Before Japan declared war on the United States, they had occupied the Korean Peninsular over 40years and had pushed deep into China, Burma, partof Russia! So the Tigers had good reason to be inthe mountains of Korea!

During the Korean War they were either killed ormoved to quieter places!

When the Regt. Went online in June 1952 I was aSgt.from Germany replacing a Sgt going Zonelnterior!

Riflemen on the MLR would swear they saw astump move, or the barbwire would rattle, but noenemy was seen!

While waiting in the rear for the Regt. to settle inour relief to start, we were being oriented withenemy tactics and weapons.

A Cadrymen made the remark that some patrolslost the rear guard man either going out or coming

in! They figured the enemy was taking a prisoner. lfit was happening that quietly I would have thoughtthat sounded much more like a tiger than enemysoldiers, their mouths could put your whole head in!- No Problem. See pages 3 & 4

Siberian tigerFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaJump to: naviqation, search

Measurements taken by scientists of the Siberian Tiger Project in Sikhote-Alin range from 178 to 208cm (70 to 82 in) in head and body length measured in sraight line, with an average of 195 cm(77 in) formales; and for females ranging from 167 to 182 om (66 to 72 in) with an avsrage of 174 cm (69 in). Theaverage tail measures 99 om (39 in) in males and 9l cm (36 in) in females. The longest male "Maurice"measured 309 cm (122 n) in total length (tail of l0l cm (40 in) and had a chest girth of 127 cm (50 in).The longest female "Maria lvanna" measured 270 cm (l 10 in) in total length (tail of 88 cm (35 in)) andhad a chest girth of 108 cm (43 in). These measurements show that the presont Amur tiger is longer than

the Bengaltiger and the African lion.I6l According to modern reseaxch of wild Siberian tigers inSikhote-Alin, anaverage adult male of more than 35 months of age weighs l76.4kg(389 lb), theaverage asymptotic limit bcing 222.3 kg (a90 Ib); an adult tigress weighs 117.9 kg (260 lb). The meanweight of historical Siberian tigers is supposed to be higher: 215.3 kg (475 lb) for male tigers and

137.5 kg (303 lb) for females.IZl In May 20ll,amale called nBanzai" weighing 207 kg(460 lb) was

radio-collared" This individual is heavier but smaller in size than a previously radio-collared male.I&l

Measurements of more than fiffry captr:red individuals suggest that body size is similar to that of Bengal

tigers.[21

The largest male, with largely assured references, measured 350 cm (140 in) "over curves", equivalent to330 cm (130 ir) betwcen pegs. The tail length ia fully grown males is about 1 m (39 in). Weights of upto 318 kg (700 lb) have been recorded and exceptionally large males weighing up to 384 kg (850lb) arementioned in the literature but according to Mazdk none of these cases can be confirmed via reliable

sources.tlol

A firther rmconfirmed report tells of a male tiger slrot in the Sikhote-Alin Mounains in 1950 weighing384 kg (850 lb) with an estimaied length of 3.48 m (11.4 ft). In some cases, Siberian tigers in capivityreached a body weight of up to 465 kg (1,030 lb), such as the tiger "Jaipur".llJl

E!!!l Skull

The skull of the Siberian tiger is distinguished by its larger overall size, as well as the development of its

saeittal orest, whose height and strength exceeds that of other tigors and the lion.l4} The skullprominences, especially sagittal crest and crista occioitalis.re very high and strong in old males, andoften much more massive than usually observed in the biggest skulls of Indign tisers. The size variationin skulls of Siberian tigers ranges from 331 to 383 mm (13.0 to 15.1 in) in 9 individuals measured. Afemale skull is always smaller and never so heavily built and robust as that of a male. The height of thesagittal crest in its middle-part reaches as muoh as 27 mm (1.1 in), and in its posterior part up to 46 mm

(1.8 in).tEl

Ferralc skulls range from 279.7 to 3 10.2 mm (1 I .01 to 12.21 in). The skull length of the malcs fromTurkestan had a maximurn leng& of 297.0 to 365.8 mm (1 1.69 to 14.40 in), while that of femalesmeasured 195.7 to 255.5 mm (1.70 to 10.06 in). In January 1954, a tiger killed on &e.Sumbar in Kooet-Dae had a skull greatcst length of 385 mm (15.2 in), which is considerably more than the knownma, ximum for this population and slightly exceeds that of most Far Eastem tigers. However, it'scondylobasal length was of only 305 mm (12.0 in), smaller than those of the Amur tigers, with a

mrurimumrecordedcondylobasallength of 342mm(13.5in).HfnebiggestskullofaSiberiantigerfrom Manchuria measured 406 mm (16.0 in) in length, which is about 2S-30 mm (0.79-l .2 in) more

than the ma,ximum skull lengths achieved by tigers from the Amur region and northem 16i6.tl!11

