Which is correct - alright or all right? All right, usually pronounced as

if it were a single word, probablyshould have followed the same or-thographic development as alreadyand altogether. But despite its useby a number of reputable authors, the spelling alright has never beenaccepted as a standard variant, andthe writer who chooses to risk thatspelling had best be confident that readers will acknowledge it as atoken of willful unconventionality rather than as a mark of igno-rance.

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (3/e, Houghton Mifflin, 1996)

It is less frequent than all right but remains in common useespecially in journalistic and business publications. It is quite com-mon in fictional dialogue, and is used occasionally in other writing<the first two years of medical school were alright — GertrudeStein>.

We put a lot of thought into our slogan. We wanted it to catchyand edgy. I think it is fun to make people think a little. I believe it’salright here no matter where you put the emphasis.

If you want a frown to be your umbrella, it’s alright by me. Butonly if you quote me!

What’s new in Your Hometowne? Each month more new businesses choose to use Your Hometowne

as a way to reach you, the reader. The independent business own-ers are indispensable in the new economy. They offer originality, emotional risk and community service. ... In an increasingly ho-mogenized world, communities that preserve their one-of-a-kindbusinesses and distinctive character are more likely to attract entre-preneurs and new investment. Your Hometowne places a highvalue on individuality and considers our homegrown enterprises asource of pride.

Next month we will celebrate Independent Businesses! The TrueAmerican Spirit at work!

Enjoy this wonderful time of year and make sure you tell yourfamily you love them.

ASK THE TRAINER Dear Gina,

I’m 43 years old and have been slowly gain-ing weight each year. I’ve tried every diet andexercise that’s out there, but nothing seems towork. My friend in New Jersey works with atrainer suggested that I get one. How do I go

about finding the right one for me?Confused Cathy

Dear Cathy,That is a very important question and one everyone should ask

when hiring a trainer! Unfortunately, one does not have to be certi-fied in NYS to be a trainer, so don’t assume that the trainers in yourgym are certified. If you are serious about losing the weight andgetting healthy, I suggest you interview several trainers and ask thesequestions:• May I see your certification? Make sure the certification company accredited.• How long have have you been training?• How many CEU’s do you have to complete each year?• May I see testimonials from clients you have trained?• May I talk to your clients about their training programs?• What area of fitness do you specialize in?

All of our trainers at Precise Fitness & Training are certified bynationally accredited companies and/or have a college degree is exer-cise field. We accommodate all levels from the seasoned athlete to apost rehab senior citizen. If you’d like to stop in for a free consult, giveme a call. We would love to help you reach your fitness goals.Have fitness questions? Email me @ precisefitnessnadtraining.comGina Sabatini, CproT, PTA– Precise Fitness & Training • 424-7878

THE EYES ARE THE WINDOW TO THESOUL AND BODY

The sun supports all life on our planet, but its life-giving rays also pose dangers. Most of us are aware of the harm UV radia-tion can do to the skin, but many may notrealize that exposure to UV radiation canharm the eyes or that other components ofsolar radiation can also affect vision.

There are three types of UV radiation: UV-C, which is absorbed bythe ozone layer and does not present any threat. UV-A and UV-Bradiation can have adverse long- and short-term effects on the eyes andvision.

The risk of damage to our eyes and skin from solar UV radiation iscumulative, meaning the danger continues to grow as we spend timein the sun throughout our lifetime. Exposure to solar radiation in-creases our risks of developing conditions such as cataracts or maculardegeneration. With this in mind, it's especially important for kids toprotect their eyes from the sun. Children generally spend much moretime outdoors than adults. In fact, experts say as much as 80 percentof our lifetime exposure to UV rays occurs by age 18.

Since it is not clear how much exposure to solar radiation will causedamage, the American Optometric Association recommends wearingquality sunglasses that offer UV protection and wearing a hat or capwith a wide brim whenever you spend time outdoors. To protect asmuch of the delicate skin around your eyes as possible, try at least onepair of sunglasses with large lenses or a close-fitting wraparound style.Depending on your outdoor lifestyle, you also may want to exploreperformance sunglasses or sport sunglasses. The amount of UV protec-tion sunglasses provide is unrelated to the color and darkness of thelenses. A light amber-colored lens can provide the same UV protectionas a dark gray lens. Your optician can help you choose the best sunglasslenses for your needs.

Finally, even if you are wearing contact lenses that have UV protec-tion, you still need to wear sunglasses. UV rays will likely affect the eyetissue that is not covered by the contacts. Your eyes will be more com-fortable, too, with most of the bright light blocked.

You need not fear the outdoors and sunny days, as long as you areequipped with the right eye and skin protection to reduce your UVexposure.

care and service on which Jean based her business remainunchanged. “We care for people—not just their eyes.”

