Come celebrate with our Future Leaders of Charlotte at the TOP 30 UNDER 30 Awards Celebration on Friday, June 19th at SUITE in the EpiCentre. The event begins at 8pm and continues until 11 pm.

My most memorial moment is when the Young Professionals Society of the Ronald McDonald House raised $94,000 in one
night at our Annual Red Tie Gala! It was almost double from the previous year. What are your hobbies or interest? I love exploring the Carolinas by hiking, camping and traveling around to historical sites. I really enjoy going to Panthers and Hornets games, spending time out at the White Water Center, and spending time with my 4 year old Boxer named Boca. Reading and crafting are also big interests of mine.

My favorite memory thus
far is when my little sister was excited to share her report card with me. After spending a few months together working on homework, I was so proud of her improvements. Her enthusiasm to share the good news with me is something I will not forget. What are your hobbies or interest? I like to travel, try new restaurants, dance, practice yoga, attend concerts, attend sporting events and be outdoors. When volunteering, I am most interested in helping children and feeding the hungry.

Watching our students graduate and seeing their faces have hope for the first time. Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list?
My bucket list is a map of the world. I have color coded pins that tell the stories of all the places I have been and all the places I want to go. What is a fun fact about yourself that no one knows? I won a pie eating contest when I was in high school. I love food. A lot. I hate anything grape or chocolate. I love sour patch kids. I will eat icing out of the container and I am terrified of clowns.

You meet these incredibly interesting people that, for one reason or another, are in these terrible circumstances.
Giving them a hot meal and a few minutes of conversation brings back a sense of normalcy for these people, which is something very cool.Anything else you would like us to know?I am also a member of Isabella’s Dream Team, a running team that fundraises for the Isabella Santos Foundation. Isabella passed in 2012 from Neuroblastoma, but her dream for a cancer free world is the mission of the foundation started in her name. When this little girl in a wheel chair who was a patient at the Levine Children's Hospital was sharing her story with me while I was doing her Makeup for a Photo-Shoot...Long story short, her reaction to seeing herself in the mirror was just everything...I had to step away to control my emotions and tears...it was a beautiful moment I’ll never forget!
ANNA BOVECompany: GMR MarketingPosition: Team Lowe’s Racing, Account Supervisor Age: 28During your time volunteering for a community activity or project, what is your most memorable moment?Lowe’s built a Habitat for Humanity house for a local Nevada family on-site at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this spring and that family
came to the track to receive the key and take in the sights and sounds on race day. It was such an awesome experience for my work and interest in the community to be so intertwined. Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list?Travel is always on my bucket list, so while I’ve seen a lot of the US, Central America, the Caribbean and Europe; visiting Africa and Asia are definitely up next. Hoping I can check Japan or Thailand off first!

Helping a good cause of any type is a memorial moment to me. I love seeing elders happy, I love seeing kids happy. Happiness
is contagious, especially when it is achieved by a good deed. The most memorable is fighting for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the United States. Teaching people this history of my ancestors is vital in preventing future genocides from happening. Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list?Build educational facilities and churches for all the less fortunate and war suppressed minorities around the world. Not sure when I will be financially capable to start on this dream but I hope that day will come soon.

What are your hobbies or interest? Sports, Biking, Traveling, Working out, and Fashion.

I try to give back through community involvement through work and in my free time through Church. It is important that everyone in the community does something small for someone every day. If everyone did this, the world would be a much better place.

I joined Salesforce and moved to Charlotte in November of 2013 to manage the Services engagement for one of our largest clients. I get to be onsite at their headquarters and collaborate with my client contacts every day.
It is extremely rewarding to be apart of such a great team and to work for a company that is truly changing the world through innovation and giving back. What is a fun fact about yourself that no one knows? I was in Marine Corps JROTC. I served as the Battalion Commander and won back to back state championships for physical fitness.

