JUNE 9, 2019 SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST Reecting on God’s Word In the Middle Ages, when science seemed to be stepsister to the arts, people thought that phlogiston was what made something burnable. The more phlogiston, the more readily ammable was the way they understood physics’ inner workings. It explained why rocks did not burn and why straw readily did. Though phlogiston has long been shelved, its theory is not so far removed from how the Spirit of God burns in our lives, nor is it far from the gifts that God’s Spirit sets aame in us. If some eort of ours glows with light and heat, it may be a sign of much Spirit, sort of like phlogiston. On the other hand, if in our eort to shine there’s not even a spark, it’s quite likely that that is not where the Spirit has seled into us. It might be beer to pay aention then to some other aspect of life. The struggle is to make sure that our imagined passion and where the Spirit of God wants us to be are one and the same so that the former does not cause us to stray from the laer. How does anyone know if they are where they should be? St. Paul says that the Spirit gives each of us our own dose of divine giftedness, our own spark with which to shine, but it’s not given to us for our own glory or fun or feel-good self-image but for the good of others, for the community, for building up life. John’s Gospel suggests one other such test—whether or not we’re at peace. That, too, is the Spirit’s gift. —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. On the other hand, if in our effort to shine there’s not even a spark, it’s quite likely that that is not where the Spirit has settled into us. It might be better to pay attention then to some other aspect of life. The struggle is to make sure that our imagined passion and where the Spirit of God wants us to be are one and the same so that the former does not cause us to stray from the latter. In your quest for love, don't lose yourself along the way. While navigating through the dating scene, every woman begins to wonder: How do I know

Single women often feel left alone to find answers to their deep questions about love and intimacy. Some hang out and hook up, hoping for love. Others are afraid even to hope. At some point, every woman needs reassurance that she and her standards are not the problem. Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak

The Gift of Pentecost: The Holy Spirit

God chose the first Pentecost after Jesus Christ’s resurrection to pour out His Holy Spirit on 120 believers (Acts 1:15). Then in turn, these believers spread the “Good News,” to all nations, and after 2,000 years we are the beneficiaries of those words and of the Spirit. Pente-cost is described in Acts of the Apostles (Chapter 1 & 2) quite thor-oughly. Too see how much we may know about Pentecost, let’s take one of those fun quizzes we started a couple of months ago to see how we have received the Spirit given on that first Pentecost. Good luck and don’t peak! • What Christian holiday does the feast of Pentecost follow? a)

Memorial Day, b) Easter, c) New Year’s Day, d) Christmas • What was the name of the man who took the place of Judas in the

apostolic ministry? a) Bill b) Jordan, c) Matthias, d) Ronald • While everyone was together in a room celebrating the feast,

what sound was heard all around them? a) Fire cracking, b) Water gurgling, c) Strong driving wind, d) Children laughing

• What happened to the disciples when the Holy Spirit entered them? a) Fell into deep sleep, b) They began to cry, c) They ate like it was their last meal, d) Could speak in different languages.

• Which one of Jesus’ disciples took the opportunity to stand up and speak to the crowd of people? a) Peter, b) Thomas, c) Mat-thew, d) John

• When Christ’s disciples were gathered in the room, the Holy Spir-it, represented by what appeared over their heads? a) Tongues of fire, b) Dark clouds, c) An owl, d) Visions of sugar plumbs

• In Acts, what did Peter say would happen to those that call upon the Lord? a) They would get bread and fish to eat, b) They would see Jesus, c) The Lord would rebuke them, d) They would be saved

• Who did Peter describe in Acts as sitting at the right hand of God? a) Moses, b) Jesus, c) Saul, d) David

• According to Peter, what did God tell David would happen to his enemies? a) David would kill them, b) They would become Da-vid’s footstools, c) They would become friends, d) Lions would live with lambs

• In what city did the Pentecostal celebration take place? a) Naza-reth, b) Jerusalem, c) Mundelein, d) Bethlehem

(Good luck on the quiz – Answers below) Over 2,000 years ago the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples of Jesus. The Holy Spirit comes to us in baptism and works on us through the Grace of God. Let us always open our hearts to the Spirit, call upon the Lord and be saved. “Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful, kindle in them the

fire of your love…”

One Price, One Line. . . One Unforgettable Feast! As far back as memory allows the summer celebration on the grounds of St Mary revolved around a delicious feast! The feast took mainstage wheth-er at a summer picnic featuring roast chicken back in the 50’s, or at the long heralded Pork and Corn Roasts accented with dozens of spit-roasted pig and endless ears of fresh corn on the cob, or the more recent St Mary’s Country Fests highlight-ed by the infusion of traditional Filipino fare.

