Overview

Integral Systems SATCOM Solutions’ family of Solid State Power Amplifiers is a breakthrough in size and weight reduction. Ka band SSPA's from Integral cover the industry's broadest range of power levels and configurations, from 12 Watts up to 160 Watts Psat (9 to 100 Watts P1dB), in both component and outdoor configurations.

These high power Ka amplifiers are offered in either a component-type configuration or an outdoor type configuration. The component configuration is the smallest box for system integrators. It includes an internal DCDC power supply, accepting 18-55 Volts DC input. It requires external cooling through the bottom surface, which contains an integrated heat pipe array for optimal cooling. As with all Sophia's component units, this Ka component is environmentally sealed to water jet ingress standards, with elastomer O-rings or gaskets on all joints.

The outdoor configuration contains the exact same component unit, but mounted on top of a system of fan/fin structures for cooling. Order this configuration by specifying option FA with the order. It is fully self-contained and designed for all-weather environments. Cooling is supplied by IP55 rated weather-proof encapsulated fans and fins on heat-pipe heat distribution plates.

Fast Switching

These products are available with an optional Fast Switching feature. Under this feature, an extra SMA connector is provided on the front for a trigger input. This accepts a high-speed control input to mute or unmute the amplifier. In the muted state, the power and driver sections of the SSPA are powered down, and the power consumption of the amplifier goes to a small fraction of the normal power draw. Also, the noise at the output of the SSPA is near or below the thermal noise floor while in the muted state. Upon turn-on, the gain settles to its nominal value very quickly (significantly under one microsecond) and can be used immediately for transmit.

The turn-on and turn-off transient times are in the nanosecond range (see specifications), allowing a wide range of pulsed and power-saving modes of application for radar and TDMA communications. Power consumption is typically reduced directly in proportion to duty cycle, so for example a 20% duty cycle operation will consume 1/5th the power and generate 1/5th the heat and/or allow 5 times longer battery life as compared to an un-switched application.

Monitor & Control Functions

The monitor & control processor interfaces with a host computer over a serial communications link. All voltage, current, power, and temperature sensors are read through this interface. The transmit/mute control is opto-isolated for trouble-free system integration. The RS422 port communications run at 9600 baud, 8-bit word, no parity, and 1 stop bit.

The monitor & control also provides safety features such as over-temperature fault modes, automatically shutting down the SSPA and reporting these fault conditions over the serial link.

Mute control shuts off the power sections, and reduces RF output to thermal noise levels; power consumption during mute is reduced to approx. 20 Watts.

Simplifying Heat Management

The industry-leading efficiency greatly reduces power dissipation, thereby reducing heat generation. An integrated heatpipe baseplate provides even distribution of the heat load over the entire baseplate surface, eliminating hotspots and greatly simplifying the system thermal management for the component version. For the outdoor version, all cooling is provided; requires ambient air from -40C to +50C. Note that if used in a confined space, some form of ventilation or air-to-air heat exchange may be necessary to keep the ambient below 50C.
