Welcome to the Junior School
2016 - 2017
Dear Parents and Students,
This handbook contains important and useful information for you regarding a wide array of topics related to school life. I ask you to
review the contents of this document for a clear understanding of the expectations we hold, and the reasons behind them. If you, or
your child, have any questions about any of the content, I encourage you to ask, so we can discuss and reflect together.
In order for our school to reach its goal of providing a caring learning environment, standards and norms of behavior need to be
clearly defined and respected by the whole community. In addition to the important work of learning that goes on inside the
classrooms, students are faced with situations outside the classroom that allow them to develop as responsible and respectful people
every day. It is our intention that the Parent/Student Handbook, which covers a wide range of areas to do with school life, will be
used to foster the positive learning that we place at the heart of our community.
Each school year brings new developments and changes, but supporting student development is always at the heart of what we do
every day.
Together with all of the faculty and staff of ISF, I would like to welcome your family to the 2016-2017 Academic Year and look
forward to exciting growth!
Kind regards,
Debra Williams
Head of School
Cari genitori e studenti,
Oltre all’importante lavoro di apprendimento
svolto all’interno delle classi, gli studenti si troveranno giorno dopo giorno a vivere situazioni di natura estranea a quella didattica, in cui avranno modo di
crescere come persone responsabili e rispettose.
Cordiali saluti,
Debra Williams

After School Activities
Our school offers a range of after school activities for students. A letter describing the activities is sent home in the
first few weeks of school. Once student interest is determined, activities for the semester are established. The activities
change depending on teacher/student interest and may include boys/girls soccer, basketball, tennis, swimming, art
club, drama, cooking, music club, green club or other activities of special interest to children.
After School Procedures
The Junior School day officially ends at 3:30 p.m. unless there is a specific supervised after school activity.
In the interest of the children’s safety, we ask that you leave the courtyard (cortile) as soon as you have picked up
your child(ren). The Lower Field is the designated play area for students after school. It is open to the school
community until 4.30 p.m. Parents must be present and actively supervising their children in this area at all times .
Recess rules also apply after school and parents are asked to reinforce them. Please be extra vigilant when
manoeuvring vehicles in the Upper Field as children may be present.
If your child is going home with another parent on a particular day, a note must be given to the class teacher on the
morning of that day. The name of the person picking up the child should be included in the note. It is the parent’s
responsibility to inform bus drivers when a child is not taking the bus on a given day.
Arrival and Dismissal
School Hours
Preschool - Grade 5: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p. m. (Tuesdays to 2:45 p.m.)
Students are expected to be in their classroom on time each day. We ask that you speak to your children about the
importance of regular attendance and punctuality at school, and ensure that they arrive on time. Instruction at the
Junior School begins promptly at 8:30 a.m.
Arrival
To ease congestion and to support optimal traffic flow, parents should approach the school, between 8:15 and 8:25,
from Ponte a Ema and turn right into the school’s entrance. Turn right into the parking lot and follow the line of
traffic along the coned off ‘safe area’ where children may be dropped safely. Children enter the school through the
Aula Magna entrance where a teacher or administrator will be waiting to meet and greet them. Parents then continue
out of the parking lot and turn right when exiting onto Via del Carota. Parents are kindly requested not to drop off
your child any earlier than 8:10. Specific student entry guidelines and map will be provided in the August e-
mailing to parents.
The normal drop-off procedures begin the second day of school. Parents may park in the parking lot and accompany
their child(ren) on the first day of school only, to confirm your child’s new teacher/class location (posted in the
cortile) and to meet the teachers

