Game two — “SYSC0’’ rolled a 726! Only to lose to “KATIE’S” 773. Not record breaking scores, but enough to win. Kurt Arakaki 174 (more about him later), Kevin Ya- mauchi 185, Brent Shern 203 and P.B.A. Regional award winner Jon Brandon 211. OBERLIN, PA—Tommy Gollick of Oberlin, Pa., set a United States Bowling Con- gress national record by rolling 47 consecutive strikes during league play at the Red Crown Bowling Center in Harrisburg, Pa., on May 11, pending the submission of certification pa- perwork. Gollick didn’t exactly get off to a great start during his Tuesday night scratch league with a 4-10 split and open first frame. But the split did not foretell what would turn out to be a record-setting evening. After knocking down the 4 pin for a 9-count in the open- ing frame, Gollick struck out for a 279 game and then pro- ceeded to throw three con- secutive 300 games to finish the four-game set with a total pinfall of 1,179. “I am still in total shock as to rolling 47 strikes in a row,” Gollick, a 32-year-old left-hander, said. “I just can’t believe that I could carry that PENNSYLVANIA BOWLER ROLLS 47 CONSECUTIVE STRIKES many strikes without some- thing standing.” The 47 consecutive strikes will officially set the record for most consecutive strikes in one session once certifica- tion of the league is complete. Gollick’s feat came during the first week of the summer league, which has been certi- fied in the past, and Don Kirk- patrick, the proprietor of Red Crown Bowling, said he ex- pects to submit the paperwork soon. Jeanne Naccarato of Ta- coma, Wash., set the record for consecutive strikes with 40 during the 1986 Women’s Cen- tral State Tournament. The formats of these 2010 events were the brainchild of USBC Managing Director of Media Pete Tredwell. In the Hall of Fame’s case, the out- door ceremony differed largely from the indoor ceremonies previously held at the site of the USBC Convention. “The outdoor ceremony was done to draw more public and media attention to the event and the IBMHF as well,” Tredwell said. “It was inspired by similar events that baseball and foot- ball do every summer. “From an operational stand- point, the ceremony and events surrounding it went great. DAVE COOK Leads Team To Scratch League Title At Cal Oaks Bowl

by Frank WeilerMURRIETA—DAVE COOK

bowled 259 and 268 in the semifi-nal and final games of the step lad-der finals of CAL OAKS BOWL premier scratch league. The result was two team wins and the league championship. The league cham-pionship was worth $4,500 or $1,500 per team member.

Cook led his SNIEDER IN-SURANCE trio team with a 230 average during the regular season, fourth best in the league. Amaz-ingly, thirty-two of the thirty-three league bowlers averaged above 200.

Cook’s championship team-mates are FRED RIANO and FRANK WEILER. Both Riano and Weiler averaged about 220 during the step ladder finals.

The other team finalists includ-ed Impact Marketing and Design (2nd place), Fast Lanes Pro Shop (3rd place), Crown Security (4th), Cunningham Motor Sports (5th), and Yes Zurvita.Com (6th).

Highlights of the step ladder finals included a 300 game rolled by PAUL NILSEN, a 299 by SCOTT FILIPI and 288 by JIM MURTISHAW.

There were plenty of excit-ing moments during the five final games, many strikes and pressure galore. The difference in the end though was SPARE MAKING. The champion Snieder Insurance team never missed a spare shot. Their only open frames were four splits in 60 frames bowled, by the trio.

The champions look for-ward to next season when a new league sponsor will be guarantee-ing $6,000 for the first place trio. That’s $2,000 per team member! The champions also want to thank the BOWLING NEWS for sup-porting our bowlers.

Betty SalvatoHall Of Famer Dies

by Carol Mancini, Editor NORWALK — At press time Tuesday, we received notice from Joan McRae that Betty Salvato had passed away this weekend.

Betty loved bowling, bowl-ers and the bowling business. As I remember Betty, she at-tended every State Convention, local association function, national affair and Bowling Writers awards dinner. Seems like she was always carry-ing a notebook to record the facts. Come on Betty, start putting those Heavenly Teams together.

the record.”Gollick is not exactly a

newcomer to honor scores. He had 22 800 series and 38 per-fect games before the 1,179, which included the 879 series he posted during the first three games. He also has a certified 800 series on a Sport Bowling pattern.

