Acts 1-2; Matthew 6:33

I’m In: The Early Church

The church’s purpose is to share Jesus

Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes) : Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes) : Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together.

This is Week 1 of the I’m In campaign. We’ll talk about similar content as adults, but in a way that’s kid-friendly. The goal is not to encourage kids to engage in the campaign but to make it easy for families to discuss biblical truths together. Hopefully, parents will invite kids into the ways God is moving in their hearts since that will impact the whole family.

Ask kids if they remember the verse from today (Mattew 6:33)

Today we’re talking about the Church, and how it’s more than just a building. The church is a body of people, and our purpose is to share Jesus with others!

Goal: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear. ALL TOGETHER *Kids will initially be in a large group, but will form into small groups by the end of the activity.

• Hand out an animal card to each kid (and leader). Tell everyone to keep their card to themselves.

• Tell kids that they have to find other kids with the same animal card, and form into groups by making the noise of the animal on their card.

• Everyone will be making different animal noises at the same time, so kids need to listen carefully for any kids making the same noise as them.

• Once you see most kids forming into groups, tell them to sit down, and ask them this question:

o How did you find the rest of your group? o Could you have played this game by staying quiet?

• Make sure leaders are spread through out groups (if you don’t have enough leaders for each group, that’s okay) and then tell everyone to gather for Large Group, but stay in their animal groups.

Before you head into Large Group, remind them about your expectations for their behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) understand that the church’s purpose is to share Jesus and (2) identify one way to share Jesus as a part of the church Why: Kids need to understand that “church” can take place anywhere! At Crossroads, at school, at home…any place where they are joining others to live like Jesus. Tip: It may be tempting to tell kids they’ll be able to play after small group, but we want kids to be engaged in the lesson until they’re parents pick them up. That way, families will see what their kids are doing, and will be likely to engage together.

REVIEW THE STORY 1. What’s the church? (you and me; God’s family; not a building but followers of Jesus) 2. Who can be a part of the church/God’s family? (Everyone) 3. What does the church do? (share Jesus, live like Jesus) 4. How did the early church share Jesus? (praying, helping, sharing; asking the Holy

Spirit for power to heal, do miracles and teach) 5. How can we share Jesus? (same ways; kids may offer applicable ideas as well)

MAKE IT PERSONAL *Even though you’re in small groups, the leader whose group is closest to the computer will need to start and stop music for all groups.

• Give the heart (stress ball) to one kid in the group, and have everyone sit in a circle (on the floor or in chairs)

• Tell kids that they’re going to pass the heart around the circle, but every time the music stops, the kid who has the heart has to say the name of one person they could share Jesus with or show love to this week. Then they have to get up and share it with someone else in the group.

• Start the music and begin passing the heart, and play as long as you want! • If kids are old enough, you can do a more fast paced version of the game:

o Every time a kid gets the heart, they say the name of someone they can share Jesus with or show love to this week, then pass it to the next person.

o Every time the music stops, the kid with the heart gets up and shares it with another kid.

o In this version, kids say someone’s name each time they get the heart, and they have to do it as fast as they can!

Ask kids if

Extra time? Give kids a coloring page. After that, open a Bible and read Matthew 6:33 again, but this time do motions to go along with it:

• Seek the Kingdom of God (hold up a pointed finger) • above all else (reach hands up, then out) • and live righteously (cross your arms together, in a “t” formation) • and he will give you (hands in front of you, faced up) • everything you need (let kids make up their own motion for this)

Ask kids if

It may be hard for kids understand that the term “church” doesn’t just to refer to a building. Emphasize that “church” is another word for God’s family. It’s a group of people who are following Jesus and sharing him with others!

If you see kids zoning out while you’re talking, it’s okay to take a minute and redirect. For instance, you could have everyone do some stretches before you go onto the next section of the lesson, or make up a physical motion for them to do that goes along with the teaching.