Dismissal
Bus students report directly to the Aula Magna door where they are met by their bus driver. There is also a member
of staff on bus duty to ensure the safe dismissal of these children. Preschool bus children are escorted to the bus by a
class teacher. If for any reason a child is not going home by bus, the school must be informed well in advance.
Teachers in Foundation Kindergarten to Grade 5 bring their classes to the courtyard at the dismissal time of 3.30 p.m.
(Tuesdays at 2:45 p.m.) and the children remain with their class teacher until a parent or guardian has arrived to
collect them. Upon dismissal, children should say goodbye to their teachers to let them know they are leaving. If a
child is going home with a friend, he or she must bring a note from the parent who gives permission. This note
should be given to the child’s class teacher at the beginning of the school day.
We ask for your full cooperation with these procedures at dismissal to ensure your children are collected safely
from school on time at 3:30 each day.
Assemblies
Assemblies are held in the Aula Magna on a regular basis, usually on Tuesday at 1400. They provide opportunities for
student learning and achievements to be shared and celebrated, issues of whole school interest to be discussed and
guest presenters to be enjoyed. Parents will be formally invited to assemblies when there is a special presentation.
Attendance and Punctuality Policy
Introduction
The International School of Florence seeks to ensure that all of its students receive a full education, which maximizes
the opportunities for inclusion and achievement at school so that each student is able to realize his/her full potential.
Students who are regularly away from school, or who are persistently late, will not achieve expected progress. There
is an expectation that all students are present every day the school is in session.
A student’s attendance is essential to learning that includes not only specific subject matter, but also attendance
habits, work habits, attitudes and underlying concepts. While summative assessments such as research and other
final projects and tests count as part of the success criteria for students advancing to the next grade, it does not replace
many of the formative assessment and in-class learning. Every student contributes to every other student’s learning.
Poor attendance interrupts the process of education. It also impedes the continuity of the lessons presented, the ability
of the students to understand and gain insight from the classroom experiences and the student’s ability to establish
proper work habits. Students need to come to school every day and benefit from interaction, discussion and teacher
support available during class time.
Each student’s daily attendance data is transferred to his/her permanent records. Attendance is also recorded on all
students’ transcripts and reports.
Aims of the Policy
• To maximize the overall attendance of ISF students
• To define the roles and responsibilities involved in maintaining student attendance and punctuality.
• To clarify school expectations and consequences for attendance and punctuality.
International School of Florence
Parent/Student Handbook
Junior School
2016-2017
4
To be successful in this endeavor, it is imperative that all members of the school community are aware of this policy,
its purposes, procedures, expectations and consequences. Students, parents and guardians, teachers, school
administration and board members all have a role in maintaining a high standard of attendance and punctuality.
Absences
It is important that students attend school on a regular basis. Parents/guardians are strongly discouraged from
taking their children away during school time. Please call to inform the school if a student will be absent from school
for reasons including but not limited to:
• illness or injury
• medical appointments
• religious observance
If a parent/guardian feels it is absolutely unavoidable to take their child out of school for an extended period, a
letter should be submitted, in advance, to the Junior School Principal.
A student who is unable to attend school will not be able to participate in extracurricular activities later in the same
day. Students who have been absent for a full day or more, and have had their parent/guardian notify the school, may
go directly to class. If the parent/guardian has not notified the school, the student must have a note signed by the
parent/guardian and check in at the reception prior to going to class.
Medical Absences
In the event that a student's absence from school is due to an illness or injury, he/she is required to submit an
authentic doctor's certificate within five school days from the last day of the absence . This certificate needs to
include specific dates and the duration of time for any recommended treatment. Certificates will not be accepted
beyond five days from the date of absence. Your child will not be able to return to school without a medical
certificate.
Punctuality
• School starts at 8.30 am. It is expected that all students arrive in good time (8.15-8.25 am). Students, who
continually arrive late, seriously disrupt continuity and progress within the class.
• Classroom teachers take an attendance roll at 8:30 am. If students arrive after 8:30 am, they are to report to the
school reception office and sign in.
Monitoring Attendance and Responding to Patterns of Absence
The school will respond when a pattern of low attendance emerges.
If a class teacher makes initial contact with a parent/guardian and there is no improvement, the Principal will be
informed. When a student's attendance falls below 80% in one semester, a parent/guardian will be contacted as the
student may seriously jeopardize grade level advancement at that point.

