowden, who has been with the orchestra since 1999. This will be his 11th CarmelFest.
Bonnett’s head is held high about the performance, and she really hopes the community will take part in and enjoy the show.
“I hope it’ll go well and we’ll show off the orchestra,” she said. “It’s to let Carmel know what great musicians we have here.”

People going to the fireworks show at CarmelFest will have to manage with a couple of street clos-ings due to construc-tion.
“There will be no exit path east on Main Street, due to the construction of the new roundabout inter-change on Keystone,” CarmelFest Chairman Gary Frey said. “How-ever, Keystone will be open going north and accessible from 126th street, 116th Street and south on Carmel Drive.”
The fireworks will be held on Monday this year beginning at 9:45.

Additional parking spaces will be avail-able for this year’s CarmelFest celebration.
“(There is more parking) since we have the new underground parking lot at the Indiana Design Center just south of Main Street on Range Line Road,” CarmelFest Marketing Director Cindy Roberts-Greiner said. “The underground parking lot is free. It is located on the pa-rade route. And, it is less than one mile north of the CarmelFest festival zone.”
Parking will also be available at Carmel High School, along 3rd Avenue SW north of Carmel Drive and east of Range Line Road near the intersection
of 1st Avenue SE and 1st Street SE.Golf carts will be available to assist
in transportation to the festival from 12 to 8 p.m. on both Sunday and Monday. The carts will run from Main Street down Range Line Road, making stops at the
For bicyclists, CarmelFest is having a Pedal and Park, supervised, free bicycle parking, on the northwest corner of the Monon Trail Greenway and Gradle Drive at Carmel’s Civic Square.

At this year’s CarmelFest a special t-shirt designed by Current in Carmel illustrator Tim Camp-bell will be on sale at the Current in Carmel booth.
“My artwork is never finished. It’s abandoned,” Campbell said, adding that the fact he is never satisfied with his work has helped him develop into the talented freelance illustrator he is today.
Campbell has always found a way to draw. When he was a young man in school, Campbell drew illustrations on his classmates’ folders for a quarter, and jokes that was his first paid gig as an illustrator. Born in Indianapolis, Campbell had an aunt who painted.
“I was the only one who happened to be crazy enough to make a living out of being an artist,” Campbell said.
He attended the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio. While he was “eating and breathing paint” at art
school, Campbell said his talents devel-oped from the feedback he received from his peers on campus.
“We all held onto each other like rafts,” he said. “I was working so much there that I had to choose between paint and food at times.”
As Campbell develops his weekly illustration for Current in Carmel, he constructs two or three different ver-sions before submitting his final product for publication.
“I do a lot of research for local top-ics by talking to people around town or reading local news,” he said. “I try to stay away from national issues, but every once in a while I might do one.”
He admits that residents seem to like his illustrations about Carmel’s round-abouts.
“I think could do 52 illustrations on roundabouts a year and get away with it,” Campbell said.
Campbell’s t-shirts will be on sale for $15 at the Current in Carmel booth during CarmelFest. There’s a limited number of t-shirts being sold, so fans of Campbell’s work should show up early to purchase a CarmelFest shirt de-signed by Currentoonist Tim Campbell.

Time still available to register for Freedom Run
Current in CarmelThe theme for July 5 at CarmelFest is
“The Great American Songbook Cel-ebrates the Fourth of July,” but Carmel Brass will tie that theme into its Sunday performance.
Indiana’s only fully-professional large brass ensemble, will honor America and celebrate The Great American Songbook when they take the Gazebo main stage at 3:15 p.m. on Indepen-dence Day.
Patriotic melodies will honor those who have served and are serving in our armed services as well as those who believe in the ideals on which our country was founded. Musical arrange-ments by some of America’s finest com-posers will properly showcase familiar tunes as the brilliance of brass returns to CarmelFest. It will truly be “Red, White & Blue In Brass” when conductor Tom Akins gives the downbeat.

One of the most polarizing and talked about columnists from Current in Carmel is excited about her return to the CarmelFest parade.
Danielle Wilson will be participating in this year’s St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana Parade at CarmelFest after a great reception from fans and readers last year.
“Last year was awesome,” Wilson said. “I think one person may have yelled out something inappropriate about my chest size, but overall, it was a great experience. Lots of ‘I love your column, Danielle.’”
She hopes to get the same reaction this year from the crowd.
“I’d never been in any parade before,
so I had no real expectations going in to it. I thought I might hear some heck-ling, but was really pleasantly surprised by the crowd’s enthusiasm,” Wilson said. “I expect much of the same this year. Those that don’t like me probably won’t say anything at all.”
The greatest part of being in the parade to Wilson is feeling like a real celebrity.
“It’s cool waving like a princess and hearing people yell ‘We love you,’” she said. “I also got a kick out of riding with Dennis O’Malia. That guy’s hilarious.”
Wilson will again ride with O’Malia, a sales executive with the paper, in an early-model Ford Mustang owned and driven by Clarian North Medical Center CEO Jon Goble.

Just Art- an intense course on drawing and painting
By Elizabeth Noel Current in Carmel
The KidZone is pumping up its at-tractions for this year’s CarmelFest. Open for the duration of the festival, this family-friendly fun area will be the place for young CarmelFest goers to play games, watch performances, and even ride ponies.
“CarmelFest has gone on for many years, and there has always been a Kidzone,” said Kevin Mendell, who will be directing KidZone for the first time along with co-director Peter Primason. “But this year’s will be a little bit different. It will be very interactive and just a lot of fun for everyone.”
KidZone, located at the City Hall South Parking Lot, will have a stage set up for performers and shows. Perfor-mances will include Oogles n Googles, MC Axe and the Fire Crew, the Silly Safaris, and magician Ryan Demler.
Mendell believes that the pony rides will be this year’s most popular activity.
“This is definitely my favorite new attraction, and I hope it will be for the kids, too,” Mendell said.
A petting zoo, new games, and a special area for children five and under are among other first-time amuse-ments.
Though KidZone will feature new games and attractions, many of the old favorites will be returning. Kids can
jump on the ever-popular Eurobungy, a trampoline with bungy cords attached to a safety harness allowing the child to jump high in a stable environment.
To play a variety of games and par-take in different attractions, tickets can be purchased for 50 cents each. Many of the games range from two to four tickets, while the more special attrac-tions are seven to 12 tickets.

Between the parade, vendors, food, fireworks and three stages of entertainment, CarmelF-est has something for everyone, and serves as Carmel’s signature event
