Before Japan declared war on the United States,they had occupied the Korean Peninsular over 40years and had pushed deep into China, Burma, partof Russia! So the Tigers had good reason to be inthe mountains of Korea!

During the Korean War they were either killed ormoved to quieter places!

When the Regt. Went online in June 1952 I was aSgt.from Germany replacing a Sgt going Zonelnterior!

Riflemen on the MLR would swear they saw astump move, or the barbwire would rattle, but noenemy was seen!

While waiting in the rear for the Regt. to settle inour relief to start, we were being oriented withenemy tactics and weapons.

Measurements taken by scientists of the Siberian Tiger Project in Sikhote-Alin range from 178 to 208cm (70 to 82 in) in head and body length measured in sraight line, with an average of 195 cm(77 in) formales; and for females ranging from 167 to 182 om (66 to 72 in) with an avsrage of 174 cm (69 in). Theaverage tail measures 99 om (39 in) in males and 9l cm (36 in) in females. The meanweight of historical Siberian tigers is supposed to be higher: 215.3 kg (475 lb) for male tigers and

The largest male, with largely assured references, measured 350 cm (140 in) "over curves", equivalent to330 cm (130 ir) betwcen pegs. The tail length ia fully grown males is about 1 m (39 in). Weights of upto 318 kg (700 lb) have been recorded and exceptionally large males weighing up to 384 kg (850lb) arementioned in the literature but according to Mazdk none of these cases can be confirmed via reliable

A firther rmconfirmed report tells of a male tiger slrot in the Sikhote-Alin Mounains in 1950 weighing384 kg (850 lb) with an estimaied length of 3.48 m (11.4 ft). In some cases, Siberian tigers in capivityreached a body weight of up to 465 kg (1,030 lb), such as the tiger "Jaipur".llJl

The skull of the Siberian tiger is distinguished by its larger overall size, as well as the development of its

saeittal orest, whose height and strength exceeds that of other tigors and the lion.l4} The skullprominences, especially sagittal crest and crista occioitalis.re very high and strong in old males, andoften much more massive than usually observed in the biggest skulls of Indign tisers. The size variationin skulls of Siberian tigers ranges from 331 to 383 mm (13.0 to 15.1 in) in 9 individuals measured. Afemale skull is always smaller and never so heavily built and robust as that of a male. The height of thesagittal crest in its middle-part reaches as muoh as 27 mm (1.1 in), and in its posterior part up to 46 mm

The skull length of the malcs fromTurkestan had a maximurn leng& of 297.0 to 365.8 mm (1 1.69 to 14.40 in), while that of femalesmeasured 195.7 to 255.5 mm (1.70 to 10.06 in). In January 1954, a tiger killed on &e.Sumbar in Kooet-Dae had a skull greatcst length of 385 mm (15.2 in), which is considerably more than the knownma,ximum for this population and slightly exceeds that of most Far Eastem tigers. I have an idear maybe erroneousrr os to rrhy the original may have

disappeared on its way to my house. On page 18 the second article is about

Eugene Schurnacher who lived in JoLiet. In the obituarl, it mentions that he

worked for the U. S. Postal Service. llaybe sqne of his work buddies from

years back decided to keep that issue for personal reasons.

As $ said when f talked to you by phone, I had a brother-in'-1av (now

deceased) who vorked as a nnil man in Joliet years ago. He said Lhat he read

every magazine that he delivered. He showed me a lray to handle the magazines

so that they could be read without ever appoaring to have been opened. Nice

guy, huh.

f might add, though, that he apparently did not teach that to a]l hisco-workers because this \.ra,s the only issue of BATILE STAR^S that I have

received in recent years that came in pristine condition. All the others came

to in the condition of a used library book. !4aybe it's because the second

nniling came in a sealed envelope. This makes me sound paranoid, I l<nowr but

On the bottom half of page 23 is an article about the Chinese push

through the 555th field artilIery battalion on July 14, 1953. In looking

back (hindsight is always 20-20), I wish the arqr would have interviewed the

survivors through a highly trained interrogater in order to get each person's

story as soon as possible arter the action.