Make-up Work
Attendance and participation is an important part of a student’s work and assessment is essential. Students are
responsible for making up all school work from any absence. The general expectation is that a student will receive an
equal number of days to make up work as he/she was absent from school. Example – if a student is out one day, they
have one day to make up the work when returning to school.
Parent Information Sessions
Orientation
An orientation for new students and their families will be held on Monday, 29 August, 2016 from 2:00-3:00pm. Please
meet in the Aula Magna.
As per previous correspondence, Preschool and Prekindergarten parents only are invited to meet their Teachers at
11:30am (in English) or 13:30 (Italian) on Friday 02 September.
Back to School Night
Parents are warmly invited to our school for Back to School Night scheduled for the first week of school. The main
goal of this evening is to meet your child’s teacher and to learn about the Junior School and its Program of Inquiry.
Parents will attend a general session to receive an overview of the program. Parents will then also have an
opportunity to attend a session with your child’s teacher to learn more about your child’s educational program in her
/ his class. Highlights of the curriculum, class schedule, procedures for homework, parent communication, materials,
special events of the year and other pertinent information will be shared. More information about Back to School
Night will be provided in the summer e-mailing to parents in August.
Birthdays
We are always pleased to recognize a child’s birthday at school. However, if a parent wishes to send in a cake, please
be sure to notify the teacher in advance as we need to check for possible food allergies amongst classmates. The cake
will be shared during their lunch period. For any birthday parties outside of school, teachers will not be able to
distribute birthday invitations unless the entire class has been invited.
Communication
We believe that it is essential to maintain close contact between home and school, and to welcome open
communication. Every effort is made to keep families informed about all aspects of life at the Junior School. Parents
are encouraged to phone or write when the need arises. Teachers are available by appointment, and you may
schedule appointments with them through the Receptionist ([email protected]).

From ISF to Parents:
The Principal’s weekly message will be emailed to parents and placed on the school’s website. There is also a monthly
newsletter, eISF. We kindly remind parents to visit our website (www.isfitaly.org) and Facebook page to stay current
with what is happening at school.
From Parents to ISF
Parents are encouraged to make appointments with teachers when necessary. If there are concerns that have not been
satisfactorily resolved with the teacher, an appointment can be made with the Junior School Principal through the
School Receptionist ([email protected]). It is important for parents to discuss concerns, of any nature, with your
child’s teacher first, prior to requesting a meeting with the Principal.
Change of Address
Parents should notify the School in writing immediately if there is a change of address, e-mail address, or telephone
number. This is particularly important in the event of an emergency.
Discipline/Bullying Policy
Everyone at ISF is committed to making our school a safe and caring place for all students. We recognize that learning
and teaching will thrive in a school climate that exhibits affirmative, positive and caring discipline through effective
and timely intervention. ISF has the clear expectation that students and staff will be respectful and supportive of each
other. We will treat each other with empathy and kindness, and we refuse to tolerate bullying of any kind at our
school.
Objectives of this Policy
All members of the ISF community, teaching and non-teaching staff, students and parents will have an
understanding of what bullying is.
All members of the ISF community, teaching and non-teaching staff will know what the school policy is on
bullying, and follow it when bullying is reported.
All students and parents will know what to do if bullying arises.
As a school, we take bullying seriously. Students and parents can be assured that they will be supported
when bullying is reported.
Bullying will not be tolerated.
What Is Bullying?
Bullying is when a person is exposed repeatedly, or over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more people
with intent to harm and there is a power imbalance. It is a form of harassment and results in pain and distress to the
victim. Bullying behaviors normally fall into three categories: physical, emotional and verbal.
Examples of bullying behaviors
Hurting someone physically (e.g. kicking, hitting, pushing, pinching, throwing things)
Threats

Stealing
Encouraging others to leave someone out of a group on purpose

Starting and spreading rumors
Cyber-bullying
Preventative Measures
1. Student Instruction/Awareness
Bullying behaviors are unacceptable. Ongoing classroom discussions, role-playing and assemblies will address the
issue and prevention of bullying.
2. Staff Awareness/Action
School personnel shall follow the ISF Staff Bullying Prevention Guidelines to ensure a consistent approach is adopted
on a school-wide basis.
3. Student/Parent Action
ISF encourages students and parents who become aware of an act of bullying to report the incident(s) immediately to
a school administrator for further investigation. Any student who retaliates against another for reporting bullying
will also be subject to consequences.
ISF Staff Bullying Prevention Guidelines
Watch and listen carefully for bullying, especially at recess. Stop bullying when you see it.
Spread out at recess and stay on watch. Teachers should move around so that they can see all areas of the
playground.
Have class discussions about how to treat others with respect.
Make sure your students know the school’s bullying policy.
Pay attention when students say that they are being bullied.
Respond quickly and sensitively to bullying reports.
Natural consequences go hand in hand with teaching acceptable behavior and working to assist the child who is
being bullied to replace negative behaviors with positive. The school’s first response always is to teach. However,
reports of bullying are taken seriously and shall be dealt with quickly and effectively. If a student is found guilty of
bullying behavior, the consequences shall depend on both the results of the investigation and the severity of the
incident. Retaliation, after someone has reported a bullying incident, will be immediately referred to the Principal.
Recess
Children are to remain outdoors throughout the recess period; only the teachers on duty may give permission
to go indoors.
Trees may not be climbed; all plants, shrubs, and trees are to be taken care of and not harmed. The
environment is to be respected at all times.
Ball playing is not permitted in the Lower Field or Courtyard.
Swings are for the use of one person at a time, and no one should push another student on a swing. Children
must never stand on or jump from a swing.
International School of Florence

