Welcome

But for me it is good to be near God. — Psalm 73:28

We have no greater privilege than to draw near to God. We come to him through the merit of Christ crucified. We come by the power of the Holy Spirit. And we come with God’s promise that he will draw near to us (James 4:8).

If your faith has not yet come to rest in Christ, and if God is awakening in your heart a desire to take the next step, please use one of the prayer cards in the pew rack to contact the pastor or speak to him as you leave the sanctuary. A husband and wife team will also be available at the front of the sanctuary following the service to speak with anyone interested in exploring what it means to know Jesus Christ or to join this church.

May our gracious Lord draw near to you wonderfully in this service today.

† The Invocation

† The Confession of Faith .....................................................Heidelberg Catechism, #21

Q. What is true faith?

A. True faith— created in me by the Holy Spirit through the gospel--Is not only a knowledge and conviction that everything that God reveals in his Word is true,But also a deep-rooted assurance that not only others, but I too, have had my sins forgiven, have been made right with God, and have been granted salvation. These are gifts of sheer grace earned for us by Christ.

The New Testament Lesson ......................................................................... Titus 2:11-3:8 page 1859 in the pew Bible

The Response

The grass withers and the flowers fall,

But the word of our God stands forever.

The Corporate Confession of Sin ............................................................ (Please kneel)

Most merciful Father, we have sinned against you and are guilty before you. Forgive us the sins of our tongues -

For the deception and untruthfulness in our dealings with others; for the resentments, coldness, impatience and tempers out of control.

Forgive us the sins of our eyes -

For impurity in our glances and imaginations; for hungering after more beauty, comfort, status and wealth than you have given us.

Forgive the sins of our hearts -

For hard-heartedness towards you and our neighbors; for pride, self-absorption and self-pity; and above all, for rebelling against your Lordship and doubting your love. Forgive us we pray, most merciful Father, and free us from our sin. Amen.

The Assurance of Pardoning Grace

And the LORD passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faith-fulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Exodus 34:6-7

The Offertory - Knight Without a Sword ....................................................... arr. Pfautch

When Stephen full of power and grace went forth throughout the land,he bore no shield before his face, no weapon in his hand. But only in his heart a flame and on his lips a swordwherewith he smote and overcame the foemen of the Lord.

When Stephen preached against the laws and by those laws was tried,he had no friend to plead his cause, no spokesman at his side. But only in his heart a flame and in his eyes a lightwherewith God’s daybreak to proclaim and rend the veils of night.

When Stephen, young and doomed to die fell crushed beneath the stones,he had no curse, nor vengeful cry, for those who broke his bones. But only in his heart a flame and on his lips a prayerthat God in sweet forgiveness’ name should understand and spare.

Let me, O Lord, thy cause defend, a knight without a sword;no shield I ask, no faithful friend, no vengeance, no reward. But only in my heart a flame and in my soul a dream,so that the stones of earthly shame a jeweled crown may seem.

Offering and Prayer of Dedication

Offertory - When Overwhelmed with Doubt and Fear ..........................................SmithEllen Hoover

When overwhelmed with doubts and feargreat God do thou my spirit cheer.Let not mine eyes with tears be fed,but to the rock of ages let me be led.

When storms of sin and sorrow beat, lead me to this divine retreat.Thy perfect righteousness and blood, you are my rock, my fortress, you are my God.

When guilt heavily lies on my soul, and waves of fierce temptation roll,I’d to that rock for shelter flee, and find my refuge, Lord, find it in thee.

When called the vale of death to tread, then to this rock may I be led.Nor fear to cross that gloomy sea, since thou hast conquered death, conquered for me.