The geographical range of Amur tigers in the Russian Far East stetches south to north for almost

l,0d k; (OZO mi) ttroughout the llngth of Primorskv Krai and into southern Khlbarovsk Krai east and

south of the Amur River. They also occur within the Eastem Manchurian mountain system, whichoross6s into Russia Aom Ctrina at several plaoes in southwest Primorye. ln both regions, peaks are

gcnerally 500 to 800 m (1,600 to 2;600 ft) above sea level, with only a few reaching 1,000 m (3,300 ft)or more. This region represents a merger zone of two biorecions: the East Asian coniferousdeciduouscomplex and the northem boreal compler resulting in amosaic of forest tylles that vary with elevation"

Itopography and history. Key habitats for the Amur tiger are Korean pine broadleaf forests with acomplex composition and structure. The ungulate complex is represented by ggg!-@, wild boar, sikadeer, roe deer. Manchurian moose, musk deer md ehoral[!4]

Dear Mr. Jennings:

I fln the one you wrote last month about the $200.00 check which had gone over its6 month limit. So sorry for all the oonfipion.

My father, Bill R Eliaire, was in the Army, a member of the 56 RCT Assn., & had evenarended several reunions. Dad passed away in June zf.ll. Ifugh had published &enotification letter I had surt him,

"lorrg with my dad's obituary info. In addition to tha!

Hugh sent me quite a few copies of that particular publicationas a memento. I was quiietouched.

I felt led to send the S200.00 donation to the 56 RCTAssn. as a result ofHugh, skidness.I had b"., dtivins Dad's hrck for a short time in Dece, mbcr 20l l before I sold it to afriend- The check was unhowingly lost in the truck My &iend found it in Apdl & thenmailed it for me. That's how the delay in getting it to Hugh occrured.

So with all that said, please acceptthis new check in memory of my father, Bitl R. Haire.IIe eqioyed sta)ring oonnectodto &osc he *nery in tre Army. VourprUlicdion is veryinformative & shows se,nsitivity to those urho are grorying ota A passing fiom tnis wortCotr heroes have been through a lot My dad was no excJption.

Ruck:

Ttranks for sending me W issue of BATTLE STARS to

replace the one I didn't get. As usual, it was very inforrnative.

I have an idear maybe erroneousrr os to rrhy the original may have

disappeared on its way to my house. On page 18 the second article is about

Eugene Schurnacher who lived in JoLiet. In the obituarl, it mentions that he

worked for the U. S. Postal Service. llaybe sqne of his work buddies from

years back decided to keep that issue for personal reasons.

As $ said when f talked to you by phone, I had a brother-in'-1av (now

deceased) who vorked as a nnil man in Joliet years ago. He said Lhat he read

every magazine that he delivered. He showed me a lray to handle the magazines

so that they could be read without ever appoaring to have been opened. Nice

guy, huh.

f might add, though, that he apparently did not teach that to a]l hisco-workers because this \.ra,s the only issue of BATILE STAR^S that I have

received in recent years that came in pristine condition. All the others came

to in the condition of a used library book. !4aybe it's because the second

nniling came in a sealed envelope. This makes me sound paranoid, I l<nowr but

f guess-rqi.rnail is not jppglm$*r-*,-.,

On the bottom half of page 23 is an article about the Chinese push

through the 555th field artilIery battalion on July 14, 1953. In looking

back (hindsight is always 20-20), I wish the arqr would have interviewed the

survivors through a highly trained interrogater in order to get each person's

story as soon as possible arter the action.

Etom vhat f sanrr it seemed to be a microcosm of the coplete range ofhunan behavior. A very good friend of m:ine vas no more than thirty feet away

from rne during rm:ch of that event, yet we didn't see each otherr dnd our

details.. After we received adequate replacemtns, the army could have

interviewed a few men at a tire over Eieveral days' Right after it happened

nearly everyone ttas $rilLing to talk about it'

wtren I got home and found that no one cared about Korear I clarffnd up' I

talked with it starting about 1985, and then only r,iith guys who were in the

in writing- unfortunately, thoge of us vho survived, Iike Glenn Horne who

is sentioned in the obituaries on page 19 are quickly passing avay and many of

the others either vonrt talk about it or canrt remember all the facts'

. r see by the membership roster that you uere in G€orge company in

1952-1953. Do you remerber a guy whose last name lras Grenier' If Jrm not

mistaken he was from Kentucky. He was good friends with one of our forvard

touch with Grenier?

Ird like to get in touch with Bearr but I lost all touch with him

although he did go to a 5th RCI reunion at least J-l years ago' He signed in'

but left no address.

If you can help rn€ outr Ruckr fine. If you caDrtr well, that's life' I

wonrt blame You, thtrs for sure'

To sort of repeat myself, this issue of BATILE STARS brought back

a lot of remories. If you want to hear a version of the overrun that is

different than the arrnyrp but which agrees with those of at least two living

gurvivorsr give me a call. That is, if yOu want to hear me talk for at

least an hour. I have unlimited long distance coverage on my phone' If you

can't afford the callr calf re and I'11 call you back' If you quote me' I may