Children may not climb on top of the climbing frames.
It is important that the same rules are observed when children are in your care. We count on your cooperation to
ensure the safety of our students.
Lunch
Lunchtime is meant to be a time when children can eat and talk with their classmates in a relaxed atmosphere.
Children must walk to the lunchroom quietly.
Children should speak only in an ‘indoor voice’.
Polite table manners should be used.
Children are expected to remain seated during lunch.
If a child needs to speak to the teacher on duty, he or she must raise his or her hand.
Children must tidy their place before being excused from the lunch room.
Each child must have a container (lunch box) for his or her lunch if bringing lunch from home
School Uniforms
The ISF uniform must be purchased at the following store:
10 E Lode
Via Uguccione della Faggiola nr 13.
Tel: 055 3831823
Opening times: 9:00 – 13:00; 15:00 - 19:00. Saturdays 9.00 – 13:00.
On Physical Education days, appropriate clothing must be worn. Students are required to wear shorts or school-logo
sweatpants, and blue or white t-shirts and/or sweatshirts with the school logo. Preschool children should wear
comfortable clothing. Students are required to wear the school uniform every day. Hats and sun cream are strongly
recommended for outdoor play during periods of hot weather.
Emergency Evacuation and Lockdown Drills
The signal for building evacuation is a loud siren. Students will leave the building with their teachers via the most
direct route to the Upper Field. Silence is expected so that instructions may be heard. All staff are aware of the
procedures, and there are periodic drills both announced and unannounced. A lockdown procedure is also in place.
Both evacuation and lockdown procedures will form part of the regular safety routines of the school.

9
Lockdown Procedure
At the first indication of a potential major incident of danger / violence or any evidence that a clearly suspicious
individual has arrived on campus, students or guests should notify the school guard or any staff member
immediately.
Roles and Responsibilities
Clearly defined roles, responsibilities and expectations are critical in emergency situations.
The Head of School/Principal are/is responsible for overall planning, the final content of the plan, scheduling of
drills, inviting police/Vigili Giurati and or the School’s Safety Consultant to participate in and be aware of planning
and drills, training of students and for the overall safety of staff members and students. In an actual incident (not a
drill), the police are responsible for management of the threat and subsequent criminal Investigation, however the
Head of School/Principal shall provide full cooperation with police.
Staff members have the overall responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of students.
Students have a responsibility to be familiar with the plan and to respond quickly to the direction of staff members
during a crisis situation. The lockdown plan will be reviewed with students at the start of each school year, and pre-
announced drills will take place during the year.
Any student with information or prior knowledge of an individual or a potential situation which may result in a
violent incident must report to the closest adult in the building with that information as soon as possible. This is also
the case during an incident. In the event that a student has left an assigned classroom temporarily, at the outset of an
announced lockdown, he/she should report immediately to a pre-identified room on each floor.
Parents/visitors will be informed of an actual incident involving a lockdown. During an actual lockdown , parents
must not enter the campus but should await further instructions from the Head of School/Principal via email.
Meeting Point
In an actual emergency situation, parents should report to the closest staging area – Oratorio di Santa Caterina
and await instructions from the Head of School/ Principal via email.
In all incidents of an actual lockdown, a communication to parents will be emailed to parents as soon as
practically possible.
Parents should be encouraged to ensure contact information is kept up to date so they can easily be reached by
staff in the event of an emergency.
Field Trips
Our school takes full advantage of its unique location in Tuscany and close proximity to Florence. Teachers plan
regular excursions for their students to galleries, museums, and other local places of interest. These trips enhance the
curriculum and extend student learning. Teachers will inform parents in writing about upcoming field trips. Parents
are asked to complete a Field Trip Permission form at the beginning of the school year for all school trips within

