As my children walked up the driveway from the bus, Katelyn (grade 1) and Leanne (in JK) were singing at the top of theirvoices, "He is Lord, He is Lord, He is risen from the dead and He is Lord…" Hearing their voicespraise the Lord was the best welcome home I could ever receive. Another reason I am thankful forWoodstock Christian School and the work that goes on each day within the walls, on the playground, and during bus rides.

Running a school of this quality takes wisdom, hard work, and many resources. Last year we askedfor donations towards our new playground equipment, the tuition assistance fund and the debtrepayment. Thank you for donating.

This year the Forward Fundraising Drive is raising money for four projects and we wanted toupdate you on the current donations.

In total $48,085 has been donated!1. A new bus to complement our current fleet. Current: $7270 2. A new heating and cooling system Current: $68503. Tuition Assistance Fund Current: $18604. Debt Repayment Current: $32,105

Thank you for donating to these projects and for supportingWoodstock Christian School. There is still a great need. Pleaseconsider supporting one of these projects. He is Lord! That is why the school exists; to support parents in teaching our children His truths and how to live them each day inall areas of life. Nothing could be better!

My final column this year is inspired by Dr. Seuss' book, "Oh the Thinks youcan Think!"Oh the thinks you can think…The school year 2013-2014 is coming to an end and it's time to think.Think about what we saw, heard and learned each day…There are so many THINKS a thinker can think! You can think about timestables and fractions galore! And how many sides does a heptagon have? Whatis 55% of 6320? Think, brain, think! You can think and wonder about Space and the Cell and Maps and the Human

Body. Would you dare pick up a slimy snail, or squish in a pool of mud?Books, books, amazing books! They take our thinks all through time and space and place- howneat is that!?! Think of Clifford the Big Red Dog, of Flat Stanley who travels all over the world. And who can forget Nate the Great and the cases he solves? Don't forget to think about Woland Weeps, the owls in the family who made us all laugh. Now think about how life is forParvana in The Breadwinner- that's such a hard thought. You can think about recess - awesome climbers and slides. You can think about man hunt, soccer and four square. You can even think about baseball… playing was so much fun!And then you can think about pizza lunch or sub days, and Pancake Breakfast day!

And don't forget to think about chapelswhen we celebrated God's love in suchspecial days as Christmas, Thanksgiving,Easter and Pentecost.Who can forget the crazy hat day, bubblegum day, the Amazing race and then therewas Spring has Sprung Sports day?And let's also think aboutbuddies…Buddies, Buddies, Wonderfulbuddies- reading buddies, art buddies andbuddies in the computer lab.Oh yes! Think for a minute how the schoolsang O Canada Friday mornings with thesenior choir leading us. And then thinkhow the choir got to sing the nationalanthem at the Blue Jays' game April 26th.You can think a long time about that. And who can forget the raccoon on theroof and the muskrat in the fence and theCanada Goose setting on her eggs. Orhow many, many crows messed up ourplayground! Yup, let's think a while aboutthat!Roamin' through Romans - now there's a good think… who can forget Romans 8:28? OrRomans 12:2…. 'do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by therenewing of your mind.' We can think about Robot Jakub until the sun goes down.Remember the class trips… oh they were so great! You can think about those until half pasteight! Can you remember the first day of the school year? What happened on all the days after that? Now here we are at the end of the year… and we still go on thinking and thinking and thinking…Think! Think and wonder. Wonder and think. Of our faithful, awesome, incredible God…knowing He led us day after day after day after day…Think and 'grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ and to know thislove that surpasses knowledge' (and all thinking!)……how we are rooted and established in Him

in all of our learning and playing ………..and being together.

Oh the thinks you can think of... if only you try….

COMMUNITY CORNER

Who can believe this school year is almost over? It isJune already and we are looking forward to 2014/15. At thistime we have 13 new families joining us in September atWoodstock Christian School. I am excited to get to knowthese new students and parents!

At this time, we are continuing with WelcomeWednesdays every Wednesday morning from 9-noon until theend of the school year. Welcome Wednesdays are the idealtime for anyone interested in WCS to tour the school, seeclassrooms in session and meet our staff. If Wednesdaymornings do not work, we can schedule an appointment at adifferent time by calling the office 519-539-1492 or [email protected].

