22Respectfully,
Nicholas R. JohnsenDirector of Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation
June is a magnifi-cent time of the year here in cen-tral Texas. Sum-mer activities are really gearing up in earnest and the weather gen-erally cooperates for us. We would love to see you out taking advantage of all of our out-door activities and this month’s “Hood Happenings” lists plenty to get you off of your sofa and outdoors. You just have to make a selection and get the Family out and moving-you’ll all have fun! We can’t forget Father’s Day or the historical significance of the launching of the Normandy Invasion during World War II. I can’t help but link the two together as my Father fought in WWII as a Marine in the Pacific. I can’t say how that experience likely changed him, but I do know he never talked about it. He also hated certain dry foods like powdered milk. Today, our Army has learned that not talking about these experiences is not helpful, and has implemented a plethora of programs to assist every returning Soldier from his respective combat theater: Within DFM-WR we have Military Family Life Con-sultants (MFLCs) who can talk to Sol-diers or Family members without case history being recorded. The MFLCs still have the requirement to notify in a threat to self or others exist, or if the member needs more in depth assis-tance. They are a wonderful resource and can be found at the Resiliency Campus. Use them or the other great programs offered at the Resiliency Cam-pus to make a difference in your life.

Voices of the Great Place
Our Facebook fans shared ideas for chil-dren to connect with their deployed father this Father’s Day.
Every day that he is gone they write on a small strip of paper what they did that day then the date and make a chain out of it. When he gets home he sees what they did the whole time he was gone and how much they love him.
-Loretta Vic Mask
We took a pillowcase, ironed on a transfer photo of me and the kids, stamped our handprints and wrote in washable paint why we love him. We also made him a Build-a-Bear with a Father’s Day message recording from all of us that he could listen to anytime he was homesick. It was a fun care package to put together!
-Crystal Blattel
You can take a tissue box and decorate it and then have your kids write down little sayings and words of encouragement on pieces of paper. Ev-ery time your spouse is feeling down, he/she can pull out a piece of paper and read it! The more pieces of paper in the tissue box, the better!

Arts&Crafts
f you have a knack for arts and crafts, this is the time for you to get recognized! The 2010 Army Arts and Crafts Contest is here and looking for
talented artists like you. The Army Arts and Crafts Contest is an annual, ju-ried competition of two and three dimensional artwork within the following categories: ceramics, drawings, wood, prints, fibers & textiles, water-based painting, glass, oil-based painting, metals & jewelry, mixed media-2D and mixed media-3D. Judging is divided into two separate groups based upon whether the artist is a novice or an accomplished artist/artisan. So where do you fit in? The official definition of a novice is individuals whose art skills have not been gained in formal education leading to college cred-it or a college degree. The definition of an accom-plished artist is individuals who have gained skills and knowledge through formal courses leading to credit in college or art schools, or received awards in professional competitions. The contest is open to all authorized Family and MWR patrons, which includes active duty, reserves,
guard, retirees, DoD civilians with valid military government identification cards or immediate Fam-ily Members. Each eligible patron may submit as many as three works per category to the contest and all submissions must be the original work of the en-trant, completed within 24 months from the start of the current contest year. So how do you enter? Sign in using your AKO username and password at https://artscrafts.fmwrc.army.mil. Once logged in, you can read the full list of contest rules or even browse past winner’s art-work in the Gallery of Winners. The first thing you will need to do is create a profile and then you will be able to submit your entries. You will need to up-load a photo of your artwork so make sure you have a high-quality photo on hand for each entry. The deadline to enter is July 5. If you run across any problems when entering the contest or you have any questions, feel free to stop by or call Apache Arts & Crafts. Apache is located at 761st Tank Battalion and 62nd Street and can be reached at 254-532-2586. s

