To Our Guests:Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Cityview.

Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service.

The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today.

If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. The Connection Cards, which can be found along the center aisle, are a place for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know, and to request any information from us that you might need. Pastor Dan Adamson ([email protected]) is always enthusiastic to meet you in person, as well.

For Children:Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service.

Nursery is provided during the service for children 3 years of age and younger.

Children ages four through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the opportunities and concerns portion of the service.

If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Children’s Ministry Coordinator Lynda Adamson ([email protected]).

Community Life:Before the ServiceEach week, we take time before the service to fellowship and prepare for worship. Refreshments are served starting at 9:45 AM outside of the sanctuary.

Community GroupsCommunity Groups are the primary way to get to know people at Cityview. At a Community Group, you will be invited to deepen your spiritual involvement with others. You will find a weekly opportunity to study the scripture passage for the upcoming week’s sermon and pray together.

The LiturgyPreparing in StillnessWe often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read the reflections, look over the rest of the service or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.

Call to WorshipWe need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas- and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.

Confession of SinBecause sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.

Assurance of GraceChrist has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.

The SermonSome view the sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.

CommunionCommunion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with his church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament.

Worship Through GivingBecause money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.

The BenedictionGod always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

[He] is not only a living Christ, but a Christ enthroned, a Christ in power. . . not only a Christ in power, but a Christ of everlasting sympathy, constantly. . . at the Father’s ear, and constantly pouring out intercessions for his struggling people on earth. - William Sanday and Arthur Headlam,

The wonder of the high priestly ministry of Christ lies not just in where he is, but in who he is. Where he is we may boldly go; he has opened the way to the sanctuary of heaven and the throne of grace. Prayer enters where God dwells. But the boldness of our approach rests on who he is. We know him because he has first known us, and knows us still in all our helplessness and need. - Edmund P. Clowney

God Calls Us

Call to Worship* — based on Te Deum, 4th Century hymn & Isaiah 6:3We praise you, O God, and we acclaim you as Lord.

All creation worships you, the Father everlasting. We praise you, O Christ, King of Glory, eternal Son of the Father.

You overcame the sting of death; you opened the kingdom of heaven to all who would believe.

We praise you, Holy Spirit, our Comforter and Sustainer, Advocate and Guide. You dwell among us and within us to bring us Christ’s victory.

Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, receive our praises and fill us with your love. Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.

In Christ AloneIn Christ Alone, my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song. This cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm

What heights of love! What depths of peace! When fears are stilled, when strivings ceaseMy comforter, my all in all, here in the love of Christ, I stand!

Prayer of Invocation Let us join our voices to praise the spotless Lamb, Jesus Christ, who has redeemed us from sin and death.

We, whom he has redeemed, will sing praises and shout for joy this hour.

Page 5: June 7, 2015

5

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

In Christ, the Lamb, we have redemption through his blood and the forgiveness of our sins in accordance with the riches of his grace.

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.

Let us praise him by saying: Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise! To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb we give worship this hour and forever and ever. Amen.

Hymn of Confession Father, Only in Your Power

God Cleanses Us

Prayer of Confession Triune God, we praise you as the God of love and life. Though Jesus prayed that we would be one, we confess that we fail to live in unity with each other and with you. We break our communion through hostile words and unkind actions. We long for your Spirit to heal us and to correct us. We long for you to help us experience communion with you and with each other as we gather around your Word and table. Even now, dependent on your grace, we commit ourselves to live more fully in the unity you desire. Through Christ, our Lord, Amen.

Silent ConfessionAssurance of Grace* — based on Romans 8:34; 2 Corinthians 5:17

Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven, and be at peace.

Thanks be to God!Brothers and sisters, you have heard God’s holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?

We do.

Passing of the Peace — from John 13:34Hear the teaching of Christ: “A new command I give you, that you love one another as I have loved you.” The peace of Christ be with you all.

And also with you!

Sermon — Christ Our Priest: The God We WorshipReverend Dan Adamson

Gospel Reading — Matthew 4:1-11

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

God Speaks To Us

Old Testament Reading — Psalm 110 1 The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” 2 The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! 3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours. 4 The LORD has sworn

and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth. 7 He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

Sermon Text — Hebrews 4:14-1614 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who

in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and“‘On their hands they will bear you up,lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your Godand him only shall you serve.’”

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

The God We Worship— For the next few weeks, Cityview is partnering with other Chicago-area churches in our denomination for this sermon series on the Trinity to help us understand the God we worship as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Invitation to the Lord’s Table Prayer of Thanksgiving and Consecration

The Lord be with you.And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give him thanks and praise.

God Strengthens Us

Confession of Faith — The Apostles’ CreedChristian, what do you believe?

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was cruci-fied, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Page 12: June 7, 2015

12

Words of InstitutionWe break bread in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and proclaim the mystery of the faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us;

Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Distribution of the Bread and the Cup

Prayer for those searching for truthLord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer of commitmentLord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for those struggling with sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. Amen.

CONGREGATIONAL GIVING* APRIL 2015

NO EVENING PRAYER TONIGHT There will be no evening prayer tonight. Join us next Sunday evening at Cityview Commons (841 W Monroe) at 6:00pm as we pray for each other, the church, and the world.

THE DOCTRINE OF SALVATION SATURDAY, JUNE 13 / 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM / 841 W. MONROE, UNIT B Easter is the time of the year when we celebrate the good news that God has saved us in Christ. To celebrate this truth and to increase our Christian discipleship, we will spend five weeks during Easter reflecting on the meaning of this good news. We will ask “what is the Gospel?” and “what does it mean that God saves us in Christ?” We will examine the meaning of the doctrines of justification, sanctification, and God’s election. We will ask questions about human freedom in relation to God’s predestination, aiming to deepen our understanding of the significance of God’s salvation offered to us in Christ.

PICNIC LUNCH IN SKINNER PARK - JUNE 14 Sunday lunch will be hosted as a picnic in Skinner Park on June 14. Grab your lunch at a local grocery store and join us!

FAITH & SCRIPTURE FORUM - JUNE 24, 8:00 PM This summer we’ll begin a forum series to discuss challenging questions about our faith together. Join us on June 24 to discuss Faith & Scripture and to think through the question, “Can We Trust the Bible?”.

COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR POSITION We’re looking for someone part time to take over Bonnie’s position, with hopes to have the position filled in June. The position description can be found on the Cityview website. If you are interested, or know of anyone who may be, please contact Carolyn Koonce.