In your opinion, how do you contribute to the community? I thrive off of people connecting here in Charlotte, anyone I meet and value their cause – I want to assist them in any way I can. The Charlotte Hearing and Speech Center holds a fundraiser every year and I’ve been in attendance and contributing auction items so they can raise funds for those families with children who need cochlear implants or extended care.

from those who are or have been helped, it’s a feeling you can’t replicate, but I’ve experienced it many times. One of the more rewarding memories recently was packing boxes and working on the line at the Samaritan’s Purse – Operation Christmas Child. It’s amazing to see how much volunteer work goes into that operation. Giving back locally is always rewarding as well. Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list? Backpack Europe for at least a month.

HO Company: EKHO 3DPosition: Visual Effects SupervisorAge: 30During your time volunteering for a community activity or project, what is your most memorial moment?My first time speaking to film students about visual effects and how it affects the movie industry and seeing how captivated they were by the subject.
Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list? To camp underneath the Aurora Borealis.In your opinion, how do you contribute to the community?I enjoy speaking to students and helping them see what's possible when you infuse art with technology and how it can greatly expand or enhance the stories they want to tell through film. I also want to show that film can mean long lasting jobs for our community in many different sectors.

JAYA RENEE MULDREWCompany Name: Circa360 Position: OwnerAge: 27 What are your hobbies or interest? Meeting new people: I am definitely a people person. Volunteering really motivates me as well. There is just something exhilarating about helping others. Staying active is extremely important to me. In my spare time I play flag football, do yoga and attend teach dance classes.
Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list? Visiting the Blue Lagoon, the world’s largest sinkhole off the coast of Belize is at the top of my bucket list. Its’ beauty is unparalleled. In your opinion, how do you contribute to the community? I contribute by volunteering through Blondes VS. Brunettes (for Alzheimer’s), Big Brother/Big Sister, Hospitality House of Charlotte and through supporting other local charities by participating in 5ks.
KAITLIN KROGH Company: PhyreflyPosition: President and Co-FounderAge: 30During your time volunteering for a community activity or project, what is your most memorial moment?I recently helped with Charlotte’s Kids Code after school program via Tech Talent South and it was a blast! It was so rewarding to see the kids learn coding basics. During one
session in particular, they were learning HTML basics and got to create their own web pages. It was so cool to see all of their unique personalities come out through their web design. We saw everything from Harry Potter to rap to outer space themes!Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list? Travel to Argentina to visit wine country in Mendoza and the glaciers in Patagonia.

dental checkups and care to children. There was one little girl I really bonded with. I walked her through the entire process, and despite having to have several fillings, she was calm and happy. At the end, she was immensely proud of her “new smile” and couldn't stop showing it off to everyone. It was transformative to see how much difference can be made in a person's life just by donating a few hours of time. Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list? Live in Europe.
LATOYA EVANS Company: Bank Of America Corporate Position: Vice President of CommunicationAge: 29What are your hobbies or interest? Much of my spare time is spent volunteering and giving back to others. But when I am not doing those things, I enjoy reading, attending a variety of community events, decorating, baking cupcakes from scratch, traveling and shopping. So much shopping!
Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list? Certainly traveling to Paris, which will happen for my 30th next year. What is a fun fact about yourself that no one knows? I love to dance, and my taste in music spans so many genres. I even once trained as an opera singer in my teenage years.

community service project, or helping the “Blondes vs. Brunettes” organization surpass their prior year’s fundraising goal, each end result was truly a special moment for me. Watching each organization accomplish their goals and knowing that everyone’s effort was for a great cause is always a rewarding, unforgettable moment. Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list? Bungee jumping.

After the panel was complete one of the students stopped me
to let me know he had been going through some issues with his family and substance abuse. He told me my story had helped him understand that he doesn’t have to go through it alone. I felt if I could just reach one person in any audience it would be worth the time. Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list? Learn to play the guitar and sail Thailand. Likely not at the same time.

