I made my first photographs at age 8 with a Brownie Hawkeye, mostly during field trips with
my geologist father in the American Midwest. On my 12th birthday, I purchased my first
serious camera, the Yashica D for $19, in Dover, NH with money earned from a summer job
picking strawberries.
The work presented here from early days living in Venice, was done on pawnshop cameras
by means of downloading film (far too often outdated) into my own cassettes and developing
when darkroom opportunities presented themselves. Most of my skimpy budget went to film,
and as the years went on I ended up freezing 100’s of rolls waiting for the darkroom. Many of
these images rested for close to two decades in last-legs refrigerator freezer units in various
rented domiciles around Los Angeles, before the latent images met developer. When they
finally did, the best of them seemed to awaken back to life after a long sleep.

I remain to this day, essentially what used to be called a street photographer, ie a docu-
mentarian of the every day, hoping to reveal the fleeting small miracles of poetry in the
commonplace we tend to overlook.
