June 2020 CEO Update Thank you to one of our new residents, Ena, for getting us in touch with the Inventi Ensemble - Melbourne Recital who recently played a concert through Zoom. Ena’s Niece was playing the flute being one of the 4 soloist performances. This was live streamed and broadcasted in 5 lounge rooms, the chapel, the projector screen in Kaesler and Biar, the activity room and for the residents who preferred to watch it in their room, it was on their personal TV. Everyone had the opportunity to watch the performance. There was lots to organise and it was so worth it. We will be looking at other ways we can use this technology with streaming live services and concerts in the future. Our focus and attention over recent weeks has certainly been dominated by the global Coronavirus pandemic. As you might imagine, a great deal of effort has been invested on ensuring St Paul’s is doing all we can to protect and support residents and staff during this very challenging time. That said, our day to day activities continue as uninterrupted as possible. Hi Everyone! Wow what a start to 2020! Our big focus has been on staff training - over 600 hours of mandatory and non-mandatory training has been completed by our staff online and face to face since the beginning of the year! We are very passionate about staff career progression, supporting learning and development and most importantly, providing the best possible care and service to our residents and their family members. We have also undertaken a staff training feedback survey on all departments. A survey was sent to family representatives as well as giving all residents a hard copy to complete. The results are still being collated but at this stage the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. We welcome all feedback and are always looking for ways that we can improve our service as well as support and encourage our staff to be the best they can be. Please ensure that your feedback is constructive and respectful so that we can implement changes in a positive way. We are excited to welcome Marianne Brooke as the new Residential Aged Care Manager with over 25 years’ experience in the health care sector she brings with her a passion for providing exceptional care to our residents with a focus on continuous improvement, strong leadership skills and a plethora of knowledge Please make her feel welcome when you see her. We celebrated “Friendship Day” on February 14th with some cupcakes around being kind and supportive to each other. We then followed on with early “Harmony Day” on March 20th with oranges and delicious lentil soup and celebrated diversity and inclusion of our staff. Both of these celebrations were put on as part of our Employee Wellbeing Programme to show staff how much we appreciate them and all the work they do for St Paul’s. Please, if you get the chance to say thank you to our lovely staff it will make their day. I often think to myself what wonderful humans we have working in Aged Care and how lucky I am to be a part of an industry that helps people. This year will require us as members of the Senior Management Team to lead our teams bravely, consistently and with empathy. 2020 is bringing some challenges but as a team we are staying cohesive and positive to ensure that our residents, their families and our staff are supported, appreciated and cared for. If you’d like to know more about staff training, mentoring, recruitment or anything People and Culture, you can always contact me or make a time to come and have a chat.

Winter has officially arrived, and we have certainly had some wild and stormy

weather lately. I was lying in bed, the other night, listening to the wind roaring through the

trees and the rain lashing down on the roof and windows and I was very thankful for my warm and secure house.

Life in 2020 has been wild and unpredictable and stormy all over the world. In Australia we have been besieged by drought and bushfires, floods and now

the Covid-19 pandemic. There will be many challenges ahead as Australia works towards getting back to ‘normal’. As we bravely face the changes, there will be opportunities for new and good experiences and we will grow stronger.

God is with us in the challenges, surrounding us with his love and giving us his strength and wisdom. With God’s help we can weather the storm. We can work together to build stronger communities, a more secure society for all and a new and better ‘normal’.

WORDS OF WISDOM “For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor

things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Hymn: In heavenly love abiding, no change my

heart shall fear; and safe is such confiding, for nothing changes here. The storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid; But God is round about me, and can I be dismayed? (Anna Laetitia Waring 1823-1910)

Pastoral Information It is with a sigh of relief that we welcome the easing of some of the restrictions which were placed on us by the Covid-19 health crisis. Life has been very difficult with many of our friends and family not able to be physically near. I will be very happy to gather with a few more of my family for meals and to celebrate important events and birthdays. However, I am also very thankful that our government and authorities took ‘strict’ measures to protect the health of our community. Sometimes people don’t make wise choices for the whole of the community without ‘encouragement’ from others. If you are still feeling anxious or worried or frustrated concerning the Covid-19 pandemic or restrictions, I am available to come and visit. Just let carers, Lifestyle or nursing staff know and they will pass on a message to me. I will come as soon as possible.