What is a fun fact about yourself that no one knows?
I was born with a variation of a cauliflower ear. It’s a joke in my family—a badge of toughness ‘earned’ by wrestlers in the fight—but bestowed on me at birth. In your opinion, how do you contribute to the community? I feel my biggest contribution is creating a place and a community, at Arrichion Hot Yoga where a wide demographic of people feel inspired, supported, and challenged to improve their physical well-being. At Arrichion, we truly believe that it’s the journey not the destination that counts.

The satisfaction of knowing I had raised thousands of dollars
and brought in hundreds of donors was gratifying but nothing compared to what was to come when I got a call saying one of my bone marrow donors was a match and my efforts had saved a life.What is a fun fact about yourself that no one knows? My proudest achievement in life was becoming a Freemason in EastGate Lodge 692 in Charlotte.

This is Mecklenburg County’s largest women’s shelter. I spent an evening
celebrating the holidays and handing out donated gifts to the mothers and children sheltered here. This was a touching experience that I’ll never forget. It helped motivate me to become more active in the community and join a 501 C3 like guys with ties. Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list? Visit all seven continents (well, maybe not Antarctica).What is a fun fact about yourself that no one knows? I’m fascinated with maps and geography – I can recite all 50 state capitals

We are always open to sponsoring events and fundraisers in the community. I single handily raised $135,000 for a state-of-the-art gym at a school for used and battered kids. The school is called The Crossnore School. The school surprised me by
dedicating the gym after me, known as the “Townes Mozer Fitness Center.” Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Brewing kombucha and beer on a larger scale and sharing it with the world via retail and wholesale distribution.Can your share one thing that is on your bucket list? Go see the Redwoods in California. In your opinion, how do you contribute to the community? My company has donated over now $20K to local charities in the past 8 months.

WHERE TO EAT South End is nothing if not eclectic. Friday nights are ruled by Food Truck Fridays, with local fare from all around the city. Luciano’s has you covered if you want sol-id, reasonably priced, home made Italian fare. Nan and Byron’s has the best burger I’ve ever eat-en in my life, plus they serve popcorn as a pre-dinner snack instead of bread. We can’t for-get Tupelo Honey, with its Asheville-esque charm and killer fried green to-matoes. If a French breakfast is what you crave, head over to Crispy Crepe, where the most difficult decision there is if you want sweet or savory. Wanting some-thing a bit more round? Owen’s Bagel has the steamed bagel sandwich you’re looking for. We often forget about Big Ben British Pub & Restau-rant, but if you haven’t tried this place yet, go; you’ll get addicted to their bangers and mash. Monsoon Thai Cuisine is across from the Pepsi plant and has a brilliant selection of authentic Thai food. If you want to go in a Mediterranean direction, head over to Greek Isles on Bland Street for authentic Greek Cuisine.

WHERE TO DRINK Breweries abound in South End, and if you’re like me, sometimes you want those breweries to be walking distance to home. Sycamore Brewery is now serving wine and recently extended their patio seating. Unknown Brewery also expanded their outside seating recently and are hosting a Bike and Brew every Saturday at 2:30. Wine Loft holds a selection of over 40 wines that you can taste by the glass, or over 100 by the bottle, which can be paired with their amazing menu. Oak Room, open on Saturdays from 10pm – 2am, offers VIP table service and hosts many special events. If you haven’t been yet, check out Lenny Boy Brewing Company, brewers of Kombucha, wild ales and organic beer.

WHERE TO Play South End is becoming a millennial playground. Between the brewer-ies and bars, restaurants and shops, there are plenty of places to let loose and play. The South End Neighborhood Association (SENA) hosts many community-organized events throughout the year such as movie nights, clean up days and socials. Historic South End, run by Charlotte Center City Partners, is responsible for the dynamic gallery scene and many events along the Light Rail. If you’re interested in yoga, you might be interested in one of the many yoga classes offered at various breweries in South End. Lenny Boy and Triple C Brewing are just a few places that offer post-work, pre-beer stretching in their taprooms. To get your fill of pool, pong and parties, Slate Billiards on Bland Street is the place to be. Various levels of membership allow you a range of access to table service and special events. The Art of Vape opened last year and stocks premium E-Cigs, Mechanical Mods, E-Liquid/E-Juice products, accessories and inspired apparel.