Making things more enticing is that you won’t have to travel far to experience what Central Texans have proclaimed as the best Fourth of July Celebration in the area. The official beginning of Freedom Fest is 1 pm on Sunday, July 4 and the celebration will continue through the conclusion of the fireworks at 10 pm. This year’s celebration has something for everyone, including crowd favorites – FREE carnival rides, FREE laser tag and tons of other interactive activities. Also included in this year’s attractions are a miniature stock car race, concessions, arts and crafts vendors, a military salute to the nation and much, much more. Everything is FREE, excluding the arts and crafts vendors, concessions and carnival games.
And for those who enjoy entertaining musical acts, this Fourth of July Fort Hood will rock with Seether headlining the entertainment. This talented South African hard-rock group is coming to Fort Hood before heading back to their homeland to perform at the closing ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Concluding this year’s party is an extravagant 30-minute fireworks presentation sure to light up the Central Texas sky, which begins at 9:30 pm. eads up single Soldiers! On June 11, get ready for Single Soldiers’ Day 2010, a day
of fun in the sun at Belton Lake Outdoor Recre-ation Area hosted by Better Opportunities for Sin-gle Soldiers. This is our biggest annual event where we show you that we appreciate all the hard work you do in the military and recognize all the sacri-fices that you make. This day is designed to boost morale across the board and build esprit de corps. This is also a great way for single Soldiers to meet other single Soldiers, win all kinds of prizes and most importantly relax and have fun! Did I men-tion that absolutely everything is FREE? We’ll have a beach volleyball tournament, soft-ball tournament, water balloon toss, relay races, a limbo contest as well as a tug-o-war… and that’s just to start! Don’t forget about the live entertain-ment and FREE food. We want you to know that we are here for you and you will always be our number one priority! This year’s entertainment line-up is sure to make all those unable to attend green with envy.
The emcee will be comedian Marcus. His high energy, rock n’ roll based comedy captured the attention of millions of Americans when he was featured on the 2008 edition of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”. The rock band 7 Years Today (led by a former Soldier) offers a fusion of hard rock from both modern and past eras, along with blues-influenced guitar solos and a rhythm section forming a driving pulse. Sit back, soak in the sun and nod your head to the smooth hip-hop tracks by Miami’s own City of God and D.C.-based duo Fly Gypsy – one of the hottest new names in hip-hop. Lastly, Texas based punk-rock group Junior will be spicing things up along with the Hooters calendar girls who will be participating in events throughout the day. Enjoy your time at Single Soldiers’ Day 2010 and remember BOSS is your gateway to great leisure and recreation activities, quality of life and com-munity service. bout an hour from Fort Hood is one of my favorite Texas towns, Austin. I fell in love with this city while attending college there and go back every chance I get. Austin has it all- fabulous food, live music, beautiful outdoor activities, great shopping and SO much to do. The best part is that
you can spend a summer day in Austin and have a blast... for $5 or less. Here’s the lowdown from a [former] local:
Explore Austin... For or Less!
Barton Springs Brisk spring waters and beautiful greenery make this free Austin hotspot a local favorite. Wheth-er you come to swim, hike, rock climb, people watch or picnic, Barton Springs is sure to please all ages.
Mount BonnellFor some of the best views in the city, climb the 102 steps to the top of Mount Bonnell. Don’t let the name scare you, it really isn’t much of a mountain. In a mere 10 minutes, you’ll be at the top taking in beautiful sites. Don’t forget your camera!
Congress Bridge BatsMore than 1.5 million bats live under the Con-gress Avenue bridge. Yes, you read that correct-ly- 1.5 million! Every evening at sunset, the bats emerge in a spectacle that continuously draws crowds. Watch from the bridge or pick a spot of green grass on nearby Town Lake for a more distant view. The Congress bridge is located just south of downtown Austin and over Town Lake on Congress Avenue.
Blues on the GreenBeginning in early June and continuing through August, Blues on the Green features notable blues artists live on stage... for free! Bring a blan-ket, picnic and friends to catch the shows at Waterloo Park. For more information, check out www.kgsr.com.
Orchestra in the ParkThe Austin Symphony Orchestra performs free Sunday evening shows, June through August at the park in front of the Long Center. Music varies from jazz to classical to pops selections and film scores. For more information, check out www.austinsymphony.org.
Texas State CapitolAustin is, of course, home to the Texas state capitol and if you haven’t seen the capitol build-ing in person, you’re missing out. The gorgeous structure is open daily for free tours. Whether you’re a native Texan or just here temporarily, the beauty of this building can truly be appreci-ated by all.
Movies in Deep Eddy PoolSpend Sunday nights cooling off and catching a flick while floating in Deep Eddy Pool. The spring-fed pool is tons of fun, but add a huge screen and Family-favorite films and you’ve got a hit. Films begin at dusk. For a complete film schedule, check out Deep Eddy Pool’s page on the City of Austin website, www.ci.austin.tx.us.
Live Oak BreweryLive Oak Brewery is located in Central East Aus-tin, off 5th Street. Spend a Saturday afternoon taking a free tour of the brewery hand-built by Austin natives... and yes, beer is included in the FREE price! You must be 21 to tour. For more in-formation, head to www.liveoakbrewery.com.