school hours. Parents may be invited to accompany trips occasionally and if you can do so it will be greatly
appreciated.
First Aid and Medical Emergencies
There is no medical officer on campus. Students who become ill or injured in any way will be looked after by
qualified first aiders on staff. First aid supplies are available for the treatment of minor injuries. School staff will
administer simple first aid, and a parent or emergency contact will be called if further action is necessary. No student
will be sent home unless arrangements have been made with a family member. School staff will not administer
medication of any kind.
In the event that immediate medical treatment is required, students will be taken to the emergency room at the
Ospedale di Ponte a Niccheri in Antella (comune di Bagno a Ripoli).
It is very important that parents update and return to the Reception the Emergency Contact/Medical Information
form.
Food Allergies
Some students may suffer from food allergies which can cause serious reactions and in some cases be life-threatening.
If a student has a food allergy, parents must inform the school so that teachers and classmates can be informed
and appropriate measures taken. Children are not permitted to share their snack or lunch to minimize the risk of
allergic reactions. We encourage children to be both informed and responsible about the issue of food allergies.
Head Lice
As head lice remains a problem in schools, we insist that parents support our efforts to halt the spread of lice should
they appear at the school. A child with head lice must be kept at home following treatment and until parents can give
an assurance that there is absolutely no evidence of lice or nits (eggs).
Homework Policy
Homework is defined as written or non-written tasks that are assigned by teachers to be completed by students
outside the classroom. It is used as a tool to reinforce what is learned in class and prepares students for upcoming
lessons. Regular homework provides students with the opportunity to take responsibility for their learning and helps
them to develop self-motivation, as well as learning skills. At the Junior School, homework assignments are designed
to meet the needs and the abilities of individual students.
Students should read at home every night for a period of time suited to their age and stage of reading development. It
is important that children read in English as well as their home language. Children want to read if they see it as an
enjoyable activity and they see that those around them value reading. We encourage parents to read to your children
and with your children as well as encouraging them to read to you. Sharing an enthusiasm for literature and reading
with your children will significantly help them to become successful readers. Leisure reading may consist of free
choice books or an assigned selection.

The following table gives a general guideline for the approximate amount of ‘focused’ time your child should spend
on homework each night. We aim to achieve a balance between the different subject areas and plan assignments so
that students will not be overloaded or under loaded. Your child’s teacher will share his or her homework routine
with you in more detail at the Back to School Night. However, do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you
have any questions or concerns regarding homework.
You can support your child by providing an appropriate setting and structured routine for doing homework.
Assignments may be prepared only for students who are absent due to illness; teachers will be unable to provide
homework assignments in advance for children who have taken extended holidays. Students are expected to
complete work and/or homework that have been missed. In the event of extenuating circumstances, please inform
your child’s teacher in writing.
Lost and Found
The Lost and Found is located in the cupboard outside of the Aula Magna. Any items which are found should be
placed there. Parents are requested to look through the Lost and Found when they notice an item of clothing is
missing. Items left unclaimed for more than one month are donated to a charitable organization. Please ensure that all
of your child’s clothing is labelled. The school assumes no responsibility for the loss or theft of students’ personal
effects.
Lunch and Snack
Children are encouraged to bring a healthy snack such as fruit, yoghurt, cheese, juice (no potato chips, sweets) and a
healthy lunch. Students may bring their own lunch or subscribe to the hot lunch program. Information on the lunch
program can be obtained from Ms. Elena Rossi in the Junior School Business Office ([email protected]).
Preschool and Prekindergarten children eat lunch in their own lunchroom.
Messages and Telephone Calls
The office telephones are not available for students except in an emergency. We can usually pass on urgent messages
to staff or students. Messages for teachers will be placed in their mailboxes. Messages for students will be given to the
teacher to pass on. Please ensure that special arrangements such as early dismissals and play dates are scheduled in