Country Fest 2019 offers the very best of our past and present, contin-uing our tradition of on-site, pit-roasted pork, fresh baked beans, pota-to salad, and fresh home-grown tomatoes complemented with crispy, succulent fresh Filipino spring rolls.

And this year, you will be happy to know the price for this magnificently nourishing meal for the ravished is still only $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10.

And here’s a little added bonus—just one meal line! That’s right! All this marvelous feast has to offer will be in front of you as you weave your way through just one meal line!

Of course, Country Fest 2019 will also have hotdogs and chips and soda, lovely wines and Tighthead beer, for an additional purchase.

So, plan to be hungry, real hungry, with all your friends and family, when you arrive at Country Fest 2019 on Sunday, August 4 between 1pm and 6pm! Come to the Fest! Enjoy the feast!

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

A good story to ponder on Pentecost:

Some years ago, a new pastor was sent to a spiritually dead church in a small Oklahoma town. The pastor spent the first week calling on as many members as possible, inviting them to the first Sunday service. But the effort failed. In spite of many calls, not a single member showed up for worship! So the pastor placed a

notice in the local paper stating that since the church was dead, the pastor was going to give it a decent, Christian burial. The funeral for the church would be held at 2 p.m. on the following Sunday. Morbidly curious, the whole town turned out for the “funeral.” In front of the pulpit there was a large casket, smothered in flowers. After the eulogy was given, the pastor invited the congregation to come forward and pay their respects to the dead church. The long line of mourners filed by. Each one peered curiously into the open casket, and then quickly turned away with a guilty, sheepish look. For inside the casket, tilted at just the right angle, was a large mirror. Each one saw their own reflection in the mirror as perhaps never before! (from “Turning Points” by Robert A. Beringer) Perhaps we need to ask ourselves: In what ways have we been a dead Church? How have we failed to reflect the Good News of Jesus Christ in our attitudes and actions? Have we become complacent with ourselves? With the status quo? Have we allowed the Spirit to set us on fire with love of the Lord and zeal for his mission? Pentecost is not just an historical event, but rather is an ongoing out-pouring of the Spirit. Pentecost happens to us now, not just with the Apostles yesterday. You and I need to be personally aflame and alive for Jesus Christ and his Church, today and every day. As we celebrate the “birthday of the Church” we should examine how well we are doing in fulfilling the mission to bring the Gospel to the world. There is so much that is good, but areas where we are falling short, too. Some aspects of the big picture can be daunting. Mass attend-ance began declining in the 1950s. Today, approximately one-third of U.S. Catholics regularly go to mass on Sundays. Studies show that 6.4% of a parish provides 80% of the volunteer hours while 6.8% pro-vides 80% of the financial support. Meanwhile, Christians have dropped to an all-time low of 71% of the U.S. population and “nones” are up to 23%. The numbers are even worse among young people. Surely we see these challenges reflected within our own families. The causes of these trends are many and complex. Likewise, there are no simple solutions. But I am convinced that the solution begins with each one of us. You and I must live like Pentecost disciples who are on fire from our personal relationship with the Lord and his other disciples. So on this great feast, we need to ponder the size and inten-sity of our fire: Am I going to mass every week in order to give praise and thanks to God? Have I arranged my life so that I devote precious time and funds to advance the mission of the Church? Do I pray every day? Am I studying and growing in the Faith? What incremental changes can I start today to get things moving in the right direction? Thankfully, the Spirit is still moving and working in our midst to give us help and inspiration. His appearance in the upper room on Pentecost was not a “one and done.” But the mission begun that day is not com-plete. And further progress depends on you and me. We need to move

St. Barnabas Bishop and Martyr Even though St. Branabas (first century) was not one of the original Twelve Apostles, he was given the title of “apostle” by St. Luke and the early Church fathers due to his apostolic en-deavors on behalf of Christianity. His original

name was Joseph, but the Apostles gave him the surname Barnabas, meaning “son of encouragement.” Together with St. Paul, he extended the missionary efforts of the Church beyond Jerusalem to Antioch, and after much success moved on to other places throughout Asia Minor. After parting ways with St. Paul over issues regarding circumcision and the Mosaic law, St. Barnabas embarked on further missionary journeys with John and Mark (see Acts of the Apostles 15:36–40. his feast day is June 11.

