DESIGN REVIEW CONTINUES TO GROW AND EVOLVE 2010-2011

•54 design reviews and design workshops delivered over last year

•26 of these were paid for design reviews/workshops and 28 were HCA and CABE funded reviews

•£62,950 from paid design review meetings and workshops last year

•24 local authorities in the South East used design review over the last year, meetings were delivered in all 7 counties

•Kent Architecture Centre launched the Ashford Design Panel in 2010 they have already delivered 8 reviews

NEW MARLOWE THEATRE

•The South East Regional Design Panel reviewed the New Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury in September 2007

•The Panel gave an excellent review of the scheme by Keith Williams Architects and suggested some areas of the project that needed to be explored further

•Canterbury City Council granted planning permission for the project in August 2008 and the building is currently under construction

SPACESHAPER AND SPACESHAPER MANAGEMENT 9-14 2010-2011

•Over 140 Spaceshaper workshops have run to date

•Over 20 Spaceshaper workshops and 22 Spaceshaper 9-14 workshops have been delivered in the past year

•Spaceshaper has been adopted by leading national and regional organizations - British Waterways, Forestry Commission, Sustrans, Riverside, Groundwork and the Architecture Centre Network

•There are now 135 active Spaceshaper facilitators and 184 active Spaceshaper 9-14 facilitators

•18 Australian Spaceshaper and Spaceshaper 9-14 facilitators trained

•Kent Architecture Centre has run 3 Spaceshaper workshops and 2 Spaceshaper 9-14 workshops over the last year

•7 Regional advocacy events have taken place over the last year in the West Midlands, East Midlands, North West, North East, London/South East, South West and Yorkshire

•4 Spaceshaper Taster sessions have been delivered in the last year

•3 Spaceshaper Facilitator Training sessions delivered over the past year

•2 Spaceshaper 9-14 Facilitator Training sessions delivered over the past year

•2 Top-up Training sessions for facilitators over the last year

•Over 30 young people co-facilitators trained by Kent Architecture Centre, Beam and The Architecture Centre, Bristol

AFRICAN CARIBBEAN FORUM SPACESHAPER 9-14

•An exciting, Training workshop with young people from the African Caribbean Forum in Gravesham

•Part of a second phase of Spaceshaper 9-14, where young people across the UK are trained to help Spaceshaper Facilitators in live workshops

•A growing area of work through which Kent Architecture Centre is encouraging youth mentoring and citizenship

•Those who took part in the workshop said that it was a really great experience

SPACESHAPER WINS ACCOLADES IN COPENHAGEN

•In January we ran an introductory session and practical Spaceshaper workshop for over 40 people from Denmark, Finland and Sweden. Spaceshaper was enthusiastically received

•Participants spoke about the value of Spaceshaper in collecting evidence to support funding bids and presentations to decision-makers.

•We are now starting development of a Nordic version of Spaceshaper

PULBOROUGH SPACESHAPER - LOCAL PEOPLE AND PUBLIC SPACE

•In July Kent Architecture Centre facilitated a day of Spaceshaper events looking at the centre of Pulborough in West Sussex

•Pupils from the local primary school took part in a Spaceshaper 9-14 workshop

•The afternoon Spaceshaper workshop included a walkabout and provoked some lively debate and a wide range of ideas and suggestions

•This a great example of where Spaceshaper has brought together the community, locals and traders

SPACESHAPER AT CLIFFE POOLS

•In August we ran a Spaceshaper workshop for the RSPB at Cliffe Pools Reserve in Medway

•16 people attended and took part in site visits

•Recurring themes emerged from the workshop questionnaire - generating ideas to improve the area without encroaching too much on the natural environment

•New signs (including Braille), extra wardens and a 'meet and greet' service are being put in place

BUILT ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION

•A question card toolkit based on the framework of the Design Quality Indicators

•A toolkit to be used by students, teachers and governors to understand the range of design issues involved in improving, refurbishing or renewing a school's buildings and grounds

•We delivered an interactive workshop for delegates at the Education Building Design Officers' Group's conference in November 2010

•We developed supplementary toolkit, looking specifically at sustainable design issues

GREEN DAY - FUN TIMES, SERIOUS LESSONS

•Fun times, Serious lessons - Working with CABE to promote Green Day

•Green Day is a fantastic way to make schools more sustainable - inspiring teachers and pupils to learn more about climate change and how it relates to the buildings and spaces around them

•We invited teachers from more than 800 schools in Kent and Sussex to free workshops

•The workshops are part of a national series which culminate in Green Day events run by schools after World Environment Day

THE MEADS - A NEW COMMUNITY CENTRE FOR SITTINGBOURNE

•Kent Architecture Centre facilitated the appointment of East Architects to design a new community facility for the Meads neighbourhood, Sittingbourne

•Working with local people in a series of interactive workshops we created a development brief for a new community centre

•Through an invited architecture competition East Architects were selected, producing an unique and striking building that responds to the needs of the growing community

PULBOROUGH VISION AND ACTION PLAN

•Working with Pulborough Community Partnership to produce Vision and Action Plan for Lower Street Regeneration Area

•Initial design study as starting point for public consultation - identifying and communicating potential design approaches

•Providing ongoing support and advice on the final delivery plan

BUILDING FOR LIFE AND MANUAL FOR STREETS WORKSHOPS

•Manual for Streets and Building for Life training sessions took place in February in Ashford and Crawley

•The events attracted capacity audiences, with over 80 people attending over the two days

•Feedback from participants indicated that it was the hands-on nature of the workshops that people particularly valued

•Both events were supported by the CABE Regional Funding Programme

Reigate and Banstead

•A toolkit to help planning officers in assessing and improving the design of residential and mixed use schemes

•Including a local distinctiveness Design Guide, with photo library

•Raising the Quality of Design - workshops for Councillors and Development Control Officers

•Enhancing design standards and improving the quality of the environment without increasing costs

BRIGHTON + HOVE DESIGN TRAINING

•We have been commissioned to deliver three design and built environment training workshops for Brighton + Hove Council officers

•The first workshop - The Building Blocks - was held in March, with two more workshops to be delivered this year, on Character and on Design Assessment

SWAN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

•We have been commissioned to run seven training sessions, from beginner to advanced level - providing opportunities for officers to acquire new skills and refresh or develop old ones

•Following an introductory workshop in March, we will be looking at what is design, why it matters, how we achieve good design and know if we have got it right, with hands on advice on live projects

NO 1 SMITHERY: NATIONAL MUSEUMS MARITIME TREASURES

•Chatham Historic Dockyard's latest launch, No 1 Smithery, the conversion of a key building to provide galleries and storage for the unique collection of maritime models, art and other objects, has attracted widespread acclaim for the building, designed by a team led by Architects Van Heyningen & Haward

•In 2003 Kent Architecture Centre played an important role in the very early stages of the project, preparing a Feasibility Study and supporting Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust in the process of developing the brief and commissioning a high calibre design team

•We recently visited the Bishop Challoner Learning Village in East London, as a follow up to the feasibility study we undertook eight years ago

•The concept of the 'Learning Village' was coined by Kent Architecture Centre to describe the provision of educational, cultural and recreational resources for the local community

•We used our skills in strategic spatial analysis and creative thinking to develop a clear brief and combined this with an inclusive approach to stakeholders