Parent Association (PA)
The purpose of the Parent Association is to enrich our school community through social events and volunteer efforts.
All ISF parents are welcome to become members of the Parent Association and are encouraged to participate with
enthusiasm in PA meetings and activities. Please know that your time and efforts are greatly appreciated by our
students, faculty and staff. In the past, we have all enjoyed the many fun events organized by parents at our school.
Through these wonderful social events, supported by our parents, our community recognizes the importance of
celebrating internationalism which makes ISF such a unique school.
Every year, we look for Parent Class Representatives for each grade level. These parents are a vital part of
streamlining the dissemination of communication about upcoming events and possible need for volunteers. Some of
the responsibilities of a Class Representative are:
• Organizing volunteers for class events
• Communicating with parents in their respective class
• Coordinating the collection of funds for events
• Attending monthly PA meetings to represent your class
• Encouraging participation in community activities
• Organizing teacher gifts
ISF promotes parent involvement in school life and we look forward to seeing many of you helping out during the
upcoming 2015 - 2016 academic year. Thank you again for contributing so much to our community and continuing to
support ISF.
Recess
Preschool and Prekindergarten children have a thirty minute recess every morning and a thirty-minute recess after
lunch on the new Early Childhood Playground, put in place by virtue of the generosity of parents and the Parents
Association during the 2014 – 2015 academic year. Children in Foundation Kindergarten – Grade 5 have a 15 minute
morning recess and a lunch recess in the Lower and Upper Fields. In wet weather, children have recess in their
classrooms. The children are fully supervised by teachers on duty during all recess times.
Reporting to Parents on Student Progress
All students receive comprehensive written reports in January and June. There are two annual Parent-Teacher
Conferences, in October and February, as noted on the school calendar and a Student-Led Portfolio Conference in
May. Parents also receive a short written report on the completion of each Unit of Inquiry (six times per year; four
times in PS and PK).

Safety and Security
The safety or our students is of utmost concern. Parents can be assured that evacuation and lockdown procedures are
in place in case of fire or other security alert. Fire escape routes are posted outside of every classroom. A
comprehensive video surveillance security system is in place.
The gates to the School are opened at 8:00 a.m. A security guard is on duty from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The security
guard escorts all visitors to the Receptionist where they are asked to Sign In and Sign Out. This is very important in
the event of an emergency.
School Closure
There is an emergency school closure phone chain in place, and in the event of a school closure, you will be notified
by telephone.
School Supplies
The school will provide most of the supplies needed by students; however, teachers may provide their students with
a list of any other additional specific school supplies that may be needed. Please contact your child’s teacher if you
have any questions.
Sports Council
All students, in Grades 1 through 5, are given the opportunity to become members of the Sports Council at the Junior
School. Two members are elected per grade in the beginning of the school year. The Sports Council provides children
with an excellent opportunity to develop leadership skills and to make a positive difference in the life of the School.

sponsored events, chaperoning on field trips and specific activities arranged with teachers. If you are interested in
volunteering at the school, please leave your name, contact number and area of interest with the Principal.
Student iPad Acceptable Use Policy and Guidelines
Technology resources at ISF are provided for the purpose of supporting the educational vision of the School.
Use of these technologies is a privilege that carries responsibility and behavioral expectations consistent with all
school rules and policies, including but not limited to those stated in the ISF Upper and Junior School Student/Parent
Handbooks.
It is understood that members of the ISF community will use all types of computing devices and the School’s network
in a responsible, ethical, and legal manner at all times.
The Student iPad Acceptable Use Policy and Guidelines document sets out the expectations of The International
School of Florence regarding responsible use of iPads.
Students and parents are required to review this document at the start of the school year, as well as sign the
accompanying agreement, to acknowledge receipt and assume responsibility for the protection of hardware and
software of the iPad.
Students in Grade 5 will be issued an iPad with predetermined applications (Apps) installed.
The International School of Florence retains sole right of possession of the iPad and related equipment. The iPad will
be issued to students according to the guidelines set forth in this document. ISF retains the right to collect and/or
inspect the iPad at any time, and to alter, add, or delete installed software or hardware.
ICT Access and Use Policy
Students at ISF have access to a wide variety of technology. It is expected that they use this technology only for
educational purposes. Students are provided with their own account on the school network from grade 1.
The goal in providing this service is to promote educational excellence in the school by facilitating resource sharing,
innovation and communication. With access to computer devices and people all over the world also comes the
availability of materials that may not be considered of educational value and it is for this reason that strict guidelines
must be adhered to when using the school’s computers and network. The valuable information and interaction
available on the worldwide network far outweighs the possibility that users may obtain material that is not consistent
with the school’s educational goals.
Use of the Internet and the school’s devices is a privilege not a right and abuse of the privilege will lead to its
cancellation. The Head of School will deem what is appropriate use and her decision is final. The administration,
faculty and staff may request that a user’s access be denied or suspended in the event of improper use.

