THE CIRCUIT RIDER Vol. 14, No. 5 June 2014 FROM THE PASTOR Reverend Livingstone Dore “The world is round and the place which may seem like the end, may also be the beginning.” -Ivy Baker Priest Well, this is it! After serving Chamberlayne Heights UMC for seven wonderful years, my time as pastor will come to an end on June 15th. Change is one of those things I’ve preached about in my sermons or wrote about in my pastor’s letter for the monthly newsletter. Change is the one thing that is constant in life. And while it is constant, it is also an unsettling part of life. No matter how old or young, we all have that in common. Don’t believe me? Well, just take a look at your most recent photo and compare it to one from a year or two ago. Notice the change? The itinerant nature of our pastoral ministry is a reminder to all of us pastors that we better get accustom to change. No matter how long we stay in one place, eventually we must move on. I have been doing some reminiscing – my first sermon here, the visitations, funerals, baptisms, weddings, receiving new members on profession of faith or transfer, the many meetings, small group studies…the list goes on. How can I not feel a sense of sadness? And yet, I am looking forward to my time of new beginning. So, in the days and weeks ahead, you will be welcoming your new pastor and family. I know you will love and care for them as you have loved and cared for Michele and I. I thank you in all love and sincerity for the time we have had together. I ask one request of you: please keep us and this church as well as my new church in your prayers as we all go through this transition – this change. Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing, to the only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now for ever. THE CIRCUIT RIDERVol. 14, No. 5June 2014

FROM THE PASTOR Reverend Livingstone Dore

“The world is round and the place which may seem like the end, may also be the beginning.” -Ivy Baker Priest

Well, this is it!After serving Chamberlayne Heights UMC for seven wonderful years, my time as pastor will come to an end on June 15th.

“Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing, to the only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now for ever. Amen.” (Jude 24-25)RSV

Gratitude

Our thanks to Livingstone

Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV says “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens.” We can look to this verse for comfort in this time of pastoral transition. It reminds us that change is an inevitable pattern in life and that God is in the changes around us. The members of the Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee would like to thank Livingstone for his devotion to CHUMC over the last seven years. His steady leadership has helped our congregation as we faced many challenges. He has inspired us with his thought-ful sermons, engaged us with small group studies, visited us in our moments of need, comforted us in our grief, led us in singing with his beautiful tenor voice and shepherded us through endless committee meetings. There is a time for everything and this is the time to say goodbye and to wish him and Michele blessings on their journey.

Senior ConnectionsUnfortunately, for the Senior’s meeting on May 8, Bill Young called in that morning, sick. But we were so fortunate that our own Ralph Lett came to our rescue and he shared his wonderful power point presentation “Bird’s Eye View Over Richmond” that he had planned to give at our June meeting. This was a very interesting program and we thank Ralph so very much!

The Seniors will meet Thursday, June 12 at noon. We will have a covered dish lunch and then have Bill Young’s presentation of “Prisoner of War” depicting George W Finley’s capture at Gettysburg and his life as he was held in six different federal prisons for two years. Come, bring a friend and enjoy this time with the Seniors.

We will not meet in July and August, but be ready to start a new season with the Seniors in September.

Family Night Dinner

June Fellowship Dinner ProgramA Walk in the Woods

A Photo Trip to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park

Please plan to join us on June 4 at 6 p.m. for a wonderful dinner and splendid program. My good friend, Daune Poklis, will delight us with a power point presentation of her trip to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park in Tennessee with the Virginia Native Plant Society (VNPS) in April of 2013. The group spent a week in the mountains with special guides taking them to different areas to see the unique flora found in the park.

Here is some information about our speaker: Daune Poklis grew up in a family that spent lots of time in the out of doors hiking and camping. She was a Girl Scout and has a BS in Biology. She is a Hanover Master Gardener, a volunteer at the LGBG and has been an active member of the VNPS for almost 20 years. Besides an interest in native plants, she also raises exotic orchids. However, ‘walks in the woods’ may still be her favorite activity. Daune is a past president of the local Pocahontas Chapter of VNPS. Check out the state website at www.vnps.org.

Come and enjoy some beautiful flower photos and learn about the natural history of this unique place.

See you on June 4th. Pat Brodie

UMTV: Earth Day every day at church NASHVILLLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — United Methodists have launched minis-tries across the United States that set an example of creation care. “God gave us a great gift. We should do our best to take care of it,” says a member of the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew, a historic United Methodist congregation in New York City.

He also left a note, signed “Matthew.” Steve Blow of The Dallas Morning News has the story.

I Love Growing Older But I’ll Never Grow Old

That’s the title of the book by Rev. J. Ellsworth Kalas which the combined Sunday School classes will read and discuss over the summer months. Rev. Kalas is a former United Methodist pastor and is now on the faculty of Asbury Theological Seminary.

Rev. Kalas explains, “Growing older is a process. Growing old is a conclusion. If you’re growing older you see some hope because you have perspective and you keep learning. If you’ve grown old, you may cynically think that times have never been as bad as they are now and that they can only get worse.

This book is about learning how to ‘make peace with where you are right now.’ It’s about learning from the past and then moving past it. It’s about growing—personally, spiritually, and in our relationship with God and with others. If we think properly about growing older, we’ll never have to grow old.”

We look forward to spending time reading the book and discussing it together with different facilitators leading each week. We will have the opportunity to share our ideas and experiences as we come together.

It is our hope that those of you not presently attending a Sunday morning class, will want to get involved in this study; after all, we are all on this aging journey together and we can all use some help along the way!

See you in class beginning June 1 at 9:45 a.m. for coffee and fellowship. Discussion will begin at 10:00 a.m. Books are available now. See Pat Brodie for a copy. We are asking a donation of $10 to cover the cost of the book, but you may give whatever you can. Don’t miss being in on the discussions.
