The program provides students who transferred from CollinCollege to TWU before completing their associate degreean opportunity to earn the degree. While a student atTWU, university credits can be transferred back to CollinCollege. “This partnership will be a great benefit to students,” saidDr. Brenda Kihl, vice president of Academic andInstitutional Effectiveness at Collin College. “With the helpof TWU, former Collin College students will be notified ofthe reverse transfer program and awarded the associatedegree they earned after transferring.” “We at TWU are delighted to have this reverse-transferpartnership with Collin College,” said Dr. Robert Neely,TWU provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Thisagreement is clearly in the best interest of those studentscoming to TWU from Collin College, and but one exampleof the kinds of collaborations that strengthen the nature ofhigher education in Texas.” Students will have to meet Collin College degreerequirements and agree to the sharing of their transcripts. TWU and Collin College also have a pre-admissionpartnership, which allows Collin College students to gainaccess to university advisors, scholarship opportunities andother perks while finishing their core curriculum. Collin College EMS class No. 10 at the Texas Special Olympics overMemorial Day weekend.

By Loyd F. CampbellSpecial Contributor

The Collin College EMS department was recently given aunique and valuable opportunity to give back to ourcommunity when we were invited to assist as medical staffat this year’s Texas Special Olympics at The University ofTexas at Arlington Memorial Day weekend. In March, we were contacted by Chief Russell “Rusty”Wilson of the Irving Fire Department. Each year ChiefWilson is in charge of the medical staff for the event, andhe sends out a call to local hospitals, fire departments andcolleges for anyone interested in volunteering. We recognized this as an opportunity to do somethingworthwhile for our community and, at the same time, garner a valuable lesson in working with a segment of ourpopulation that we may not normally come in contact with. On the morning of the first day, Chief Wilson said, “Ifyou’re out here for more than 10 minutes and you don’tstep back and re-evaluate your priorities, you probablyneed counseling.” "I think working in this kind of event makes you a betterparamedic since you're with patients who may notcommunicate as easily as your average patient. It teachesyou how to be patient and work to find better ways tocommunicate with people when they need you to,” YuriOmas, of paramedic class No. 11, said. "This was a greatexperience and I'm definitely going to do it again."

In working with the participants, it soon became apparentthat the level of dedication they had to their sport easilymatched that of any other athlete around, professional orotherwise, and whether they won the event or not, theyrapidly won the respect and hearts of those around them. The athletes participated in a variety of track and fieldevents such as running and shot-put, but also basketball, tennis, cycling and a softball throw for distance. "From what I could tell from the competitors, they had moreheart than I could ever have. Their love for competing andshowing the crowd a great game was all that mattered,”said Zachary Stringer of class No. 10. “All I know is that I'mvery blessed to have been part of such an event. As we allworked together we saw great things happen and left moregrateful than when we arrived." From a medical staff standpoint, the event brought someunusual challenges. Many of the athletes have chronicillnesses that are easily aggravated by extreme conditions,so they walk a fine line between giving it their all and notsuccumbing to the heat or other stresses of the day. This year, Collin College paramedic class No. 10volunteered on Friday, and paramedic class No. 11attended on Saturday. Although there were a few incidentsthat required medical attention, (by and large heat-related),at the end of it all the athletes and paramedic studentsalike were all smiles. "It was a great chance to work with so many experiencedfirefighters and paramedics, but it was more important toget to be around a group we don't get around much. Youlearn to appreciate people for who they are and not bejudgmental,” said Michelle Guerrero of class No. 11. Loyd F. Campbell is an EMS clinical coordinator andprofessor at Collin College. A turn of the shrew: SummerShakespeare turns 10

