PAGE 1 K of C Knightly Knews Grand Knight’s Report Brother Knights, My hope is that all of you had a very Happy Easter with your families! In between our reflections and sacrifices during this past Lenten season, many of us were hard at work during the Fish Fry at St. George. Many Brother Knights came out to help and support the Fish Fry during those six weeks, and I would like to thank each and every one of you for help. Without our Brother Knights’ help, the Fish Fry would have been a very dicult task to accomplish. Special THANKS to all the wives that helped out and provided delicious deserts. As we continue to turn the corner into the final quarter of our current Columbian year, we want to definitely finish the year strong. We have a few events in the upcoming months. St. George is hosting a festival on the 23 rd and we were asked to assist with security detail. On May 29 th we have our Corporate Communion Mass at St George at 9:00 a.m. mass; breakfast will be at the Iron Skillet after mass. I hope to see you all there. Nominations and elections for Ocers are rapidly approaching. The nominations will take place during the May General Meeting, and the elections will take place during the June General Meeting. If you are interested in becoming an Ocer, or know of a Brother Knight who might be interested, please let any of the current Ocers know. Please pray over all the Ocer positions. I hope and look forward to seeing new Brother Knights step into an Ocer position. Lastly, please continue to pray for our Brother Knights who are ill or going through tough times and also let us not forget to pray for our Brothers who have passed away. As a reminder, let us not forget Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 8 th - let’s recognize all the special women in our lives who are mothers and show them that they are truly appreciated and a blessing for all that they do. Was It Good?Yes, it was great. We're talking about the 2016 annual lenten fish-chowder dinners, that are prepared and served by the Ontario Knights of Columbus with great assistance from the Boy Scouts Troop 311, Chaffey High Leo Service Club, and don't forget those Knights of Columbus ladies manning the dessert table. Now preparing and serving dinners for six weeks takes a lot of time and effort, but when there is work to do, the Knights of Columbus is right there to help. Some might think it's an easy job, but it takes many workers hours for these Lenten fish meals. Just to show what it takes, below is a list of workers who put in one day to the full Lenten schedule. Here is a list of workers. If we missed anyone, we're sorry.Kitchen: Xavier Lopez, Sr., Ray Hoch, Paul Hoch, George Cerisara, James Wood, Bob Stout, Stan Catillo, Sr., Gilbert Maravilla, Jim Jackson, Michael La Pre', Don Rybarczyk, Mark Ross.

Serving/Set Up/ Take-Down: Peter-John Mafnas, Tony Arnada, David Kotce, Reilly Flynn III, Lawerence Flynn, Xavier Lopez Jr., Richard Carniello, Rick Foss, Tom Graham, Dr. Stephen Wierzbinski, Richard Hess, Stan Castillo, Jr., David Morketter, Dennis Altenburg, Richard Williams. Dessert Table: Murray Johnson, Violet Castillo, Sandra Ross, Brendra Mafnas, Betty Cavanaugh, Amy Johnson, Josephine Gaglio.Miscellaneous/ Odd Jobs: Efrain Aguirre, Shuan Fesler, David Schaefer, Peter Perrone, Carlos Reyes, Henry Mirelez, Kevin Cavanaugh, Tony Aguilar.

We had a big turnout of customers on all but week five when "Mother Nature" decided to show who was boss. It cut the attendance in half, but those who came still

had a good dinner. We thank the Lady Knights for the "Treat Table" that's supplied by Knight Ladies (and one old man who manages to get a tray of brownies sold anywhere). A little background on what it takes for a successful run. On Thursday, several

Brothers David, Reilly Jr., Lawrence, Tony and Richard on the serving line during week five of the just completed 2016 Fish Fry.

Brothers show up to prepare the food, cook fish, make clam chowder, mac and cheese, etc. Without them, they could never be ready for 5:00 p.m. Friday. All in

all, we have a great group of workers and those wonderful customers. Many, many thanks to everyone. We look forwards to seeing you in "2017".

Our new Parochial Vicar at St. George, Fr. John Tran, works with Brother Stan Sr. on bread bowl preparation in the kitchen. Fr. John comes to St. George from St. Kevin Church in San Francisco and is a Brother Knight of a council in the San Francisco area.

The Helping Hands Award for this year's Fish Fry was Presented to the Leo Club of Chaffey High School. We had quite a few different kids helping from that club over the course of the six weeks.

One of three Fish Fry Awards this year, was presented to new member, Brother James Cook. James was present every Thursday night and every Friday morning helping with food preparation. He was back every Friday afternoon/evening helping with set-up and clean-up. Thanks for your great help and participation James and congratulations!

Another Fish Fry Award was presented to our Worthy Warden, Brother Tony Aranda. Tony has been helping us on the serving lines for probably the last five or six years now. Thanks Tony, we know it is a little taxing on that sore back and congratulations! A third Fish Fry Award will be presented to another of our hard working Brothers at the next business meeting. Join us then, see who it is and congratulate him in person!