*Click to play intro music WELCOME AND INTRO Hey everybody, welcome to Kids’ Club. I am so glad you’re here! That animal game was really fun; let’s see all the different kinds of animals you played. Raise your hand if you were a dog. (Let kids respond.) Raise your hand if you were a cat. (Let kids respond.) Raise your hand if you were a duck. (Let kids respond.) Raise your hand if you were a cow. (Let kids respond.) Raise your hand if you were a sheep. (Let kids respond.) So how did you find the other kids in the room who had the same animal? (Let one kid respond.) That’s right, you had to work together and make the same animal noise! If you didn’t make your animal noise, though, you would have never known which people to find. Let’s all do something fun; on the count of three, I want you to make your animal noise along with the rest of your group. It’s gonna get pretty loud! Ready? One, two…three! (Let kids make noise for a few seconds.) All right, good job everyone! Now let’s put our listening ears on, because we’re going to watch a video. It’s about a boy named Hiro, and he’s thinking about joining a team of people, but he’s not sure if he wants to do it, because he doesn’t know if they are like him…As you watch, try to figure out why he ends up joining their team! VIDEO: Big Hero Six / Meet the Team Wow, I wish I could be part of a team like that! Give me thumbs up if you would like to be part of their team. (Let kids respond.) Me too. At first, Hiro didn’t want anything to do with those guys. He thought they were silly. But then, he changed his mind! Can someone tell me why he changed his mind? (Let one kid answer.) That’s right, he saw all the cool things they did, and it made him to be a part of their team! He didn’t think they were silly anymore.

WE’RE PART OF A TEAM TOO Right now, you’re all sitting with your team, right? (Let kids respond ‘yes’.) Go ahead and give a high five to someone on your team! (Let kids give high fives for a few seconds.) Good job. There’s another team that we’re all a part of, and it’s really special. (Click to show picture of Crossroads.) Can you guess what team that is? (Let kids respond.) That’s right, we’re all a part of Crossroads! But guess what, Crossroads is part of even bigger team, called the Church! Now, when I say “Church” you might think of a building, right? Well the word “church” is actually a special word for God’s family all over the world. The church isn’t just a place you go to; it’s a group of people that you’re a part of! Everybody look at someone next to you. Now look at someone behind you. Now look at someone in front you. (Let kids respond after each of those prompts.) Good job! Everyone you just looked at can be a part of the God’s family, the Church. THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH So now that we know the Church isn’t just a place we go to, let’s talk about what the Church DOES. I’m going to give you three choices, and I want you to tell me if you think it’s something that the Church should do. Ready?

• (Click to show TV slide.) Should the church sit around and watch TV all day? (Let kids respond, “No!”)

• (Click to show snack slide.) Should the church just eat snacks all day? (Let kids respond, “No!”)

• (Click to show Jesus slide.) Should the church share Jesus with other people? (Let kids respond, “Yes!”)

Good job everybody! You’re right, the church, God’s family, can share Jesus with others. God sent Jesus to rescue us from all the wrong things in the world. Jesus died so that we could be rescued, and he did it because he loves us. THE EARLY CHURCH Now that Jesus has rescued us from all the wrong things in the world, we get to be a part of God’s family, and we get to follow Jesus. And when we share Jesus with others, they can follow Jesus too! To help us see how we can share Jesus with others, let’s watch a video about the early Church. As you watch, try to figure out the ways that people in the early church showed others what Jesus was like. VIDEO: Kid Bible Story / The Early Church What an amazing story! How did the early church show others what Jesus is like? (Let kids respond. They may say, “shared with each other, loved each other, prayed for each other; did miracles through the Holy Spirit, talked to God, helped, obeyed.) You’re right, they did all those things to show others how Jesus lived. They got to be part of a group who shares, takes care of each other, helps each other and has the power of the Holy Spirit! In the Bible, it says that when people saw how the Church acted, many more people were choosing to follow Jesus every day!

ACTING LIKE JESUS Something we can do help us remember how to act like Jesus is memorizing Bible verses! Here’s a verse that reminds us how to live like Jesus. I’m going to read part of it, and then you can repeat it after me. Ready? (The verse will be in regular paragraph form on the slide.) SLIDE: Matthew 6:33

• Seek the Kingdom of God (let kids repeat) • above all else (let kids repeat) • and live righteously (let kids repeat) • and he will give you (let kids repeat) • everything you need (let kids repeat)

Great job! Now let’s all read it together. (Lead kids in repeating the verse again, but this time do it all together.) Good job guys! Seeking the Kingdom of God means looking for ways to follow Jesus. When we’re doing that, we can’t help but show others how he loves them! RESPOND AND PRAY Sometimes it’s hard to live like Jesus. But luckily, God can help us share Jesus, we just have to ask him! Everybody go ahead and close your eyes. Now, silently in your head, ask God to give you a specific idea about how to share Jesus this week. Ask him to help you live like Jesus did. (Give kids a minute to be silent and respond. Then wrap up in prayer, or ask a kid to come up and pray for the group.) WORSHIP I think it’s time to show God how much we love him by singing as loud as we can while we worship! Remember, worship is when we only focus on God. Let’s sing about how we can be like Jesus! Music Video: Grow Up Like Jesus Music Video: Who I Am *Dismiss kids to small groups.
