Background and goals

• Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation - funded UAS research commercialization in Finland during years 2009 to 2011.

• During the program UAS sector filed over 1700 research commercialization ideas. • The paper introduces the Finnish UAS methods for research commercialization, its

theoretical base and practical aspects and experiences as well.

• The paper studies the process from activation to evaluation and business model development in selected cases.

• Comparisons to university sector in Finland will be made.• The practical part is based on Western Finland UAS consortium’s experiences on

research commercialization. The paper explores both quantitative and qualitative results.

Comparison between Universities and UAS

• Universities 1839 cases funded ->135 start-ups (7%)• UAS 875 cases funded, 52 start-ups (6%)• Universities were funded in three phases, UAS in two phases• Similar general results: awareness, culture, process, outcomes• Universities are one step ahead with international start-ups,

technology and knowledge, transfer office collaboration internationally

• Development of UAS sector was fast• Innovation process is combined with the learning process in UAS

In the UAS future emphasis will be in student entrepreneurship and integration of the innovation process with learning processes
