In large kitchens, chefs normally work as part of a team looking after one food area, such as desserts or vegetables. The head chef runs the entire

kitchen, designing the menus and managing budgets and staff.

To become a chef, you will need to have a keen interest in food and cooking, and be able to do several tasks at once. You’ll also need creativity

and imagination for food presentation.

The Michelin Star is an award given to the best restaurants in the world. Food critics visit restaurants in secret to try the food and award 0 – 3 stars.

Depending on whether you train on the job or study at college or university, it could take between 5 and 10 years to become a chef.

A chef could find work anywhere in the UK and in every area of the industry, such as hotels, restaurants, in education, the NHS and the Armed

Forces. Wherever people need to eat, there will be a need for a chef.