This bustling neighborhood grew up around the SouthPark Mall which opened for business in 1970 and the area surrounding the mall was once part of North Carolina’s then Governor, Cameron Morrison’s 3000 acre farm. WHERE TO Shop Knowing that it grew up around the mall it is easy to understand why SouthPark has some of the best shopping in the city. While SouthPark Mall is a great mall with many of the best brands around, it is not the on-ly place to shop. The Morrison Shopping Center has stores like The

In 2009, Charlotte, North Carolina was the largest city in the United States without its own brewery. Today, Charlotte is one of the fastest growing cities in the entire nation and has a craft beer scene to match. Charlotte and its surrounding areas are currently home to fifteen breweries with another dozen on the books to open in the very near future. The breweries in the Queen City, as Charlotte is efficiently called, are a diverse group providing something for every beer lover. Whether you are seeking traditional German or Belgium styles, or looking for popular IPA’s, Charlotte has you covered. You can even find experimental styles, barrel-aged selections, sours, organic beers, and other unique creations for those with a more adventurous palette. Craft beer is becoming a part of the very culture of the city, and each and every brewery prides itself on the quality of the beers. The Charlotte beer community is a closely knit group, even forming the Charlotte Brewers Alliance to help the city’s breweries tackle common obstacles. It is not uncommon to find beers from other breweries to feature beers from other breweries in their taprooms, and work together on collaborative projects. This unity is one of the major reasons the craft beer scene in Charlotte continues to gain national notoriety.

In the upcoming months the Queen City will see the doors open to several new breweries. In Charlotte’s South End, the Wooden Robot Brewery is in the final stages before opening, while soon afterwards, Charlotte will welcome Three Spirits Brewery. In the North Davidson, or NoDa, area of Charlotte, the opening of the Free Range Brewery is on the Horizon. In the Lake Norman area, just north of Charlotte, is looking to welcome multiple breweries in the near future. Serval other breweries are in the works in Gastonia, Denver, Mint Hill, and Matthews. This growth is seen not only in the rapid opening of new breweries, but in the continued expansion of existing ones. Charlotte’s oldest brewery, The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, recently opened its new 60 barrel facility. Their 25,000-square-foot Brauhaus is reminiscent of a German beer hall and sits on nearly nine acres. This new facility was recently voted the best brewery tour in the U.S. by USA Today. Not far from The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, Triple C Brewing has nearly doubled its brewing capacity and is beginning distribution into neighbor-ing areas such as Raleigh, NC. Another South End brewery enjoying continued growth is the Unknown Brewery. Their continued expansion includes not only additional tanks and increased production, but distribu-tion into neighboring states.

Just north of uptown Charlotte, the NoDa area is also seeing a rapid expansion in some of its breweries. Both NoDa Brewing Company and Birdsong Brewing have built new facilities that will allow them to nearly triple their current production. This in-creased production capability has also allowed both breweries to can addition-al brews for distribution. NoDa Brewing Company will be moving into a new 60 barrel, 32,000-square-foot facility that will allow them to double production. Birdsong, also moving just down the road, will be tripling its production from 10 barrels to 30 barrels. There facility will be three times the size of their previous facility at 17,000-square-feet. Not only is it a fun place to spend the weekend, but it also has an interesting history. Lake Norman came into existence between 1959 and 1964 as a byproduct of the construction of Cowans Ford Dam by Duke Energy. Lake Norman is 34 miles long and nearly 8 miles wide, it is the largest man made body of water in North Carolina. It touches 520 miles of shoreline in four counties; Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Catawba and Iredell.