PADGETT PATHWAYSSummer is around the corner! We hope ev-

eryone enjoys the weather and the great envi-ronment we live in. My name is Joe Sangalineand along with my wife, Amy, we own the localPadgett Business Services franchise. This monthwe want to take the time to discuss how the

recently enacted 2010 Health Reform legislation impacts small busi-nesses and their workers. Please feel free to contact us at any time ifyou have a question. (By phone, 348-1666, or email:[email protected])2010 Health Reform Impacts Small Business

Small businesses and their workers have good reason to pay atten-tion to some of the key provisions in the recently-enacted health re-form legislation. Whether a business will be affected by them dependson a variety of factors, such as the number of employees the businesshas. Below is an overview of the provisions in the new law that willhave the biggest impact on small business.

TTTTTax Cax Cax Cax Cax Crrrrredits.edits.edits.edits.edits. The new law provides small employers with a taxcredit (i.e., a dollar-for-dollar reduction in tax) for non elective contri-butions to purchase health insurance for their employees.

Eligibility. To qualify, a business must offer health insurance to itsemployees as part of their compensation and contribute at least halfthe total premium cost. The business must have no more than 25 full-time equivalent employees (“FTEs”), and the employees must haveannual full-time equivalent wages that average no more than $50,000.However, the full amount of the credit is available only to an employerwith 10 or fewer FTEs and whose employees have average annualfull-time equivalent wages from the employer of less than $25,000.

Years Available. The initial credit is available for tax years beginningin 2010 through 2013. Health insurance coverage purchased froman insurance company licensed under state law will qualify for thisfirst phase. After 2013, the credit is only available on coverage pur-chased through a state exchange and is only available for two years.

Amount of Credit. For tax years beginning in 2010 through 2013,the credit is generally 35% of the employer’s non elective contribu-tions toward the employees’ health insurance premiums. The credit is50% for tax years beginning after 2013. The credit phases out asfirm-size and average wages increase.

Special Rules. The employer must reduce the deduction for theamount it pays in health insurance by the dollar amount of the credit. For example, if an eligible small employer pays 100% of the cost of itsemployees’ health insurance and the amount of the tax credit is 35%of that cost, the employer can claim a deduction for the other 65% ofthe premium cost.

Exclusions. Self-employed individuals - including partners and soleproprietors, 2% shareholders of an S corporation, and five percentowners of the employer - are not eligible for the credit. There is also aspecial rule to prevent sole proprietorships from receiving the creditfor the owner and their family members.

PPPPPenalty Eenalty Eenalty Eenalty Eenalty Exxxxxemptionemptionemptionemptionemption. Employers with fewer than 50 employeesaren’t subject to the “pay or play” penalty for not providing coverageto their employees. For businesses with at least 50 employees, thepossible penalties vary depending on whether or not the employeroffers health insurance to its employees. These provisions take effectJan. 1, 2014.

Padgett Business Services is dedicated to meeting the tax, government compliance, profit & financialreporting and payroll needs of businesses with fewer than 20 employees in the retail and service sector ofthe economy. This publication suggests general business planning concepts that may be appropriate incertain situations. It is designed to provide complete and accurate information to the reader. However, because of the complexities of the tax law and the necessity of determining whether the material discussedherein is appropriate to your business, it is important you seek advice from your Padgett office beforeimplementing any of the concepts suggested in this article.PENALTY NOTICE: As required by U.S. Treasury regulations, you are advised that any written tax advicecontained herein was not written or intended to be used (and cannot be used) by any taxpayer for thepurpose of avoiding penalties that may be imposed under the Internal Revenue Code.

THE WORLD IS A LITTLE BRIGHTERWITH A SMILE

Oral hygiene is the first lineof defense against cavities anddental diseases. Here are sometips and instruction on how tokeep your pearly whites healthyand bright:1. Brush in large circles, notaggressively back and forth. Itis more important to spend timewhile brushing. Using forcewhile brushing is not necessary and can cause damage to your gumtissue. Heavy handed brushers may benefit from electric toothbrushes.2. Use a soft toothbrush and change it every couple of months. Makesure to use a new toothbrush after being sick even if it has not beenused for long. Many toothbrushes now have color indicators to letyou know when it is time to change your toothbrush. If the bristlesare splayed it is time for a new toothbrush.3. Brush your tongue. The tongue harbors bacteria and can be asource of bad breath.4. Brush twice daily (or more if you are able!) for two minutes eachtime. For older children and adults a timer can help to make sure youput your time in. For younger children singing their favorite songtwice will keep them interested and engaged.5. Floss at least once daily. It is important to get below the soft tissueand get out any food debris. Wrap the floss around your fingers andgo between every tooth in your mouth. Don’t forget to go behind thelast tooth toward the back of your mouth even though it doesn’t havea partner.6. Rinse as suggested or prescribed by your dentist.7. Cut down on snacks between meals as these prevent your mouthfrom naturally cleansing and restoring itself.

We hope these tips help and make for a good report at your nextcheckup with your dentist. For more information contact Dr. Szymczak Evans andDr. Evans. Who knew?Chicken McNuggets—Good news: a McDonalds Chicken

McNugget does contain chicken. But it’s not the main ingredient-not even close. According the Michael Pollen, author of The

Omnivore’s Dilemma, a McNugget is made up of 38 ingredients, mostly chemicals and corn derivatives. In total, a McNugget is 56%corn products. But 0.02 is tertiary butylhydroquinone, a petroleumbyproduct used as a preservative. TBHQ is actually butane, also

known as lighter fluid.

