hello,I’m Justin Jones, a third year architecture student at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. I love to design, make, travel and learn. I hope you enjoy the following collection of my work as I have put enormous effort into producing it for many reasons, most of all, my own satisfaction.

I hope to hear from you soon.

During our 2B term our entire class comes together to produce a play. I worked mainly building props and headed the design and building of “the podium”. A centre piece in the play, it took part in almost every scene.

Each box was 3’ x 2’ x 1 1/2’ and consisted of 3 sides completely white and 3 sides made of charred rough cut pine, coated with epoxy cut and arranged alchemical symbols consistent with the themes of the play.

s e t & p r o p s p o d i u mThe boxes were made to stack as well as create both a completely clean white exterior and a completely charred exterior when arranged correctly.

Inside each box we placed LEDs with translucent red plastic coverings so that during many dark scenes of the play the symbols would glow and be visible as well as eluding to the fiery method of making.

The play took place inside the UWSA School of Architecture and needed a structure to support and frame the actual ‘stage’ space.

The super structure held many other pieces of the set including curtains, lighting, projection, sound and recording equipment. It had to be extremely durable, versatile and most of all beautiful.

First five separate frames were built out of 2x4’s and 2x6’s and hung from the beams independently, lined up and joined.

The whole apparatus was very strong and even held people with ease. It served its purpose of defining the stage and allowing for great opportunities to play with light, sound and transparent fabric creating the incredible visuals seen above.

The main geometry of the building services a green pathway spanning across an urban promenade and courtyard. The building responds to existing paths of movement through the site and modi-fies them. The programming includes a daycare with a courtyard, community use rooms, pool, fitness centre and production studios.

u r b a n p r o m e n a d eOpening to the urban pathway and court-yard at grade is a long art gallery and cafe respectively. The gallery is also used as circulation alongside the studios and black-box theatre. The program is covered by a green roof accessed by ramps on either the east or west sides or by the main lobby. This path includes a variety of spaces including a community garden, open grassy areas and paths covered by a more dense canopy.

Grapes have been grown as a monoculture for a very long time. This causes the vines to be extremely susceptible to various diseases based on their genetics which were researched and diagrammed. The landscape was then divided based on the production of wine in batches. Eachsegment of land was made to have different qualities in its slope, direction, proximity to water and air circulation, affecting the taste of the wine in each portion.

g e n o m e w i n e r yBy taking the excavated Milton Quarry and using the excavated material from nearby sites as they are being harvested an artificial topography is built on a massive scale to create relatively controlled terriors.Existing cultivars will be grown for produc-tion but be allowed to propagate sexually creating new cultivars each time. Eventually each terrior will form a characteristic taste based on which cultivars flourish in each portion.

Create medium-high density apartment buildings built on conventional-size city lots, developed without land assemblies in areas that would profit from greater den-sity, in the periphery of downtown Toronto.

m o d e r n l o f t sAppartment units were stacked and stag-gered in an additive manner to allow oppor-tunities for balconies. Parking and bicycles storage was accomodated on the first level with a small business space (cafe) in the front. Views of Lake Ontario views were maximized as much as possible.

At Arquitectonica I had the opportunity to work on some very large scale projects with a few different teams. Due to their very diverse set of projects as well as being lucky enough to work at their head office I was able work on a variety of different projects.

a r q u i t e c t o n i c a I spent a lot of time in particular working on Brickell City Centre, a mixed-use complex covering 4 blocks in downtown Miami. My responsibilities included working drawings, renderings and presentation boards.

Hicks Partners does primarily high end residential work, particularly cottages in the Muskoka Lakes area. They also do some commercial scale work and have a growing interior design team

During my time at Hicks Partnerts I had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects from high end residential and cot-tages to commercial buildings and interior renovations.

h i c k s p a r t n e r s w o r kI worked with Google Sketchup producing and rendering 3D models, AutoCAD pro-ducing working drawings and Adobe post processing much of the work produced in Sketchup and AutCAD.

I also had the opportunity to work on a publication that Hicks Partners produces for potential clients.

Easy access storage area for small, frequently used items; pens, notebooks rulers

Storage area for larger, more permanent items;books, computer tower

Base extended to counter cantilevered top

I wanted to design and build a desk accomodating a wide ranging of shelving options and mainting a clear workspace without sacrificing convinience.

d e s kA two tiered top was used to provide open storage for laptops, rulers, pens and other small items. The lower shelving can be used for larger items. The shelves are open on both sides keeping the form of the desk very apparent and when occupied will create an interesting view of the items. The desk has the flexibility to be places against a wall or sit free and still serve as aninteresting center piece.

The Centre for Information Technology and Architecture (CITA) built this installa-tion with a workshop during the ACADIA conference in Cambridge. The concept of ‘The Rise’ was focused on a growing distributed structural system which can adapt and grow to suit different needs as opposed to a static traditional structure.

t h e r i s eThere are two distinct portions of this installation. There are modules, made out of lasercut acrylic and tensile rods of GFRP. The modules or ‘nodes’ serve as joining points for the tensile members grown in grasshopper.

During the workshop in which this installa-tion was produced I worked with prototyp-ing the ‘nodes’ and the build later on.

The f_ke cube was F_RM LAB’s instal-lation for the ACADIA (Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture) conference held in Cambridge. Using Ar-duino software kits and lasercut plexi, an interactive canopy was created to respond to the user.

f _ k e c u b eMotion sensors picked up the movement of the occupants and activated servo motors that would lift the canopy in response to the occupants position.

Personally I worked with programming the Arduino boards and building components.

November 2013 - Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture 2013 conference, installation by F_RMLAB on behalf of Waterloo School of Architecture

The CUBE is an undergraduate initiative exploring fabrication techniques and the eld of interactive architecture. Stemming from the groundwork of Field Guide,

exhibited at the Gladstone Hotel last April, The Cube brings a sense of discovery to an interactive canopy, encouraging the user to engage with the components in a playful and intimate setting.
