Haas Metal Engineering (HME), Inc., Topeka, Kansas, recently installed an automated Voortman cell for fabricating structural steel.

The 18-year-old firm, founded by Jon Haas, PE, specializes in the fabrication of structural and mis-cellaneous steel for the construc-tion industry. HME specializes in estimating, design, engineering, fabrication, painting and trucking and can provide or sub-contract erecting when needed. Examples of HME’s work include struc-tural steel for entire buildings/structures, canopies, mezzanines, stairways, handrails, ladders and more.

The new Voortman fabrica-tion cell, purchased through Black Rock Machinery, was acquired to support the continued growth of HME and to improve the firm’s efficiency and accuracy. The four Voortman components of the cell (drill, saw, coper and blaster) are tied together with a fully-auto-mated material handling system. At the beginning of this system, the steel or aluminum beams are loaded; next, the specs/programs are entered for each piece; and then the pieces move through all four operations without any further human interaction. HME’s system can handle I-beams, angle, channel, tubing and etc. up to 50” wide, 24” tall and up to 60’ long. “We have been very pleased with the Voortman cell and the service that we receive from Black Rock,” stated Jon Haas. “Each machine is interconnected and performs together, decreasing the number of touch points and improving the overall efficiency and accuracy of each project. The Voortman cell

has met all of our expectations.” HME, which is AISC (Ameri-

can Institute of Steel Construc-tion) certified, starts with beams up to 60’ in length, can fabricate trusses up to 100’ long and has an impressive array of equipment that can cut (hi-def plasma), weld (MIG & TIG), roll, form, bend, saw, and bend tube/pipe.

Rob Mohan, Production Manager, noted that all of HME’s welders are AWS-certified and

there are currently two AWS-cer-tified inspectors on staff. The firm also employees five Professional Engineers (PE). Additionally, they leverage 24 seats of various software for different projects.

HME’s team of nearly 150 works with iron, steel, stainless, aluminum and galvanized steel. HME also has its own fleet of 38 trailers and six tractors to handle deliveries in the region and across the country. The firm’s facility

sits on 12 acres and its building space will span 105,000 square feet after their expansion is com-pleted later this year.

HME’s project portfolio includes schools, hospitals, banks, churches, water plants, wastewater plants and government buildings.

The firm also runs two satellite of-fices: one in Denver and the other in Kansas City.

As he considered the growth of HME since starting the busi-ness in his garage nearly two decades ago, Jon Haas shared that “It’s important to surround your-

self with good people.” These “good people” have been Jon’s key to success.

HME can be contacted at (785) 235-1524; Fax (785) 235-3167; 2828 NW Button Road, Topeka Kansas 66618; [email protected]; www.HMEInc.net.

EDITORIAL - RAY LIPPE, EDITOR

Are you a manager? Do you always take vacations?

We bring this up because it’s the vacation season and we took a short quiz in the June 2014 issue of Inc. Magazine. One of the eight questions was this: “When I go on vacation, I...:

A. What vacation? I don’t think the place can run without me on-site.

B. Take my phone and laptop and check my e-mail multiple times per day.

C. Put a colleague in com-mand and say, ‘Only contact me in an emergency.’”

The article was titled “Are You Really A Micromanager? To find out for sure, take our quiz. That is, if you’re not too busy do-ing everyone’s job.”

Naturally, you answered “C”. But, some managers assume most employees are unmotivated, needing constant prodding and oversight to get the job done. And, sometimes they’re right depending upon the company’s ability to hire competent people and follow up with more than adequate training practices.

However, if you’ve hired capable people and given them

the training they need, most people will react positively when allowed to take a little more responsibility.

Keith Murnighan, a North-western University professor and author of “Do Nothing! How to Stop Overmanaging and Become a Great Leader,” says leaders are always searching for ways to be more effective.

“Although research suggests that trusting people more is a high-ly effective way to increase team performance, trusting more is not natural. Leaders’ natural tenden-cies are to be particularly cautious because trusting means taking risks that they can easily avoid.”

In an internet post May 29, Murnighan writes, “I don’t know how successful I’ve been, but I now have cool, new information that strengthens the trust argu-ment. In fact, I can’t help thinking that if Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger can’t convince you to trust more, no one can.”

