2013 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Four local businesses were recipients of the Lee’s Summit Chamber Res in Motus (Business in Motion) Business of the Year awards at the monthly membership luncheon on May 17.

The four award winners include: Lee’s Summit Social Services (nonprofit with less than 20 employees); Cinematic Visions (five or less employees); Lee’s Summit Journal (6-20 employees); and MCC-Longview (more than 20 employees).

Sanctimonia – Lee’s Summit Social Services is a full service not-for-profit agency serving low income individuals and

Vegrandis – Cinematic Visions, home of nationally syndicated TV show “Just Down the Road,” is an award-winning, professional, start-to-finish multi-media production company, servicing consumer and corporate clients alike

Make Money and Help a Local Nonprofit

The Lee’s Summit Chamber is proud to offer a new program that not only benefits our members but also Lee’s Summit nonprofits. Deals Lee’s Summit, powered by YipDeals, offers businesses the chance to gain new customers and exposure by selling deals.

This is not Groupon. In the Chamber’s opinion, this is much better than Groupon or similar programs. Often times other programs require businesses to offer extreme discounts, with little to no money going back to the actual businesses themselves.

Here is what you need to know about Deals Lee’s Summit:

• 64% of every deal sold instantly goes back to the merchant through a PayPal account

• 12% of every deal sold goes to a local school, church or other nonprofit chosen by the buyer (if you are a nonprofit, make sure to contact Anthony so that you can be listed as an option!)

• 2% of each deal goes back to the Chamber to help support programming

• There is zero risk or upfront costs for businesses to get started

• Participants set their own terms - how many, when and frequency

• Measurable results• The Chamber will promote each deal on Deals

Lee’s Summit through social media and emails• Members will be encouraged to ‘share’ the

information with their contacts, helping spread the word for other members businesses

Spencer Named to Chamber Board of Directors

Want to see if Deals Lee’s Summit can help your business? Remember there is no start up fee.

Contact Chamber member Anthony Gordon with Local Success Marketing at 816.875.3491 or [email protected].

Kelly Spencer was recently named to the Chamber’s Board of Directors. She is employed by Bank of Lee’s Summit and has been an active volunteer of the Chamber for several years. Most recently, Spencer served a 3-year-term as a coordinator for the Chamber’s Leadership Lee’s Summit program.

Spencer will serve for the remainder of Daren Fristoe’s term. Fristoe recently resigned from the Board after taking a position with the City of Lee’s Summit.

Applications are now being accepted for the class of 2013-2014. Copies of the application are available by contacting Chrissy Symes at 816.524.2424 or [email protected]. Tuition to attend the program is $595 for Chamber members; $825 for non-members. Registration fee covers materials and workshops. Tuition is payable by the individual, the employer or the sponsoring organization and is non-refundable. Completed applications should be mailed to the Chamber office, 220 SE Main Street, Lee’s Summit, MO, 64063, no later than August 2, 2013.

A delegation from four Chambers of Commerce representing Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, South Kansas City and Grandview traveled to Washington, DC to discuss issues important to businesses within our respective communities. The delegation composed of community business leaders and chamber executives met with US Senators Roy Blunt, Claire McCaskill, US House of Representatives’ Emanuel Cleaver (pictured above), Vicki Hartzler and Sam Graves. Four major issues affecting the business community were the focus of the trip - business taxation and entitlement reform, reliable and secure infrastructure, health care and transportation.

“The Congressional lawmakers were attentive and seemed appreciative of the testimonials being offered by the Chamber’s spokespersons and genuinely interested in suggestions offered to address the concerns raised during the visits,” said Lee’s Summit Chamber Vice President Mark Dickey.

The delegation also had the opportunity to host a luncheon at the US Chamber of CommerceHeadquarters, directly across from the White House, to confer with top policy and public affairs personnel for briefings on the important issues facing the nation’s business community.

After conducting a briefing of the delegation, it was clear that Congress and the Administration face many weighty issues that have a profound impact on the country’s economic future. As a result a strategic, long-range solutions are needed a to achieve bipartisan support.

MCC-Longview Announces New President

Metropolitan Community College has named Kirk A. Nooks, Ed.D., as the new president of the college’s Longview campus.

Nooks replaces Fred Grogan, Ph.D., who has been president of MCC-Longview for 28 years and will retire at the end of June.

Nooks comes to MCC-Longview from Georgia Highlands College,

where he currently serves as both campus dean for the college’s Marietta campus and executive liaison for diversity initiatives. He has been at GHC for four years, during which time campus enrollment has increased by over 35%, academic and student services have been

expanded and the academic and office space allocation has more than doubled. Additionally, the Marietta campus has implemented a multi-year strategic plan that resulted in an increase in the number of campus graduates and the number of students persisting from semester to semester.

Nooks said he chose to come to MCC-Longview because of the strong reputation of MCC and of the Longview campus.

“I am honored to serve as the next President of Metropolitan Community College-Longview,” he said. “During the search process, it was clear that the faculty, staff and students expressed a deep pride in the history of the institution. I am looking forward to continue building on such a steady foundation.”

MC Power Companies Breaks Ground on Solar Power Plant

May 14, 2013Contact: Loren WilliamsonPhone: 816-251-4700Email: [email protected] After nearly two years of planning, design and securing the best possible support team, MC Power Companies, Inc is pleased to announce that construction on the “Butler Solar Power Farm” will commence this spring with the “ground breaking” set for May 21. Full operation of the Solar Farm will be reached before the end of 2013. All of the power generated will be consumed by the citizens and businesses of Butler, Missouri.

At slightly over 3 Megawatts, the Butler Solar Farm will be one of the largest solar power plants in the five state region. Like many municipalities in Missouri, Butler has long owned its electric utility and is a member of the Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission (MJMEUC) which is a member of the Missouri Public Utility Alliance (MPUA). MPUA, MJMEUC, the City of Butler and MC Power have worked through thousands of com-plex details to bring this impressive renewable energy production facility to west central Missouri.

With solar panels produced by aleo solar North America, Inc. and state-of-the-art components to convert the energy to match the current and voltage on the Butler power grid, the citizens of Butler will enjoy reduced power production costs and low maintenance costs for at least 25 years. Great Western Bank, another key member of the team, brought its excellent prior experience with solar power projects to help make this project successful. All members of the Project Team have collaborated to bring this innovative project that will control energy cost, increase employment and help the environment through clean energy production to Butler, Mis-souri.

“MC Power Companies would like to thank the Butler City Council and City Administrator, MJMUEC, MPUA, Great Western Bank, aleo solar, Gibbons Drake & Scott, and everyone who helped bring this exciting project into reality,” said Tony Ross, CEO.

Butler, known as the “electric city” was the first city west of the Mississippi to have electric service. This project brings solar technology to the oldest, continuously operated, municipal utility in the United States.