Assessment
The International School of Florence views assessment as a necessary strategy to nurture each student to learn and
grow to their fullest potential. Assessment is the gathering and analysis of information about student understandings
and performance. It identifies what students know, understand, can do and feel at different stages in the learning
process. To be truly effective, everyone involved with an assessment must have a clear understanding of the reasons
for the assessment, what is being assessed and the criteria for success.
Purposes of Assessment
As outlined in the IB-PYP Assessment Handbook, we believe the purposes of student assessment are to promote
student learning, to provide information about student learning, to inform planning and instruction and to contribute
to the overall effectiveness of our program.
Student learning is promoted through:
assessing the children’s prior knowledge and understandings brought to the topic or task
planning the teaching and learning in order to support each student in taking their next step, or refining their
prior knowledge or understandings
building a profile of children’s understanding, knowledge and skills
engaging children in reflection on their learning and in the assessment of their work and the work of others
Information about student learning is provided by:
teacher anecdotal records of their observations
examples of student work or performance
statistics based on explicit benchmarks and/or rubrics
test results (1st-5th grade)

Process of Assessment
Assessment consists of three main areas:
Pre-Assessment helps teachers and children to determine what students already know in order to plan the
next stage of teaching and learning.
Formative Assessment is ongoing assessment based on how well children fulfill learning goals. These
assessments provide feedback to the teacher and the children to enhance their learning.
Summative Assessment takes place at the end of a period of teaching and learning. It provides the children
with meaningful opportunities to demonstrate what has been learned.
Supporting Your Child’s Learning
You can support your child’s learning by:
• Maintaining regular contact with the school
• Sharing literature with your child
• Supporting your child’s mother tongue
• Supporting your child’s acquisition or expansion of English and/or Italian
• Encouraging your child’s curiosity and supporting your child’s inquiry both in and out of school
• Attending parent education evenings, curriculum information sessions, and parent/teacher conferences
• Providing an appropriate setting and structured routine for doing homework
Student Portfolio Guidelines
“A portfolio is a vehicle for engaging students in the process of self-evaluation and goal setting”
What is a portfolio?
A portfolio is a collection of a student’s work that shows development over a period of time. It is a collection of work
that tells a story of what the child is learning and how that learning is taking place. The contents of a portfolio focus
on a student’s achievement and it contains samples selected by the student as well as the teacher. The collection
comes from classroom activities including activities from the ‘specials’ curriculum areas. It is selected over time to
demonstrate the child’s growth in learning.
Purpose of Portfolio
At the Junior School, we believe that the purpose of the Student Portfolio is to:
Celebrate and give evidence of achievement
Encourage reflection on the learning process and achievements
Encourage students and parents to see learning as a continuous process
Encourage a sense of pride in one’s work, thus building self-esteem
Encourage emphasis on process as well as product
Allow students to retain ownership of their work and to become active participants in their own learning
Set and review learning goals
Examine growth over time

What are Student-Led Conferences?
Student Portfolio Day is considered an essential part of the Junior School’s reporting system to parents and is
scheduled in the latter part of the second semester. Portfolio Day is school wide, Pre-school through fifth grade,
showing a child’s growth and development in all subject areas. The teachers coordinate the day’s timetable to include
all families, arranging simultaneous student-led conferences in their rooms as required. The portfolio is available for
the parents to take home at the end of the school year.
The desired outcomes of Student Led Conference for the students is that each child:
Has had regular discussions throughout the school year with their teachers about his or her learning progress
Has received help to set and review personal learning goals
Is encouraged to reflect on his or her own learning
Has had the opportunity to celebrate achievements and share his or her learning progress with parents
The Student Led Conference Day provides parents with the opportunity to celebrate their child’s achievements and to
support their learning goals. Parents are encouraged to:
Become more informed about their child’s learning
Attend the conference day and acknowledge, encourage and support your child’s efforts
Be active in the school’s reporting process
Maintain a record of your child’s learning progress for the year
PYP Exhibition
In Grade 5, students take part in an Exhibition. The Exhibition focuses on a local or global issue that has sufficient
scope and sequence to warrant an extended investigation.
The Exhibition has a number of key purposes:
• For students to engage in an in-depth, collaborative inquiry
• To provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning
• To provide students with an opportunity to explore multiple perspectives
• For students to synthesize to apply their learning of previous years and to reflect upon their learning
• To provide an authentic process for assessing student understanding
• To demonstrate how students can take action as a result of their learning
• To unite the students, teachers, parents and other members of the school community in a collaborative experience
that incorporates the essential elements of the PYP
• To celebrate the transition of learners from primary to middle school education