St. Anthony of Padua Priest and Doctor of the Church St. Anthony of Padua (1195–1231), a member of a noble Portuguese family, joined the Canons Regular of St. Augustine at a young age, but later joined the Franciscans to engage in mis-sionary work. Although his missionary dreams were halted due to illness, he received public

acclaim for his preaching style, which led to the conversion of many from heresy, earning him the title “the Hammer of the Heretics.” He had the privilege of meeting St. Francis of Assisi in person and was later elected provincial of Northern Italy. His writing is extensive, espe-cially in the area of sermons; therefore, he was named a Doctor of the Church. People invoke his name when trying to find lost items. This comes from the story in the saint’s biography when a young novice took Anthony’s Psalter, but returned it in a hurry when the angry saint appeared to him in a vision! His feast day is June 13. with greater vigor and commitment, tapping into the Spirit more deep-ly, in order to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and extend his presence through words and works of love, mercy, charity and justice. Time to kick our efforts up a notch or two. Today. As he did for the Apostles, the Spirit will enable us to break free from fear and set the world on fire! The best way to enjoy the program is to stay for the week from Sunday evening through Friday morning to experience the rhythm of prayer, study and relaxation with the community. The Women’s Center We celebrate Father’s Day during June. Many fathers feel a deep loss and sadness due to the abortion of their child. At the Women’s Center, we reduce the number of abortions by approximately 1,000 babies saved each year. We are able to do this because of the counseling, spiritual, and material help which you enable us to provide our moth-ers and fathers. SEEKING DONATIONS: We are in need of 5 infant car seat/carriers, also 4 car seats for 20 to 40 lb. (by law all car seats must be less than 7 years old), 4 exersaucers, 3 baby carriers-(front and back), 5 strollers, 2 double strollers, 4 umbrella strollers, and 3 high chairs. We need baby food (in date), Emfamil formula). Also need-ed are diapers in sizes 5 and 6 only, girls summer clothes in sizes 2 and 3, infants sleepers and onesies in sizes 6 and 9 and boys clothes, sizes 7 and 8. We are also in need of new pacifiers, baby bottles, baby wipes, baby shampoo and lotion and breast pumps. These items cannot be picked up unless accompanied by baby furniture. The fami-lies who receive these things are grateful for your generosity. For our address where you can deliver these things or if a pick-up by a volun-teer is needed, please call 773-794-1313.

Statement of Cardinal Cupich on the Passage of Senate Bill 25 The passage of Senate Bill 25, eliminating even the minimal limi-tations on abortions under previous law marks a sad moment in our history as a State. We have worked to make the case for a consistent approach to human dignity in Illinois and will continue to do so even as elected officials single out unborn persons for particular disregard. It remains our hope that Illinois will eventually distinguish itself as a safe place that welcomes not only those seeking a new life or second chance, but also the most vulnerable among us who deserve a chance at life. We are resolved to let women and families in the Chica-go area know they have alternatives to abortion. We will continue to provide help during their pregnancies and throughout their jour-ney as parents. Our ministry in Cook and Lake Counties has taught us that when teenagers in underserved communities expe-rience an unplanned pregnancy without proper support, the con-sequences for the health and well-being of mother and child can be grim. But, we have also seen that a brighter outcome is possi-ble when support is provided. Catholic Charities and its partners serve hundreds of young women and developing families every year. They nurture the mother and therefore the baby by providing classes in health and child development. They encourage the new families toward independence by providing childcare and making referrals for education, housing and employment. As a young woman served by a Catholic agency said, “It was like a second family when I came here. My Doula took me to doctors’ appointments, explaining what all the papers and proce-dures meant, how my baby was developing, the changes my body was going through and how to eat and exercise to stay healthy.” Today, her son is thriving in the organization’s early childhood program and its family support program helps her stay on track with personal goals. She will begin a bachelor’s degree program this summer. With loving encouragement, she has turned stressful circumstances into a positive, hopeful future for herself and her son. Women have a real choice when they are given the support they need to bring their children into the world and parent them, supported by a society that truly values them. We will give that support to all who seek it in the hope that by offering them a choice, we will build stronger families and a better Illinois.

A letter recently received from Catholic Charities: “Most heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful volunteers from St. Mary of the Annunciation who served dinner at the Catholic Charities Senior Supper at the Round Lake office on May 8th. Your kindness and enthusiasm is greatly appreciated and has made for a successful supper! A very special thank you to Deacon Gary for organizing this volunteer group. On account of the St. Mary’s team efforts, 16 guests enjoyed a delicious mostaccioli dinner with salad, dinner rolls, and peaches, rounded out with a bowl of vanilla ice cream and tasty Tollhouse cookies for dessert. The guests were thrilled and very appreciative as you so kindly saw to it that all had plenty of helpings. Your generosity allowed many to go home with care packages. We hope this has been a rewarding experience for the St. Mary’s volunteers. We are so grateful to have fantastic volunteers like all of you who help make these evenings such a success. Without you, they wouldn’t be possible. We look forward to your continued support and collaborative effort in our mission. Thank you for your support of the Catholic Charities Evening Supper Program.”

HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION: The mission of the Human Concerns Commission is to promote the word and manifest the love of Jesus Christ by helping those who are in need, following the principle that “whatever you do to the least of my people, you do unto me.”
