Junior Infants
Dear Parents,
We hope you and your families have been keeping well since.
It is hard to believe that we are in the middle of June! We know that it is getting more and more
challenging for you to keep the children motivated to do school work. By now, the boys and girls are
most likely feeling tired and are looking forward to the holidays, and a break from the books!
With this in mind, we have included some relaxation/mindfulness activities for them to do this week.
This will be our last week assigning work like this. Next week, we will have our virtual Active
Schools (Home) Week. That will be something for the children to look forward to.
Below is the plan for the week beginning Monday, 15th June. Again, please do not worry if you are
unable to complete all tasks/activities provided and work at a pace that suits your child.
Just a quick note in relation to the books – please feel free to use them. We are still including the
pages from the workbooks in our plans for those people who may not have been able to collect their
children’s books. Your child is free to work away in them.
Many thanks once again for all the emails, photos, videos and work samples. It is great to see the
children’s work and we hope the feedback that we send back to you helps to motivate them. Keep up
the great work girls and boys.
As always, know that we are here for you to help in any way we can. If you have any questions,
please email us.
Have a good week and keep smiling girls and boys.
Take care of yourselves and each other,
E. Loughnane [email protected]

Suggested Daily Activities
These activities are mostly the same as previous weeks, as we feel this will be of continued
benefit in order to maintain routine.
Calendar time – chat about what day, date, month, season it is, the weather, draw a picture/write a
sentence to describe the weather. You could extend this activity by asking your child what day comes
2
before Wednesday, after Friday etc., what days make up the weekend. Calendar time will be part of
Tuesday’s daily plan but you can do it anytime you wish.
Sound bag - review letter sounds, names, songs and actions, suggest words that start with specific
letters, make and write 2-4 letter words using letters sounds, these can include nonsense words!
Reading time - choose an ebook each day. You might want to focus on the same one for a few days.
Oxford Owl has a huge collection to choose from. www.oxfordowl.co.uk
You will also find free stories and ebooks for the beginner reader on www.clarkeness.com
Before reading, draw your child’s attention to the title, author, illustrator and invite them to make
predictions. After reading, encourage your child to talk about the story, sequence it, draw the
beginning, middle and end, discuss/draw their favourite parts, suggest an alternative ending, make an
‘I wonder’ statement, e.g. I wonder where the farmer went to.
Teach Your Monster to Read is also free at the moment and is a great resource for reading.
www.teachyourmonstertoread.com
Your child can use this independently to consolidate letter sounds and further develop their reading
skills.
Free writing – encourage your child to write/draw for fun, make shopping lists, write cards for
relatives, write their news, make sentences or create stories. Encourage them to match the sounds to
the letters as they write and praise their efforts. Our focus is on approximate spelling at this stage.
Letter/Number formation – practise forming letters/numbers in a variety of ways, e.g. rainbow
letters/numbers, playdough, whiteboards, tracing letters on a sandwich bag with paint inside, using
different materials (cereal box, old cardboard etc.).
Playtime – continue to encourage your child to engage in free play, make jigsaws, constructions
(lego, blocks, forts), playdough, dress-up, skipping, jumping, dancing. All these are invaluable to
develop your child’s gross and fine-motor skills as well as providing opportunities for oral language
development.
Roleplay – Continue to encourage your child to spend time in role as characters from a shop.
Encourage your child to put price tags on their toys up to 5cent and encourage them to act as
customers using coins to purchase their toys.
Enjoy reading aloud to your child for at least 15 minutes per day.

English
Calendar Time – https://www.starfall.com/h/holiday/calendar/?sn=main News – Ask your child to write their news using the following format: Today is Monday. It is a ____ (sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy) day. We had a nice weekend. You can model writing this for your child. Ask your child to help you with the spelling. Remind them how you need to begin each sentence with a capital letter and finish with a full stop. Also, draw attention to the fact that you are leaving a finger space between each word.
5
Read back over what you have written with your child. Ask them if they would like to add something to this. Your child can then begin writing and can use what you have written to help them. They can write some more if they wish. Encourage them to sound out what they would like to write and to match the sounds to the letters as best they can. Praise them for their efforts. They can draw a picture to accompany their writing.
Maths – Money – This week we will continue the topic of money. Continue to allow your child time
to explore the coins that you have at home. Ask your child to put a 2c coin next to a 1c coin, what
does this make? Practise combining different coins to make different amounts. Do not worry if this is
difficult for your child. This is a concept that can take time and lots of practice.