ORTHO MEDICAL PRODUCTSMOVE OVER DESTINYCHANCE IS IN TOWN!

I asked around the other day…do you believein destiny? Is it meant to be or do you believe it isall up to chance? I have to say the answers weremixed quite equally. Some of them, not wanting to lean one way or theother, afraid that their answer may be wrong. Sadly it seemed that noone really cared either way. Did they not care what happens in theirlives? Did they feel they could not change it? Were they using it as anexcuse? It will be what it will be – the plans are laid, our path drawn.Or….will they hope that by chance they will wake up one morningand their lives will be all they have dreamed them to be? So what is itthat makes us do what we do? Is it an innate feature of our makeup thatdrives our hearts and our bodies to do something with our lives? Or isit a sudden spark, by chance, not sought after, but appearing for noother reason than to simply appear.

I feel we are given an opportunity to have a path and it is up to us todecide to cautiously travel along its winding roads or to build moreroad and more opportunities along the way. I have met people from allwalks of life, from age 6 to 86 and have found many that have changedmy life. I feel I am drawn to the ones I need to be drawn too. I wantthem to teach me, to learn from me, to inspire me and to inspire them. This is how I want to be brought together to the people in my life.Maybe it is destiny that brought me to them. Or… just simply bychance. How they came about to be part of my life, is irrelevant! Theyare here and I need them. I am drawn to them for many reasons. Iwant to surround myself with the beautiful, intelligent and strong. Iwant to be among others that appreciate the beauty of our hearts andour souls. Other that glory in the shear pleasure of being excited to bealive, ones full of passion for life and its meaning. I want to be adornedwith strong honest individuals that can not only speak the truth –right or wrong, but really know the truth their hearts hold. Peoplewho desire to learn and be better with each passing day. These are theones I need, the ones that I will follow, the ones that I will seek out evenif by chance. So as I walk my path, sometimes taking the road right infront of me and other times veering off, I will look for you. I will keepwalking until I meet you, maybe you are on the path as well. If notmaybe, just maybe, by chance you have veered off your path and nowwalk on mine, I will welcome you with open arms and an open heart.Until then….. my friend, until then.

As always, I wish you peace, joy and a road filled with opportunityand friendship!

STAY TUNEDAfter years of not playing guitar and recently getting

back into it, my fingers are finally re-callused. Bendingguitar strings up thru the pentatonic scale will toughenthem up in no time. There are a lot of things that pick-

ing up an instrument will do for you, whether it’s the first time you’replaying or re-finding your passion as in my case, there is a goodargument for getting music into your life.

Studies show that practicing a musical instrument is associatedwith enhanced verbal ability and nonverbal reasoning. It makes senseif you think about it, music forces you to use both sides of yourbrain, perfect for a child in his formative years as well as an agingpioneer of the 60’s (as the old saying goes if you remember the 60’syou weren’t there).

As we grow older, music has a place for us, keeping your handslimber can be a challenge, playing a guitar can help. Keeping yourbody toned is always a challenge, but not to my second cousin out inCalifornia who well into his 80’s plays the drums as well anyone 30years his junior. Fortunately for me music runs in my family, myMom plays the organ, my Dad plays the guitar and my cousin Steveis a killer Bass player with a band on Long Island. He is also themanager for Chris Caffery, one of the lead guitarist’s for the TransSiberian Orchestra. There is no better time to consider learning aninstrument and Burnt Hills Music has all you need to get started.Currently there are nine teachers working with Burnt hills Music, covering most any instrument you might consider and the rates aremost affordable. In fact RIGHT now on Saturdays from 11:00-2:30, local musician Jay Toussignant is available to teach and guideyou on your musical quest, call 399-6047 for details. Next monthlook for an inspirational story about a local man, critically injured ina motorcycle accident who never gave up his desire to play guitar andagainst all odds has baffled his doctors with an amazing recovery andpersonal triumph, next month meet Chuck….. Stay tuned.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION FORSEPTEMBER 2010Burnt Hills – Ballston Lake and ScotiaGlenville

BH-BL parents who have not alreadyregistered their child for kindergar-ten next fall are urged to do so assoon as possible. To start kin-dergarten, children must befive on or before Dec. 1, 2010and must reside with a parentor legal guardian within BH-BLdistrict boundaries.

Parents: please contact MaryAnn Meade at 399-9141, ext.3500, to let us know aboutyour child and receive an in-formation packet.

Only 146 incoming pupils took part in the annual KindergartenRegistration drive held on March 8 & 9, whereas recent experienceshows that there are probably 200 or more new kindergarten pupils inthe district.

Knowing the number of new pupils to expect in the fall is especiallyimportant this spring due to the budget cuts the Board of Educationis currently discussing. We want to be sure we have enough staff andfacilities to accommodate all our pupils.

Scotia-Glenville registers new students through a central registrarlocated at the District Office, 900 Preddice Parkway (at the end ofLark Street), Scotia.

Parents must make an appointment to register a child. Contact theregistrar, Karol Newton, at 382-5876. Leave a message, if necessary. She will return your call.