Honoring PGK Allan CarterAt the March 11th Fish Fry, we hosted the family of our deceased brother and PGK, Allan Carter, for the purpose of presenting them with a Resolution of Condolence and with a check from the Peter Ticich Memorial Fund. Allan's widow, Jo Ann, along with daughter Danielle, son Michael, Jo Ann's sisters Joanie and Paula and Allan's brothers Jim and Joe, their wives and few other family members were able to join us for dinner and the presentations. Also on hand was the Faithful Navigator of the De Anza Fourth Degree Assembly, SK James

Dunkelman. Brother Jim presented a chalice from the assembly, inscribed with a tribute to and in memory of SK and Past Faithful Navigator Allan, to the family. Danielle then presented it to Fr. Dominick Mai of St. George, where it will be used in the celebration of the Eucharist during Masses. In fact, at the 11am Mass the following Sunday, Fr. John-Hue had the chalice at Mass and told those assembled all about it and Brother Allan. Thank you Fr. John! Thanks to Brother Shaun Fesler for being the liaison with the family for the last few

months and with Allan the last few months before his passing and for his enlightening talk about Brother Allan, at the beginning of the presentations. Thanks also to SK James Dunkelman for being on hand and presenting the chalice on behalf of all of

the members of the De Anza Assembly. Thanks also to new member, Deacon Chris Carroll for his assistance. Please continue to keep Allan and his family in your prayers, as well as the families of all of our departed brothers.

Intellectual Disabilities Drive The culmination of our council's efforts for the 2015/2016 Intellectual Disabilities Drive finished up with the presentation of the check to OPARC. On Tuesday, March 15th, Grand Knight Peter-John Mafnas, Treasurer Kevin Cavanaugh and Advocate Michael La Pre' presented a check from the Columbian Foundation Helping People With Intellectual Disabilities to OPARC CEO, Andrea Erickson.

The check for just under $2,300.00, was the end result of our brothers solicitation of donations at St. George and St. Anthony parishes as well as two Stater Brothers stores in Upland last fall. It was less than the previous year's check as we are no longer soliciting donations at St. Joseph. In addition to the check, Brother Michael brought with him, several photos of a check presentation to OPARC when he was Grand Knight back in 1990/1991 with his drive chairman, Brother Bob Leonard. Obviously, both Michael and Bob were, shall we say, a few years younger. He gave Ms. Erickson one of the photos for their use and archives. Hopefully, when we gear up later this year for the next drive, we will be able to make up some of the funds that we previously had from collecting at St. Joseph's. Regardless, thanks to all who came out and helped on the various weekends handing out Tootsie Rolls and collecting the donations to make the drive a success again this year. The great staff at OPARC and the clients they assist are most appreciative of our combined efforts.

I Can’t Risk ItA Man , his wife and his mother-in-law went on vacation to the holy Land. While they were there, the mother-in-law passed away. The undertaker told them, “You can have her shipped home for $5,000 or you can bury her here in the Holy land for $150.00.“The man thought about it and told him he would just have her shipped home. The undertaker asked, “Why would you spend $5000 to ship her to your mother-in-law’s home, when it would be wonderful to have her buried here and spend only $150.00?”The man replied “A man died here 2,000 years ago, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead. I just can’t take that chance.”

From Our Insurance Agent

My Dear Brother Knights,Do you have money in a CD or money market account at the bank or credit union? I think that’s great if you do. All of us should have some emergency (911) money in the bank or credit union for emergencies. However, in this low interest rate environment, keeping more than $10,000 or $20,000 in the bank or credit union for emergencies or savings purposes is neither necessary nor prudent. Right now the Knights of Columbus has a 12-month guaranteed interest rate of 2.50% in our flexible premium annuity program (1.50% guaranteed for life). This rate crushes most bank and credit union deposit account rates. Additionally, if you’d like to make more interest than that, the Knights of Columbus has several other competitive options. If you’d like or need more income or insurance protection (life, disability, long-term care, etc.), please let me know. I’d be happy to help you explore all of your options with the Knights of Columbus. If you have a child or children, or even grandchildren you wish to pass an inheritance along to, you definitely need life insurance. If you intend to pass on any property or wealth, you need life insurance. Life insurance is the most optimal product for transferring assets to loved ones and charities. There are several options that we can discuss when we meet. We have a “one and done” product called Single Premium Life, where you make one payment and never make another for the rest of your life. And, then there are several other options if you prefer to make regular payments. Remember, whether you want to make money, save money, or send money to your loved ones, the Knights of Columbus has options for you. Call or email me today to find out more. God be with you and your family.

Vivat Jesus!
