GEELONG HARMONY CHORUS Theres not a lot to report other than a very pleasant sojourn to Wollongong where we competed in the Sweet Adelines

Australia regional championships and although we missed

out on any bling we did improve our national ranking by

three places from 10th last year to seventh this year which pleased our Musical Director Alex Morris no end

As always wed love to have more members Were a great

bunch of women singers who take their a cappella harmony singing very seriously but we also manage to fulfil the fun

and friendship part of the deal too If you know a woman

who loves to sing the ringing chords of four-part a cappella

barbershop then get her to call Cynthia on 0406 666 737 or go to our website geelongharmonycomau and let us

Editorial

Congratulations to all who performed in the Western District Choral Festival hosted by The Colac Chorale on May 22nd Read

about the festival in the report from The Colac Chorale on Page 2

Yesterday was the second Singing the Classics for 2016 attended by a large turnout of choristers and light opera aficionados from

around the district and Melbourne John Stubbings (star of many shows presented by GSODA Geelong GampS and Lyric Theatre)

directed the group through a selection of favourite choruses from light operas and musicals including Die Fledermaus The Gipsy

Baron and The Sound of Music before inviting Margaret Hughes Musical Director of the Geelong U3A Choir to conduct a

comic piece Painless Opera by Phyllis Wolfe-White This had the group in stitches as they worked their way through a medley of

popular operatic tunes to words like ldquoI never did like opera They always sing too highrdquo (O Mia Babbino Carordquo Puccini) Anne

Pilgrim (founder and co-ordinator of For the Joy of Singing the Classics) was a most accomplished accompanist With the popu-larity of singing songs from the shows itrsquos likely that Singing the Classics 2017 will feature another chance to sing your favourite

choruses and songs

There are fewer reports that usual in this edition of The Choral Grapevine If therersquos not one from your group please ask your

THE GEELONG CHORALE The Geelong Chorale performed a program of English and

French romantic music on Sunday April 17 at St Pauls Anglican Church Geelong The wonderful acoustic

enabled us to produce a lovely concert for which we

received much commendation The concert opened with

the English component - I was Glad Song for Athene and God is Gone Up Vaughan Williams Valiant for Truth

was very well received and we repeated this wonderful

work at the Western District Choral Festival The first half concluded with Psalm 148 by Holst The second half

comprised French music - four lovely motets by Maurice

Durufle and the beautiful Solemn Mass by Louis Vierne

We were fortunate to be accompanied on the organ by Dion Henman One could almost imagine we were singing

at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris where Vierne was

organist Dion also played Prelude on Psalm 37

by Herbert Howells in the first half and Toccata from

Suite Gothique by Louis Boellmann in the second half

Our next performance was at the Western District Choral

Festival where we also performed Waltzing Matilda

Special thanks to the Colac Chorale for their excellent

organisation of the festival and we are already looking

forward to 2017 in Apollo Bay

Our next concert When Icicles Hang is on Saturday July 30 at 630pm It is a cafe concert at the Geelong Racing

Club Over the course of the evening we will sing music

about winter The title piece is a set of 6 Elizabethan

poems set to music by John Rutter The music may be about winter but the atmosphere and meal will be warm