S ummer is finally upon us and the pools and Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area have never been busier. After that miserable win-
ter season, who can blame people for wanting to go out and enjoy the warmth of the Texas sun? Of course, the average beach comber does not want to be in his bathing suit in the Texas sun without what many would consider a presentable body. Fort Hood’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation has the per-fect solution, with two great opportunities to maintain that perfect physique this summer – the Duathlon and the Freedom Fest 5K Run/Walk. “A duathlon?” you may ask yourself. Who has time to train for one of those and where on Fort Hood could they even accommodate a duathlon? Well, the answer is quite simple but yet complex at the same time. Training for a duathlon definitely does take time, but if you plan on living a long life and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the training is not very long at all in the scheme of things. Exercise boosts brainpower; movement melts away stress and gives you energy.
That is just a small sampling of what training and sub-sequently participating in this duathlon will do for interested registrants. The Duathlon, which is the third and final race of the Great Place Amazing Race Spring Series, begins at the Ironhorse Physical Fitness Center, June 19 at 8 am. The race consists of a 15-mile bike ride and a 5K run with trophies awarded for the best overall male and female times. Medals will also be awarded to 1st – 3rd place finishers, in each age category. After the Duathlon has enticed you to enter into more athletic competitions, don’t forget to register for the Freedom Fest 5K Run/Walk, July 3 at 8 am. The Freedom Fest 5K Run/Walk is an annual run geared to kick off our annual Independence Day celebration on Fort Hood. Registration for both races is free and open to the public. Participants may stop by any of the Fort Hood physical fitness centers now through the day of the race or log on to www.hoodmwr.com to register. For more information, call 254-285-5459. s

Summer Safety Tips for Children
t’s that time again, when the school year has come to an end. It’s the one time of the year when children spend the most time home
alone and outdoors at play. The following are a list of tips from Army Community Service Family Advocacy Child Safety Program that parents and can use to help ensure their children are safe through-out the summer.Home Alone SafetyA growing number of households use personal cell phones as their primary phone, therefore a child should have a working phone at home to use in case of an emergency. Children should also be educat-ed on the dangers of answering the door or phone while home alone, and leaving the home to play outside when their parents are away. Fort Hood has a Home Alone Policy in place for all on-post hous-ing residents. For more information, call the on-post housing office at 254-287-3704.Internet SafetyParents should ensure that the computer is placed in a family room, kitchen, or other central location and schedule times when children are allowed to access the computer and the internet. Parents should know their child’s passwords and screen names. Lastly, setting parental controls can serve as a great tool for parents in keeping their children cyber safe.Bike and Wheels SafetyHelmets reduce the risk of brain injury by 88 percent. All bicycle riders are required to wear a helmet when

riding a bicycle on Fort Hood. If a child is on wheels, they need a helmet. This includes bicycles, in-line skates, and skate boards. Elbow pads, knees pads and wrist guards provide added protection. It is also impor-tant for children to know traffic safety rules.Water SafetyTeach children never to go in the water unless a grown-up is watching them. Teens and adults should always swim with a buddy. If you own a pool or spa, be sure it is surrounded on all four sides by a five foot fence that prevents children from getting over, under or through it. Learn CPR and keep rescue equip-ment, a telephone and emergency numbers poolside. Multiple drains minimize the suction of any one drain, reducing risk of death or injury. Install a door alarm, a window alarm or both to alert you if a child wanders into the pool area unsupervised. Children should wear U.S. Coast Guard life jackets when in or near open bodies of water. Travel SafetyThe State of Texas recently passed a new booster seat law that requires children who are under the age of eight and not yet 4 feet 9 inches tall to ride in a boost-er seat. The safest place in a vehicle for young riders is in the back seat. Seat belts should be worn by all riders to include teenagers and adults. For more information on the Child Safety Program and its services, call 254-287-6505. To report suspected child abuse and neglect call Fort Hood’s Abuse Hotline at 254-287-CARE (2273).s

