“PASTOR-LEE” THOUGHTS

What do you think about when you hear the word “theology”?

Does it bring about some boring sermon or talk about some deep

issues regarding one’s faith? Does it bring about the idea of trying to

read an article that has words that are t---h---i---s-------l---o---n---g?

Does it bring about the image of thick books collecting dust on a

bookshelf? Well, theology doesn’t have to be those things. Theology

can be a joyful experience of seeking after God and learning more

about him.

According to http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/theology the word “theology” literally

means “the study of religious faith, practice, and experience: the study of God and God's relation to the

world: a system of religious beliefs or ideas.” Breaking the word down we have two Greek words:

THEOS = “God” + LOGIA = “the study of”

Therefore we get “the study of God” as the briefest and most precise definition of this word.

But, the real question is: What does theology have to do with me? We have to be careful to not

get bogged down with the details of trying to understand difficult concepts in the Bible that we aren’t

living the faith God has given us on a daily basis. This can be true for all of us. Sometimes we don’t

have answers to some questions. It’s okay to not have all the answers.

Throughout this month I will be preaching on one of the magnificent chapters in the Bible – the

8th chapter of Paul’s Letter to the church in Rome. Romans 8 has so much for us to “chew” on that I

would like to take this opportunity to dissect it a little for us. Sometimes Romans is considered to be

Paul’s “theological statement” because of all the “theology” throughout the letter. This is true, but more

importantly there are so many things we can learn and apply to our lives by understanding this chapter.

The sermon titles and passages are found in the “June Worship Services” article on the cover of this

month’s “Sonshine News”. Read and meditate on the Scripture verses prior to coming to church. It will

give you a little “head’s up” prior to the

message.

In His Service,

Pastor Lee

WEDNESDAY NIGHT

BIBLE STUDY CONTINUES

The Wednesday Night Adult Bible Study continues

to meet at 7:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room led by

Pastor Lee. The study focuses on the “Faith

Lessons” DVD series presented by Ray Vander

Laan. Mr. Vander Laan is a teacher-historian that

has taken tour groups to locations in the Middle

East and Mediterranean region and taught them

about the culture, history, and context of the Bible

pertaining to the specific biblical location. We will

be finishing the last volume of the series this

month. It is called: “Walking With God in the

Desert.” The last video in the series is called

“There’s Hope in the Desert.” We will be having

“Pastor’s Favorites” for the remainder of the month.

These will be repeats of Pastor Lee’s favorite

lessons from the various volumes. Come and be

challenged in your faith through these wonderful

lessons. There is always a “Faith Lesson”

following the video to challenge us.

All are welcome to attend. If you have never come

to the Wednesday Night Adult Bible Study we

would love to have you join us. Each lesson is

independent of the others. We look forward to

seeing you there!

JOKE OF THE DAY A single guy decided that life would be more fun if he had a pet, so he went to the pet store and told the owner

that he wanted to buy an unusual pet. After some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede, which came

in a little white box to use for his house. He took the centipede home and found a good spot for him., then

decided to start off by taking his new friend to church with him.

So, he asked the centipede, “Would you like to go to church with me today? We’ll have a good time” But, there

was no answer. This bothered the man a little bit, but he waited a few minutes and asked again, “How about

going to church with me and receive blessings?” Again, there was no answer from his new friend, so he waited a

few more minutes thinking about the situation. The guy decided to invite the centipede one last time. This time

he put his face up against the centipede’s house and shouted “HEY IN THERE, WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO TO

CHURCH WITH ME AND LEARN ABOUT GOD?”

This time, a little voice came out of the box. “I heard you the first time! I’m putting my shoes on!”

JUST STAY

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside.

"Your son is here," she said to the old man.

She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing

outside the oxygen tent.

He reached out his hand.

The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man's limp ones, squeezing a message of love and

encouragement. The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed.

All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man's hand and

offering him words of love and strength.

Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile.

He refused.

Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital

- the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and

moans of the other patients.

Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words.

The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died.

The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse.

While she did what she had to do, he waited.

Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her.

"Who was that man?" he asked.

The nurse was startled,

"He was your father," she answered.

"No, he wasn't," the Marine replied. "I never saw him before in my life."

"Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him?"

"I knew right away there had been a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn't here.

When I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I

stayed."

I came here tonight to find a Mr. William Grey. His son was killed in Iraq today, and I was sent to inform him.

What was this gentleman's name?

The nurse with tears in her eyes answered,

"Mr. William Grey ..."

The next time someone needs you ... Just be there. Stay.
