EMV Chip Cards
Dort Federal Credit Union is hard at work on an EMV chip card solution for our members. With an embedded microchip to securely store and protect cardholder
data, this new card technology is set to become the global standard for credit and debit card payment. In point of sale purchases, this technology provides an additional layer of cardholder protection, plus the same zero liability for fraudulent purchases our Dort Federal Credit Union cardholders have today.
By the end of 2016, we expect to be able to create EMV credit cards at all Dort Federal Credit Union locations. During our conversion process, if you are planning on traveling out of the country, Dort Federal Credit Union can exchange your Dort Visa Credit Card for an EMV card. Simply give us a call, and we will get your new card underway. Dort Federal Visa Platinum cardholders will receive further information regarding their card conversion in the coming months. Once we have our credit cards converted, we will begin the process of rolling out EMV technology for our debit cards.
It is important to remember during this process, your existing magnetic stripe credit and debit cards will continue to work at all retail locations. Current surveys show less than a third of all U.S. merchants have the technology in place to accept an EMV card for payment. Whether using a magnetic stripe card or an EMV chipped card, all Dort Federal Credit Union cardholders benefit from zero liability for fraudulent purchases. Shred Days are Coming!
Fall is a great time to clean out your files and prepare for another year of pay stubs, receipts, and other important documents. The key is to know what you should keep
and what to throw away or shred. It’s a good idea to store any documents that you need to keep permanently in a fireproof storage box or a safe deposit box at Dort Federal.
While purging your personal documents is a good practice, be mindful of how you’re destroying documents that contain your personal identification. Shredding the documents is the best way to ensure that your identity is protected.

CREDIT CARD RECEIpTS AnD STATEMEnTS Keep receipts until your monthly statement arrives; if that's correct, toss the receipts. Keep a receipt if you're disputing the bill or to cover the length of a warranty or return period. Hold on to the statements for seven years if they contain tax-related expenses.
pAy CHECK STUbS Make sure the information on your paycheck stubs matches your annual W-2 when you receive it, then throw away the stubs. If your employer lists vacation/sick leave carryover on your paycheck stub, keep the last one of the year. Notify your employer if the information doesn’t match.
RETIREMEnT/SAVIngS pLAn STATEMEnTS Keep quarterly statements until you receive your annual summary; if everything is correct on the annual summary, toss the quarterlies. It’s best to hold on to annual statements until you retire or close the account.
CREDIT UnIOn RECORDS At the end of each year, go through your share draft carbons or statements and only keep those related to taxes, business expenses, and housing or mortgage payments.
bILLS Keep bills for major purchases – cars, jewelry, furniture, computers, and so on – to show proof of their value in the event of loss or damage. For other bills, once you know payment has cleared your credit union for a particular bill and the return/refund period has expired, toss that bill.
HOUSE RECORDS Keep purchase price information and the cost of permanent improvements to your property, such as remodeling. Also, if you buy or sell property, keep records of legal fees and your real estate agent’s commission for six years after you sell your house. Keeping these records, especially home improvement records, is important and could help lower your capital gains tax should you decide to sell.
TAx RECORDS The IRS has three years to audit your return, and you have three years to file an amended return to claim a refund if you made a mistake. If you made the mistake of underreporting your gross income by 25% or more on a return, the IRS has six years to challenge it. If you filed a fraudulent return or didn’t file one at all, the IRS can catch you on it at any time.
