Kagan Structures
Kagan includes 36 cooperative learning structures designed to
enhance student learning. In the following slides, you will see 3
structures demonstrated within our classrooms.
Rally Coach
In Rally Coach, students are paired and take turns practicing a skill while the other is a coach and then they
reverse the roles.
Talking Chips
Students are given tokens and the teacher provides students with the discussion topic. Students then place a
token in order to contribute to the conversation.
Match Mine *modified for math class
During Match Mine, students are given note cards with math facts and they circulate around the room
until they locate another student who has an equivalent math fact
Our personal feelings:
Dana: Kagan grouping has helped with classroom management. I believe it has
to be personalized to meet each classroom’s need.
Lindsey: In my classroom, Kagan grouping has been beneficial in helping
students to work cooperatively and effectively in situations normally
unfamiliar to them. Ann: Kagan creates a level playing field
for all students, no matter their academic abilities.