We understand what he’s talk-ing about because we happened to have attended the May 3 Berkshire Hathaway shareholders’ meeting. Charlie Munger, vice chairman of Berkshire, told shareholders that, “By the standards of the world, we overtrust. So far it has worked very well for us even though some might see it as a weakness.”

Berkshire doesn’t hire law-yers or any special staff to ensure employee compliance. Munger said they just put in basic controls and do their homework very well so they can hire competent people that can be trusted. Even with 300,000 employees, the company has no human resources depart-ment or any general counsel to check on the different work units.

Both Buffett and Munger said they had learned the hard way that not all people are trustworthy, but they still feel their trusting ap-proach pays off best in the long run.

(Continued on next page)

24 MID-AMERICA COMMERCE & INDUSTRY

Their philosophy is to locate well-managed companies that fit their needs, buy into them for the long haul and then leave them alone. They quickly acknowl-edged that this practice will not work with every company’s goals. According to Murnighan, micro- managing is not only inefficient, but people generally react badly to being so closely controlled. “If you want team members to be motivated, committed and driven, looking over their shoulder all the time is not the way to get it.”

So, in the end, over-managing is only natural for most of us and it’s hard to change. If someone thinks they might need to ease up a bit, it’s best to start slow. Let go of one small project at a time and see how things work out, Mur-nighan suggests.

This advice might be easier said than done, depending upon your occupation. If you’re talking about teamwork at an insurance company or restaurant it’s fairly easy. On the other hand it has to be hard to turn a young tool and die maker loose on a chunk of metal costing thousands of dol-lars... or tell a beginning brain surgeon, “You should be ready. The next ones yours.” What could go wrong?

Anyway, enjoy your vacation whether it’s at the plant, checking in daily from Costa Rica or iso-lated at a Canadian lake fishing.

The Mid-America chapter of the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) held its annual spring golf outing at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Joplin, Missouri, on May 22nd. The Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) is a trade association that supports and represents the metals industry, including met-als producers, distributors, pro-cessors and, to a lesser extent, the interests of metals users.

Because its primary mem-bership consists of metals service centers, businesses that inventory and distribute met-als for industrial customers and perform first-stage process-ing, MSCI is ideally situated to identify and respond to the networking, educational, public policy, and research needs of the entire metals community. The Mid-America chapter also raises funds for scholarships at some of its events.

ACC Inc., Russellville, Ar-kansas, continues to grow and add equipment.

The 19-year-old firm offers CNC cutting (laser & waterjet), fabricating and powder coating.

A Trumpf 7036 CNC press brake has been installed and 12 welders now work in-house.

“We needed to keep up with our growth and expand our capac-ity,” stated John Duvall, plant manager and 17-year veteran. “The ISO certification has also helped our business.”

The new Trumpf 7036 (pur-chased from Icon Machine Tool) was needed for its speed, accuracy and its reduced footprint.

We have purchased a lot of equipment from Icon over the years and have been pleased with their service and equipment,” noted Duvall.

Other equipment at ACC’s 36,000-sq.-ft. facility includes four Trumpf 5,000-watt laser cutting systems, a Flow abrasive waterjet system, press brakes, iron workers and welding stations.

The laser systems can run with air, oxygen or nitrogen.

The powder coating line features: a Nordson powder booth with two Surecoat guns; a 5-stage pre-wash system; dryoff and cur-ing ovens and a capacity for parts up to 33”w x 86”h.

“We can cut, bend, weld and powdercoat entire assemblies,” noted Robert Crabtree, CEO. “Our commitment to quality re-mains key. Our great crew is a big factor in our success.”

The company serves a wide range of industries including: defense; automotive; medical; electronic; construction; recre-

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon recently signed legislation officially changing Linn State Technical College of Mis-souri’s name to the State Technical College of Missouri.

The legislation was introduced to better reflect the college’s statewide role.

Enrollment at the college consistently represents over 80 percent of Missouri counties and its graduates fuel the state’s technical workforce.

“This name change truly represents our service to the entire state,” said Dr. Donald Claycomb, STC Presi-dent.

Enrollment at the college has grown 58 percent over the last 16 years. As the only state technical college in Missouri, State Tech’s curriculum balances hands-on technical courses with a strong foundation in commu-nication, problem solving, decision-making and critical thinking. In 2012 alone, STC facilitated over $900,000 in workforce development through customized training for Missouri businesses.