WHERE TO EAT You never lack options for fare when you are relaxing at Lake Nor-man. With the savory scents wafting through the air you can't resist sam-pling some of the local foods. The restaurants range from casual and re-laxed, to fine dining by the lake. Family friendly places like Grilles Sports Café and Prosciutto’s Pizzeria and Pub offer affordable menus that are sure to please. If you are feeling more adventurous then Chop-lin’s Restaurant has an always-changing menu of seafood and steak. If you are not sure what you are in the mood for, or your friends can't de-cide on what type of food to eat, then Alton’s Kitchen is the only way to go; from chicken and waffles to delicious salmon they have something for every-one. WHERE TO DRINK Let loose at the Rusty Rudder while enjoying the live music and munching on some fried pickles at this lakeside bar. Jay’s at the Lake is another local watering hole known for their great service and making customers feel like family. The new kid on the block, Bayne Brewing Company is has quickly risen among the ranks and is a definite hot spot for the latest beer. For the wine lovers there is The Wine Cellar that offers fine wine and cheese tasting and creates a nice relaxed atmosphere. For a good mixed drink, you can't go wrong with Ice Martini Bar. It boasts a relaxed atmosphere and a pleasant break from franchises. Play a few rounds of Pool at Irish Cue and enjoy a frosty beer any day of the week, their claim to fame is that they have never been closed in 8,395 days, or 23 years. Bring your friends to Saeed’s Bar and Grill for a game of Volleyball and cool off with your drink of choice to loosen up for some Karaoke! Summer is here, and so it is time to gear up for what that means for your warm weather wardrobe. Summer is the most casual of the seasons for menswear, but that doesn’t mean it is a season to slack off when it comes to your personal style. This edition of The Style Guy features some of your most pressing warm weather sartorial questions.

WHAT IS YOURRECOMMENDATION FOR SUMMER FOOTWEAR?Bradley Rhyne: This may be a lit-tle controversial but… leave the flip flops for the beach, the pool and around the house…period. I get it…it’s easy to slide them on and go, and they are comfort-able and breathable in that mid summertime heat, but it is also can look little lazy/sloppy (sorry guys I don’t make the rules, I am just the messenger of percep-tion). My recommendation is if you are going out and about, to go with a loafer or driving shoe instead. Summer style is already so basic, so any opportunity you have to dress up your outfit, I would fully take it. In terms of how to wear loafers / driving shoes, they all go great with either chinos or shorts. An important note: definitely no socks showing, so your best bet is to go sock-less (keep this in mind for any airport travel, as you may not want to be barefoot go-ing through security)
HOW DO I “DRESS UP”WHEN IT’S HOT OUTSIDE?
Bradley Rhyne: Just because it is hot out-side, doesn’t mean you have to settle for a t-shirt and shorts. In fact, you can even take your outfit to another level by layer-ing up with a great sport coat (I know sounds crazy right?). Seriously, it just takes a little effort, and also a different type of fabric built for the summer months. Linen and cotton blend fabrics are perfect for the summer, as they are light in weight and much cooler than tra-ditional wool. Take it one step further by going with something “unconstructed”, meaning no shoulder pads and a lighter
construction all around. Additionally, going with a jacket that is unlined or half lined, will make your jacket light enough that it can be worn on even the most oppressive mid summer days. Be the guy rocking a lightweight jacket in the summer months, and
you are sure to turn heads in the best possible way.

I HAVE A FEW WEDDINGS COMING UP THIS SUMMER, WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?Bradley Rhyne: Any suit that is too dark seems a little out of place for sun-shine, so I recommend focusing on something lighter in color and fab-ric weight. A khaki or light grey suit would be my first choice (ones that fit great of course). They are both basic staples that look sharp and pol-ished, but are more sub-dued than anything that might be too formal. Fabric wise, go with a lightweight cotton or lin-en (as mentioned in pre-vious answer), as this will help keep you cool-er than a traditional suit.
WHAT IS YOURIDEAL“GO TO” OUTFIT
FOR THE SUMMER?Bradley Rhyne: A lightweight white or blue oxford (shameless plug that OLE MASON JAR makes one of the best oxfords around), some chinos or shorts, loafers and a leather strap watch is my go to summer outfit this year. The rea-son for being so basic? It is the base for whatever direction I want to go in, no matter the occasion. The white or blue shirt can be mixed with any color (ac-cessories or pants/shorts) in a more casual look, or are the perfect companion for throwing on a great patterned or textured lightweight sport coat for an event that might be a little dressier. Above all else, this outfit is a clean and clas-
sic look that will keep you cool and stylish no matter the situation.