In September we will start with the WelcomeWednesdays again. We will continue with them throughoutthe entire school year. Also, I will be looking into morevisible road signage for the school, an updated promotionalvideo and forming a prayer group. I am so encouraged by thevolunteering of time and the donations of items we require tomake all of our events a success. I feel like our communitycontinues to bless Woodstock, honour God and enrich ourstudents.

This was evident as we celebrated Christian EducationWeek (2014). It was a full week including a VolunteerAppreciation Assembly, Art Walk Open House, a PicnicLunch, 3 showings of the Musical “Roamin' throughRomans” and to top it off, Grand Friends Day. The week waswell attended and the atmosphere in the school was positive! For me Grand Friends Day is such a highlight as we have achance to see the rich history and deep roots of our school. Ilove treating our friends to lunch and visiting with themthroughout the day.

If you are willing to help with the promotional video or ifyou would like to be part of a 'small group style' prayer groupplease let me know. Take the summer to think and pray aboutit and consider what gifts you have to offer WoodstockChristian School! Thank you.

GRADE 8 - MRS. CAROL VERBEEK

In grade eight this year, we have explored the seasons via poetry, paying special attentionto the sensory experiences of summer and winter. In the Bible, Job explains how the God ofCreation displays his power through geographic features, creatures, and the weather/seasons.We had lots of experience with winter this year, and the poems below capture some familiarimages.

A Winter Dialogue by Josh

Hey, want togo outsideNo, it's coldand deadSo wear a hatBut I'll get stabbedby an icicleNo you won't let's go tobogganingBut I want to stayby the firesideBut there is smokeand it's no funYou are rightwhat could be the harm?I knew you wouldsee it my way YeahLet's go!

winter poem by Brandon

The snow is white and coldwe make snow forts and throwsnow balls. we play ice hockeyor pond hockeygo sledding and christmas is here,Jesus was born.we shovel all most every day we dress warmsnow pants, coat, hat, mittensit can be slushyit can be slippery if it is coldyou can get frost bite your face can get frost biteit will be clack not nice to have.

Winter Poem by Luke

When I step outside I feel the frozen air blowing at my face.I don't like the cold winter air.It is a bad feeling.I pick up some snow then make a snow ball.It feels cold on my hands. When I look to the my right I see lots of birdson the top of the house. They always seem so happy. When I look to my left I seea big snow drift probably about my height. When I look ahead I see asnow plow going down the road. All that I see is snow flying in all directions. When it passes - the snow lands so gently.I walk over to the road and seethe way the snow landed.Only to see some birds flying directly above me.When I see my dogs running down thelandway towards me.They stop and run in a different direction. When I get there I find asquirrel up in the tree. The squirrel runs to the nexttree and disappears.

The Great Winter by Dylan

For the ground was iceanything was frozen as it went outsideHats, mittens, scarves, and boots would befrozencars, trucks, and vans were frozensnow everywhere turning to slushthe world was frozen from the inside outthe ice turned to water then turned back to iceice fell and shattered off buildingssnow piled up higher and higherslippery ice and crunchy snowthe sun will risethen the sun will fallmetal will freeze and breakthe air would feel like it would freezefor the ice went awayfor the snow was gone forever.

Winter Ways by Sydney

Opening the curtain andalready knowing, NO SCHOOL!A perfect white blizzardsounds the air at midnight.Snow all over; driftsto shovel. Oh so heavy snow!Bundle up, the temp 20below; spin chilling, nose frozen.Frost has bitten yet again, from God given winds.Cocoa to unchill ourstiff cold, dear bodies.I snuggle under a blanket to stay warm. Oh don't make a draft! The snow calms down and tomorrow, I'm sorry to tell you Oh yes we will have a sniffledfilled day at school.

Winter Wind by Caleb

She seeps in Through the crack of your window and bites at your neck. She crawls into work sites. She gets you when least expected. She slaps passers by in the face. She runs around yelling, " Look at me!" When she is mad she slaps you in the face like you are no one.She does not treat you like a human being. She picks things up around you and drops them.Screaming in our faces, pulling us down, forcing us to cover every last inch of our bodies with warm clothing. She roams around attacking trees biting at animals. She picks up the snow around us and makes it dance in our facescontinually. She creates crazy patterns in the snow causing it to pile up by our doorsteps. She is crazy, wacky and weird and irritates all sorts of people but she is God's creation. We should respect her because God has created her and everythingGod creates, He creates with a reason.