“Getting that crystal pin really meant a lot, as shooting 800 on a Sport shot in a tour-nament on three pairs of lanes is much more demanding than on a standard league pattern,” Gollick said.

Gollick started bowling at age 5. His mom started a league for the bank where she worked and it didn’t take long for him to get hooked. But the Saturday morning program was not nearly enough to sat-isfy his appetite.

“The owner of the center gave me 10 pins and an old ball that I used in my great-grandmother’s driveway,” Gollick said. “I was out there almost every day – rolling the ball, knocking the pins down, and running to catch the ball before it rolled over the hill. I would set the pins up and keep bowling for hours.”

He now bowls in two or three winter leagues on Sport conditions, and in the summer he bowls two leagues – one is a Sport league and the other on a house pattern in which he threw his 1,179 series.

Gollick, who works part-time in the pro shop at Red Crown Bowling Center, has bowled in PBA regional events since 2001. He has won two PBA regional titles, the sec-ond one coming this past April in Rockaway, N.J., where he topped a 108-player field.

“It took me eight years to finally win in PBA competi-tion, and it was an amazing weekend,” Gollick said. “Fol-lowing that up four tourna-ments later with the win in Rockaway really gave me a lot of confidence in my decision-making on the lanes. I am con-stantly learning, and trying to be a better bowler.”

He says the 1,179 achieve-ment is more of a celebration for the people who have sup-ported him throughout the years, such as his wife, Kelly, and his mom for starting that league 38 years ago.

“I have accomplished goals that I have set for myself, like winning on the PBA regional tour, and rolling 300s in PBA competition,” Gollick said. “But this feat isn’t something that one sets out to do, so this is why I feel it is a blessing.”

Four Share a $1,934 Match Series – William Garrett (left), Bobbie McCollum and Kenny “King” Kwan, along with (not pictured) Rick Hornback shared the Match Series at West Cov-ina with their 513 set. $2.00 got them $483.50 each.

Big Shooters at West Covina ABTA - Alvin Francisco fired a “299” game and Mikey Villarreal had a perfect game in the Memorial Event. They will receive Annual Awards for the fine bowling at the ABTA Annual Awards party at the South Point July 3rd.

WEST COVINA — Noli Sosa, a long time member and friend was the best last week-end as he won the Big Memo-rial Special in fine style finally downing Tim Tran to take home a sweet $9,850 topping 652 entrants. Noli was best in the Semis and won from the top seeded position.

This event had fair and semi tough scoring conditions each day in the four day event making it very fair for our members except Thurs night the scoring was higher due to oiling.

This event saw much ac-tion and great payoffs for our member. The Match Series was hit and there were some nice drawings also.

Due to the nice turnout 129 bowlers made the semis from each separate qualifying day and the Re Entry squad. They would bowl three games in hopes of making the top 32 single elim finals.

Leading the semis was ABTA regular Sosa at a big +155. He would sit out and bowl for the title. Runner-up was Alpine Tran +115. He would receive a first round bye entering the roll-off in round two. It took a good +53 for the men and +10 for the 7 guaranteed ladies to make the top 32 Single Elim Finals.

The roll-off was on. Los-ers of round one got checks of $225 in 18-32nd place. Round two losers were Tao Yang,. Talia St Angelo, Darren Garcia, Dennis Barrett, Jerry Cjang, Ariel O’ Campo, Hold-

en Au, and Daniel Cha. They got $250 finishing in 10-18th.

Round 3 had Alpine Tran, Rony Cajucom, Mike ”300” Villarrel and Henry Hoang lose out. They got $325 for finishing in 6-9th places.

Round 4 had Ed Abarca fall to Tim Tran. Steven Au was knocked out by Angela Lung where 4th and 5th and $650 each with great bowling. Angela and Tim to meet for the right to bowl for the title vs. Sosa. In this Match Tim edged the pretty newly wed 218-213 and Angela was 3rd and $1,250 with fine bowling and folks she could have won this one !! Great show Angela.

Now it is Noli vs Tran in the title game. After five frames Tran had a 17 pin lead due to a three bagger but Sosa dug dee. In frames 4-5-6-7-8 & 9 he fires X’s. Strikes to take command big time, what a performance! He wins the Event in a 232/251-211/230. To go with that a tidy $9,850. Great performance but a nice guy. Noli is the man on this night and Nice bowling by Tran also who had won five straight matches to this point. He bowled very well as did Anglea in 3rd. Just fantastic.