WHAT’S YOURRECOMMENDATION FOR A GOODPAIR OF SUNGLASSES?Bradley Rhyne: The tried and true shades you can’t go wrong with are standard avia-tors (Ray Ban makes a great pair). Nothing says summer quite like a pair of ray ban aviators dangling from you shirt when not in use. Another classic look is something with a tortoise shell frame, as this also very versatile and a good look for just about anyone. What to stay away from; anything that is too bulky or colorful. Sunglasses are a complimentary accessory and necessities for protecting you from the elements, and so should be as subtle as possible and never overstated. Let the other details of your outfit help you stand out, and let the summer shades protect your eyes, not turn the heads of others.

The glass cases housing a variety of pastries turns the sternest adult instantly into a kid in a candy store. Once you finally made the decision on your pastry, you can pair it with an expresso, or delicious locally roasted coffee.

Growlers Pourhouse gives guests a simple formula of Craft Beer and Beer Food. Always packed with patrons, their Craft Beers are all American and you can even try some from their beer engine. Heist Brewery is surely one of NoDa’s favorite destinations for craft beer, creative cocktails, and twisted eats. A Belgian centric brewpub located in the heart of NoDa, the Heist Brewery experience begins the moment you walk through its doors. Offering a modern yet rustic atmosphere, where new flavors of beer, wood-fired specialties and contemporary cuisine blend perfectly.
With so many options of places to eat & drink in NoDa, it can overwhelm the senses. But be sure to stop at the Crepe Cellar Kitchen & Pub for sweet crepes, European entrées or carafes of wine and French press coffee. Solstice Tavern sports bar offers the coldest brews, a to-die-for Black & Bleu Pretzel Burger, 24 flat screens and a huge outside deck. Revolution Ale House serves up made from scratch fresh baked pizza & Mediterranean-style dishes, and offers 40 plus ales on draft and 60 different flavors by the bottle. Now if you’re not involved in the craft beer revolution, you’ve surely heard of it or experienced it in some way, shape or form. NoDa is known for its amazing selection of the best of beers! NoDa Brewing Company is the only brewery in town with deep roots in the brewing scene. Charlotteans seek out their many notable brands at bars across town (yeah, it’s so good, other bars serve it), but there’s no place like home; so when in NoDa, go and try a QC favorite, Hop, Drop ‘N Roll, Jam Session, Ramble on Red, Or Coco Loco. They have tastylicious seasonal brews and every Tuesday they roll out a NoDable small-batch beer that’s only available in-house. Your tolerance is the limit, so stop in NoDa for a Pint, a Bite and a whole lot of fun.

heart was content. Now it’s time to relax and enjoy the en-tertainment side of NoDa. The Neighborhood Theatre is the perfect setting to see a show from an old favorite or to discover a new band that energizes and excites you with live music from both local and national acts. Originally built as a movie theater in 1945 (Astor Theatre), it closed in the late 70s and un-derwent restoration in 1997 and converted into a live per-formance venue. Hookah Lounge with a full bar, books galore and great music. The Chop Shop hosts all types of live music events from every genre and an amazingly huge secret stage (not a secret, I just didn’t know about it af-ter my first visit), that if you’re lucky, you’ll get to witness your favorite band on! Now that Spring has sprung in the Queen City, you might find yourself in need of a cocktail fit for a patio. With the farmers markets now open, you can find a number of flavorful ingredients to add to your cocktails at home. The benefits of fresh ingredients are insurmountable, while not always the most convenient, fresh herbs and fruits can provide a pop of flavor that you wouldn’t normally get from a store bought syrup or liqueur. I got the opportunity to talk to Bob Peters from The Punch Room at The Ritz Carlton about his opinions on fresh and unique herbs and how we can incorporate them into our boozy beverages. Peters draws his inspiration to use fresh herbs from the seasons. “When your garden herbs starting popping up, you can’t help but to use them.” Spring and summer are his favorite seasons for cocktails and they can provide the most dynamic ingredients for his concoctions.