Winter Poem by Nate

There is a woman who is beautiful but cold, her heart is of ice, her eyes, white gold. Her presence freezes water, her breath creates snow.I walk outside to see this lady, shining in the morning sun,For it is then that I realize that winter has begun. This lady named winter is loved, and hateddespised, consecrated. This lady named winter has control of the seasonshe cannot see your reason.

This lady named winter hates the heatshe thinks winter can't be beat. She doesn't love summer, the bane of her breath, the end of her reign. This lady named winterflees from her hometo other arctic habitsand leaves us alone.

Winter Poem: A Winter Wonderland by Emma

as i race to the window i squeal with gleefor a white wonderland stands right before me

i slide in my snow pants and stuff on my coati squeeze on my mittens and say hi to my goat

i sink in the white blanket and i look aroundfor crunchy white crystals cover the ground

i am blinded by the snow and its white glimmerand gaze at the icicles and their bright shimmer

i sit in the snow and look at the sunas a boy threw a snowball, boy had that stung

i pack some snow and roll it with careas some more hard snowballs flew through the air

my friend joined the fun as i called her for help and running through the snow i started to yelp

now my mom called me in with my frostbitten toesi sit by the fire and watch how it glows

The Beach by Erica

The sun bakes down on the people below,The waves try to gulp down the shoreline,The cold, wet water flows and roars,The children laugh, giggle, and splash in the water,The seaweed waiting to grab your leg,The ocean breeze whispering words,The seagulls waiting to snatch your food,The sand makes up lumps and bumps,The people bobbing up and down,The sandy smell travelling around,The logs that wound up on shore,The rainbow of the beach umbrellas,The motorboats that zoom past, and the design of footprints in the sand. All these great things about the beachMake me wanna go again.

Senses of Summer by Alexis

Loud laughter in the backgroundCrunch of the crisp watermelonWet rocky kayakingMajestic views from our rustic cabinRelaxing by the poolA beautiful pink sunset is a rose BANG!! the crack of thunder The quiet mewing of 3 new voicesToasted marshmallows in the eveningTugging of my fishing line is like a new beginning The dust up your nose as I drive the tractor up the fieldHearing the paddle of the antique boat in the Muskoka watersPractically flying down the dusty path mulingHearing country music from theback of the tailgateEndless nights of capture the flag with my friendsThose are the senses of summer to me.

Summer Poem by Ben

Summer is the waves at Long Point pawing at the shore.Diving under the icy water submerging myself under a giant wave.Nothing is more satisfying than propelling myself over my brotherand acrobatically crashing down the sand dune.Cradling marshmallows in the hot currents of the fire.Next up, Port Burwell with the scorching hot sun.Breaking the record by going through four cases of water in four days with seven people. The jagged rocks and life threatening jumps.Making my journey to the lighthouse even more dangerous. With Luke zooming down a mudslide catching glimpses of deer. Then the dreadful ascent up the hill to do it again. Now at Cedar Park with family chattering like squirrels amongst ourselves.Trying to stop in the water slide to block the water like beavers building a dam.Springing off of the diving board doing a graceful front flip to end up crashing in the water.Fast as bullets trying to pack up before the downpour comes upon us.The pages were flipping feathers in the wind when I read Maximum Ride. The relaxing days were in my favour.

TEACHER TALK:In Literature this spring, we read the book, Night, by Elie Wiesel, whichis an autobiographical account of his experiences as teen during thetime of World War two. Elie writes honestly and bluntly of his trauma inthe concentration camps. As a class, we had many terrific discussionsabout the presence of evil in our broken world, our need for Jesus ourSaviour, and how it is to be human and hopeful in a broken world. Somestudent responses to the book are as follows:

I think Wiesel took a five year vow of silence because he wanted torespect those who had died. He wanted to forgive everyone for whatthey had done. He wanted to stop and listen for those who had died andmourn for those who were gone. Wiesel had trouble finding a publisherbecause he had such a horrible story to tell, a story that needed to betold, but a story that was just horrid. If I had gone through what Wieselhad gone through, I would try to be as strong as him to write this bookbut that would be so hard. I applaud him. by Linda

