Perhaps it was a case of Fenway-induced jitters that had the Everett High football team
looking more vulnerable than its usual dominant self in the early going on Wednesday night.
Or maybe it was the damp, blusterous conditions passing through Fenway’s hallowed
grounds that momentarily threw the Tide for a loop.
Whatever the reason, Everett didn’t appear human for long, gaining separation from rival
Masconomet midway through the second quarter en route to a 36-20 victory as part of the
Fenway Gridiron Series on Thanksgiving Eve.
Seemingly featuring a different hero each game, Everett this time leaned on running back
Kevin Brown, the senior scoring three times and accumulating 101 yards on 11 carries.
Everett will face Xaverian in the Division 1 Super Bowl on December 2 at 8 p.m. at Gillette
Stadium.
“Coming to Fenway, it was a big experience,” said Brown. “Coaches [were] stressing [that]
this team is going to come out and they’re going to want to play so, under here in a big
environment [with] all the people coming out, playing at Fenway Park, you just have to play
your game and have fun.”
Unstoppable on its opening drive throughout the entirety of the playoffs, Everett (10-0)
marched down the field in just over two minutes, needing seven plays to open a 7-0
advantage as Brown powered his way up the middle from 4 yards out.
Undeterred, Masconomet (7-4) did what Tide opponents have been unable to so often in
2017: answer.
Operating from a series of spread formations, the Chieftains managed to get outside time
and time again, Everett linemen unable to keep containment on numerous occasions. Junior
running back Jay Theriault punctuated the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. Everett
blocked the PAT to preserve a 7-6 lead.

The door now pried open, Masconomet’s defense and special teams answered the bell,
forcing turnovers on back-to-back Everett possessions. Both times, the Tide defense bent,
but didn’t break.
Fail to take advantage of the rare Everett mistake, and coach John DiBiaso’s bunch will make
you pay.
Taking over after a Masconomet turnover on downs, Everett regained its footing, Brown
again finding the end zone and adding the two-point conversion for a nine-point Tide lead,
15-6.

After an ensuing Masconomet three-and-out, Everett’s special teams got involved in the fun,
with safety Lewis Cine blocking a Chieftain punt and linebacker Jordan Riggs returning it
the remaining 10-yards for a 22-6 halftime advantage.
Save for a rare first-half interception, Everett quarterback Jake Willcox was his usual
efficient self, completing 13-of-15 passes, including eight to junior slot receiver Anthony
Norcia for 76 yards.
The Chieftains briefly made things interesting following the break, Peter Kitsakos scurrying
53-yards on fourth-and-5 for a touchdown.
It hardly mattered. Everett responded in a matter of minutes as Brown rumbled 31-yards
down the sideline, churning his legs as if he was Mookie Betts attempting to stretch a double
into a triple.
“That was probably the best feeling in the world,” Brown said, of his dispatch of
Masconomet’s overmatched defenders. “Coach works on breaking tackles with us and

finishing the play, keep your feet moving. That’s exactly what I did. It felt great.”
Though DiBiaso was displeased by his team’s sloppiness early on, the fact that nobody got
injured in advance of next week’s Super Bowl was a blessing. As for the chance to coach at
one of the most storied ballparks in baseball history?
“I’m a Yankees fan,” DiBiaso slyly responded.
Hingham 7, Scituate 6 — Jack Johnson completed a 4-yard TD pass to Spencer Cassell to
give the Harbormen (8-3) a 7-0 lead with six minutes left in the Thanksgiving Eve nightcap
at Fenway Park between Patriot League rivals.
The Sailors (8-3) rallied for a score when Jack Ruble found Peyton Crosby with a 7-yard TD
pass with 1:45 remaining. Scituate, however, came up short when Ruble’s ensuing 2-point
conversion pass atttempt fell incomplete.
