Message from the President
Alicia BattlePresident [email protected], I can’t believe that I have already gotten to the 3rd chapter of my
book, JLA President. This chapter is titled “How are we doing? … Are we developing people? … What did I forget?”
During our mid-year leadership retreat earlier this month, I asked our leadership team to list their accom-plishments (i.e. Annual Plan updates) of the year so far, as well as any remaining goals. As leaders, we have a tendency to measure success in numbers, dollars raised, hours worked, and a list of programs implemented or not, versus the (more important) personal values instilled and skills learned.
At the end of the year, my hope is that what we have succeeded in setting a tone of a leadership team that cares - about each other, about every member, about our community. A tone that will foster the continued importance of learning and training. Each meeting, each conversation, each social, each disagreement is an opportunity for personal growth each year in the League.
My current chapter has brought me back full circle to our mission:
The JLA is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
The first part is taking care of ourselves by gaining the skills needed to reach our diverse and economically challenged community. Have you experienced this type of learning this year?
By Applied Corporate Governance:
Dedicating yourself to continuous learning can help you achieve ever higher levels of consciousness, a goal of every great leader: awareness of your inner power, the connectedness of everything and therefore your ability (actively or uncon-sciously) to affect a situation and people just by “being”.
To be a conscious leader is to be growing and learning every day. Personally, I try to read at least a chapter or two a day of books on a range of subjects from leadership and success to psychology and emotional intelligence and from neurosci-ence to history. This goes beyond increasing knowledge, it brings about new insights, which as we become more aware and open to new ideas becomes ever more common and the insights more revealing.
Learning and growing,
Alicia BattlePresident
Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. -John F. Kennedy

Junior League Journey
I grew up in Athens and had known about the League since my youth. My mother actively volunteered and taught me early about giving back, so I was excited to attend the New Member Information Session. As a provisional, I jumped right in and wanted to soak up every piece of information. Our provisional train-ers suggested I look at leadership for my first active year which is exactly where I ended. My path in Junior League was one where I jumped in “head” first! I didn’t dip my toes in… I went right for it.
My first active year, I used my professional strengths and served as the Marketing Committee Chair. I remember my nerves at our first committee meeting – here I was a first year active with members who had been in the league three, four and five years. That year, I learned a lot about myself as leader and how the league “communicates” within itself.
In summer 2009, I attended the AJLI Area III conference in Macon. It was such a wonderful training opportunity! I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend soaking up the informa-tion from other leagues and the guest speaker, Vicki Clark. She made my passion for what we do grow even more and I couldn’t wait to get back to Athens and make a difference!
In my second and third year, I served as Co-Chair and Chair of Community Partners. I personally grew so much during my time on the board. I had many wonderful men-tors, including Tiffany Hines and Natalie Glenn who taught me the art of “the ask.” They helped me not only grow per-sonally that year but also professionally. I also learned about the interworking of the board – I understood the bigger picture. The “why” and “how” we do what we do and how we do it. The best interest of the league is always put first – not someone’s own personal agenda. I served for two years at the board level – it was a lot of work but very rewarding!
My fourth and fifth active years, I served on Nominating as a nominating member and as the Provisional Co-Trainer and Trainer.
Nominating was an eye opening experience. I learned how the board and committee chairs are slated. We were shaping the league’s leadership and possibly the direction the league would go with our selection of leaders. I learned to look at a member and take the qualities she has to offer and place her in the best fit for her and the league. This is
such a carefully and thoughtfully done process. You must dive into what will work best for the league and for that member who is nominated or who may have applied. It was one of the hardest jobs I held in the league.
Serving as the Provisional Co-Trainer and Trainer were my favorite positions. I loved being a cheerleader for our league and helping our new members grow. My goals during my time in this role was for the new members: to enjoy and learn about the league, light the same fire and passion for our league that I have, learn about themselves as future members , determine their paths in JLA and to make last-ing lifelong friendships as I have done. I loved being able to watch future leaders develop and see women find their place in our league!
In June 2012, I helped chair the AJLI Area III conference that our league hosted in Athens. It was such a wonderful experience to put on this conference and work with an amazing group of women. We made our league and Athens proud!
In my sixth and now seventh active years, I have served as a member of Placement and Membership Support. It has been nice to sit back as “Molly Member” and watch the women in my provisional classes continue to grow and serve as league leaders. I have also served this year as Transfer Liaison and enjoy being able to share my enthusiasm with our transfers and to help them find their place in Athens.
I have enjoyed my time in the league. I have learned to be a better “listener”, learned that my way or someone else’s may not be the best path (you have to look at what works best for our league), learned to be a better friend, co-work-er, volunteer and community member. The league has given me so much and I am thankful for that. I have gained many new friends and colleagues whom I admire tremen-dously. And most importantly – remember you must have a servant’s heart in all you do. Be eager to serve others - you will not regret helping make a difference in our league and in our community!

Tips for Proper Children’s Dental Health
As February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, Dr. Harter with Classic City Orthodontics has some great tips for parents when it comes to their children’s dental health.
The American Dental Association recommends that a child visit the dentist by his or her first birthday, while baby (primary) teeth are emerging. Your family dentist or a pediatric dentist can alert you to any concerns about how the teeth and jaws are developing. However, sometimes parents are the first to recognize a problem with the alignment of teeth and jaws.
Dr. Harter follows the American Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation that children visit his office at the first recognition of an orthodontic problem, but no later than age 7. By then, a child has enough perma-nent teeth for Dr. Harter to determine whether an orthodontic problem exists or is developing. Some ortho-dontic problems may be easier to correct through interceptive treatment if they’re found early. A check-up no later than age 7 gives Dr. Harter the opportunity to recommend the appropriate treatment at the appropriate time.
While orthodontic treatment most often begins between the ages of 9 and 14, some children’s orthodontic problems can benefit from earlier treatment. If it appears that your child will need treatment at some point, Dr. Harter can advise you about the best time to begin. If early treatment is indicated, it can give Dr. Harter the chance to: guide jaw growth; lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth; correct harmful oral hab-its; improve appearance and self-esteem; guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position; and improve the way lips meet.
It’s not always easy to tell when your child has an orthodontic problem, says Dr. Harter. Even teeth that look straight may be hiding an unhealthy bite. Here are some clues that may indicate the need for orthodontic attention: • Early or late loss of baby teeth • Difficulty in chewing or biting • Breathing through the mouth • Thumb-sucking • Crowded, misplaced or blocked-out teeth • Jaws that are too far forward or back • Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth • Protruding teeth • Upper and lower teeth that don’t meet, or meet in an abnormal way • An unbalanced facial appearance • Grinding or clenching of the teeth
Not everyone needs orthodontic treatment, but if your child does need help, a check- up no later than age 7 will help Dr. Harter provide the most appropriate treatment at the most appropriate time. Dr. Harter’s new patient exams are complimentary and may be scheduled by calling 706-549-4748. Please visit his web site at www.classiccityorthodontics.com to learn more!