Lifestyle

Greetings to all,

During these changing times and restrictions put in place, it is normal to have feelings of confusion, anxiety, uncertainty and people can become restless and concerned. I am confident that we are coming up with new ways to support you with being engaged, have purpose and find meaning in each day. We will continue to support your spiritual, religious, emotional and phycological wellbeing in changed and exciting ways. We can also set up video links to keep you connected with your family and friends and the special events that will be happening around the next couple of months. We have been able to come up with programme's in each cottage to facilitate an activity each day. Although it is a planned activity we are happy to be guided by your suggestions and requests and change what we do. If the small group activity is not for you come and check out our NEW “Bizzy Board” which has popped up in all cottages. We have stocked these with quizzes, crosswords, trivia, riddles and much more interesting and challenging activities. Try them yourself or sit with a fellow resident and complete them together. There is also an activity trolley in each cottage with a variety of activities that you can do independently or use in small groups in your cottages. These will be stocked with art work, music, movies, table games, cards and many more will be added and changed throughout the weeks. We welcome all feedback and suggestions of what you would like added or removed as this is for you. Cookbook fundraiser update - The last Cookbook meeting has come up with a plan to ask staff to be involved in providing their home cooked recipes. Hopefully we will get enough and begin to bring the project closer to finishing. I am excited to try out your recipe's. It is safe to say we can never predict what our program will look like due to the variety of changes that come our way and which are out of our control. Be assured that although changes happen we will endeavour to keep you all busy and entertained with fun, happy and meaningful activities. A very thoughtful resident asked how we could fundraise for the bushfire relief that has affected so many Australians as well as locally. We put together a fundraising afternoon tea with many sweet and savoury delights. Hayley who works in the Kaffe’ donated all the cupcakes and savoury pinwheels which went down a treat and our helpful catering team provided sandwiches and biscuits. We are happy to announce that we raised $127.25 which will be donated to “Blaze Aid”. They camp in affected areas and rebuild fences and small structures. The camp we our donations will go towards is the Lobethal camp. Their slogan which says it all is ‘Not just rebuilding fences, but helping rebuild lives’ It was an honour to help support residents with making a very worthwhile contribution. It was a great afternoon and no-one left hungry. Take care and keep having fun Connie Mira Lifestyle Coordinator

I grew up in colonel Light gardens and at 18 became a primary school teacher. My first appointment was in the Barossa. My faith was strong and I met my future husband in a local church. After 14 years of marriage we shifted to the Adelaide Hills and had four children (1 son and 3 daughters). We also decided to adopt a girl from Korea. Once I had a family I did not teach but supplemented our income by being involved in food services, fruit picking and cleaning houses. For a time I assisted members with child rearing. We are currently living in mt Barker on a small allotment and are keen gardeners. I walk to improve my health and I also enjoy reading and doing jigsaw puzzles. My husband and I enjoy being involved in church activities. We are hospitable and like spending time with friends and neighbours.

Feedback, Comments and Complaints

Hi, St Paul's Lutheran Homes Hahndorf is committed to providing quality care to our residents. Therefore, it is important that we are made aware of feedback about the care and services we provide - compliments, complaints and suggestions. Residents, visitors and staff can comment on the service received in a number of ways, as follows: Care to Comment forms are located throughout the facility and are invaluable in tracking how our facility

and services are performing. Compliments affirm what it is that we are doing well. Complaints and Suggestions are areas where we

could improve or do things better. Anyone can complete a form for a resident if needed, and can also remain anonymous, however this may

hinder an investigation and the complainant will not be made aware of the outcome. If a resident or visitor chooses to complain externally, they can contact: Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission Ph 1800 951 822, or Aged Rights Advocacy Service Ph 1800 700 600 Brochures for both of these are available in our Kaffe. If you need an interpreter, services can be accessed through TIS National on Ph 131 450. For residents that have trouble hearing or speaking, the National Relay Service Ph 1800 555 660 can assist in a variety of ways. In the past month we have received 59 compliments, and year-to-date there have been 284 – which is a 78% increase from the same period in 2019. Our Catering and Lifestyle teams continue to have the most positive comments recorded. Some of the comments have been – caring staff of palliative resident, thanks to the CEO for ongoing communications, terrific staff, lovely soup and dumplings, flexibility of visiting times and clean facility. There were 13 complaints recorded in May – five each for Catering and Care, two for Staff and one for Administration. Some of those complaints were – visitor restrictions, cold food, concern about another resident and resident care needs not being attended to. Year-to-date we have received 70 complaints. There were 4 suggestions in May including an extension to a pathway in Nitschke and residents being able to pull back their sheer curtains to enjoy a clearer view from their window. Please contact Charlene Leckey via [email protected] or 8398 8600 if you require further information about St Paul’s Feedback mechanism.

Retirement Village Vacancies

Retirement Living has not been isolated from the effects associated with COVID-19. In the past 3 months there has been a very dramatic change in the day-to-day operations of St Paul’s villages, namely the introduction of social distancing measures along with the recommendation that over 70’s (or 60 with existing health conditions) self-isolate at home to the maximum extent practicable. Our Property Services team have kept up with works required at units, albeit in a COVID-19 social distancing manner. The village social activities such as bus trips and coffee club have been indefinitely suspended as the risks of contracting COVID-19 cannot be mitigated. Whilst there have been challenges, there has been an overwhelmingly positive vibe from those residents that I have been in contact with. The introduction of a Book Swap/Share and Puzzle cupboard has been well received and certainly provided some relief for residents looking to fill the extra hours in their days. As restrictions begin to ease, we are re-introducing our ‘Getting to Know You’ morning tea and weekly coffee catch up, amid much excitement from residents looking to get back to some normality.