s your child receiving child care in one of our quality Child, Youth & School Services programs and not feeling well enough to attend their regular child care program but you have an important meeting today at work? What is a parent to do? If you have children, we’ve all encountered this difficult situation. Fort Hood Child, Youth & School
Services has just the answer for a busy parent such as yourself -- the Mildly Ill Care Home! The Mildly Ill Care Home is a home for children who are too ill to use their regular Child, Youth & School Services child care program. Tem-porary care will be provided by a trained Family Child Care Provid-er / Mildly Ill Care Provider. The Mildly Ill Care Provider currently holds a Child Development Associate credential. The Mildly Ill Care Home allows parents to go to work know-ing that their child can continue to receive quality care while recuperating from their illness or injury, recovering from sur-gery or other medical procedures. Care will be provided in a safe, comfortable and caring environment. Types of illnesses cared for are illnesses with known contagious periods such as chicken pox, strep throat, mumps, measles or children who are too ill to participate in scheduled daily activities. Children who are currently enrolled in a regular Child,
Youth & School Services program in a child development cen-ter, School Age Services program, or Family Child Care Home, ages 4 weeks - 12 years, are eligible. Hours of operation are from 5:30 am -6:00 pm, Monday-Friday. There is no additional cost to the parent for using the Mildly Ill Care Home if their child currently attends one of the Child, Youth & School Services programs mentioned above. Children are accepted by appoint-ment and on a space available basis. In some cases approval must be received from the Family Child Care Director. Parents must have obtained documentation from their physician stating their di-agnosis and written instructions on how to care for the child while attending the Mildly Ill Care Home. Information and enrollment packets can be picked up at your child care site. For any additional questions or to learn more about this innovative program, please call the Family Child Care office at 254-288-3190. s

BLORA

ummer is now in full swing and I’m willing to bet you are itching to get outdoors and have some fun. Well, I’ve got the scoop on how to en-
joy a perfect summer day out at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area. Start your day off by packing the supplies for the day. Pack a cooler with lots of bottled water and drinks to last you through the day. Don’t forget to bring beach towels, lounge chairs, maybe a beach umbrella, sun-screen, swimsuits, a change of clothes and any other essential supplies for your Family. You’ll also need food so pack up hot dogs, buns, condiments, chips, fruit and any other snacks that your Family enjoys. Oh and don’t forget charcoal, lighter fluid and a lighter so you can make use of the grill. Load up the car and head out to BLORA in the mid-morning hours. It’s only about a 20-30 minute drive from the Killeen area. Once you’ve arrived, stake out a nice spot along Sierra Beach where you can easily ac-cess a grill and maybe even a picnic table. Go for a dip in the lake or just lay in the sun (with sunscreen on,
of course). There are also two waterslides and a Kid’s Wash to keep the kids entertained for a couple hours. When the tummies start to growl, crank up the grill and put the hot dogs on. Have a leisurely lunch and refuel the energy tanks, because there is a lot more fun to come! Once you’ve gotten your fill of the water, there are several options on how to spend the rest of your day. You could rent bicycles and take a spin around the park on one of the mountain bike trails, take a fam-ily hike on one of the walking trails, head over to the stables for a little horseback ride, do a little fishing on the pier or even play a fierce game of paintball. There are plenty more activities to enjoy but these are just a few of my favorites! After a full day of outdoor fun like this one, it’s time to head home and get some rest. If you can’t imag-ine spending just one day at BLORA, plan ahead to rent a camping space or a cottage and stay the night! I hope you enjoyed your “perfect summer day at BLORA” as much as I did! s
