HIDDUR MITZVAHYou may never have heard of the concept of “hiddur mitzvah” but I assure you that it is an integral part of your everyday Jewish life. When you shine the candlesticks so that they glow brightly on Friday night….that is “hiddur mitzvah,” the beautification of a mitzvah. When we at Temple Israel created Judaism’s very first, fully illuminated, full-color prayer book….that was “hiddur mitzvah.” When you purchase an intricately embroidered tallit on a mission to Israel….that is “hiddur mitzvah.” So you see, “hiddur mitzvah,” although under-appreciated, may just be one of our most intrinsic Jewish values. Thus, we are very pleased to announce that this summer at Temple Israel will be a season of “hiddur mitzvah” as we beautify, renovate and transform our sanctuary, Wasserman Atrium and Herman Hall.

Why are we doing this? You see, in this, our 75th year, we are only too aware that this wonderful building of ours is almost 40 years old, and thus beginning to show some well-earned wear and tear. Temple Israel is not a fancy place. We do not need Carrera marble and gold fixtures, but we are a place of mitzvah, and we do want the mitzvot, the simchas celebrated here to feel fresh, joyful, uplifting, modern, beautiful and new ….“hiddur mitzvah.”

The plans for the sanctuary are simple but stunning, meant to focus the worshiper’s attention even more intensely on our magnificent and iconic ark. The atrium will be welcoming and warm and yet, at the very same time, impressive and inspiring. The Goodman Museum shelves will be replaced with modern, state of the art display cases in order to more effectively show off our ever-growing Judaica collection. And now that the quality of the décor will match the quality of our new caterer’s epicurean delights, I daresay that Temple Israel will once again become the place to celebrate your family’s simchas and life cycle celebrations.

We feel so very blessed that generous donors have made this beautification of mitzvah possible without dipping into the temple budget (although a few more generous donations would not hurt…hint, hint!). Shari and Stanley Finsilver, along with Francis and Kenneth Eisenberg, are our lead donors for this transformational project. If you see them around, please let them know how grateful we all are for their vision and their generosity. Furthermore, past temple president Stanley is also donating his time, energy and considerable expertise to serve as general contractor at no cost to the temple! To say that we are indebted to him (and to Shari for lending him to us yet again) would be a gross understatement.

This process of redecoration will also be an opportunity for rededication, as we find new and even more artistic and moving ways to thank and memorialize the many generous gifts that have built and will continue to build this holy congregation.

Closing down the sanctuary wing for the summer will take some sacrifice, of course. Most keenly in that the somewhat smaller Korman Hall will now have to serve as the rain venue for our very well-attended outdoor services. For that reason, we are moving many of our aufrufs and baby-namings to our Shabbat morning services, which will now be held outdoors in the Eisenberg Courtyard and will include a bagels and lox oneg Shabbat. We are calling these newly reinvigorated services “Boker Or: Sunshine Shabbat with Bagels & Lox.” We have wanted to bring the beauty and excitement of our outdoor Kabbalat Shabbat services to Saturday mornings for some time, and this has given us the perfect opportunity to do so. We are excited about this new offering and believe that it will be embraced by everyone from families with younger children for whom evenings can be difficult, to adults seeking a more powerful Saturday morning worship experience.

So shine up those Shabbat candlesticks, put on that glorious multi-colored tallit and join us as we engage in the process of “hiddur mitzvah,” the beautification of the mitzvot. In the meantime, however…..please excuse our dust!

Rabbi Paul Yedwab

EYEGLASS RECYCLINGTemple Israel is pleased to partner with the Lions Club of Novi in an eyeglass recycling program. Lions have been collecting glasses for more than 80 years. Refractive errors can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, yet millions in developing nations lack access to basic eye care services. Lions have recognized the urgent need for corrective lenses and continue to lend their support to the Lions Recycle for Sight Program. Congregants may drop off eyeglasses in the drop box at the Tyner entrance.

INK CARTRIDGE RECYCLING Temple Israel is part of a cartridge recycling program, which provides an easy method for recycling used ink jet and laser print cartridges. Congregants may drop off their empty ink jet and laser cartridges in the collection bin at Temple’s Tyner entrance. Please remove your cartridges from boxes or bags before placing them in the box. Thank you for your participation!

POP TAB COLLECTIONTemple Israel will continue to collect pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House of Detroit on an ongoing basis. Please help by collecting and bringing your pop tabs to the drop box at the Tyner School entrance! Collecting pop tabs helps support the operations of Ronald McDonald Houses. Questions? YOUTHIn Review - YFTI City Trip to Niagara Falls YFTI’s City Trip to Niagara Falls was a splashing good time! We had an amazing weekend together exploring the town, learning, praying, and laughing together. The theme of the weekend was “The Future.” Our chairs and other YFTI leaders created and ran great programs that helped us pinpoint how our Jewish identities play into other life decisions. In addition to great food, we had a great time getting sprayed by the falls on the Maid of the Mist boat tour, spending some time in the wax museums, arcades, and other attractions in downtown Niagara, and getting to watch our friends get hypnotized by our Saturday night hypnosis show! Overall, the weekend was a great success. Thanks to all who put in lots of hard work to make it a great City Trip!

Temple Israel Early Childhood Center is celebrating the careers of two incredible teachers who are retiring this year. They both have been a part of our legacy

and success for many years, and we will miss the meaningful contributions they have made to our educational team.

Paula Mellin started in 1991 after spending many years in the public school system. When she came to Temple Israel’s Early Childhood Center, Paula’s creative energy and zest to find humor in learning has made her class a remarkable experience for many children. Paula has an amazing ability to help her students develop a love of learning, recognizing

that curious children invite expanding knowledge.

Janie Starkman came to Temple in 1995. She started as an assistant and quickly moved to lead teacher. Shortly after she began, she started her remarkable career in Kindergarten. She is proud to have multiple children from the same family attend her class. Janie’s devoted love for her students and her enthusiastic desire for each child to experience their

own success is a treasure her children will carry with them.

Temple Israel thanks them both for their dedication, hard work, and passion for children and Jewish Early Childhood Education.

We wish them well on the next phase of their lives and hope their time in the Temple Israel Early Childhood Center will continue to

bring them joy and fulfillment.