Tourney High Qualifiers were Alan Libao +164 (men) and Anglela Lun again?? YES +150 and they will get paid entries. How about that An-gela?? --:)

The Match Game of $3,500 was drawn by Alan Libao and a 270 was NOT Matched and with the carry-over we will

Match Series was hit at 513 by four fine people; William Garrett, Bobbie Mc Collum, Kenny “King” Kwan and Rick Hornback. They share $1,934 and $483.50 each. This is a $2.00 pot folks.

The 3-6-9 was not hit but Tony Leogrande and Mikko Miller shared the consolation Pot of which they were erro-neously paid of $50 but should have been $100 so we have an additional $25 each for these guys!! The 3-6-9 goes for $1,300 at La Habra “300” Saturday..

DeGroff’s 267/930 Tops Deaf Travel Sweeper At AMF Carter Lanes

NOTE: This was written last week but this writer was too exhausted to complete and send in for publication after having only 8 hours of sleep in two nights to get this traveling league’s 50th season final results sheets and league prize money ready for distribution. This story will resume at a later date along with the league’s special prizes results. FULLERTON — On Sunday, May 23, the 50th Anniversary So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League ended its 50th season final sweepstakes with Ken DeGroff taking a lion’s share of the sweepstakes prize money at AMF Carter Lanes. Priming himself for the coming weekend’s Pacific Coast Deaf Tournament at this same center, DeGroff with zero handicap hit 213-267-246 (726)-204 for 930 to nose out by one pin 929 made by Pablo Yoma. Tough luck Yoma whose games of 258-219-193-192 for 862 plus 67 handicap had to take every next smaller sweeps prizes after DeGroff took the larger part of each prize. The day’s other scratch 800, was 860 rolled by Darrell Stogryn with no handicap games of 211-221-210-218.

Big Win For Tim Trip in WCST Ebonite Singles at Mission Hills

Mike Rausch Captures Super Seniorby Dick Sanders

MISSION HILLS—Two new champions were crowned in the WCST Ebonite Singles, at Mission Hills Bowl, in Mission Hills, CA, last weekend. Tim Tripp (Santa Clarita) one of the newest members to join the WCST, now the age for the Regular Division bowler, has been lowered to 40 years of age, won his 2nd WCST Championship, as he has a title as WCST Ebonite All Star Doubles, Champion, bowling with Gary Markowitz at Ventura, two years ago. Mike Rausch (Costa Mesa), the Super Senior Champion (More about that in the story below in the Su-per Senior News). Tim, led the qualifying with a 2336 score for the 10 games, and by the end of Game #3, of the 6 man finals, was down by 102 pins to Mark Fisser. Going into the position round, was down 77 pins to mark. Mark had not lost any matches yet. It came down to the 10th frame, Mark got into trouble early in the game, needing to strike out to shut Tim out, but he couldn’t do it, and ended up with 181. Tim’s working on a turkey, needed at least two more strikes in the 10th frame, which he got and then a 7 count on the last ball to give him a 234 game, and with the 30 pin bonus points, he beat Mark by only 8 pins. Due to techni-cal difficulties with the lane machine, after 12 lanes had been oiled, both divisions combined to bowl together for the finals. Chuck Hansen, rolled a 300 game. Top 3:1st, Place, Tim Tripp, $750.00, 2nd Mark Fisser (Aliso Viejo), $500.00, 3rd to Chuck Hansen (N. Hills), $400.00. A total of $2,785.00 was paid out for the 21 entries of this division, a total of 7 checks. For 7tour-naments this year, $55,655.00 has been paid out, and for 305 tournaments, a total of $3,531,776.00 paid out. Our thanks to the hosting center, Mission Hills Bowl, and to Mr. Bill Monsante, the owner, and his workers. Thanks to our coverage sponsor, EBONITE INTERNATIONAL CO, and to Ben Lanne for doing the brackets.

****SUPER SENIOR NEWS****Mike Rausch, won his 1st WCST Title in the Super Senior

Division. He led the qualifying with 2366 for the 10 games, and in the 8 man finals, started out poorly, with 371 for his 1st two games, and by the end of Game #3 was down by 199 pins to

well. The only thing that was even somewhat disappointing was the attendance from a public standpoint.”

