Our Community Prayer for the Week

Our hearts break for the suffering, pain, rage, and hate that centuries of systemic racism has brought to this flash point.

We who love, respect one another, and worship together agree that something must be done.

We seek deeper wisdom and guidance as to how we can be part of the solution

God, please grant us wisdom.

God, please send comfort to all who are in pain today.

Translation: Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. “Observe” and “Remember,” in a single command, the One God announced to us. The Lord is One, and his name is One, for fame, for glory and for praise. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Come, let us go to meet the Sabbath, for it is a source of blessing. From the very beginning it was ordained; last in creation, first in God’s plan. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Shrine of the King, royal city, arise! Come forth from thy ruins. Long enough have you dwelt in the vale of tears! He will show you abundant mercy. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Shake off your dust, arise! Put on your glorious garments, my people, and pray: “ Be near to my soul, and redeem it through the son of Jesse, the Bethlehemite.” Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Bestir yourself, bestir yourself, for your light has come; arise and shine! Awake, awake, utter a song; the Lord’s glory is revealed upon you. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Be not ashamed nor confounded. Why are you downcast? Why do you moan? The afflicted of my people will be sheltered within you; the city shall be rebuilt on its ancient site. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Those who despoiled you shall become a spoil, and all who would devour you shall be far away. Your God will rejoice over you as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. You shall extend to the right and to the left, and you shall revere the Lord. Through the advent of a descendant of Perez we shall rejoice and exult. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Come in peace, crown of God, come with joy and cheerfulness; amidst the faithful of the chosen people come O bride; come, O bride. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath.

Ahavat Olam – Some thoughts on Unending Love from Reconstructing Judaism

We find ourselves in a moment of deep collective rage. Some expressions of anger may feel constructive

towards building the world of justice and liberation we seek, and some may seem destructive to that goal.

Let us aspire to turn first to empathy when engaging that which we may not understand. We offer these

closing words from Rabbi Lauren Grabelle Herrmannas a blessing to help each of us find the empathy we

need to navigate this moment of anger:

“I am angry. I am angry because I love. I love human beings. I love this gift of love. I want humans to

thrive. And if we look into our hearts, we want every human being to thrive to their potential. And that is

love.

Let ourselves feel the anger because it is a reflection of that love, that hope, that possibility.

Anger and love are not opposites. The God of anger and the God of love are not opposites.

In this moment of pain, of injustice, of uncovering layers of justice, I want to invite us to call on the God of

love and the God of anger, the same God, to support us in our work. And I want us to dig deep into our

hearts to make space for love and anger and to know that one is a reflection of the other. Let our anger

and our love lift us up into a better tomorrow and let’s continue to fight.”

SHEMA Sh’ma Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad! Hear, O Israel, Adonai is our God, Adonai is One!

Baruch shem k’vod malchuto l’olam va-ed. Blessed is God’s glorious majesty forever and ever!

A Prayer for Our Country by Rabbi Jay Sherwood

Our God and God of our Ancestors, bless our nation and its inhabitants. Protect its citizens from all threats, both domestic and foreign. Bring blessing, health, and prosperity from sea to shining sea. Guide our people to walk in Your ways, as You prophesied to Jeremiah, to “act with kindness, justice and righteousness throughout the land.” O God, be our beacon of kindness. You teach us through the wisdom of King David that, “the world is built on kindness.” May racism, anti-Semitism, misogyny, homophobia, and all other forms of hatred be uprooted from our land; and may You fill our hearts with empathy and love. May our nation welcome the stranger and the immigrant, give aid to the poor and the hungry, and care for the underprivileged and the disenfranchised. We ask that You draw us and the leaders of our nation nearer to Your kindness. O God, be our beacon of justice. You implore us with the commandment in your holy Torah, “Justice, justice, you will pursue!” Let there be justice for every person who dwells inside our borders, no matter the color of their skin, the gender of their love, the place of their birth or the balance in their bank account. May the judges of our land consider equity and compassion in every decision. We ask that You draw us and the leaders of our nation nearer to Your justice. O God, be our beacon of righteousness. You explain to us with the poetry of Your Proverbs that, “the righteous person is the foundation of the world.” Send Your good counsel to our elected and appointed officials, so that they might steer our country in a direction that celebrates our common humanity. Impress upon those who have been placed in positions of responsibility that they have the moral obligation to protect the safety and welfare of everyone they serve. We ask that You draw us and the leaders of our nation nearer to Your righteousness.

As we strive to act with kindness, justice and righteousness, so may our country, its inhabitants, and its government, strive to be a light unto the nations. Amen.

Together: Aleinu. It is on us. To bow in praise before God as a sign of reverence and perhaps submission. It is on us to bend our knees only in reverence for life and only for submission to that which is good. Together: Aleinu. It is on us. Our sages teach that the angels have no knees Their legs to no bend They do not need knees Because their entire purpose is to stand tall before God in service. But we are not these kinds of angels We bend under the weight on our shoulders, We let this twisted world twist us, Into knowing that our service to God comes, Not only in the form of thoughts and prayers, But in the form of action. Together: Aleinu. It is on us. Va’achachu kor’im. We bend at the knee Umistachavim. We bow at the waist. Lifnei Melech Malchei HaMalchim. We stand straight before God. HaKadosh Baruch Hu. We who are made in God’s image must be holy Because God is holy. So we rise To repair this very broken world We stand straight because we can We stand up because we must

Together: Aleinu. It is on us. We bend our knees before the God of love In devotion and disruption In protest and in praise From shame to shleimut – wholeness We rise before the God of truth to march and to move to bend this broken arc towards justice Together: Aleinu. It is on us. Bent knees are for showing reverence To prostrate in peaceful protest To prepare us for moving To prepare us for marching Bent knees are not for killing God did not knees, or any other part of us, for that Together: Aleinu.