Many of us are used to seeing the fruits, herbs and even roots like ginger added to our cocktails but when I asked him about his most unusual ingredients Peters surprised even me. On his current cocktail list at the Punch Room, he has included a Miso Daiquiri on the menu. You read that correctly, miso, like the soup. “Miso is a very tradition-
al Japanese ingre-dient that adds the Umami (otherwise known as savory) characteristic to foods or in this case drinks. It is actually a fermented bean curd that you can find in paste form. It is one of the most amazing things that
I have ever created.” Peters accomplished this by mixing miso into a homemade mint syrup that is paired with fresh pressed grilled grape-fruit juice and locally made Queen Charlotte’s Reserve Rum that cre-ates a harmonious blend of sweet and savory flavors. If you’re like me, the thought of making a mint miso syrup at home seems daunting, this is the reason Peters has set out to give a crash course in mixology. He teaches foodies, cocktail connoisseurs and booze newbies at Earl’s Grocery once a month. During these infor-mative hour-long sessions, attendees can learn a multitude of differ-ent mixing techniques. Peters uses his experience behind the stick to encourage his students to explore flavors and methods. In the last few classes, attendees have learned how to taste the difference in bourbon and rye whiskey, how to make mint juleps for their Kentucky Derby party and most recently got to learn how to make herb infused simple syrups. It was here that I got schooled on the importance of herbal flavors and the chance to try something new.

There are unlimited fresh herbs one can use in their drinks such as lavender, thyme or rosemary but Peters has a favorite that your aren’t likely to find in your local dive bar, Thai Basil. Found fresh, Thai Basil
pairs well with most fruits and proves to be a very v e r s a t i l e ingredient to use. Pe-ters says “It has a beau t i f u l flavor that is perfect for spring
and summer cocktails, it’s an unexpected substitute for mint that cre-ates wonderful variations of your favorite Mojito or a Thai Julep. While these fresh herbs can offer copious amounts of flavor, some-times it is more convenient to make an infused syrup to use instead. “There are many recipes and applications where an herb syrup is perfectly acceptable. Herb infused syrups can be extremely beautiful and super convenient if making a ton of cocktails or you are hosting a party but there is nothing like fresh picked herbs,” says Peters. He adds that there are instances when you want subtle undertones of herbs instead of a more pungent flavor and in some cases, less is more.

HOW TO MAKE A THAI BASIL SIMPLE SYRUP - HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
• 4 cups of water • 2 cups of sugar • Thai Basil (small bunch) roughly chopped, stems removed • Depending on your tastes, you can make this simple syrup really sweet or a bit more savory so play around with the recipe. The ratio of water to sugar is 2:1, but feel free to add more sugar if you’d like. • Bring water to a boil, add chopped basil and steep for 10-15 minutes • Add sugar and stir until dissolved • Remove from heat • Strain into a clean jar or bottle. Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
THAI BASIL SMASH - HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
• 1.5 oz Espolon Blanco Tequila • Lime quartered • 2 oz Thai Basil Simple Syrup • A shaker, a muddler and a glass filled with ice
HERE’S HOW TO MAKE IT:
• Lightly muddle limes in a shaker • Add tequila, simple syrup and ice • Shake • Using a strainer, stain your newly made cocktail into the ice filled glass. • Garnish with a sprig or 2 of Thai basil and a lime wedge