Taking part in the first such ceremony were all-time greats Marshall Holman of Medford, Ore., and Kim Terrell-Kearney of Grand Prairie, Texas, for superior performance, senior star John Handegard of Spring, Texas, in the veterans category and off-lanes bowling official Betty Barnes of Reno, Nev., for meri-torious service.

“This is just a terrific complex we have here. It’s come a long way,” said master of ceremonies Nelson Burton Jr. “My first hall of fame ceremony was in 1964 when my father (Nelson Burton Sr.) went into the Hall of Fame in Oakland, Calif. I’ve been to many, many hall of fame presentations since then but this one outdoes all of them.

“This beautiful outdoor venue is really a classy, classy thing and I think in the future we’ll have bigger and better things to come.”

Tredwell generally was pleased with how the inaugural outdoor event went and how it bodes for the future.

“The feedback I received was unanimously positive,” he said. “It’s something to build on. We hope for something bigger and better in 2011.

“In 2011, the natural tie is to the USBC Convention and Inter-national Bowl Expo that will occur just up the road in Grapevine next June. There is a built-in bowling audience that will drive considerably more traffic to the event. We haven’t made any spe-cific plans yet. I want to get a little more feedback on the specifics of how this year went, and also tie into the specific schedule of the Convention and Bowl Expo. Due to the warmer weather in late June, an outdoor ceremony would have to be in the morning. Ideally, I’d like to hold the event on a weekend to draw more public interest.”

Tredwell’s other big project of the day, the U.S. Women’s Open, also was quite a spectacle. It featured arguably the strongest field ever assembled for a woman’s stepladder finals and the players didn’t disappoint.

USBC Hall of Famer Carolyn Dorin-Ballard started the live ESPN2 stepladder finals with a 10-9 one-shot overtime win over fellow Dallas-Fort Worth resident and Team USA member Lynda Barnes of Double Oak after the two friends tied at 207. Dorin-Ballard next beat Colombian star and now Pfugerville, Texas, resident Clara Guerrero 216-192.

Dorin-Ballard then went up against the planet’s hottest player, Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J. Kulick won that match 201-176 then completed her improbable 2010 run by beating the world’s No. 2 best female, Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., 233-203.

Kulick’s year got off to a great start when she topped the world’s best male competitors in winning the PBA Tournament of Champions in January. That made her the first woman to win a national event on what formerly was an all-male tour. In late April, she earned her third USBC Queens title in El Paso, Texas. And with her U.S. Women’s Open victory two weeks later, she became the first woman to win the two major women’s titles in the same year.

“It’s unimaginable. You couldn’t write a script about this,” Kulick said after collecting the $20,000 top prize. “If it gets any better, what’s next.”

For Kulick, what immediately came next was a series of trade shows for her bowling sponsors and a never-ending quest to put her now celebrity status to use for the industry.

“I hope I can convince companies outside of bowling to join with me and by doing so helping all the other bowlers,” she said.

AMF Carter Lanes - May 16, 2010 (L-R): Kaitlin Mayall – 2nd; Wesley Low – 1st; Adam Dubia - 3rd

JAT Farm Clubby David Gordon

FULLERTON—The JAT Farm Club held its Invitational tournament a few weekends ago at AMF Carter Lanes. The field of twenty bowlers threw ten games of match play, followed by a top 5 finals. The group was doubled up on just ten lanes, but the bowlers did just fine and kept us on schedule. Our thanks to the staff and management of Carter Lanes for the accommodations and we’ll surely see you next season.

The high scores during the entire match play round is as fol-lows: Tobias Halladay 285 (tournament high game), Albert Fer-nandez 231-275-223-254, Andrew Svoren 221-248, Wesley Low 226-245-226-235-231, Adam Dubia 234-221-237-234, Brett Huntoon 237, Oscar Chan 235, John Struckman 226-234, Kait-lin Mayall 226-223, Keith Tilden 226, Michele Stephens 225, Ashley Dunn 225, Gabriella Mayfield 223, and Joe Mayo 223. Low led after five games of match play at plus 213 and after ten games at plus 392.