Collin College will present the10th annual SummerShakespeare production witha 1950s version of TheTaming of the Shrew,Tuesday, June 28-Sunday,July 3, at the John AnthonyTheatre. The Taming of the Shrew willbe directed by Joanne Zipay, founder and artistic director ofthe Judith ShakespeareCompany in New York City. She will also serve as a visiting professor at Collin Collegeduring the summer course Shakespeare on Stage. The John Anthony Theatre is located on the Spring CreekCampus, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano. “We wanted to do Shrew because it's a huge favorite ofactors and audiences alike. It’s full of fun and fantasticalcharacters, and it is perfect for a 10th anniversarycelebration of a successful and ongoing Shakespearerepertory program. It’s going to be a blast,” Zipay said, noting that this production will still have the feel and look ofthe Italy where Shakespeare set his play, but will alsomake use of the styles and attitudes of the 50's in Americato bring the story and the characters closer to home foraudiences here in Texas. The Taming of the Shrew is the story of strong-willedKatherine, who leaves men quaking in fear -- but heryounger sister Bianca has many adoring suitors. Daddydeclares that no one may marry Bianca until a husband isfound for Kate, “the shrew.” Petruchio, boastful andcompetitive, takes on a challenge by the suitors to winKate and to “tame” her. When the headstrong Kate andPetruchio meet, sparks of all kinds fly, and they are quicklymarried in a hilarious ceremony. Petruchio and Kateundergo a strenuous “taming” process at his countryestate, and at Bianca’s wedding, demonstrate to all theguests how they have both been changed. The setting of the play might be in the 1950s, but it’s alsothe vision of Zipay, “to have women playing a number ofmen's roles because we have so many talented actresses

Fire academy takes pride in its legacy

Collin College Fire Academy instructors -- and former students -- ThomasKosten and Matt Uppole.

Collin College's Fire Academy graduated class No. 50recently. This is the second of a two-part series about thepast and present of the program.

Pat McAuliff, director of the Collin College Fire Academy, called his instructors and staff the secret to his success.

"The guys I hired were passionate about sharing theirknowledge with brand-new recruits. I recognized that andthat became my standard for who I was going to include inour staff from that point forward," he said.

As it turns out, quite a few of these instructors are, in fact, former students, coming back to the classrooms andtraining areas to share their passion instilled in them in thesame places.

Matt Uppole was in class No. 1 in 1991. He hasn't reallyleft. He's currently a battalion chief with the Coppell FireDepartment. He started at the Collin College Fire Academyin 1990 right out of high school.

Due to his schedule, Uppole was apt to stay at the collegeall day either in class or in the library. He said McAuliffasked if he wanted to be student assistant. After graduatingwith his associate degree in 1993, Uppole was kept on asa field technician, helping where he could filling up oxygenbottles and hauling students and equipment out of town forexercises.

"It keeps me grounded," Uppole said. "I enjoy giving back.I had a lot of people in my career give me advice. By

getting to teach the recruits to work, I still have an impactin cities all over north Texas."

Thomas Kosten is a 28-year-old firefighter/paramedic withthe McKinney Fire Department at the No. 2 fire stationadjacent to Collin College's Central Park Campus. He isalso a graduate of class No. 21.

"I stumbled into the fire service," Kosten said. "When I wasin high school, I wanted to be a paramedic. Then Idiscovered that Murphy needed volunteers for thedepartment, and I needed my adrenaline fix. Being aroundthose people, I was pushed and prodded into the service.By volunteering, I realized it was the job for me."

Kosten's class started in the fall of 2001. On Sept. 11,2001, everything changed for the United States. One ofthose changes is the way everyone looked at firstresponders like police officers, firefighters and emergencymedical personnel.

Class No. 21 decided to take action. They undertook afundraising initiative for the Families of the New York CityFire Department. The students sat in front of the Wal-martat Central Expressway and Spring Creek Parkway with aboot.

The class collected more than $40,000 in donations andpresented a check to Mickey Kross, a retired New YorkCity firefighter, at the class' graduation.

"Like most people, when they watched the events in NewYork and Washington, we felt compelled to do something,"Kosten said. "It was a group effort. Everybody wasmotivated to help and raise money."

Kosten has undertaken an underreported problem in thefire service. Since joining the McKinney Fire Department,he's worked to educate his comrades in eating healthierand fighting a big problem in the service: Heart disease. He said more than 50 percent of firefighters suffer from itand it still remains the biggest killer of firefighters.

Otherwise, he loves teaching whether its in his own firehouse or amongst the new recruits.

"The biggest impact is that we send people that graduatewith a really good education into the fire service," Kostensaid. "They have a positive impact on their immediatecrew. They leave with a positive attitude and their brain isabout to explode with information. My hope is that theseguys impact the community in a positive way and provideservice with a smile."

Over 25 years, the Fire Academy has graduated more than1,100 students in 50 classes. Some of those students areinspiring and guiding classes of new recruits every fall andwinter. Others are working in a department near youpossibly inspiring new generations of America's trueheroes.

"We train our firefighters to not only be a firefighter, but a

true part of the community," McAuliff said. "Our studentsthat graduate have a direct impact on the community.Every citizen or visitor could potentially have the need fortheir skills. We hope they don't. If they do, our students areprepared to help them."