I think Elie wrote this book so he could tell the world hisstory, not because he wanted to be famous but so we, theother people who are on this earth, can know what happenedto people in the concentration camps, so we can know thehorror of life there. I think he chose NIGHT as the titleprobably because all his time was so dark, just like nightswithout stars and the moon. His time there was a dark night, maybe. I would probably ask him what was the hardest partfor him at the concentration camps, and how he coped withthe world after he left. He changed after his time in theconcentration camps because he was no longer a boy whohad never known such evil, and he didn't believe in Godanymore. by Makayla

I think Elie Wiesel wrote this book because he was awitness. As a witness, you have to tell what you saw, heard, and felt even though it might be horrible. I think he chose"Night " as the title because it explains that this is going tobe dark. I would like to ask him about how he feels becausehe lives. Do you view life in a different way? If this were tohappen again, how do you think people will react? Did youwish you had moved before the ghettos were created in yourtown? Elie changed because he had gotten used to deathbeing the normal. He had to learn again to eat with manners, feel sad when someone dies and more. He became quieter. He doesn't understand why he is alive. Someone moredeserving could be alive instead of him. by Sydney

Page 11: June - July 2014 - Woodstock Christian · Woodstock Christian School and the work that goes on each day within the walls, on the playground, and during bus rides. Running a school

I think the reason that Elie Wiesel vowed to silence for fiveyears was because he hadn't got over it yet. He was still somad that he didn't want to think about it anymore than he hadto. I think it was hard for him to find a publisher because noone wanted to because it is so hard to think about all the painand sorrow. It was so influential because we never actuallydid know how sad it really was. I always knew it was verysad but not crazy details like that. That book is extremelypowerful and everyone should read it to know the pain of theJews. If I went through that, I would write a book so thateveryone could know what the Jews went through. And Iiwould definitely be public about what happened. If AdolfHitler and the Nazis didn't kill all of those Jews, there wouldhave been so much more in the world. All of that potential, and their kids and grandkids as well. We have to take a standagainst racism or any discrimination. That is how we willmake sure it will never happen again. by Jacob

I will remember longest the scene when Elie Wiesel wasseparated with his mom and sister when they entered to theconcentration camp. Because that time was the last chance tosee his family and they died in the gas chamber. And whenNazis threw lots of Jewish children into the fire at thebeginning of Elie's nightmare will stick with me. This bookchanged my thinking a lot. After this book, I knew they'vedone more terrible than what I've thought. The saddest? "When young children were killed by SS"The most horrifying? "When Jewish people beat their friendsto live"The most angering? "When Jewish inmates ran for manyhours, they were not allowed to rest, but SS people wereallowed to switch with others when they were tired."The most surprising? "Elie Wiesel had an operation withoutanesthesia."The most confusing? "It was so confusing that Elie was stilla Jewish while he was writing this book"The most touching? "They didn't give up and tried their bestto survive in the darkness." by Junghyun

It has changed my way of thinking because now I think about all thehorrible things that happened in those camps and to people like ElieWiesel. I think the saddest part in the book is when Elie's fatherdies and the book says "His last word had been my name. He hadcalled out to me and I had not answered."I think the most horrifying part in the book is when the babies getthrown into the fire because that is a terrible thing to do and I don'tknow why anybody would do such a terrible thing. The mostangering part is when Rabbi Eliahu's son leaves him in the snowwhen they were running. The most surprising part is when Elie findsout that he would've been freed if he stayed in the infirmary. Themost touching part was when Juliek played Beethoven on his violinwhen they were in the barracks.I think Elie Wiesel wrote "Night" because he wanted to let peopleknow what terrible things happened in the concentration camps andto tell the story of his life in Auschwitz.I wouldn't want to ask him questions about the camps because itwould bring back bad memories for him. He changed in theconcentration camp because all he saw there was death so whenhe got out all he knew was death. by Ryan

The thing I will probably remember longest is how some ofthem were burned alive in the crematorium. The image thatwill stick with me the longest will probably be the image ofhalf dead people laying in a hole ready to be buried alive bythe Nazis. The saddest part of the story for me is how peoplethat were too old and too young just got thrown into thecrematorium to die. The most horrific moment would bewhen they were forced to run to another camp, some wererun to the death. I was most angry when the SS called theJews dogs and pigs. The most surprising moment would bewhen the Germans made the Jews clean the bunks up so itdidn't look like the Jews were treated like pigs. I was mostconfused why they ran the Jews to the next camp; they couldhave just shot them on the spot. The most touching momentis when he (Elie) looks into the mirror for the first time inyears. by Luke