The top five finals then started out with 5th seed Huntoon (+178) meeting 4th seed Mayall (+189). In a close match, May-all pulls it out with a 217-201 win. Now Mayall had to go against the 3rd seed Fernandez (+277) and again with just a mark or so between them, Mayall gets by 190-175. Her next opponent was 2nd seed Dubia (+285) and one more time Mayall stays on top 205-193 to move into the final pairing. Here against top seed Low in the best of three matches, Mayall captured the first game 191-184. Low however, had seen enough of Mayall’s run to the title. In the next match, Low stepped it up 238-172 to force a third and deciding match. He then proceeded to take that game 214-193, for his fourth title of the season and sixth career JAT Farm Club title. Congratulations Wesley.

So now we’re down to our last tournament of the season this Sunday. Here we’ll find the best of the best in our Tournament of Champions. Those able to participate in this tournament are: Dara Ajimine - Darian Eves - Albert Fernandez - Assette Hernan-dez - Brett Huntoon - Lesliann Katsura - Wesley Low - Joe Mayo - Andrew Svoren - Brandon Turner. I will be trying to contact and confirm attendance with each one of you however, please feel free to contact me first at 310-665-9536 or [email protected]. Also, I may invite one or two non-title holders to complete the field. The format will not be available until Sunday morning. Hope to see you all there.

Next Tournament - Sunday, June 6JAT Tournament of Champions – AMF Woodlake BowlFarm Club/Open Division/(Senior Division Pending)Jeremy Glover Takes Invitational Title

The JAT took the lanes at AMF Carter Lanes for the 2010 Invitational with a full field of 12. After 11 games of qualify-ing, DeeRonn booker was leading the field at +641 followed by Jeremy Glover at +557 and Mark Myers at +555. With a cut to the top-8, two position rounds would determine the winner and Jeremy Glover quickly jumped to 2nd seed with a 246+30 win over leader DeeRonn Booker while Mark Myers put 229+30 on the board to stay within striking distance. In the last position game, after 12 games of match-play it was DeeRonn Booker and Jeremy Glover separated by 2 pins in a winner-take-all match while watching over their shoulder at Mark Myers who could still take the title only 17 pins back. The last game was close but an errant shot took Mark Myers out of the running and Jeremy Glover struck his way to a 219-211 win and back-to-back JAT Invitational titles. Nice bowling Jeremy!

Brent Shern wins first Senior Division InvitationalThe Senior Division’s top-7 took the lanes for the first-ever

Senior Division Invitational. After 7 games of match-play the field was cut to the top-4 with Mason Sherman, Brandon Kraye, Mike Villarreal and Brent Shern advancing to the round-robin match-play. After three more games it was red-hot Brent Shern and a blistered Mason Sherman bowling the last position round game for the title. Brent remained hot finishing up his day with a 253 win in the 11th game for the Invitational title and $225. Congratulations Brent on a nice win!

After that, Kulick will com-pete on the PBA Tour in the fall. Unfortunately that likely will be all that’s available for women until the 2011 USBC Queens as USBC is drop-ping its sponsorship of the PBA Women’s Series and U.S. Women’s Open.

“USBC has had to make many difficult decisions to re-focus our financial priorities,” Tredwell said. “Our member-ship decline has been consistent with projections, but all of our tournament entries are down, and that hurts our bottom line. Having failed to generate spon-sorship for the event, USBC is forced to add a significant amount of money to the prize fund, as well as pay for TV pro-duction. The event just wasn’t financially feasible for 2011, but we do hope it will return some time after that.”

As with so many things, it all boils down to money. In bowling’s case, it’s sponsorship dollars that will determine the future of the sport for both women and men.

“Sponsorship is the key to making any sports property work, and women’s bowling is no exception,” Tredwell said. “We are seeing the PBA struggle with sponsorship due to the economic conditions as well. The good news is that there are many key industry people that would like to see a women’s tour again. It’s just a matter of finding a business model that will work.”

Some of the women had unique ideas on what that busi-ness model could be.

“Win the mega millions,” said Stefanie Nation. “Or we need to go on Oprah (Winfrey) and plead our case.”

“We need a really rich ce-lebrity who loves the sport of bowling who wants to bankroll the tour,” Johnson said. “We need about $1 million for a good year.”

“We need sponsors outside the industry,” said Shannon Pluhowsky. “The industry does all it can so we have to go elsewhere. Maybe we go after female products like make-up. We always joke about going on Oprah or Ellen (DeGeneres).”

Does anyone out there have an in with those two powerful women?
