NASA lists• Discovery – by ancient Babylonians.• called it “Marduk”.
• Greek and Romans -> Zeus• 1610 – Galileo turned his telescope on it.

way to go to heaven, not the way the

Discovery of Jupiter
[2][3]
Chemical Composition
• composition of atmosphere is similar to that of the sun—mostly hydrogen and helium. • Deep in the pressure and temperature increase it compresses hydrogen gas into a liquid.
• Jupiter is a gas planet- there is no solid surface.• if one stepped onto the planet, he would sink into it and eventually get crushed by the massive increase in pressure

Distance from the SunMinimum Distance from Sun: 741 million km (483,682,810 miles)
Maximum Distance from Sun: 817 million km (508 million miles)

Length of Year
Length of Day
11.86 Earth years to orbit

9.8 Earth hours to revolve around its axis (day).

Mass of moons
Moons Galileo discovered its 4 largest moons. Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. They are known as Galilean satellites.
Io - the most volcanically active body in our solar system.
Ganymede - the largest planetary moon and the only moon in the solar system known to have its own magnetic field.
Europa - liquid ocean may lie beneath its frozen crust.
has about 99% the diameter of the planet Mercury but only about a third of its mass.
64 confirmed Moons

Rings of Jupiter
first observed in 1979 by the Voyager 1 space probe. consists mainly of dust. hard to see unlike Saturn’s rings. thickness of the ring ~ to be 30 km or less
four main components• a thick inner torus of particles - halo ring• exceptionally thin -main ring• two wide and thick outer - gossamer rings

The Great Red Spot
storm that’s larger than Earth. its swirling winds blow 100km/hr similar to a hurricane. hurricanes on earth weaken quickly. Jupiter -> there is no land to weaken the storm.
1st observed in mid-1600’s lasted 181 years and possibly longer than 346 years. visible through Earth-based telescopes.

Interesting Facts about JupiterJupiter has 2.5 times the mass of all the other planets in the Solar System combined.
Jupiter got any more massive, it would actually get smaller and dense.
Astronomers call Jupiter a failed star. Not really appropriate, it’s like saying your house is a failed skyscraper.
Stars generate their energy through the fusion of mass together.
Jupiter would need more than 70 times its current mass to ignite nuclear fusion.
After crashing dozens of Jupiters together, you might have a chance to
make a new star.
